February is Black History Month in the US and on this blog.
I need to get back to the practice of doing history months, where I try to write five to ten posts on the past and present of a particular continent and its diaspora, especially its diaspora in the US (where I live).
I never wind up doing as many posts as I would like, and that is frustrating and disappointing, but I do wind up doing more posts on the subject than I would otherwise – at least for the non-Black months.

Speaking of March, I’d like to recommend giving a nod to Women’s History Month. I’m not suggesting to add another full heritage month to the already ambitious schedule you’ve laid out here, but just one post about Black women’s history. Maybe also give a similar nod to Pride month.

I hope that any article you write on South Africa and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe will take into account both sides of the story.
You can’t truly understand apartheid without understanding the Boer War, and how the trauma of losing 1/5 of their population in British concentration camps led the Boers to be very untrustworthy of outsiders. Apartheid was really about making sure the Boers had a country to call their own, that after trekking and fighting for their independence, they wouldn’t become a stateless minority group.
That said, some actions were committed by the apartheid government that went too far, and the apartheid government should have ceded more land to the Bantu tribes to build actually viable nations on (as opposed to the gerrymandered exclaves that couldn’t support themselves that were created).
In the case of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, don’t forget that Ian Smith’s goal was always a reasonably paced transition to multiracial rule, not eternal white rule. Also please remember that he lost an eye fighting against fascism in WWII, and that he was never corrupt or ostentatious like Mugabe was.

And you can’t deny that the society built by the Boers was on a higher level of cultural and technological sophistication than anything the Bantus ever did. The fact is, Bantus never developed any high culture.
Most of the ancestry of Boers is not from the Netherlands, actually. It’s like telling White Americans to go back to England.
Land belongs rightfully to the first people to build a civilization on it, not to whatever tribesmen occupied it first. Blacks had the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, Whites even gave up Rhodesia and Namibia. Demanding South Africa as well was pure greed.

This is your opinion. It is not international law.
I honestly didn’t expect to see you back here again after you failed to respond to the last few comments on the Pilgrims thread. Your idol Kruger was far less educated than people like Nelson Mandela, Patrice Lumumba, and Ho Chi Minh — the ones you characterize as illiterate primitive tribesmen. Kruger certainly wasn’t smart enough to come up with any new innovations or advances in civilization on his own. He couldn’t hold a candle to a mind like Gandhi’s.

Kruger lived in a different century. The proper comparison to Kruger is Dingaan, a treacherous, illiterate murderer.
The proper comparison to Mandela is Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd. Dr. Verwoerd had many degrees and spoke multiple languages at a native level, with no foreign accent.
Dr. Verwoerd was the White MLK – both men had doctorates (although MLK plagiarized much of his thesis), and both men were murdered in the 1960s for defending their race.
Gandhi was a profoundly creepy man who slept naked with his teenage niece in his 70s.
Even if that wasn’t the case, why would any self-respecting Westerner like those who fought against Western interests?

Having done some research online, it appears that the following statement is false:

The Bantus and the Khoisan both practiced communal land ownership, which is different from what you’re accustomed to (i.e., individual title), but which is still a valid type of land tenure with set rules and penalties for breaking those rules. Strangers are not allowed to use this land without being granted permission, and the community will defend the land from encroachment by outsiders. Various types of use (e.g., fishing, hunting, agriculture) of the same tract of land may be extended to different individuals/families, or all uses of the tract may fall under the purview of one individual/family, depending on the land tenure rules of the community. This is definitely more complex than the territorial behavior instinctual to elephants and zebras.

Land (territory) belongs to the humans and other species who inhabit that land. Particularly those societies who are indigenous to that land or territory.
Building a European
“civilization”colony on said land/territory is wholly irrelevant.Just because you refuse to acknowledge the beauty and sophistication of the indigenous cultures of Southern Africa (or anywhere outside of Europe) doesn’t negate their beauty and sophistication. Not to mention their ingenuity or humanity.

