Here are the ten most beautiful black women in the world that I know of who are also famous enough to be in the Wikipedia. This is a work in progress. I am open to suggestions.
1. Vilayna Lasalle is an American swimsuit model and video vixen. Her face is perfect. She is part Brazilian and Creole. More.
2. Jill Marie Jones (1975- ) is an American actress. She starred in the television show “Girlfriends” and was once a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys. What lips! She is not beautiful in an ordinary way, but somehow I cannot take my eyes off her. More.
3. Sanaa Lathan (1971- ) is an American actress. She is probably best known as the heroine in “Alien vs. Predator” (2004). I saw her in “Disappearing Acts” (2000) and could not take my eyes off her. Looking at her is like eating ice cream on a hot summer day. More.
4. Heather Headley (1974- ) is a Broadway actress and singer from Trinidad. She starred in “Aida” and “The Lion King” on Broadway. More.
5. Gabrielle Union (1972- ) is an American film actress. Of all the women here she is easily the one I have mentioned most in this blog. More.
9. Gloria Reuben (1964- ) is a Canadian actress who is best known for appearing on the television show “ER”, where she got Aids from her unfaithful husband. Her father is white, her mother Jamaican. She won Miss Black Ontario 1986. More.
10. Sade(1959- ) is a Nigerian-born singer from the 1980s. She has that otherworldly look, like a princess from a storybook. She is half white, but I am too much of an American to see her as white instead of black. The One Drop Rule, you know. More.
Honourable mentions (not in any order): Tamara Tunie, Gina Torres, Karyn White, Sharon Leal, Neferteri Shepherd, Alicia Keys, Brandy Norwood, Angela Bassett, YaYa Da Costa, Charmaine Sinclair, Ananda Lewis, Bria Myles, Kenya Moore, Jordin Sparks, Beverly Peele, Kerry Washington, Marsha Thomason, Estelle, Toni Braxton, Solange Knowles, Denise Nicholas, Lisa Bonet,Ā Elise Neal, Adriana Bombom, Ildi Silva, Lizz Robbins, Angell Conwell, Toccara Jones, Reagan Gomez-Preston, Annie Ruddock, Nia Long and Latavia Roberson.
How I rank the general beauty of black women from different places:
- Cameroon
- Congo (either one)
- France
- West Africa (Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal)
- Britain
- West Indies (Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana)
- America
- Brazil
- Colombia
I do not know enough about black women in other places, like Somalia or South Africa, to say.

Why are all the “Beautiful Black Women”, light skinned sistas? Don’t get me wrong each and every one of the ladies in this anthology is a clear testament to the divine breath of the creator. However, there surely are other sun kissed, honey brown, sweet as fresh baked brownies (the kind your grandmother makes), dark and lovely ladies that could receive their well deserved and proper acknowledgment, with the same spirit in which this breathtaking compilation of all that is divine was assembled.

I have nothing against dark-skinned women. My wife is darker than most of these women. But I am not going to add women just for the sake of some sort of politically correct balance. It is what it is.
I made a list like this of all women, not just black women. Half the women there are black. If I were to be politically correct, then only one or two of them could have been black. I would have hated that.

I made this list and I agree: it is sad that there are no African women. From what little I have seen of them, they are generally better looking (to me) than women in Brazil, North America or even the West Indies.
The trouble is, most who are famous enough for a North American like me to know mainly come through the world of fashion – Iman, Oluchi, Alek and so on. Which means they have to be stick-thin and therefore unappealing (to me).
Next week I plan to do some digging on the Internet and come up with a list like this for Nigeria. Please send your suggestions! In time I want to do Cameroon too. Maybe that will help to bring some African women onto this list.
In the meantime, if you can think of any African women who are not thin as a rail or just plain beautiful anyway, please do tell me! I am all ears.

The term black, just like any other term, can be defined in many different ways. That being said, I have some questions for Harry:
1)The definition of black that I subscribe to is historical (i.e. anyone alive today that would have been considered black in the 1950’s in Mississippi, in my opinion, is black in this era as well). What definition of black do you subscribe to?
2)If I move into a neighborhood that, unbeknownst to me, is saturated with white supremacist, they would burn a cross in my front lawn. If you made the same mistake, would they only burn half of a cross in your front lawn?

You have a great list here, but I’d like to make a bit of a correction. Gloria Reuben’s father, you report, is “white,” which suggests he is of European descent. However, you referred to Ms. Reuben’s mother as “Jamaican,” which is not a racial identity. It is a national one. Many people who are from the U.S. assume all Jamaicans are “black” or of African descent. This isn’t true. There are “black,” “white,” “Asian,” and “Southeast Asian” Jamaicans. So, I assume that what you mean is that Ms. Reuben’s mother is a Jamaican “black” or a Jamaican of African descent.

Yes, there are a lot of brothers that for all sorts of reasons have turned away from our Black queens, but clearly their minds have been manipulated by different factors. I’ve heard all kinds of excuses. I love Black women. They are the most beautiful women to grace the earth. They stand by us better than any other race of females have stood by their mail counterparts, and I for one could never consider marrying a white woman or spending my hard earned money on one. I’m not prejudice, but with so many available sisters out there, why would there ever be a need to stray?

Black women are beautiful and I would probably never marry a white woman either, but in my experience black women are hard to live with, so I can see why some black men go to white women.

Wow Agabond, I have to agree with you on the two lists thing.
I think it’s because it is more about stardom and celeb than actual beauty.
I mean, I’ve seen in my opinion many far more attractive black women randomly walking down a street than most of the women in the top 100 things.
I hate to sound shallow. I’m not.
This goes for other races as well.
Not quite sure why there aren’t as many dark skin chicks in the media.
I agree that the problem b/n black males and females seems more social.
A weird supporting stat is that even though black men are said to hop from woman 2 woman and date a lot of white women, over 92% continue to marry black.

I already expressed the mistruths about the “one drop rule” on another blog posting. Naomi Campbell is actually mixed herself down the line (her father is said to have sizable amounts of Chinese ancestry), where did you come to the conclusion that she was simply “black” and Beyonce (who has two African American parents) is only “black” by the overstated “one drop rule”?
Anyway, nice list. And as far as color goes, I think the list has a nice balance. Don’t know what the other posters were talking about …can’t make everyone happy I guess.

I still have to disagree with you about the One Drop Rule. Naomi is mostly black and would be seen as black anywhere in the world. What sets America apart from most of the world is that you are either black or white – there is no “mixed” in between. So the black “race” has people who are 85% white or more.

How do you know that Naomi is mostly black? And Beyonce isn’t? It seems like you’re making an assumption based on your perception of skin tone and appearance. Have you watched African American Lives 2 on PBS?
Tom Joyner, the radio host, is a fair skinned black man with gray eyes. His genetics results: 66% African. Mostly black, still. On the other hand you had Linda Johnson Rice, a brown skinned sister …40% European …more European than Tom Joyner.
Then, there’s the case with the Afro-Brazilian gymnast and the Afro-Brazilian musician on the Brazilian counterpart of the show …both of these folks looked like they could’ve been pure African.
They actually were mostly European.
So, please don’t make assumptions on a persons’ ancestry by appearances alone. It’s very biased and very false.
LOOKS ARE DECEIVING. Nothing is rarely like it seems or looks.
Also, the one drop rule is the reason why WE’RE all seen as black. Not a mixture.
LikeLike
I read about that study the BBC did on Afro-Brazilians. Skin colour is not a sure guide, as they showed.
You can be more than one-fourth black and still pass for white, but in most cases 10% is enough to make you “look black” in America.

The black British women I know of: Naomi Campbell, Sade, Jourdan Dunn, Downtown Julie Brown (American MTV), Thandie Newton, Sophie Okonedo, Zadie Smith, Leona Lewis, Joan Armatrading, Shirley Bassey (sang the Goldfinger song), Mel of the Spice Girls, Des’ree (“You Gotta Be”), Skye Edwards of Morcheeba, Maxine Nightingale, Mica Paris, Princess (singer from the 1980s), Annie Ruddock of Amazulu, Corrine Bailey-Rae and Estelle (singer, just came to the States).
Mainly singers, as you can see.
I did not know Des’ree was British till I saw her in an interview and heard her accent. That is pretty common for singers. I thought Joan Armatrading and Maxine Nightingale were American too. I did not know that Shirley Bassey was black or British or Welsh until I looked her up in the Wikipedia for some reason.

