Lela Rochon (1964- ) is an American actress from Los Angeles who is best known as one of the four main characters in the film “Waiting to Exhale” (1995). She also made small but unforgettable appearances with Eddie Murphy in “Harlem Nights” (1989) and “Boomerang” (1992).
In 1996 People magazine named her as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.
This blog lists her as the seventh most beautiful black woman in the world. She is tall (5 foot 9 or 1.75 metres) with an hourglass figure: her measurements are 34C 23 36 (86 58 91 cm). Her face is more pretty than drop-dead beautiful, but still I could look at her for ever! Even now when she is in her 40s and has grown fatter.
She first caught my eye when she was just 19: she was that girl dancing with Lionel Richie in his music video “All Night Long” (1983). Soon after that she appeared in 20 ads for Bud Light beer as one of the beauties who hung out with the dog Spuds MacKenzie.
For the next nine years she got small parts in film and television.
In “Harlem Night” she was the prostitute Sunshine who made Eddie Murphy want to leave his wife.
Murphy ran into her again in “Boomerang”: she looked great dressed in white walking her white dog in the park. But later on, after getting with her, he found out what ugly feet she had and fled in terror.
In 1995 she got steady work as an actress for the first time. She was Shawn Wayans’s girlfriend in the television show “The Wayans Bros.”
When she read the book “Waiting to Exhale” by Terry McMillan she knew she was meant to play the character Robin Stokes. But when she tried out for the film they told her no. She did not give up: she knew someone who knew Terry McMillan. McMillan got her to see the director and he gave her the part.
After “Waiting to Exhale” she was able to get better parts in films, but none of them were hits like “Exhale”:
- 1996: “Mr and Mrs Loving” as Mrs Loving
- 1998: “Ruby Bridges” as Ruby’s mother. She was beautiful!
- 1998: “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” as one of three wives of singer Frankie Lymon. Halle Berry and Vivica Fox were the other two.
- 1999: “Any Given Sunday” as Jaime Foxx’s girlfriend
In the late 1990s she would have made most people’s list as one of the top ten black actresses in Hollywood. But even so she was not in the same league with Halle Berry or Angela Bassett.
In 1999 she was 35. Time was running out if she wanted to have a family. That year she married Antoine Fuqua, best known as the director of “Training Day” (2001).
Since then she has spent most of her time having a family and bringing up their three children. She was on the television show “The Division” for a season and has appeared in three films.

Did you fact check this at all? She was trying to get one of the rival mob bosses to pick up and her heroine up to do a switch….not Eddie.

Do your homework & get your facts straight. I was not Eddie Murphy that want to leave his wife. It was a white man that picked up numbers for Bugsy the gangster.