You can’t lump all non-Whites together. Confucius doesn’t give Bantu tribesmen any moral right to land. Boers were an early modern society, Bantus a Stone Age or maybe Bronze Age society. Bantus never created anything worthwhile in the fields of art, culture, science, or philosophy prior to European contact. Even now, they’ve created very little.
The Vietnamese had favorable terrain, and unlike Bantus, they actually had a civilizational history.
But Vietnam doesn’t make me sad the way Rhodesia, Algeria, or South Africa did. Why? Because there was never a major Western settler population in Vietnam. If I were the American president in the 60s, I would have come to the defense of Rhodesia and French Algeria instead of Vietnam.

You haven’t specified what those interests are. Unless you’re saying Western interests are limited to getting rich and powerful, not anything more.

Again, this is your opinion, and it’s an uninformed one that tells me you’ve never studied anthropology or world history in any depth.
But you have to at least admit that it’s more complex and civilized than the territorial instincts of elephants and zebras.
Which brings me to this question:
Why do you think it’s acceptable to come to a blog written by a Black American on topics concerning Black people, with a readership that is primarily Black including some commenters in Africa (at least one of whom identifies as Bantu), and liken Black Africans to elephants and zebras? Why do you think it’s okay to come to this Black space and describe Blacks as primitive, wild, illiterate, and ignorant? Is that civilized behavior on your part? Because it seems rude and uncouth to me.

When I was around 9 years old, I sat down with one of my mother’s sociology textbooks to see if I could learn a few more words that day.
I turned to a page where the author had a table that compared “civilized” societies with “non-civilized” societies.
The “civilized” side included: the written word, the wheel, metal working and agriculture among other attributes.
The “non-civilized” side included: verbal communications with no written word, stone tools, no wheels or beasts of burden and hunting and gathering.
Even at that tender age, I understood the author (a White male academic) was describing European society as “civilized” and other societies as “uncivilized” in varying degrees.
I also understood that his definition of “civilized” was flawed and far too narrow. His definition was based solely on mechanical technology.
Left unmentioned were attributes I associated (then and now) with the word “civilized”. Behaviors and modes of thinking that centered around how people treated each other. How they treated the land around them. How they viewed their place in the scheme of things. How they viewed the Divine.
At 9 years old, I didn’t have the vocabulary to describe those concepts of “civilized” that rested on behaviors and modes of thinking. Yet, I knew technology alone was not an indicator of “civilized” or “civilization”.
Plus, even at 9 years old, through my reading, I was able to think of two exceptions to that author’s definition of “civilized”:
◉ The Aztecs and Maya never developed the wheel, yet had remarkable technical cultures and social sophistication beyond anything in Europe at the time.
◉ The Aboriginal people of Australia fit the author’s view of uncivilized, yet had highly developed social and spiritual cultures that made European culture look like a barbaric backwater.
I had already begun to question the use of words like, “the world” or “international” to describe things that only happened in the USA or Europe. I knew at 9 years old the world include many more people than just Europeans or Americans.
The word “primitive” seemed yet another way to elevate European technical culture over other cultures. “Primitive” started sounding phony and nonsensical to me even then.
What I’ve realized since adulthood is that those classifications and labels are a way for “ethnic Westerners and Western nations” to justify theft, murder, rape and torture of the rest of humanity.
They tell themselves (and anyone else who will listen) those myths to feel good about themselves. Simple ego elevation.
Then there is the profit motive.
In 1975 acclaimed author, the late Toni Morrison dissected White supremacists motives in a speech. She explained why racist myths continue to swirl around the cultures of “ethnic Westerners and Western nations”.

So I’ve been reading up on Hendrik Verwoerd, the guy Paul Kruger called the White MLK. Verwoerd is known in South Africa as “the architect of apartheid.” He was a Nazi sympathizer who vocally opposed the admission into South Africa of Jewish refugees fleeing Germany and who published Nazi propaganda during WW2, when South Africa was on the Allied side.
And get this, he was born in the Netherlands. He was a first-generation immigrant who could have gone back home any time.