I’m sorry. To the people complaining about women on the list who are not black. I have a news flash for you. Black = African ancestry. Therefore it is perfectly acceptable to call classify a woman like Sade as black, specifically if she self identities as such. You could call her white as well, since she is half white, but its fine to say black as well. Also consider that every black in the diaspora has european ancestry or asian or amerindian anscestry somewhere down the line. That doesn’t make them any less black. Black is not an insult or something to be ashamed of, and as a proud black woman I take extreme offense at any suggestion that there is something the matter with it.

I agree w/ Lala, I feel that Rihanna is just merely attractive BUT her features are not “European” at all. They are actually pretty stereotypically West African. And believe it or not, there are actually full-blooded Africans with light eyes!
What exactly are “European” features, if you will? And what are “African” features? Are there only one set? So, would you say that East Africans from the Horn (Somalis, Ethiopians, Eritreans) have “European” features and broad-nosed, thick-lipped Germans have “black” features?
And …(gasp), there’s actually full-blooded Native Africans that have a light-brown skin tone similar to Rihanna’s!!! And ..(gasp), there’s actually some, who…get this…are actually LIGHTER THAN HER! Can you believe it?!
Learn about African diversity before you criticize or compare.

I’m sorry, but any list of beautiful Black women that doesn’t include Halle Berry – even in the honorable mention – is just plain silly.
Same for Shari Belafonte.

HT,
I think that’s part of Abagond’s purpose with these lists. He wants to acknowledge the beautiful black women with their natural variety of looks because he (and many others) are sick of the Halle Berrys being the so-called “beacon of black beauty”.

HT: mynameismyname said it better than I could. The mainstream media seem to push Beyonce and Halle as some kind of black beauty when all they like in them is a white beauty. It does sicken me. They are both beautiful, but they are hardly the most beautiful black women out there.
I put Solange Knowles on the list of Honourable Mentions and not Beyonce in part because Solange has kept her black hair and I love black hair.

Dash and Berry are good-looking, but they are not the most beautiful.
Halle Berry, in particular, for some reason gets hyped far beyond either her beauty or her achievements as an actress. Angela Bassett is far better than her on both counts, but where is the hype for her? Kimberly Elise is a far better actress than Halle and Gabrielle Union is far more beautiful, but no paparazzi are stalking them. Why is that?

Aba,
Why do people compare Berry and Bassett? They’re two different people.
Bassett is an ctor’s actor who graduated from Yale. She’s a bit older than Berry, much more mature and elegant. Understated woman, very picky in her chosen roles (she turned down the role in “Monster’s Ball” that Berry eventually won an Oscar for) and is very private about her personal life.
Berry, on the other hand, is much more malleable. She’s younger than Bassett and can play the “sex kitten” position much more throughly. Her life story is far less stable than Bassett’s, as is her quality of work.
She’s “pop media” material while Bassett is much more, I don’t know, “high brow”? Comparing Berry and Bassett is like comparing Eric Jerome Dickey to James Baldwin, in my opinion.
Berry’s career is a clear demonstration of how racist both Hollywood and the pop media is. The mainstream media ignored her almost a decade after the release of her first film, post-Oscar she still struggles to find quality work and relative to the white female Hollywood “A-List”, she’s way behind in terms of success and media attention. She just gets lots of pop media attention relative to any other black actress, outside of the Latifah/Whoopi nexus, of course.

I compared Bassett to Berry because she is clearly better, in both talent and beauty, and yet does not get even half the attention that Berry gets.

I agree, Aba. That’s clear who the more beautiful and talented actress is, but still, comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges.
My post above explains why one gets more pop-media attention than the other. One is more willing to play the “game” while the other is more dignified. Yet, outside of the magazines/TV screen, they both fight the same fight.

the women on this board are beautiful and i agree with mynameismyname, beyonce and halle berry are pretty but not the most beautiful women in the world in my opinion and that’s hollywood keep pushing that because of their skin tone. i mean i think kelly rowland is prettier than beyonce any day. hollywood is racist when it comes to black women because they’ll show the light skin girl while the dark skin girl doesn’t get recognized and that’s a shame to me. rihanna is way prettier than beyonce too and to me she’s not thin. she does have meat on her bones. angela bassett is a better actress but doesn’t get the recognition like halle does. i think there should have been more black women that is dark skin on the list but hey that’s what i think because we are beautiful too but we’re not recognized for that. i just wish that we could see more shades of color in hollywood than the same thing.

Dark-skinned women are beautiful! The world would be a poorer place without them.
Part of the reason the women on this list are as light as they are is because it is limited to black women who are famous enough to have an article in the Wikipedia. Hollywood, which favours light-skinned women, has the power to make you known to millions and therefore get you into the Wikipedia.
Some say I prefer light-skinned women. I do not see that, but I am bound to be affected by white ideas of beauty like everyone else – whether I like it or not.
LikeLike
I agree, Aba.
Thanks to the shameful legacy of colorism, it seems like it’s almost taboo to recognize the beauty of a black woman who’s considered “light skinned”. I don’t think people should reverse the colorist wrongs that have been committed in the past (and many argue, in the present, as well) and shun “light” women. It’s just that many people need to be careful not to elevate these women as the “standard”. ‘Cause they’re not. There should be no standard of beauty that one has to live up to. That’s not very realistic and unfair.
Now, Aba, when you say H-Town favors “light skinned women”, you mean white women, right? Of course, anyone can see that. But I disagree with that ‘preference’ with the black women. Look at the list of all the black women who’ve had, some, at the very least, some half-way success in the US film/TV industry, from lets say from the ’70s to now ….”light skinned” women are not predominate, neither were they more successful. Hell, if I can gather names of the black actresses who are most visible in Hollywood, the majority ain’t light.
The “light skinned black girl” angle seems to come more from the mainstream media, IMO. The magazines that are targeted to lilly white readerships. By putting ambigious looking non-white women, they can say they’re diverse without deviating from the narrow, white template of beauty that they sell.
LikeLike
Also Aba,
I’m surprised people have cricitized you for the list above. The women you selected are pretty diverse in looks. It’s interesting: anytime a discussion occurs (online, at least)about black female beauty or black women in the industry, the conversation always veers into skin color politics. Even if there’s a variety of shades being presented (like on the list above).

i was giving my opinion of what i saw on this blog. yes the women on this list are beautiful but when you see list like this it seems it always have light skinned women. i’m not hating on nobody but why can’t nobody see that dark skinned women as beautiful other than “oh she’s cute for a dark skinned girl”. i know you have your preferences and i understand that but no one should have to diss someone because that’s not your type and i think it’s wrong. as for rihanna, she’s not even that thin if you really look at her.
LikeLike
Aba,
I think skin shade, hair and body type tend to be the sensitive areas for a lot of people when it comes to discussions of black female beauty because our racist country has declared white skin, thin stringy hair and bone-thin to be the near-requirements to be beautiful. The vast majority of black women lack all three of these attributes. Hell, most white American women miss the bone-thin one.
Lil’vina,
You seem fairly young. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But because we live in a country that says that one’s race shapes how attractive and successful they are, racial hangups can transpire in discussions of beauty.
Any black person who tells a black woman that she’s “pretty for a dark skinned girl” is basically saying that “you’re pretty for a black girl”. They’ve brought in the false, noxious yet ubiqitious idea that black women are less attractive than their white counterparts. This mentality also drives (one of) the reasons why the whiter looking girls seem so desirable to them in the first place.
Aba’s list is fairly diverse. As is TVOne’s (a black cable network) similar list, which I listed under the comments section of another blog posting on this site.

yes i am young but why can’t people appreciate dark skin women? not all of them are ugly and i wrote my opinion just like everybody else did. and what me being young have to do with anything? hollywood shows the same thing when it comes to beauty. beyonce and halle for example. they’re both pretty women but they’re not the most beautiful women out there, especially black women. they think they’re the ideal black beauty and you’re right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but beauty comes in all shades, sizes, race, whatever you can think of. i just people can beauty in every shade instead of being just the same thing when you look on the t.v. and magazines.

Yes, black women are beautiful. We, as black men, must love and protect them. Today, our women feel unloved. That is why, I feel, there is such a big rift between black men and women in the development of black families. The father/daughter relationship is crucial. When black daughters are not cared for and nurtured by their fathers, they are being trained to distrust, dislike and discard black men as adults. A new film project, http://www.wherewasdaddy.com, discusses this all-important relationship.

