The most beautiful Nigerian actresses

Here are the ten most beautiful Nigerian actresses that I know of.

As someone who lives in America who has not yet seen a Nollywood film, this is very much a work in progress! I am going by pictures and YouTube videos I have seen on the Internet.

1. Genevieve Nnaji (1979- ) – by far the best. I have read that she has bad skin and duck feet, but she is a beauty to me! Someone I might put in my top ten list of all black actresses. She is an Igbo from the Mbaise region in the south-east. In 2004 she was the face of Lux soap. More.

2. Omotola Jalade Ekeinde – also known as Omo Sexy. What a body!! Even after having four children. Toccara, step aside. She not only acts but sings and writes too. She is Yoruba. More.

3. Dakore Egbuson (1978- ) – what eyes! She is an Ijaw from the Niger Delta. She lives with her mother in Lagos. Her father is in New York. She sees herself as the meeting between Africa and the West. She did not truly understand herself till the time she lived in London: “When you see yourself in a sea of white people, you become more aware of whom you are.” More.

4. Georgina Onuoha – not as well-known as some of the others on this list, but I like how she looks!

5. Kate Henshaw-Nuttall – she is married to a British man.

6. Bimbo Akintola – unlike most of these women, she is from the south-west. She is Yoruba.

7. Rita Dominic (1975- ) – like Genevieve Nnaji, she is from Imo state in the south-east. Known for her silky skin.

8. Ini Edo (1982- ) – from Akwa Ibom on the south-eastern coast. She has been acting since she was a child. More.

9. Oge Okoye – born in London, she comes from Anambra state in the south-east. She has wanted to be an actress since she was a child. Her parents are devout Anglicans.

10. Stephanie Okereke – she went to the University of Calabar in the south-east. She came in second in 2002 in the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria that crowns Miss Nigeria. “Emotional Crack” made her name and won her two awards.

Most of these women are in Lagos acting in television soaps and in dozens of straight-to-video films that are seen across English-speaking Africa.

Most are from the south-east. I am not sure why. Maybe south-eastern women supply most of Nollywood’s female acting talent – maybe because they speak better English or are considered to be more beautiful. Or maybe it is just me: the south-east is next to Cameroon where I think the women are more beautiful still.

Before I did this post the only women I knew of from Nigeria were Genevieve Nnaji and the supermodels Oluchi and Agbani.

Compared to Hollywood actresses or even Nigerian supermodels most of these women are thick, having a much fuller figure.

I Love your list. These women are definately African standards of beauty because they are some of the most popualr actresses in Nigeria. Yes, Nigerians love the thickness(yay!). You’ve never watched a nollywood movie but I think you should give it a try. Don’t just watch anything because you will become dissapointed. There are a lot of gems but there far more duds.

omotola is yoruba. most of the pple u mentioned are from the south east (igbo) and south-south.

I’ve watched manyyyy Nigerian films on DVD, they were VERYYYYYY popular down here (in the Caribbean…well…the english speaking side) last year, and like someone suggested, don’t just watch any, trust me! I stopped watching them a long time and have not gone back to them since! Some are VERY good, some sucks and have ALOT of loud shouting, every minute they are shouting, I am sure i have watched a couple with G in them, if it’s who i think it is, she is gorgeous!!!! simply gorgeous, we are all black but I think we all have a “look” that states we are from certain countries and stuff, if you understand how I mean ..but anyways about the Nigerian films, alot of them two were….how to say it..was like deja vu, as in that you would watch one picture and others you watch have the same plot and everything, plus I hated them, LOL because they would make me cry, hahaha, some were really sad, these pictures in my opinion will make you feel very emotional, sadness, anger, happiness and stuff…. many got me angry alot, haha, the things they would do…the way they treated others in their family like step-children and stuff…very bad especially if you like someone they didn’t (the parent(s)) talk about the revenge time, plus a good set is mix up with christian and ….voodo/satanic themes, like ppl would work voodo and stuff to get rid of someone but sooner or later, he comes back at them worse. They are nice :). But I like how you have a thing going with black women and stuff, that’s great, actually came upon you my mistake researching some medical word, LOL and ended up on the black model section. I did agree with what someone said on that post about black ppl forming they own design companies and stuff but you know what would happen? remember that silly white girl from ANTM talking about BET?! yup, they would want to know why blacks are doing that and blah blah blah, they never see to get the obvious, they are always in the way of others.