In Islamic philosophy, the type of arguments put forward by Paul are called “Devil’s logic” = an arbitrary criteria of “superiority” is chosen upon which to base justifications for unfair entitlements.
The opposite of devils logic would be arguments based on the starting premise that all humanity is of equivalent value….that we are “family”. (Unity/Tawheed)
So, according to Devils logic–if–P has siblings…but P decides that he is “superior” because he went to college and his siblings did not…therefore he was entitled to everything his siblings possessed….and any harm done by him to his siblings was therefore justified.
That is how one loses one’s humanity and turns into monsters…..
the opposite (Unity) would be…
P is poor and has an intellectually disabled sibling…P goes through much trials and hurdles to finish college…he then responsibly uses his education/privilege to better the personal and social environment for his sibling as well as for others less privileged so that they too may have benefits.
That is how one becomes more humane…..and builds happier societies/nations…
Apartheid (and colonialism) is a system based on devils logic.
Therefore it will never contribute to the human family.

Being indigenous means nothing if your culture is primitive. As Winston Churchill said, “I do not agree that the dog in a manger has the final right to the manger even though he may have lain there for a very long time.”
Bantu cultures had no beauty or sophistication. They were primitive. I don’t care about “humanity”. I am an ethnic Westerner first, second, and third, a man fourth, a citizen of my state fifth, and a human last.
I fully acknowledge some non-Western cultures are beautiful and sophisticated, for example Japan. The only civilizations of note Africa ever had were Egypt and Carthage (descended from pre-Islamic Middle Easterners), French Algeria, Rhodesia, and the Boer/Afrikaner civilizations (descended from Europeans).
You have no right to enter my home since you are no more sophisticated than me. What percentage of your ancestors were literate in 1700 or even 1800?
If you were genuinely more civilized and technologically advanced than my people, it would be my right. And in fact, the Boers were way nicer than they could have been. After all, Bantus are now 80% of South Africa, whereas Amerindians are only 1% of the USA. And look where our kindness got us. Bantus are far more anti-White than Amerindians these days…
Biko was a radical militant who was a threat to the stability of the state. As Les Miserables says, “death to each and every traitor!” And the number of prisoners killed by the Afrikaner government pales in comparison to the number of German civilians killed by allied bombings and “expulsions” (brutal, murderous ethnic cleansing), or even the number of black Africans killed by black African governments. If the United States government had taken a more aggressive approach to subduing the BLM movement, it wouldn’t be wreaking so much havoc…
Sandra Laing was clearly the result of an affair. And yes, most Afrikaners are about 5% non-White genetically, a mix of Khoisan, West African, East African, South Asian, Indonesian, and a little East Asian. There is no Bantu blood in them, since Bantus were not in the Western Cape during the Dutch Cape Colony days, and by the time the Afrikaners encountered Bantus, there was a strong taboo against having “relations” with native tribes.

Did you even read the quote you posted? Smith believed in multiracial rule, as he clearly says in the quote.
Mugabe and Nkomo were murderous tear-o-wrists (intentionally misspelled to avoid my comment not showing up) who shot down airplanes full of innocent civilians. And the country Mugabe created proves Smith right.

Ethnic Westerners is another word for indigenous Europeans and their diaspora. Western interests means keeping uitlanders (members of foreign ethnic groups) out of our lands, increasing our wealth, and acquiring new lands to settle.
As for elephants and zebras, they may be slightly less sophisticated than Bantus in terms of land ownership, but they never destroyed a Western nation, so I have no problem with them.
I can ask you a similar question: why do Africans (and Muslims) think it’s acceptable to migrate to Western nations en masse? Smith was a modest and decent man who drove his own car without a massive entourage of hangers-on and security guards. Mugabe used his power to enrich his family and friends, Smith didn’t. Smith fought against Mussolini in WWII, Mugabe didn’t. Smiths grandparents were all literate, none of Mugabe’s were.
So even if I accept your characterization of Smith as a “dumb white jock” and Mugabe as a “subtle and sharp black intellectual”, the “dumb jock” did a much better job of ruling the country.

No, it means I was trying to figure out which word in my comment tripped the wire. There’s a list of moderated words in the comment policy, but it doesn’t contain every single moderated word. You may note for yourself that there are already anti-White racial slurs on that list. If someone in the past had frequently used Boer as a racial slur, the word could have ended up being moderated.

Under the ‘terrible’ Mugabe the number of secondary education pupils in 2013 was 19.2 times what it was under the very modest Ian Smith and 3.19 times the white population you claim was displaced. As for land theft, your 300,000 whites stole the land from blacks as well as their labor power at gunpoint.