Ray #133. fathers have a role to play, but certainly no more than a mother. If a daughter grows up with a father that is worthless, then the mother has a major role to play as do the other male members of that family. It’s a strange thing to suggest that because a black father is a waste of space that his relationship with that child would be more likely to make the child chose to look outside of her race for a partner. would you ever suggest such a thing to a white person?
My belief is that if the mother has had a bad experience with that man, she needs to educate her daughter into understanding her own self worth, and what she should expect of a black man. not accept of a black man.
And if that mother has a son, the same should be stated to him also. problem i see at the moment is that a lot of black men (?) seem to think that because they can have children all over the place they should be rewarded with a pat on the back, hand them an oscar. but don’t ask them to provide!!

Hi everyone i have thouroughly enjoyed reading your opinons on this topic. hello abagond thanks for starting it.
First ? what is beauty? like some have said it is in the eyes of the beholder. All women take a small offence if a man may not find her attractive they start to question their physical atributes. Some men prefer oriental women some like indian women, it hurts most when a man from their own race finds another race more attractive.
It hurts black women most because we were always told we were an ugly race broad nose big lips big bottom.
HELLO Peeps what are alot of white women doing today. bum chek inplants tanning putting collegene in lips etc. canerows braids. All black attributes.
We are as a race quite insecure about our beauty as a whole. Yes I know that Peeps would say im not.
If beauty turned on its head white having more black looks and blacks having more white and the media, hollywood said this is the new beauty, this will still be an issue with black women.
As for peeps slaming lighter skinned women, are no better than those who think black is not beautiful. It translates as the lighter you are the less black you are. NEWS BULLENTINE: WE COME IN DIFFERENT SHADES OF BLACK FROM YELLOW TO RED TO NAVY BLUE TONES & ALL THE INBETWEENS.
Dorthy Dandridge & Lena horne both faced racial ignorance during their era and look how white skinned they are. Berry herself is still fighting it. Light skinned medium or dark the world will always see us as nothing but black.
And for the person who said that they prefer solange one reason is because her hair is real oh please. Wearing wigs or weaves dose not mean you are or want to be white. Many black women have afro wigs what are they then? My hair at the moment is natural but because i love changing the way i look i also have wigs and weaves as well as wearing my own hair out.
doesnt make me white or want to be.
I know u dont need me to defend u abagond but i will anyway.
bagond has listed women that we all might know or can look up. If i was to do the same list about white black or asian men i can only go by example. He can not put down who he does not know.
No one country island or state has better looking women than another.

Where are Nia Long and Mellissa DeSosa. BTW, Meagan Goode IS Beautiful!
And people are going to kill me for saying this, but nobody has EVER seen Whoopi Goldberg glammed up. I saw her legs one time, and they’re beautiful. If she’s make herself up, Black men would look at her differently, I guarantee it. I can see the beauty in her face. Her voice is a turnoff, tho. Hell…they are ALL beautiful. Throitup 4 tha sistas!
On the flip, I am reading some really ignorant statements. #1, I see some chocolate on the list. G.U. is brown-skinned and Naomi is chocolate.
As for the people who say, “I’ve seen prettier women on the street”, these celebs were once on the street, too. They come from “regular” lives and families.
So, of course, they do not look any better or worse than anyone else. Celebs are just ordinary people with money and fame…that’s it. They pee, they fart, they get bad breath, they get B.O., they booboo, they lose shyt, they get high, they get drunk, they throw up. They’re just humans…not gods.
Most were not born rich or famous, and many grew up dirt poor. Most went to public schools. Most have been dumped by guys, many were beaten up or beat other girls up. Most are both liked and disliked by many. Some are liars, thieves or jezebells. They are human. And I love them all despite their flaws.
One last note, I love the people who intelligently bring up the fact that skin color and/or features do not tell someone’s ethnicity or genetic makeup. I am a milk-chocolate brotha who happens to wear a bald head.
When I tell people I have Indian Blood and Chinese in my background, some people look at me with skepticism, despite my extraordinarily skinny, pointed nose, slanty eyes, dark, thick eyebrows, and straight body hair. They look at me as if to say, “Oh, no…another one of these brothas with a light-skin complex…ashamed to be Black, trying to claim he’s ‘mixed'”, when I am telling the flat-out truth.
But, with my features, it shouldn’t even be that hard to tell, so I shoulod get the benefit of the doubt.
There’s no way to tell if someone is of mixed heritage or not, and we are mostly mixed. Whites keep us down by calling us Black. So, the next time someone white calls you Black, tell them you’re not, and be serious about it. Say it more than once and say it firmly. Watch the look on their faces…and then laugh.
I say all of this just to put it down for all of the dark Blindians and Blasians out there. And, another thing…Black women, quit calling light-skinned men “pretty boys”…they are no more or less “pretty” (i.e., beautiful)than any other Black men.
What if we called light-skinned women “the pretty girls”?..oh, I forgot…we sort of DO. We have to stop that.

Ivan,
When you say “even like a super dark woman can be attractive”, it seems as if you’re implying that being “super dark” usually deters from your looks? Where does this attitude come from, with many people of color? I always thought extreme paleness could take away from someone’s beauty. Not extreme darkness. Why else is the tanning industry a billion dollar one?
Alek Wek isn’t for everyone, but I do think she is beautiful. People like her because, by Western standards, she’s “exotic”. Yet, she’s a typical Dinka in terms of looks. This ties in with a recent post by Aba.
I totally agree with Ivan: phenotype and genotype don’t always correlate, no matter what people lazily believe.
And YES, the majority of blacks who could be considered “light skinned” are NOT European/ambigious looking. It’s refreshing that someone can actually see that. I’m so tired of people correlating “light skin” on a black person with “long hair” or “white features” (which are??). Please. Most are negroid. Black people can produce the colors of the rainbow. Science has concluded that fact. So, being less dark, doesn’t make you “more mixed” or “less black” at all. At least, not most of the time.

A friend of mine saw Alfre in person, when she was campaigning for Obama in North Carolina several months ago. He remarked that she’s even more beautiful in person.
Kenya Moore, alongside Angela Bassett and Salli Richardson, is easily the most stunningly beautiful woman in the industry. There’s a lot of them, of course, but something about those three is just so “special”, if that makes sense.
Kenya’s a goddess, in my eyes.
Jada’s far from ugly, but she’s nothing special, in my opinion. She always struck me as man-ish (like Alicia Keys), but that impression may have to do with what I actually know about her (and Keys).
Mya, like Jada, is from around my way. So, I was familiar with her and her family, before she became famous. She actually used to be a correspondant on BET’s “Teen Summit”. It’s funny, nobody ever looked at her as a sex symbol back then. LOL.

There is no way to MEASURE AND RANK a listing of beauty. However….I must make this comment. Why is it that when we speak of the beauty of black women, we never name her as the most beautiful PERIOD! Have you ever seen a listing where people name the 10 most beautiful white women. No. Of course not. White has become synonymous with beauty. Never will you see People magazine,Cosmo or Vogue refer to a white woman as the most beautiful WHITE WOMAN. Nor do they call their magazines…..White Magazines….though we know they are. They simply say the MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN PERIOD which implies superiority. Their magazines are referred to as MAINSTREAM. As simple as this concept is…..it keeps them in power. We must change our thinking as a people.
FYI. To see people compare beauty is nothing less or more than ABSURD! You like what you like and we all know that behind every preference is often an abundance of issues of self perception and self hatred. To anyone who has the nerve to make a negative comment about someone’s features ….I am more than certain that the object of your insult couldn’t care less for I am sure that she see’s you as the typical average brainwashed backward and ignorant fool. Why insult something that someone else likes. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE IN THAT! Does it make you feel better about yourself. Does it validate something within you? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE IN THAT?
I will however add my list of some of the famous BEAUTIFUL WOMEN who’s beauty that I simply adore.

Whitney Houston(looks like an ancient African Queen of East Africa),
Naomi Campbell(LORD HAVE MERCY), Diana Ross(the most amazing eyes and lips), Waris, Mary J (has the face of a sculpture), Jody Watley, Katoucha, Women of Somalia and Senegal have jaw dropping beauty,

But to make the list even doable I had to limit it somehow. As noted in the post it is limited to those who are famous enough to make the Wikipedia.

Amen to that! I’ve had people ask me if I got my eyes from my white mother, since they’re green, but the shape is identical to my father’s mother and very African-looking. In fact, I look a lot like her (nose, hair, eyes, skin color etc.). I don’t look anything like my mother.

Maybe we should discard the black and white labels altogether. They are colors and don’t really apply anyway.
People who are referred to as “Asian” today used to be called “yellow” many years ago. The “yellow” label has been practically eliminated, unless referring to light skinned people of African descent.
Twenty years ago, “African American” was seldom used, but today has gained acceptance. Besides, the term “light skinned black” always sounded contradictory to me. If you have a tan or brown car, you don’t describe it as a “light black car.” That does sound ridiculous, doesn’t it?