I want to do a post on beautiful Cameroonian women, famous ones, but they are not as easy to find on the Internet Nigerian actresses who have their own film industry to push them. I know I am not being delusional about Cameroonian women because even the Nigerian actresses I like most are from the part of Nigeria that is next to Cameroon.

Maybe East Africans are better looking. I do not know enough about them to say.

And I think people say East Africans (Somalians and Ethiopians) are better looking because they have the whitest features (angular noses, thinner features, that kind of thing) East Africans are no doubt beautiful, but I think that it’s more about the kind of beauty that western society holds as being the most attractive. It’s also about preference. Take Iman and Liya Kebede and compare them to some of the Nigerian actresses or other African models to decide.

Then again, I’d rather not get into that whole who’s better looking than who type of argument, it’s just really nice of you they way you appreciate black beauty from all around the globe: Africa, Brazil, and America

It’s interesting how some of these women are referred to as typical African beauties, yet they are as thin as tooth-picks. Since when was a size 0 woman with a flat chest and without curves considered to be a true representation of African beauty? Come on! They are not ugly, but to say that Okereke and Genevieve are true African beauties is a slap in the face. Curves are what make an African woman stand out from the rest, no matter her skin tone. Seems east Africans Somalia /Ethiopians are insecure. You only have to post images of black women on a site and one of them comes along to tell you that they have the most beautiful women. Invariably someone responds with the ignorant assertion that its because they have European features as if having European features, whatever that means, automatically makes you better looking than others who supposedly don’t have European features. Well the fact is, I am in Europe where European features abound and there are many dogs here. No one can honestly say all white women are better looking than all black women nor is the reverse the case. The truth is that people compare one “look” against another “look” and make a choice informed by personal prejudices. Some might argue that there are such things as universal ideals of beauty, indeed some scientist have postulated the idea of symmetrical features being recognised worldwide as more beautiful than asymmetrical once, but when it comes down to it, with over 500 ethnic groups. Nigeria has most of the looks anyone could want. Certainly, there are tribes and peoples in Nigeria with those features of which Ethiopians and Somalis are so proud and I don’t mean Fulani. When scientist talk of symmetrical features as being universally recognised as beautiful, they do not mean aquiline features, but that both side of the face most be evenly matched.

Nigerian films are knocked up by Independents. Perceptions of the movie and music industry in Nigeria is evolving, people are not as scornful as before but the majority of Nigerians still see education as more respectable. When and if Nigerian filmmaking matures and attains a higher profile in the country, new breeds of actresses and actors will come along that will blow away the current crop in terms of attractiveness and acting ability.

Your wonder on why most of the actress that you have compiled as the Most Beautiful Girls in Nigeria can be simply explaied the filmmaking scene in Nigeria that has come to be known as Nollywood is virtually controlled and almost entirely dominated by Igbos, third largest group of peoples mostly found in south-east Nigeria.

Northern Nigeria, which consists of Hausa and Fulanis, largest group of Nigerian peoples, is mostly Muslim and somewhat backward yet concentrate on supplying the dominant political class of Nigeria.

Yorubas, second largest group of people marginally ahead of Igbos, of south-west Nigeria, mostly are into academia. In fact, one now prominent Nigerian Yoruba actor and now award-winning film director – his short film won the Toronto Prize for film last year – based in South Africa Okin Omotoso, whose work so far has absolutely nothing to do with Nigeria – his two extent film deal with South African subjects and his TV drama is, of course, entirely, reckons that there is no such thing as a film industry in his country. His aesthetics and education, he holds a bachelor degree in literature and arts and comes from backgroumd of academic persons – his father is the long-tenured professor here in a South African university, do not permit to regard Nollywood as filmmaking and may be partly unreasonable shame at what he regards the poor workmanship of what is known as Nollywood with its utterly non-existent aesthetic concerns and basic filmmamking techniques.

The reason why the film industry is Nigeria is dominated by Igbos is by virtue of the evidently widespread phenomenon of their entreprenearial spirit and flair – they’re by far themost entrepreneuerial groupd of people not only in Nigeria but right across West Africa where they can be found selling anythig and evreything in the countries in which as a people they are not to be found – Igbos are originally found only in Nigeria. The Nigerian film industry almost entirly belongs to them.