I have read the comment policy. That’s why I write “tear-o-wrists” or “tear-a-wrists”. I didn’t realize Zimbabwe has been removed from the list. I will stop writing Zimbebwabwabwe now, even though it cracks me up. I love laughing at primitive names and cultures, but that’s off topic.
Rhodesia is a much better name from an aesthetic standpoint. It looks more like a country name, for one thing (think Indonesia or any of the other countries that end in -a or -ia). It’s more civilized-sounding as well.
How could anyone think that calling someone a Boer is an insult? Boers represented one of the greatest manifestations of the human spirit.
The British won the war but ultimately lost the peace. In 1907, the former Boer Republics had Afrikaner Prime Ministers, in 1910, South African became a self-governing dominion with an Afrikaner PM, in 1948, a legal system to protect Afrikaners was put in place, in 1961, the Afrikaners ditched the British monarchy and South Africa was fully independent.
And the British and Afrikaners are equals from a civilizational standpoint. It’s not humiliating to be beaten by your equals the way it is to be beaten by your inferiors. And the only reason Rhodesia was beaten is because it was the sacrificial lamb. Other Western countries sacrificed it to appease liberal blacktivists.
Let others rise to take Smith’s place until the West is free!

It’s amazing that you could write those two statements back-to-back in all seriousness. Are those children not part of the volk? Dickens makes it very clear that profit was put ahead of the children’s well-being. In real life, those children were paid so little that most were still hungry, dirty, ill-clothed, and ill-housed or homeless. Many also ended up dying young or being crippled for life from industrial toxins or damage caused by the machines (not just in accidents, but deformations from the effects of repetitive labor on growing bodies).
The whole point of child labor was putting profit first. Children could be paid far less than adults and were easier to exploit.

I’m quite aware of that theory — and also very aware that many creators would disagree and would take issue with interpretations too far off the mark. For instance, Charles Manson had his own interpretation of the Beatles’ White Album, particularly “Helter Skelter.” The Beatles are absolutely correct in objecting to and rejecting that interpretation. The creators should always have the final say over what their own work means, especially when someone misinterprets it to nefarious ends.
And while I guess it’s good you have at least a passing acquaintance with Oliver Twist, it doesn’t compare to having read historical nonfiction — hard facts and numbers — pertaining to child labor during the industrial revolution. The discussion we are following at this thread can convey falsely the impression that South Africa is a lost society, a basket case of a country engulfed in a permanent tribal or racial crisis.
The country has its problems for sure but is far from a war-zone. Do they, though? There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Black people, especially Black males, are more likely to be arrested and imprisoned than Whites for the same type of crimes. Dude, I like punk rock. I’ve got comments on other posts at this blog attesting to that fact. It doesn’t change the reality that punk rock was all about simplifying and de-sophisticating the sound. The punk rock ethos was all you need to know is three chords … or maybe two, or just one… and it doesn’t matter if you’re out of tune half the time, or you’ve only been playing the guitar for six weeks. Just get up on stage and play, and if no one likes it, screw ’em! It is the antithesis of sophisticated complex rock, a big middle finger to the innovations of the late 1960s. And grunge arose directly out of the punk scene; it was originally considered a sub-genre of punk.
If you think African drumming isn’t complex, you’ve never paid attention. If only B.R. still posted here, he would have a field day with this one! (FYI, B.R. is a White professional musician who has made an extensive study of African and Afro-Brazilian music.)

I have a learning difference/disability called dyscalculia. I also have a high IQ and a college degree just like you do. In graduate school, I had a position teaching academic courses for first- and second-year undergrads. I’ve also worked one-on-one with college students dealing with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Having a learning disability doesn’t mean someone is stupid.

—b) because the measure (test) for intelligence is arbitrary. If the premise starts with the assumption that all human intelligence is of equivalent value (and benefit) in all its diversity–then testing/measuring only a particular type of intelligence and then claiming it as “superior” is false and arbitrary.