When people say “light-skinned” it is shorthand for “light-skinned for a black person”.

Right, it’s relative.

Mynameisnyname, I donāt take credit for it. You and Lilāvina made the points that color is practically irrelevant compared to features in regards to ethnic identification.
I was only expanding on your arguments and added a few observations about societal changes, such as the jargon. āAsianā has almost totally displaced āyellowā and āAfricanā or āAfrican Americanā is gradually displacing āblack.ā
All of this may be positive for these reasons:
Ā· It may be nice to move beyond the color labels.
Ā· White Americans are more likely to identify ethnically, not as white, but as Americans of (Italian, Irish, German, etc.) descent.
Ā· There is no such place as āBlackland.ā
Ā· Why should people of African descent be lumped together under the āblackā label when all the other groups have a geographical reference? Is that a vestige of inequality?
Abagond, what do you think of starting a thread “Should we discard the black and white labels?ā I think there would a lot of feedback, which would be interesting.

“There is no such place as āBlackland.ā”
Had to giggle at that. The whole racial-identification-thing is very confusing. I, for example, have two passports and two birth certificates: a German one and an American one. I’m a native speaker in both languages. I was born in Germany and lived there most of my life.
So, when people ask me what I am, I used to say, “German and American”. Inevitably, they ask again, “No, I mean, what are you REALLY?” It’s such a strange question. My German/Czech ancestors where there since the time of the Romans and my American ones (African, English, and Cherokee) here since the colonial days or before. I don’t really consider myself African at all.
But, if people ask me what I am now, I just say what they REALLY want to know: “I’m black”. What they’re really asking is: why do you have a nose like that?
I had a South African white female friend in middle school and she hated the same question (she was asked due to her accent). She’d say, “South African” and they’d say, “No, where are you REALLY from?” *roll eyes*
LikeLike
B&G, you get it! The black label is really meaningless. You are not African, as you said. You are partially of African descent with a mixture of other ethnic influences. Obviously, those who say to you “What are you really?” notice that and are curious. I don’t take credit for the āno such place as Blacklandā point. I have a female friend from college who made that argument back in the days when the “African American” term was more controversial.
LikeLike
AWG,
How is B&G “not African”? LOL.
Of course, like most western blacks she has a mixture of ethnicities but they don’t discount one another.
If someone is French and Italian, are they not French? Or not Italian? No, they’re both.
LikeLike
I am of African descent. That is undeniable. That was not my point.
But is my husband Italian simply because the Romans once occupied his village and he has a Roman nose? Isn’t there a time-limit somewhere?
Is my daughter African? What about if she has children with a European? Will their children be African? Is this the one-drop rule in perpetuity? At what point will African-Americans have been in America for so long that they cease to have any connection to the African continent?
I pointed out to my husband a few weeks ago that our children are African-American and would be eligible for affirmative action. He nearly busted a spleen laughing. His comment: “They’re whiter than me!” (and it’s true)
They don’t discount one another, but I don’t like how my entire ethnic and cultural background (which is very diverse) is reduced down to “African”. Even of my two black grandparents, one is 1/4 Cherokee and the other had more English blood than African in her (and was even paler than I am).
I prefer “black” over “Afican-American”. On the one hand, it’s silly to name an ethnic group after a color. On the other hand, I think that black people in America have an ethnicity and culture that is not simply African but rather unique and complete in it’s own right. Perhaps we need to come up with a new label…

Mynameismyname,
I understand what you are saying. B&G said “I donāt really consider myself African at all” but she also did acknowledge having African ancestry.

What is ironic is that I used to hate the term āAfrican American,ā but, over time, I accepted it and now prefer it to āblack.ā Of course, āAfrican Americanā does not apply to non-Americans. Caribbean people of African descent are referred to as āAfro-Caribbeanā and that would be consistent. Also, given the historical baggage connected to āblackā (which replaced ānegroā), I do think it is a more dignified term. If Americans of Italian descent can identify as āItalian Americanā, what is wrong with Americans of African descent identifying as āAfrican Americanā in all fairness?
I think this discussion should be in a separate thread, since it is off-topic here.

Perhaps it’s just passport-snobbery but I consider myself German-American because I have citizenship in both countries. My mother’s neighbor’s daughter is Senegalese-American for the same reason.
Being of Italian or African descent does not warrant hyphenation. They’re all just Americans to me. Isn’t being American ENOUGH? After all, a large portion of the planet would be quite happy to join the plain-old-American club.
Aaah! My kids are digging in my vegetable garden. Talk later!

I actually agree with you. I was resisting the hyphenation of American identity and found it to be a losing battle. So given a choice between the hyphenations and the archaic color designations, I would prefer to abandon the archaic color designations.

Yes, the colors don’t make much sense anymore. Especially with all the intermarriage. But the hyphen-technique has its drawbacks, as well. Here’s how a recent post-party conversation with my husband went:
Me: Nice party, don’t you think?
Him: Yeah.
Me: Isn’t it nice that we weren’t the only mixed couple there?
Him: Huh?
Me: Didn’t you notice that X’s wife was Asian-American?
Him: No. How could you tell?
Me: Oh, her eyes were a bit slanty.
Him: Her eyes were a bit slanty. So she belongs to the slanty-eyed Asian-American group.
Me: Yes.
Him: How else is she different from her husband?
Me: (wracking my brains) Oh… I don’t know.
Him: You don’t know. So because she has slanty-eyes she’s somehow special. And we have something in common with that couple because my wife has slanty-eyes, too.
Me: Yes. But my eyes are African slanty-eyes. It’s something different. (getting frustrated) Oh, you wouldn’t understand! It’s an American thing.
Him: You’re right. I don’t understand. It’s an American thing. Let me get this straight: At that party we’re all Catholic, all live in the same town, listen to the same music, have the same friends, belong to the same socio-economic group, studied the same subjects in college, share hobbies, work in the same industry, all have children, and are all the same age. But I’m supposed to feel kindred with those particular people because his wife has slanty-eyes?
Me: Aaargh! Let’s change the subject.
I hate when he does that! Germans are so… damn… logical!

In my opinion, there is a distinct difference between race and ethnicity/culture/heritage and nationality. Terminologies like Afro-Jamaican, Indio-Jamaican, African-American and Black don’t make sense to me when used interchangeably. You can be black and not be African-American. To me, black (or race in general) is how you self-identify and how other’s perceive you. But you can be black and have European (or other) heritage/ancestry. There is nothing wrong with being black, but there is also nothing wrong with accepting other portions of your ancestry. This is as long as you are equally proud of your African ancestry. I also don’t believe that there is anything the matter with showing interest in someone’s heritage/race/ethnicity/cultural mix by asking. Sometimes questions are asked innocently. I think those being questioned sometimes assume the worst of those asking. And at other times, those being asked are not as proud of their ancestry as they probably should be. And yes, there are times when those asking are doing so in order to assign stereotypes. But in general, I believe people are interested in knowing about someone’s interesting (and maybe exotic) physical features.

The Truth About African Beauty:
The reason why the beauty of blackwomen is such an explosive issue, is because, nobody wants to lay all of the facts on the table. Blackwomen have been told since their birth that whitewomen, latin women, middle-eastern women, east-indian women, asian women, and polynesian women are a notch above them, Really? What do all of the women I just listed have in common? All of them have african ancestry. Admitting the truth about “Black Female Sexuality” is explosive. It would expose everything and everybody who victimized sistas for their own sexual pleasure. It would shatter “White Supremacy” as we know it.
Tyrone, why is this important? Once sistas know the real story of the Arab and European Slave Trade, They’re Free! Understand, white racism has always been about controlling and exploiting the sexuality of blackwomen. Because, once you get past all the bulls**t, it’s about who is going to have access to our women. Non-black men desire our women, and they want us brothas out of the way by any means necessary.
REMEMBER! IT’S ABOUT THE SISTAS STUPID!!!

Black beauty , doesn’t come in one shade so why is it so bad to admire someone with curly, straight, slender nose, slim etc…

What is beauty really, all of the women on your list are as we see them beautiful but they most of them have weaves on, what will they look like without the weaves and make up?
Are we careful not to choose the most polished women instead of the most beautiful?
And if you wanna define Black beauty, don you wanna look at purely black women, whos features have not been influenced by other races???
think about it..