Complicating the issue dominant tribal affiliation is, of course, the tribal issue that dominates to more or less extent other African society, most intensely Nigeria, Cameroon, Rwanda & Burundi in central Africa and Kenya in east Africa. The internercine tribal conflict is most intensely found in these socities, though it afflicts to a lesser all African society but it is not as bloody and intensely schism as it is in the countries cited above.

I hope this will somehow clarify your wondering aloud on the domination of south-east Nigerian beauties inyour list: it’s not that they are particularly beautiful above everyone elsem it is beacuse of the constituency of the film industry.

Contrary to hype about Nollywood being watched in English-speaking Africa, that is not true: Nollywood is obvioulsy only popular in Nigeria. For instance in my country South Africa it only arrived owing to a presence of small Nigerian community here (plus 150 000 according to the last Census 2001). Still it’s not popular confined as it is to people with adventurous, some might say undiscriminating, tastes.

For a film literate audience such as South African society – South Africa is virtually the only country on the continent with film theatres of world class standards (four of South African cinemas are within the world’s top twenty biggest cinema-theatres, two of which are in the top ten) – it is a hard-sell to ask them to watch Nollywood films which, to put it mildly, are quite illiterate in every sense of the word (in film technique and aethetic). The small kioks that keep and retail Nollywood DVDs in the country are all naturally run by Nigerians and cater spescifically for suhc ethnic tastes; they by no means selling Nollywood DVDs to the general society.

Cinemas that are being built in much of African countries such as Nigeria herself and Zambia are being unddertaken by the South African media company Primedia with its brand Ster-kinekor. This explains why when film when developed in Nigeria went straight to VHS and now to DVD – it’s because of a lack of a theatres and a cinema-going public. Digital satelliet TV, owned by a South African media company, the biggest media group in Africa and part of Forbes 2000 World Companies named Naspers through its electronic media brand Multichoice, and based in South Africa has a dedicated channel on the biouquet now for Nollywood. But there are only about 650 000 subscribers to DS TV in the rest of Africa outsode of South Africa which now has clsoe to 2 million subscribers – these figurss can be verified from the Napsers’ most recent Annual Report 2008/09 available on the conglomerate’s website. From the verifiable figures of African subscribers, most of them said to be based in Nigeria, it can be seen that nobody outside of Nigeria watches this channel. The numbers of persons that may watch the Nollywood channel outside of Nigeria on DS TV would be statistically insignificant. It is marketing hype to say that Nollywood is popular across Africa, but certainly not reality.

I got to know the film actresses you list above by my virtue f being within the media industry: South African society has never heard of or know even the names of these film actresses. And, despite Nollywood’s reputedly large revenue, though unconfirmed, Nigeria’s film industry is quite rudimentary by South African standards. Though South African film industry hardly breaks-even, which is not out of keeping with world film trends – 6 out of seven films made in he world are commercial flops, that is, failing to even recoup the production monies taht made them – but the industry dates as far back as 1910, right up there with US in making some of the world’s first films.

You can then pretty imagine the degree of film literacy coupled with the fact that most Hollywood important features are shown in he country three months after the dates of their US releases, which is standard for a foreign films in most countries, inclduing the UK. US stars such as Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Tyrese, etc., have all starred in big-budget South African black-made films (that is by black filmmakers) in the country as far back as 1988. In terms of media consumption South Africa is the only other country yet to have Oprah Winfrey’s own version of O The Oprah Magazine, which is well within the top five best-selling black-aimed magazines in the country – at the height of its launch it was withinthe top three, however, in accordance with worldwide trends, it lost some readersship and circulation on the year ending in February 2009. That shows the level of media consumption in South Africa compared to the rest of Africa that Oprah, who could have easily chosen even the Philipines or Singapore where she has quite huge followings as well to launch her first non-US media product she chose South Africa.

Frankly, the ladies mentioned are beautiful, but I would rather more robust ones. I am an African, born in Jamaica and residing in Canada. Traditionally, Jamaican men do adore fat ladies. My father, for instance, is not a big man but my mother was round and pretty and my father adored her.

