Angela Bassett (1958- ), an American actress, is perhaps the best black female actress alive in Hollywood. She is both more beautiful and far more talented than Halle Berry, the only black woman so far to win an Oscar for best actress. Bassett has played Tina Turner, the wife of Malcolm X (twice) and the mother of Biggie Smalls.
Some of her films:
- 1991: Boyz N the Hood
- 1992: Malcolm X
- 1993: What’s Love Got to Do with It
- 1995: Waiting to Exhale (pictured above)
- 1995: Strange Days
- 1998: How Stella Got Her Groove Back
- 2006: Akeelah and the Bee
- 2008: Meet the Browns
- 2009: Notorious
I already knew who she was by the time she appeared in “Malcolm X” but apparently it was playing Tina Turner a year later in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” that made her name with mainstream American audiences.
She lost the lead in “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” (1999) to Halle Berry. She turned down the lead in “Monster’s Ball” (2001) because of how it shows black women – and because she does not do nude scenes. Halle Berry took that part and went on to win an Oscar for best actress.
Angela Bassett was born on the very same day as Madonna: August 16th 1958. She was born in Harlem but her mother soon moved to St Petersburg, Florida, where she grew up in public housing.
In 1974 she saw James Earl Jones in “Of Mice and Men” on a school trip to Washington, DC:
I just sat there after the play, boo-hoo crying, weeping. I couldn’t move, and I remember thinking, “My gosh, if I could make somebody feel the way I feel right now!”
From that moment she began to think about becoming an actress.
She got a scholarship to Yale. After getting her degree in African American Studies, she studied acting at the Yale School of Drama. She had to unlearn her Southern accent. There she met Courtney B. Vance, whom she would one day marry.
After Yale she acted in some television ads, the soap opera “Guiding Light” and two August Wilson plays. Then her friend Larry Fishburne helped her to land a part in “Boyz N the Hood”. She played the mother of the main character – but to her she was playing her own mother. That got her noticed as a serious actress in Hollywood.
In 1993 she starred opposite Fishburne in “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, with her cast as Tina to his Ike. She broke her hand during shooting – but that only helped her to play Tina Turner even better. Tina Turner did her make-up and taught her the dance moves. One reviewer said that Bassett, “captures the erotic youthquake that was Tina Turner in the ’60s and early ’70s”.
In 1997 she married actor Courtney B. Vance. He played her husband when she appeared in the last season of “ER” (2008-2009). They have a boy and a girl: Slater and Bronwyn, both born in 2006 by means of a surrogate mother (Bassett was 47 at the time of their birth).

Ms. Bassett is a gifted actress. The way Angela potrayed Tina Turner in the movie, I honestly thought she was Tina. Halle Berry has nothing on her.

Angela Bassett is one of the most talented actresses I know of. And one of the most beautiful women in the world. Period.
I don’t know why she isn’t widely recognized as one of the best actresses. She is such a talented woman, and yes, so beautiful.
I remember her back in mid 90s. I watched “Strange Days” and “Contact” (one of my favourite movies). Later I tried to find and watch as many of her films as possible. It was not always an easy task.

I watched “Malcolm X” just last night for the second time, and her performance made me forget I was watching a movie. The tension between her character, Betty, and Malcolm near his assassination is thick. And the shot of her crying face when he is murdered displayed such real, palpable sadness.
Anyway, I too agree that she doesn’t get nearly as much credit for being an intelligent, beautiful, and mesmerizing actress.

“She lost the lead in “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” (1999) to Halle Berry.”
Rightfully so. Halle is a much better Dorothy Dandridge because she is the spitting image. I don’t think Angela would have been as believable.
But as a whole, Angela is far more talented than most actresses.

Halle Berry lost the lead in “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” to Angela.
Rightfully so, I must add because Angela has that mature sensuality and playfulness that Tina Turner is famous for.
Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson also lobbied for the role of Dorothy Dandridge.