Isn’t this what is done with White women? We almost never see them in any other way being presented to the world unless they are perfectly coiffed, polished, and made up to perfection. A beauty standard, that according to most white people, no other woman of any other race can even come close to achieving. Although we all know that they are not representing themselves as they truly are yet we are supposed to accept that they are the most beautiful of all women.
p.s. i know, as you already stated, that you were throwing these out there in jest. š

I am mixed with black, puerto rican, jamaican, creek native american, and cheerokee native american. And all me and my bothers and sisters are mixed, my half brothers and sisters have white in them too. Anyway I used to think i was so ugly cause people used to pick on me and some black girls were jealous because me and my sisters all have long hair. And we straighten it because we think it will make us beautiful, we all have naturally curly hair not afro curly but still curly. And I know that a lot of black women feel they are not beautiful enough. I mean we are all light skinned, some of us have reddish undertones like me, and then some of my half siblings are even lighter. People are always asking me what race or nationality I am. Or they will ask me if my hair is real and when I say yes then they will say are you mixed? And I say yes and then they are like oh that’s why. That annoys me its like black women cant have nice hair. I think people of all races or nationalities have beautiful people. But the most beautiful I think are the Ethiopeans, Asians, Indians, and mixed or multiracial people. And another thing look at my picture and tell me what race or nationality came to your mind first. Or maybe you can’t tell. Just curious, cause a lot of people have a hard time guessing what I am. I think its a little funny. : )

I really enjoyed looking at this list and i think the women chosen are beautiful. It’s really sad to me that we get caught up in whose pretty, whose beautiful, and whose not. someone made a comment about Rhiannah having a wide nose or some silly comment. So what if her nose is wide, she is has her own beauty. Not everyone who is pretty is going to look the exact same. Halle berry has her own beauty. Gabrielle Union has her own beauty, Jada Pinkette-Smith has her own beauty. The woman walking down the street has her own beauty. I wish people would stop saying who looks better than who. Appreciate the beauty of women. Maybe more women would be a little bit more confident and feel better if society isn’t branding on what beautiful or not.
Less competition to worry about.

Abagond what is your definition of long hair?
Black woman do and can have long hair. Short hair is not permanent. It’s just a matter of allowing it to grow long. Many do not allow their hair to grow nor do they give it what it needs for it to do so. It’s not like we can’t have long hair. We may not have long hair in great numbers like other races of women. But we are out their.

That “one-drop rule” annoys me! Would you say it also applies to people of the same race but not the same nationality? Ex: The mom is Irish, the dad is Polish. The child claims to be…………WHAT?!? If she claims to be Polish, she ignores her mom in herself. If she claims ONLY the Irish half, she ignores her dad in herself. WHAT’S WRONG WITH CLAIMING BOTH?!? She could say she’s Polish/Irish.
The same with mixed race people. Ex: Halle Berry is NOT black. She’s mixed. The same goes for Sade, Mariah Carrey, Alicia Keys, etc………..
Perhaps it’s only about PERCEPTION. If the person LOOKS more black then blacks claim her. If she looks more white but has “one drop” of “black blood” in her, she’s still black?!?! Noooooooooo! This is just my opinion but I feel it’s a valid one.

I have a question for other black men…when you see a very attractive black woman with a white man, does it upset you or make you a little bit jealous?
I have to admit, I don’t like it. I know it’s wrong, and I shouldn’t care, but somehow I do. And it has nothing to do with any opposition to interracial dating as I have interracially dated myself. I actually understand why many black women get upset when they see a well-off or famous black man with a white woman. Many black women would hate to see Danzel dating a white woman. I notice that a lot of black models seem to date white men. That actually annoys me. For one thing, you don’t see a lot of white female models with black men(other than Heidi Klum). Yet when it’s the reverse, many black female models are with white guys.

I studied in South Africa for three years and when a black girl is pretty even white, indian or chineese people for that matter will find that girl attractive. Honestly real beauty should appeal to all races!
If only black people think you hot maybe you not that hot after all and, if only white ppl find a certain white girl attractive and all other races don’t agree then maybe she is not that hot after all! I mean really…beauty is beauty period! this whole black beauty and white beauty thing is nonsense…if u are pretty you are pretty! and by the way Alek whateva her name is, the model, the one who grew up in London…yeah that one, she is not beautiful! no ways! I’m not saying this coz she is dark skinned…I’m saying this coz she just not beautiful!!!!! and I bat there’s a lot of ppl out there who agree with me. Most beautiful black women can be found in Mozambique, a portuguese speaking country on the South Eastern coast of Africa, just above South Africa. There is a BIG difference between black and mixed-race, Obama is a ‘mulato’ in America ‘black’ means everyone who’s not white…what kind of bs is that? Most of the ladies here do not qualify as ‘black’, especially the American and Brazilian ones…Brazil is practically a nation of mixed breeds. Also I don’t find West African ladies attractive, don’t know why Cameroon is ranked near the top of your list….

Hmmmm. True enough, but then again so is the United States, as far as that goes.
And anyone who seriously believed “mixed” is necessarily prettier than “not mixed” hasn’t travelled much in Brazil. Sure there are a lot of pretty mixed people. And then there are a lot of mixed people who seem to carry the most unattractive physical traits of all their ancestors.

ribkin ,I dont think your eyes are seeing correctly. Both clips I brought in from Brazil have some women that are as dark as any woman directly from Africa.
I dont think you know Africa , there are ranges of color differances there.
It would be hard pressed to find anywhere in the world a more spectacular, beautiful, sensual incredible example of black female beauty than the passista ,in Brazil, dancing the samba for her escola da samba. Im not talking about the rainha da bateria ,who are mostly white celebrities, im talking about the passistas from the community of the escolas who are mostly black.
The samba is absolutly one of the hardest dances to do well ,in the world. Its a dance with roots squarly from Africa. Ive seen documentary films of zulu dancers doing variations on the Rio samba and the samba from Bahia , and you know the zulus did those movements first. Most Brazilians cant knock off a decent samba step.
Its funny, all the girls I brought in on these clips , including Esperanza Spalding , would have had to use the colored wash rooms in the south in the USA before the laws changed it, I dont see any reason to exclude them as great examples of beautiful black women.

If you gloss all colors from light brown to dark-almost-blue as “black”, yes. But Brazilians themselves don’t tend to see things that way.
Most Brazilians cant knock off a decent samba step.
Sorry, B.R., that’s a stereotype that pisses many Brazilians of color off. First of all, samba’s not so much Brazil as it is Rio de Janeiro and, perhaps, Salvador. Secondly, I very much doubt it’s African roots are Zulu: they are more likely Angolan or Nigerian or both. Finally, samba has a TON of other roots, many non-African such as (I sh%* you not) polka. This is why you hear “The Beer Barrel Polka” played by traditional blocos at carnaval.
As Hernano Vianna points out, samba is as much a modern, urban and syncretic musical form as jazz. It most certainly is not a pure relic of pre-modern African culture.
Its funny, all the girls I brought in on these clips , including Esperanza Spalding , would have had to use the colored wash rooms in the south in the USA before the laws changed it, I dont see any reason to exclude them as great examples of beautiful black women.
That’s always a big question: does one use Brazilian or American definitions of “black” when one looks at Brazilians? Both views have their problems and advantages.

Whoops! Just noticed you said “Most Brazilians CAN’T knock off a decent samba step.” True, that. My bad. I read that as “can”.

Thad, as far as the Zulu documentary, I was just amazed that they were doing those steps that seemed so similar to samba from Rio and Bahia. I wouldnt want to say they were the exact origin of those steps from Rio.
Sub sahara African rhythms and dances have vast differances but also similarities.
And that is what I was referring to, was the similarities of these steps. If the Zulu tribe had these steps, there is a good chance that they could have been in another African tribe near Angola or Mozambique. After all, there is a lot of similar 6/8 feeling in the drum beats of sub sahara Africa, as well as duple time rhytyms that are the roots of so many great rhythms of the Americas ,like jazz, rumba, funk, samba , mambo etc
Yes, Rio samba has a lot of influences. The fundimental rhythms and dance steps can be found in the samba da rodas in Bahia and that came to Rio, but, Chiquinha Gonzaga and the choros brought in sophisticated European harmonies.
Yeah , I think I know what you mean about polka sambas, a lot of groups from Sao Paulo and south definitly sound like they have some polka in it.