Do you remember a few years ago MJB posted about a group called Redneck Revolt/John Brown Gun Club? Your most recent comment reminded me of them and I went to look at their web page. It appears that lately they are taking inspiration from Fred Hampton. Since the start of the pandemic they have begun doing things like mobile soup kitchens, free contactless grocery delivery for people who can’t afford the typical fees, free clinics for changing brake lights and headlights, clothing drives, etc.
I don’t know if there are any other progressive groups coming out of the White underclass and doing outreach to that community instead of giving them up to the Radical Right-wing. But there needs to be. They were the backbone and the sinews of the Progressive Movement of the last century.

We have to remember the Progessive Movement of the early 20th century had several engaged sectors: organized labor, farmers and suffragists pressing for the vote. They struggled for decades to make change happen.
Some contemporary White progressives identify as Antifa. The Radical Rightwing loathes Antifa as much as they loathe Black people. Perhaps more. Remember how hysterical Trump became over the nightly protests in Portland, OR during 2020?
I saw some of the same Establishment hysteria over Antifa in Seattle. There is a strong organized sector of working class White people in Seattle who do service outreach. This has earned them a lot of sympathizers.
I also personally know some “middle of road” White people in Seattle who support a Socialist city council member. The local business Establishment tried three times to boot her from the city council, but failed because of her support from young working class White people who benefit from her citywide tenant and employee protection initiatives.
Divide and rule has been a successful strategy for wealthy, White heterosexual, Christian men since Colonial times. Anytime an individual or group tries to erode social divisions and build coalitions across ethnic lines they are met with violence.
Fred Hampton’s coalition building with working class White groups, Latinx (Puerto Rican and Chicano) groups and resurgent Native American groups scared the heck out of The Establishment and led to his assassination.

It may use “words” (in its declarations and documents) to pretend otherwise—but intentions and actions show the real landscape (the system)…..
Such an ideology gives unearned rights and privilege’s to one (elite) group of people which makes them have more wealth/power and consequently keeps them above the law/justice.

power = political system
law/justice=judicial system/laws/rights
….unless all 3 are critiqued and interrogated….one cannot get a full picture of the “system” because all 3 elements work together to create “The System”.

It’s interesting to see the similarities between developments that took place in USA, South Africa and maybe other parts of the world where a population of European origin (mainly British) cohabited with populations of other races (Black, Amerindians, etc) at similar periods (for examples the end of the 19th century and begin of the 20th)
Regarding South Africa, I would like to call your attention to the so called Rand rebellion, where the upper working class of Whites reacted violently to the possibility of promotion of Black labor in the mines. The uprising were smashed in a bloody way by the capitalist state.
A curious relic of that period, that followed the Bolshevik revolution in Russia a few years before, was the motto chanted by the White working class, “Workers of the world, unite and fight for a white South Africa!”.
The White working class, at that time, saw itself and its destiny as to guarantee a place at the table of the ruling elite and a total obstruction of any attempt to include people of other races.
That spirit translated later in the ideology and political-social system of Apartheid in South Africa.
Let’s add that attempts to evict workers of Asian descent, that happened in the USA, also happened in South Africa at the same time. The similarities in historical processes are striking.

One of the things I like about Redneck Revolt is that it’s actively anti-racist. Their firearms workshops and shooting range days are specifically designed for Blacks and other POC. (And they also try to make it a comfortable place for women and the LGBTQ community.) The car clinics are open to anyone but are specifically targeted to the Black community with the goal of reducing their chances of being pulled over by the cops for a burnt-out light. Their booths at gun shows are not just for outreach to Whites but also to provide a welcoming space for POC.

Woodrow Wilson’s administration did pass Progressive reforms like outlawing child labor, mandating an 8 hour workday for railroad workers and antitrust legislation to reduce corporate collusion and corruption.
Woodrow Wilson was also a Democrat in 1912. At that time the Democrats were reactionary White Supremacists who carried water for corporate interests in the same same way Republicans do now.
The Republicans were still the Party of Lincoln. A lot of Black people who were able to vote, voted Republican. That doesn’t mean the Republicans loved them back. The Republicans pimped Black people for votes the same way Democrats do in these times.
Democrats of that era used a great deal of lies, innuendo, overheated rhetoric and physical violence to suppress Black political participation. That was especially true of Southern Democrats.
In North Carolina, the Democrats launched a bloody coup in 1898 against Black and White politicians in Wilmington, who were members of the Populist party.