I agree. She was not soft enough to play Dororthy Dandrige.
She has been a favorite actress of mine since I first saw her in “Waiting to Exhale” and it crystallized in “Strange Days”.
I am going to reveal my comic book tendencies and say she was the fan pic for Storm of the X-Man before they went with a younger cast. Halle getting the role was a disappointment to a lot of fans as Angela was perfect. Like Gina Torres, she has a presense about her that is both strong and delicate.
I haven’t seen a lof of her movies but she has made a huge impact on me. I do think that if she were younger in Hollywood right now she would be like Mila J. from the Resident Evil series, just not so typecasted.

Angela Bassett is an determined and talented actress. I like her attitude and beauty, both inside and out. I’m glad she turned down demeaning roles such as Monsters’ Ball and ought not be criticized for doing so, for Hollyweird has long been hostile to beautiful and talented Black women for a very long time and still is today.

I haven’t seen “Monsters’ Ball”, but for some reason (Halle’s Oscar?) I thought it must be a decent film.
I know Oscars are joke (more or less), but it looks like something in me still expect them to mean something.
That year was the year of “black Oscars”. As if they wanted to sent the message- “here, we are not racists; see, we gave Oscars to black actors. Can we just move on now?”

Mira,
I completely agree with regarding “black Oscars” I thought the same thing.
I was very disappointed when Halle won the Oscar. And I hate to be disappointed about someone else’s good fortune, but I thought it was undeserved. I really hoped that Angela would have won one by now.

Why in the hell do people keep comparing Angela Bassett to Halle Berry?!?! They’re on two different sides of the coin! LOL.
It’s like comparing Zora Neale Hurston to Terry McMillan or Zane. It’s pointless because they had different intentions. Hurston was poigantly trying to transcribe her experiences and viewpoints in her literature. McMillan and Zane are far from populist. Same with the Bassett/Berry comparison. Let’s knock it off, now. LOL.
It never dawned me that Fatboy Slim sampled Angela’s voice on “Right Here, Right Now” but you know what, he sure did! LOL. Wow, as much as that track was played to death in the late ’90s and I’m just now realizing that!

i agree. why keep comparing halle and angela? in my opinion i think halle is a great actress but doesn’t get that recognition because hollywood focus more on her beauty than her acting skills. but i do love angela more and think she is one of the best actresses in hollywood and should get some credit for it. i say give halle some credit and leave this whole comparison alone.

You know how the media is: they don’t recognise greatness until it’s dead. Therefore, in spite of her tremendous talent, I’m not surprised she isn’t as famous as others (outside of black circles, that is).

I always found Vivica A Fox to be prettier…
I know no one will agree (obviously since no one talks about her at all). But I am not in the mood to argue or debate about who is prettier. I am just stating my opinion that I don’t find Angela Bassett to be as much as I hear people hype her up to be (oddly enough blacks hype her up as much as whites hype up Halle Berry).

I can only speak for myself. I think Angela is amazingly beautiful woman. On the other hand, I am a straight woman, so this doesn’t mean anything, I guess.
Angela is not famous as Halle, but (white) people know about her. At least white people around me. I never hear anybody compare them (apart from people on this site), but yes, from my experience, Angela is considered to be a more mature, more talented, serious actress. Not that people think Halle can’t act at all. But the problem is, the moment someone (especially woman) is praised mostly for her beauty, people tend to see her as less and less talented that she actually is. Also, her movie roles will become more and more simple, something to do without much effort, “pretty face” type of roles.
I must admit I know nothing about Vivica A Fox (must google a bit).

Angie has this “je ne sais quoi”, it’s not only about beauty
with her, I love the way she carries herself.
She’s the kind of woman who aspires to respect and someone to look at (stable love life, good choice of movies, educated, never caught in butt naked etc…)
Also being very talented makes look people sexier.
To me she’s the feminine version of Denzel.
And finally she’s ageing very well, I mean she’s in her 50s. I can’t still believe it!