B.R., Angola and Mozambique are on opposite sides of the continent, in the first place, and there was little to no overland communication between the two until the late 19th century.
Secondly, AFAIK, the Zulus themselves were never anywhere near Angola or Mozambique during the years of Portuguese suzerainty. They were an expanding and imperial nation in their own respect – very dangerous folk. They weren’t conquered until the very end of the 20th century and – again AFAIK – they contributed no significant numbers of slaves to the new world.
The Zulus were strictly badass.
As for polka, it didn’t come out of SP: it was a development out of urban, port town Rio de Janeiro. You’re thinking of polka as German folk tradition. By the late 19th century, it had already become a mass cultural product which was exported across the world. A lot of Rio’s polka influence, in fact, came from the U.S. and not Europe.
For a VERY good and factual account of samba’s roots that distinctly demystifies the afro-primitivism some people would like to attribute to the musical style, let me suggest
Hermano Vianna’s The Mystery of Samba. An excellent book!
http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Samba-Popular-National-Identity/dp/0807847666
Finally – and the musical folks can back me up on this one – samba has very little to do, rhythmatically or otherwise – with the 6/8 beat you’re talking about. Samba is basically 2/4.
LikeLike
LOL at the comment re: Chiquinha Gonzaga, btw. I’ve never heard of her being described as a purveyor of “sophisticated European harmonies” before. At the time, she most “sophisticated Europeans” considered her to be a ordinary lil’ mulata girl who made obscene music.

Thad, I said that many African rhythms had similarities like 6/8 , and some dance steps all over the sub sahara continent. There is every reason to beleive the Zulus had some of these similarities as well as differances uniqe to them that I know .
I said duple rhythm, also, that is 2/4 . 6/8 feels had its influence on American jazz.
And the people who really were playing the beat in Samba da Rodas in Bahia , who brought those beats and dance steps to Rio, didnt think in western terms. It wasnt until people like Gonzaga started writing these songs did they use the European style of writing to interperate it , meaning they staffed it in 2/4.
What ever the classical composers thought of her, she did organise those musical elements into writing it down. She was in charge of inventing the music union and copy righting in Brazil.

Ill try to look into that book, but, trust me, I dont get my information from books about music , I get it from the musicians themselves. Not that books cant be informative.
Authors can put their own spin on it , but, musicians and dancers are the real source of where it came from.
I suggest comparing histories of music from as many differant sources as you can and trying to make your conclusion out of that, never rely on one book to tell you the story. And always go to the musicians , they are the most important source about the music .They can tell you things about the music an intellectual writing about it never could.

Sorry, man: that’s the myth, not the way history has it. Samba coalescing in Rio was a lot more complicated than the mythical “Bahians brought in an unsullied Ioruban cultural form”. For one thing, samba was also influenced by jongo, a carioca Angolan-based cultural form.
And no, all African music is not really pretty much all alike at heart, just as European music isn’t. The zulus and the ioruba had next to no contact with each other and close to zero cultural diffusion betwen them.
I’m not aware, actually, that Chiquinha wrote any sambas down at all. Lundus, maybe. Corta jacas, certainly. All these musical forms are as different from one another as polka is from, say, Dixieland.

Hermano comes from one of the most musically active families in town, with a loooooong history of participation in our local music scene. His brother was a leader in Brazil’s transformative rock movement during the 1980s and ’90s. He studied under one of Rio’s most renowned musical anthropologists, a man also deeply involved in the city’s music scene.
In this town, music and academia have been feeding off and interacting with each other for 80 years. Things are not as neatly compartmentalized as they are in the states.
(As an aside, I’m getting kinda tired of the American presumption that academics all live in a rarified ivory tower and never deal with reality. I wish Americans would stop it with this tired old crap. You are the only people in the entire world who believe that “intellectual” is a nasty word and that people who actually take the time to really investigate something down to its roots are, in fact, butt ignerint and obviously alienated. Why do you people constantly make this ridiculous presumption?)

That last bit’s not a crack on you specifically, B.R. It’s more by way of a general observation. The United States is the only place in the world where a man or a woman who’s dedicated their life to studying something will routinely be called a “know-nothing” by people who are amateurs and enthusiasists. In part, I think it’s democratic. Mostly, however, I think it’s insulting and really arrogant.
For the record, no, I do not think that people who live in the middle of something necessarily have a better or more real view of it than anyone else. Observation, analysis, shared information, some sort of constructed objectivity, no matter how contingent… All this is also necessary for a decent analysis of things.
So when it comes down to choosing between the viewpoint of a guy who’s vibrantly involved in the carioca musical scene and WHO ALSO has done deep documentary and historical researchj on it, versus some other guy who may be a great musician, but who hasn’t ever looked beyond the “truths” that he’s received as child… Well, I know who’ll I’ll go for, every time. Both guy’s opinions are important, but only one of them has the information that will really allow one to put the scene into perspective.

I told you there were differances in African music and similarities. Quit your bad habit of mischaractorising what people say.I have many African records that are all over sub sahara Africa, and they all have 6/8 beats and grooves similar in duple meter as well as specific differances.
If Zulus couldnt get to other parts of Africa, how could Oprahs ancesters wind up on a slave ship to America? You are loosing credibility wth every step here , Thad, you better understand, i know more about music and Brazilian music than you do.

And samba is huge, it has absorbed many differant styles and aproaches, from marchas, frevo, even funk, but the very essential beat and dance step comes from those samba da rodas. If you know anything about the beat, you could see how it absolutly dominates all the other influences.
Jongo is more in 6/8 and you can see some of their steps in the Porta Bandeira and Mestre Sala, but ,the basic samba step comes from those roda da baianas.
Do you know how to dance the samba, Thad? I do,and not as a week long lesson, Ive been studying it for years. I dont even think Vianna could crack off a decent step.
As an aside , Thad,im getting tired of your condencending atitude. I dont care what you choose to beleive, Ive been in Brazil longer than you have, I know as much about Brazilian music as you know about Brazilian anthropology.
You can choose the Viannas to beleive, but ,ill choose Luizao Maia over him any , any , any day week month or year, and ,Gilson Peranzzetta, Fabinho Costa, Elza Soares and the musicians I know in the North east and the dancers i know from Bahia.

I’ll respond in Portuguese, a language we both share. What I’d really like at this point is a PM function. I ask Abagond’s indulgence this once and invite you to continue this discussion over on my blog if you like, B.R., as we’ve really jumped the shark on this one I think. It’s about as far off topic as it could go, now.
NĆ£o sei com quem estou falando, B.R. Ć isto? E devo saber?
Most people on this list do not qualify as black.
If you don’t look like me ( have both black parents and 4 black grandparents ), you are not black.
IMHO Dark is not always synonymous with beautiful.
Southern African black Women > West/Central/Northern Black Women
I really don’t understand the fascination with Brazil, despite what you see on TV, there is a LOT of negative things about their over-sexualized, crime-infested culture.
I don’t give a flying **** about Samba and don’t see how it is relevant to the topic at hand.

I should always know to cut and paste becaue the blog went out on a long answer, here is the hack version
see about ribkin, I still think the passista is the highest form of black beautiful sensual exitement that you can find in women on the planet, I dont care what you think.
Thad, really , get serious, I respect Palaramos, I respect immensly Hermanos docu, but , can you show me one video they did that they really cut a monster samba? They are fantastic Americanised rock musicians with great Brazilian influences put in. Im talking about some of the greatest musician on the planet, who can stand toe to toe with the greatest musicians anywhere in the world. Do you think they can handle the kind of sophisticated harmonies at the tempo these great musicians can ,or push the samba groove as deep? They sure made more money, are more popular, and , in public of course these people would give them respect.
But Luizao used to come over to my apartment , and we would talk music and I guarentee that he knows his abilities are higher than the Rio rock musicians.Same with Paulo. Do you think he would think Palaramas could be on the same bandstand as he was with Luis Avelar and Carlos Bala and cook the way they did? or with Gilson Peranzzetta? They just couldnt hang, and im not putting them down as much as defending against you using them as a bludgeon .
Luizao innovated how to play samba bass, any bass player playing samba is 3/4 Luizao. Where is Palaramas equal to that? Have you ever heard his music? Banda Bonzai? Kudos if you have, but that is the real Luizao and its histroy and education, and never got recorded . Can you really in any way state what that innovation is? because i know what it is and it just floors me , it bring goose bumps. Can Palaramas play bop like Luizao or Paulo? Heck no
Im puting this up now and continuing my answer…
sorry people this discusion has turned into chinese, but, at least it keeps the thread going…

