YaYa Da Costa (1982- ) is an American actress. She came in second in 2004 on season three of Tyra Banks’s “America’s Next Top Model”. She beat Toccara Jones but lost to Eva Pigford. She was also the lead female character in the film “Take the Lead” (2006), a true story where Antonio Banderas changes lives by teaching ballroom dancing in a rough part of New York.
Her full name is Camara YaYa Da Costa Johnson:
- Camara is her given name. It is African.
- YaYa is what she started calling herself at four.
- Da Costa comes from her mother, whose father is from Brazil.
- Johnson is from her father
YaYa Da Costa is her stage name, sometimes written as Yaya Dacosta.
She grew up in Harlem in New York, the daughter of a university professor and a school teacher.
She has wanted to be an actress ever since she was four. She learned acting, dancing and music after school. But her parents wanted her to get a good education and not pin her hopes on acting. So they sent her to boarding school in New England. She worked hard – and acted in some plays along the way. She got into Brown, an Ivy League university, one of the best in the country. There she studied International Relations and African Studies.
She also studied in Brazil for a while. She even appeared in an ad there for Seda. She can speak Portuguese as well as Spanish and French.
While she was at Brown she wanted to take a break from writing a 30-page paper. So she filled out the form for “America’s Next Top Model” for some laughs. But then later she was chosen to be one of the 14 women of season three!
She was by far the best model of the 14. She has beautiful eyes and one of those thin bodies that look like a work of art that fashion designers love. But on the show she seemed like she was looking down on everyone. So the judges gave first prize to Eva Pigford instead.
Da Costa says she does not look down on people, but was made to seem that way on television. But she is proud all the same. For example, she did not straighten her hair like most black models. It was nice to see, but still it was a sign of her pride
Even though she came in second, Ford still signed her up as a model. She appeared in many different magazines and did television ads for RadioShack, Fructis, Oil of Olay and others. She also appears as a model in the music video “Pulling Me Back” (2006) by Chingy and Tyrese.
Today she no longer models but is working on becoming a great film actress. Not great in the sense of being a famous Hollywood star, but great in being able to touch lives for the better. Among the actresses she looks up to are Angela Bassett and Alfre Woodard.
She went back to Harlem to find her old high school acting teacher. She has helped her to get started on the road.

YaYa is a very beautiful model, I will give you that; but the statement: “she did not straighten her hair like most black models” seems a bit irrelevant. The sheer fact that YaYa is of both African American and Brazilian descent allows one to realize that her hair is not as kinky, or coarse in texture as a black model of only African American descent. There is not as large of a market for African American models with unstraightened hair. I would like to see her ‘non-straightened’ hair if she did not possess Brazilian roots.

Only i’m sure she looks far better than you do, she’s more articulate and educated and she can spell far more complicated words than you could. look at your comment, i had to read it several times to make sense of what you wrote. your english and your spelling is soooo bad.

@ #8 You can’t seriously have a PhD with the way you spell or type. Your dialogue is incomprehensive yet you question Yaya’s education and even downs it. A piece of cake to get a degree? Obviously it isn’t for you & it shows. Are you jealous? Its evident that you are & that’s ok, just know what u r talking about when you speak or type & be sure u hit spell check before you click the send button.
Love your post on Yaya. I’ve met her & worked with her and she’s not how she is portrayed. Actually the ANTM girls all spoke highly of her and felt she didn’t put them down at all so you might want to research your “put everbody down” comment. Eva was the true bitch but that’s another post.
Love lives YaYa!

just want to thank the poster for this lovely little tribute to yaya and her growing career. becoming successful in one’s art is a feat enough without all the haters and their negative comments. yaya is and has always been a true gem and inspiration for those of us who know and love her.
i do want to point out (as a family member), that her father is NOT brazilian or portuguese. both parents are american of mixed descent born in the states as their parents were. as many americans do, she has both her mother’s and father’s last name. her mother’s name is daCosta (from her grandfather who migrated from north brazil before the depression) and father’s name is johnson ( son of john. . .american history, do the blood math). her name is camara and her she named herself ‘yaya’ when she was 4 ( notice the recurrance of ‘a’ and imagine a child’s phonectics :-). because of how perfectly it fit her and its universal roots ( its not JUST african, it is used in greece, and all over the world). like many artists, she choose a more concise professional name. . . . maybe one day harold gates jr. will do a geneology report on this lovely representation of american history and diffuse all the assumptions and ‘ownership’ that people put on her heritage.
in the meantime it is nice to know that she has positive people rooting for her as she continues to bless our screenes and billboards and reach her dreams.
she is simply gorgeous!
namaste.