Angela is amazing!! I do think she is an actress that is underrated and deserves much better roles and recognition. I think that Angela is very selective in her choice of roles. The bottom line is that Hollywood doesn’t make room for black actresses to grow and show their talent. The problem isn’t Angela or any other black actress, it is the Hollywood structure.
My top five most talented black actresses (in no particular order):
1. Cicely Tyson
2. Ruby Dee
3. Angela Bassett
4. Viola Davis
5. S. Epatha Merkerson
I know that black male actors don’t have it much easier; they still have to work very, very hard; however its even harder for the black female actors. However, Halle’s Oscar win didn’t change much and her own career seemed to have gone under after she won. That’s why I don’t really champion her win at all; it didn’t really change much for her or other black female talent.

Some spend a great deal of time arguing against popular conceptions that certain individuals are very beautiful. In these cases, the masses are usually correct and the targets of criticism really are gorgeous. This is true in Halle’s case. Pretty much everyone thinks she’s all that, which is why she has become such an international celebrity.

Both she and Halle Berry have two different skill sets. They attract different audiences. That is like comparing Glenn Close to Sarah Jessica Parker. No one serious really would compare these two white actresses because we know Glenn Close like Angela Basset are in a class of their own. So why are we doing this with Angela Basset and Halle Berry? The only reason people are comparing the two is because both identify as black Americans. You cannot compare the two.

If whites were one-eighth of the country and underrepresented in Hollywood and Sarah Jessica Parker won an Oscar but Glenn Close did not, they most certainly would be compared.

You hit the nail on the head. Hollywood absolutely has an ANTI-BW bias when it comes to providing talented Black actresses with the same type of quality roles, competetive pay, and necessary PR that it does for its NON-BLACK actresses (especially White actresses).

Oh lord let’s not talk about how hollywood underrepresents Black women. It offends many Black people when I bring it up. Especially after Mo’nique won that Golden Globe for her once again down trodden Black woman role. I want to see Black women and Black men get awarded for roles that are diverse. When I said most Blacks said I was whining and hating on Mo. Am I asking for too much? Do I have to shut up and be quiet and be glad White folks awarded a Black person? really? I even had a Black person tell me do White women feel stereotyped as being crazy after Charlize Theron’s role in “Monster”?. I said no because White women are not a marginalized racially and they have diverse images on television. My second question was “Are f’ing serious?” it felt odd telling a Black person that because I thought it was common sense to them lol oh well I guess not. I’m tired of playing good darkie, bad darkie with Black and White people.

Vivica is very plastic-looking now too. I remember seeing her and Lil’ Kim in a photo together with their collagen-filled lips and asking myself why a black person with naturally full lips would inject them with collagen. It’s not like she didn’t have lips before. It makes absolutely no sense.
Angela has a certain grace and elegance about her that will always trump the likes of women like Vivica. Vivica doesn’t have that inner beauty to me.

Vivica messed her self up badly. I saw it coming when I knews she got a nose job and was at the Source Awards. I knew then she was going to be an plastic surgery addict. Lil’Kim has a internalized racism. Talking about how Naturi who played her in the Biggie film was “too dark” Girl please Lil’Kim was not that damn light like she is now with all that make-up. Lil’kim presugery was very pretty.

Lil Kim looks a hot mess. She was out of line with the too dark comment. She should be glad a pretty girl like Naturi played her.

Dani,
Kim always had a color complex. She admitted to such as far back as 1997 in a profile for Vibe magazine. She said that she had a complex about her brown skin and “black girl” features because all of her boyfriends cheated on her with more “European-looking, long hair types” (her words). The blonde wigs, lightened skin and excessive plastic surgery is her way to achieve what she considers beauty. It’s sad because she really was an attractive girl back in the day. Now she looks like a plastic surgery victim.
Naturi played Kim to the tee in Notorious. Faith, Lil’ Cease and everyone else who knew Big even said so.
Since this post is about the beauty and talent of Angela Bassett, I say that her “Notorious” co-star Naturi, is headed on the same path of success. She got a raw deal with 3LW but she bounced back lovely.

I agree with this one too. I noticed that people who argue against Halle’s beauty are not arguing against the fact that she is beautiful but against the fact that she is the most beautiful. People have their own ideas and tastes on what is the most beautiful, but I would really have a hard time believing a person who thought Halle was ugly.