Why are you lying about what I said about 6/8 in African music? I didnt say all sub sahara music is in 6/8, I said its in most all of the cultures in sub sahara Africa along with duple meter.
Its part of the African genius, their gift to the world, call responce rhythms with dances specificly made to go with them like none other in the world except their diaspora.
Its like funk has many variations all over the USA, the Oakland stroke, New Orleans meters feel, Miami Cuban influence, New York hard edge slap bass ala Marcus Miller, gogo sound from DC.They all are differant from differant areas but with deep groove…that is the African gift, that deep call responce groove and dances to go along with it, that can release the spirit in a very special way. They tapped into that and gave it to the world and its has dominated the world.
The Zulu steps I saw like samba werent the normal steps of Zulu ive seen, but it floored my how close to samba from Rio it was, and another step like samba from Bahia like they do.But i didnt say they got it directly from them. I said it mus be a step that was passed from tribe to tribe over centuries. A tribe near Mozambique might not have crossed paths but a tribe next to a tribe next to a tribe did.Ive got records from Africa that have all have thier own interpretaions of 6/8 ,using that bell pattern you can find in condomble 6/8, but each one unique.
Its great to have a docu by Hermano, but , its like a jazz dj who knows all the records recorded, knows who the players are, knows can really give you the histroy, but you better get out and see Art Blakey or Elvin Jones play, because they are telling you the histroy in their playing, like Luizao did.
Man, great if you name is out here, but, what am I going to gain from showing you what I do and have you get arrogant with it, because you have been called on your arrogance on here and there is every reason to know you are going to be flipant about any information i give you.
And , sure you speak better Portuguese than me, but i dance better samba than you.I would just butcher a marvelous language to try to write Portugues. You are a college boy, I work the street at night.
Go ahead and bring it up in your blog if you want

South African women have an elegant type of beauty. African American women have a sensuous type of beauty. West African women tend to have a combination of both. East African women who look like Iman have a type of beauty that seems to go back to the beginning of time. North African women and black european women have a classy type of beauty. Carribean women have a magnetic type of beauty. If I missed anyone, I apologize.

ahhhh ribkin, its much more than that….
Its about the passista is one of the highest forms of “black beautiful sensual exitement” in women of color, packed in an incredible art of dance and drumming in the Brazilian culture:
Please dont let the color of my skin get in the way of enjoying a cultural phenominon, ( dont mind Thad, he wouldnt know about this)
I mean at least let me know you think these dancers Ive been brining in are black, beautiful , sensual and esiting…..you are making work hard here, ribkin ahhhhhh lol.
People should know , its very common to refer to the passistas as “mulatas”, that is in the titls. The girls themselves refer to each other as that. Its just part of the culture.

nice video btw… to each his own. For you, beauty, is interpreted in a highly superficial, sexual manner… the dancers are incredible, don’t get me wrong
it is kinda weird though, to have black women feauturing in clip about ‘mulatas’, in my country mulatos and blacks are two different social classes
B.R. I think you have a sexual attraction to these ‘passistas’, plain and simple, call it whatever you want it, i.e. “highest forms of āblack beautiful sensual exitementā… listen to yourself speak. It’s one thing to admire beauty, and another to be a sexual pervert.
You are probably a middle-aged, overweight white guy who lives near a high school and preys on black teens…lol

Its just culture, ribkin, wonderful culture. These are the high leval dancers doing a very hard dance. These are the equivalant of the Boshoi ballet dancers in Russia (meaning the best dancers are).
These dancers go out in public and dance in front of people 8 to 80 in Brazil, they are on public tv at carnival at all hours.
Im having fun with this , anyway, for sure the title is “Most beautiful black women” and I think Im contributing…no?

IMO a ‘culture’ that objectifies women in this way is not really much of a culture at all…luckily for you, culture is one of those things that is exempt from criticism.
Somehow this went from being about objective beaty, to subjective beauty… from now on I’ll reserve my judgement about whether a woman is appealing to me until I see her shaking her booty in a thong.
I have a Slavic girfriend who can’t dance to save her life š

Every one has a right to their opinion.
I just would like to point out that, there are many modern dance companies and even some ballet companies in the Western tradition that use nudity in their performances.
The beats and dance steps in these clips (please include all I have brought in in this judgement) are very informed by Afro centric concepts, and by all stretch of the imagination, they reach a high leval by those standards.
Granted , you did say culture is above a kind of judgemental criticism, but, why does this culture have to be sentanced to the bottom of the cultural spectrum?
I never look on this culture as sexual, I call it black, beautuful , sensual , exiting and dificult to master.
and…for and overweight , middle age white guy, its the electricty bolt I need to jump start the old ticker…
dont worry, I would never judge somedodies girl freind by whether they can dance or not…I just love to knock off a few samba steps myself

Correction-#1 “Vilayna LaSalle”
Her real name is Denise S. (I’ll spare full disclosure of her last name because I don’t want to put her all the way on front street.) I’ve known Denise and her sister Felecia, mother, father and oldest sister since the 4th grade, through elementary, middle, & highschool. Hell, she lived a down the street.
And while gorgeous she definately is (ALWAYS was) it really burns me up that she has told the world she is “mixed” with Brazillian and Creole. That’s just rediculous. Both her parents are African American-not Creole, not Brazillian. She adds that bit of flair to her persona so that she can be classifed as “exotic”, in order to boost her hireability. She’s not proud to be Black.
The sad truth is, “Exotic” models are just more in demand in the hip hop world than “Black” models are, and she knows this. They didn’t care how black she was when she was swinging from a stripper pole after graduation though; I really don’t know why she thinks they will care at this point of her “career” as a C list video vixen or while modeling nude for Playboy.

Some West Africans are attractive but alot of the actresses I see in Nollywood movies tend to look a bit mannish and too heavy. Also, big noses are a turn-off for me. But they are alot better looking than most of the women I’ve seen from NC. That’s where that fat donkey Fantasia came from. It’s like they took all of the ugliest black women across the country and decided to put them in one state to kept other people from stoning them to death. Just like what they did to all fat white women and put them in Wisconsin

I think any black women is beautiful. There is beauty in every race. Im half African American and half Eritrean. But my moms side (African American=west African) take over my dads east African side making me look more west African than Eritrean. I love the habesha looks, they are very distinct, you cant tell a hebasha person walking down the street because of the way they look. Im kinda sad I don’t have more of their looks.

Don’t mind me. I’m very picky when it cames to looks. I’m artist. There are a lot of whites I think ugly as well. Sarah Jessica Parker and Natalie Portman look weird as hell to me. I don’t know how Natalie is able to close your month. I don’t really care about skin color or hair texture. I go more facial features and tend to like slim/lanky figures. All hair textures to me are pretty to me as long it’s long, healthy and soft. It does annoy that when people think black people=West African.

What they all have in common is WHITE DNA in their genes!
If you look at the photos of Black slaves you will see the Negro features. Now when the White man started having sex with the slaves, the White DNA began to change those pronounced Negro features in many Blacks. I understand there might be a debate about which type of Black women look better, but its expected because we are human, and we have different perspectives. I am personally Nigerian. I’m not being conceited but I have been told I am beautiful, but sometimes I feel insecure because I feel that I might be second-grade compared to a White woman. The thoughts haunt me so many times. However, I am improving. I believe that beautiful Black women are found everywhere, no matter their nationality. Perhaps, the best looking Black women are from Brazil, the West Indies, West Africa and East Africa (not in order). Still, there are beautiful Black women everywhere. Let us not forget that.

We make very good models because we’re beautiful and thin. Stop hatin’. Oh come on Luca! This post is simply a list of Abagond’s choices for the 10 most beautiful Black women.
– Where above does he say that Black women are objectively “the most beautiful?”
-Where does Abagond say that Black women are “superior?”
-Where does he downgrade the looks of white women?
Can you see the difference now?

To me Cameroon has the most exotic girls in West and Central Africa, maybe I am being biased!! I am half-Cameroonian and half-Jamaican!! But that is where the most slave trade happened, and I know from my Cameroonian side, I have spanish, chinese, arab, portugease and brazillian. And Jamaicans are gorgeous too, they are soooooo beautiful, and I know that this side of me has moxture of everything, but… Opinions ain’t facts, so get over it. Oh… I would say Somali tie with Cameroon then West Indies. And to me Rihanna does not have white features, all she has is light skin. Someone with European features would be Iman. And BeyoncĆØ has more Aftican than Naomi Campbe. Bey is half black, half creole (black with other significent ethnicities in the blood) while Na is half Jamaican (stand up) half chinease.