I intend to visit Nigeria in 2010 and I do hope to meet a wonderful, well-rounded lady for traditional marriage in the future.

Even so, we should congratulate our Nigeria sister who have been bring up wonder aspects of life in the Motherland.

No offense to Nigerians on this board but I have never heard of Nollywood, it can’t be that big an industry.
Am sure these actresses are beautiful but they don’t begin to compare to South African actresses! If that is the top most beautiful that country has to offer then…I don’t know what to say:(

What you have to understand is that these pictures don’t do these ladies any justice. If you watch them in the movies they are so beautiful. There are not a lot of great pictures of nollwyood celebrities online. No offense to
abagond because he tried his best but the photos he chose are not great. And another thing is that he is also going by popularity because there are very beautiful nollywood actresses that are not that famous.

Gen is the best of all, she is natural oh my black shine. She doesn`t overdo her makeup, I mean she is so simple but hot. Omo is hot too but I think she is trying to bleach her skin coz in some movies she looks like some one who uses strong creams. Black women come in all sizes and shapes. Some are curvy, some are not. NOT ALL BLACKS LOOK LIKE. If that’s the case, I guess greeks aren’t really white because most of them don’t have straight blond with blue eyes. Having a huge donkey ass doesn’t make you beautiful either. Most AA are “thick” because poor diet and little to no exercise. I think it’s sad, for people to think being fat or thick is what ALL black women should look like. Agabond, I really wish that you would put out more articles about East African culure and people. It would nice if you would show Blacks going outside the box of “Black culture”. All in all, in the contemporary present-day world, the long slim-necked, broad-shouldered, slim-waist, long-legged, curvy, willowy, elegant tall Stephanie Okereke, in all sincerity, typifies, exemplifies or epitomizes physical beauty, so also are such beauties as Chiege Alisigwe, sexy beautiful open-teeth Ufuoma Ejenobor, and the long slender neck on a broad-shouldered dynamite, ever so palatable Yvonne Nelson, from Ghana.

Wow. I know you’re just speculating, but this is a bit a highly presumptuous – It’s almost like stereotyping an entire region!

No, southern Nigerians don’t “speak better English” any more than northern Nigerians would. It’s also not about beauty- Beauty is relative everywhere you are.

You simply don’t see as much Northern Nigerians as actresses for the same reason you don’t see Bedouin or Arab women on TV- The north is more conservative, so If you see women on TV, they’re more likely to be reporters and journalists rather than actresses (See Elizabeth Banu). Additionally, the hub of Nollywood is in the South so it’s much more easier for women in that area to become famous.

I know you’re not an expert but I just had to clear this one out- pls be careful not to generalize a whole region 🙂

I just knew Genevieve Nnaji was Igbo. I never knew that she did any acting in Nollywood movies. Anyways, this music video is the best I’ve ever seen her.

My mind is messing with me. I did know she was a Nollywood actress. I momentarily got her confused with Agbani Darego, Nigeria’s 2002 Miss World winner. I was thinking Nnaji went model to actress while confusing her for Darego.

Lol I guess they were easy for me to confuse seeing as how they are both on my mental list of sexy Naija chicks

The reason that you only have south-eastern women (mostly Ibo) on this list is not because they’re more beautiful that south-western women (mostly Yoruba). The only people likely to consider this to be the case are Igbos themselves. Interestingly enough – Igbos tend to mostly be the ones producing these English movies. These movies are probably the ones that you are exposed to most often isn’t it? Because you don’t speak Yoruba do you? You could kind of consider the situation similar to that of this country – where mostly-white-owned Hollywood produces movies that appeal to white people. Somehow these movies find their way around the world and all of a sudden you have to look a certain way or be of a certain culture before you are considered beautiful. Igbo women aren’t more talented than Yoruba women. They aren’t more beautiful either. It is simply that they are the only ones you are largely exposed to.

I’m sorry if this was vitriolic by the way – I didn’t mean for it to be.

The way i see it, you just took all the Nigerian female actors and compliled the list.
Frankly speaking Nigerian women are not beuatiful. they are built with a mans image.
So i guess i would say there is no beautiful female actor. unless of course if you are comparing to themselves then we can select some one who is not beuatiful, but who looks better tan the rest.