Wow, many of the previous posters behind me are stupid. Many of them think that Brazilian is a race or ethnicity. Many Afro-Brazilians have the name Yaya, it’s not exclusively Mozambican. As far as anyone knows, Yaya does not have any Mozambican ancestry, although she does have Nigerian ancestry aside from Afro-Brazilian ancestry. Yaya’s father is Brazilian. Yaya is not an “African American and Brazilian mix”… WTH is that? I should say that African Americans are an African and American mix, see how much sense that makes? NONE. You idiots need to learn to distinguish national background from race. Her Brazilian father is black. In fact there are more blacks in Brazil than the USA. Brazil has the largest population of African background outside of Nigeria, you dense-minded morons.

First of all I’m french, so sorry for the mistakes I’ll make.
so I read the comments on Yaya background, I wanna point out things about it
Yaya is african american with nigerian and brazilian background. Somebody say she doesn’t need to straighen her hair because of her brazilian background and she would do it if she was only black american. This point is stupid cause in brazil like in USA there are a lot of black live there, cause their ancestries were slaves like the black in USA. so brazilian doesn’t mean automatically mixed, there are whites (from portugal) indians and blacks. and blacks in brazil are discriminated and it’s worst than in USA cause portuguese are racist I know it because in france there is a huge portuguese community and people from cabo verde and angola are discriminated in portugal. So yaya is totally black and I proud that she stay away from the pressure of relaxers

I named my daughter after her(YaYa),that’s my daughter’s “nickname”. I really do admire her so much. She came in and her first statement was “I’m here to represent a beauty that is black”. That just made me fall in love with her.She was blunt, confident, beautiful, articulate, and not afraid to be herself. She’s a good role model to young african women and women in general. I love natural hair(locs, fros, braids, twist) and I love seeing black women who love the way they look. Not the ones making justifications for why they alter their hair texture and wear weaves(all of them have either been brainwashed as a child by their female family members or they are ashamed of the way they naturally look(self hatred).
Anyway,YaYa was the best thing that ever happened to ANTM and I’ve never watched again after her season.Tyra Banks has self hatred issues and I think that Tyra was jealous and intimidated by YaYa’s education, boldness, and the fact that she had pride in her heritage.

I loved YaYa at first. She is gorgeous and smart. But editing cannot make you say things that didn’t come out your mouth. Confident is not cocky. Sometimes you have to step back and learn instead of knowing it all and being in charge.
I think deep down she knew she didn’t want to model but to act. I’m happy for her success. It pays to be a strong woman, especially in hollywood. But you also need to have a slice of humble pie every now and then.
BTW: Plenty of Brazilians are not of Euro decent but of African decent. Brazian is a nationality like American or Puerto Rican. It doesn’t describe one’s race, color or genetic background.

Uh, sorry…?
Angel, B are pretty damned mixed. African-Americans are too, for that matter. It would be rare to find pure anything in Brazil. As for you not being mixed, how would you know, beyond your grandparents that is?

I don’t know what the fuss over her hair is… Yaya has kinky 4a type hair that is widely found in W. Africa; I have the same hair type. Obviously no one here watched the season she was on ANTM and had braids and when she took it out, had a fro.
She just curls it, does braidouts, or uses gel/pudding to define the curls.

there are a lot of black brazilians…. besides i am african and i have the same hair… i’m not mixed 100% zimbabwean! and i know a lot of black girls with 3c type hair too! so yes a pure african can have loose curls… what’s with all the hate for african hair? i know a lot of europeans with type 3c hair too!
and i think they didn’t like Ya Ya because she was afrocentric… and once they attacked her because she picked an african ispired outfit saying she wanted to prove that she was african (wasn’t she supposed to show her personal style?)