Charlene got it right Cameroonian women are so hot and shapeful, so diversed beauties and body in this country, I’m not from there I’m Tanzanian where women are really hot too, in Cameroon women are different from where you are geographically speaking, the Hausa and Bantus beauties are so representated well up there you can just look at it on the street.
I would say Cameroon, Angola, Tanzania, Guinea Conakry and Nigeria.
East African are charming as well but used to have the same kind of beauty.

Nice blog about the most beautiful black woman. As a white man who married a very beautiful Congolese woman about more than a year ago i couldn’t disagree. African women are truly something to truly behold they have unbelievable beauty and they are sophisticated, sleek and sexy. The opinions of were the most beautiful African women come from are just opinions and thats thats. As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder……

The black women in South Africa are very beautiful. They typically have high cheekbones and fine strong faces.
I call it God’s joke: putting one of the world’s most beautiful black races right next to one of the world’s ugliest white races. Hard to believe that apartheid didn’t work the other way round!
..and before anyone gets their knickers in a twist: I am white and know that I’m making sweeping stereotypical and superficial statements. I know that not all of my white South African cousins look like crap. Take Charlize Theron for example (ok… nobody mention her role in Monster).
The truth is that the world is full of a wonderful mix of beautiful and ugly people of all shapes and colours.
I’ve just got to figure out a way of nabbing me one of the beautiful ones before she notices how ugly I am.

Well the reason Halle Berry and Zoe Saldana shouldnt be on the list is becasue they are both mixed. I want to see full on black women with the natural kinky hair texture here.
The One Drop Rule is stupid and makes no sense, just like the people who made it. How can “black” cancel out “white”. It’s like mixing blue and yellow and calling it blue when it’s obviously green.

Im kinda sad I donāt have more of their looks.”
Wow. I have never heard of that mix before. Eritrean mixed with African American!? I’m Eritrean myself and can’t believe it lol not saying you are lying but I have never heard of an Eritrean being with an African American,
if we marry non Eritreans (which is rare) we tend to marry white so it’s very surprising to hear of an Eritrean marrying an African American š
And yes we do have very recessive genes which is why we tend not to marry non Eritreans.

In my opinion beauty should be “racialised” because every race has unique features. In Southern Africa a women is considered not sexy if she is having “flat behind” like the Chinese. while in senegal or somalia, a women with ” Ikebe super” (Nigerian slang for big bums) as weird.

That’s true. I’m part Somaili and I have the body type (long torso, legs, and flat behind) I do find really big butts like Buffie and Jeniefer Lopez weird. Some people thinks it’s weird for me not to want a big butt, but I like being flat. I prefer to be thin and lanky or being thick. I don’t get the appeal. Nikki Minaj and Angel lov shouldn’t got those butt injections. They look like cartoons to me.

I think your view of beauty is “the more sub-saharan a woman looks, the more beautiful you think she is”. If we look at beauty on a broader scale where it’s not “African beauty standards”, and rather look at it in a universal scale, none of the women you mentioned would make the list coz not everyone digs the whole “African beauty” thing.
Beyonce, Halle Berry and Alicia Keys are waaaaay better looking than the women you listed (Combined).
1. Ethiopians
2. Somalis
3. Kenyans(Not all but the Kikuyus, Swahilis and Taitas only)
4. Nigerians(lgbos to be precise)

This is my list and this is what I dig. Screw being “universal”, which in most cases is just a nice way of saying “white” and so is hardly universal at all! White people make up less than a fourth of the world. Beyonce, Halle Berry and Alicia Keys are all beautiful women, of course, but to me they are not waaaaay better looking than the women I listed. Hardly.

Forgive me, this may be a bit off topic. However, I’ve noticed a trend in some of the comments posted under this article.
I’ve noticed that quite a few commenters are fevent advocates of being termed “mixed” rather than being considered “black”.
“Also, the one drop rule is the reason why WEāRE all seen as black. Not a mixture.”
As unfortunate as this may seem, America is not the only nation that’s under the influence of the “one drop rule”. If you don’t believe me, google the experiences of mixed french models ( having a black parent and white parent). See what the global fashion industry has to say about them.
This may sting to hear, but, as far as most non-black people are concerned, we’re all black. Wether you look like Halle Berry, Zoe Saldana, or Naomi Campbell. The differences that we see mean little to the majority of non-black people, at lease outside of Latin America.
I have two black parents. However, both of their lineages are heavily mixed with white relatives. I am mixed. I consider myself black because that part of my heritage is seen by most non-black people (many of whom, will be responsible for considrering my resumĆ© to J.P. Morgan’s department for financial analysts.) I have come to terms with that. Mainly because “black” people in this country look foolish when we aruge about these differences.
We should really be more concerened with economic growth and education amongst “blacks”. When we achieve more economic clout, non-blacks will want to recognize our “mixed” ethnic backgrounds.
By the way, Vilayna Lasalle is rightfully at the top of this list. This woman literally won the genetic lottery. Her genes lined up in such a way that produced an extraordinarily lovely being. I can honestly say that I would not want to stand next to her in a photo shoot :P.

Where do people get these ridiculous figures from? Imagine 90% of Blacks mixed with Indians! Thats higher than the percentage mixed with Whites.
But also, notice the dimwit path of racist illogic:
– All Black women are ugly / but What about the ones everyone says aren’t?
– OK, then MOST Black women are ugly / Then explain the beauty?
– Well, ALL the beauty comes from other races / How many blacks are mixed?
– 90% of them!!!! They’re almost ALL mixed!!!
Hmmm… OK so if 9 out of 10 of Black women are mixed with “Indians blood” then are 90% of Black women beautiful then?
NO!!!
Then are 90% of Indian women beautiful? Isn’t that even higher than the percentage of beautiful White women?
NO!!!!!!
Then are they only beautiful when they get mixed together? Is there some kind of Black/Indian genetic beauty magic that happens?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Shakespeare expressed this in Love ‘s Labours Lost:
” beauty, though but mean
Needs not the painted
flourish of your praise:
Beauty is bought by
judgement of the eye,
Not utter’d by base sale of
chapmen’s tongues”
I live in Cape Town, South Africa where some of the most beautiful women in the world live. There is a great diversity to our looks, testament to a complex cultural heritage. It is very special to behold beautiful South African Black women because just the other day during Apartheid we were made out to be ugly by whites. I think many do not how beautiful they are and still compare themselves unfavourably to white women.
I think BBW increase their beauty when they have less accoutrements, make-up, weaves, etc.
In my travels in Africa and abroad, I have seen many heart stopping beautiful black women. BBW have that unique ineffable something, but I won’ t go into which region or “race” has the most beautiful women. Comparisons are odious. I think there are beautiful women the world over.
For my list of BBW, these are some of the women( in the media) whom I think are the epitome of beauty. Shari Belafonte, to me, is the most beautiful of any nationality. The rest are in no particular order:
1. Shari Belafonte: American actress
2. Naomi Campbell: British supermodel
3. Iman: Ethiopian model
4. Alice Walker: Great American writer
5 .Hlubi Mboya: South African actress
6 Bonang Matheba: South African celebrity.
7 .Lena Horn: Great American Jazz singer
8. The young Whitney Houston: Great American singer
9 Vanessa Williams: American actress
10: Diana Ross: Great American singer
Special mentions of the exquisite aesthetic of the BBW: Miss Botswana Miss Universe: Mpule Kwelagobe Dorothy Dandridge; Dianne Carrol; Thandie Newton; ; Joelle Kayembe, Josephine Baker ; Arlensis Sosa Pena; Damara Lewis and many more.
I can see how BeyoncĆ© can be considered beautiful although I don’t like her music and don’ t quite know what all the fuss is about. Same goes for Halle Berry. Alek Wek might beautiful in real life, and perhaps not photogenic.
There’s something very special about Ethiopian women. There is a regality and self assurance there, that I intuit has something to do with not being colonized by whites. The Himba women, of Namibia ,too, are arresting.
I understand Black to be: i a positive identification of all people who are not white. Under this umbrella, there all the combinations of mixed heritage of African descent. It is also shorthand and neutral for all the diverse people of African descent.
Just commenting here on different beauties, brings to mind how wonderfully diverse we earthlings are.
Thank you Mr Abagond for your superb blog.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Yet, I think that most beholders never realize how much things like money and social standing influence who can afford to be beautiful.
The simple power of being able to afford makeup and get your hair done on a regular basis makes a HUGE difference in who is considered beautiful.
Take that away, and even movie stars begin to understand why people who can hardly make ends meet are so often not perceived as beautiful. And that’s not even to mention plastic surgery, Botox, and Collagen.
