The University of Minnesota blackface video (2011) was a five-minute video made by two White American students at the Duluth campus (UMD): Rachel Cooper and Jessica Heid. They made it one night in 2011 in the middle of getting a facial when their faces were dark brown for 12 minutes. The video went viral in November 2012 on the UMDHate YouTube account.
They said stuff like:
- “I’m from the 612, bitch. Nigga, I beez from Brooklyn, New York!”
- “I got some big ol’ lips, some white fuckin’ teeth.”
- “We are true Negroes, man. We come from the black hood.”
- “We need some fuckin’ fried chicken.”
- “You fuck with me I got a whole gang behind me ready to beat yo’ ass.”
- “We got the fuckin’ gang-bang niggas from the nigga niggas.”
- “We kind of look like apes right now.” “Planet of the Apes” “Planet of the Negroes”
- “Bitch, you know I have a gun in my pocket.”
- “Rosa Parks is our bitch, she’s our homegirl.”
- “You fuckin’ slaved our asses, we’re gonna fuckin’ slave your asses.”
They used nigga at least 13 times, cracka 7 times.
They were laughing so hard one of them fell out of her chair.
After it went viral:
- UMD said they “abhor” the video but would not say who did it or how they would be punished.
- YouTube removed the video as hate speech.
- Cooper and Heid did not apologize till Huffington Post was about to out them.
In 2010 at UMD two white students on Facebook publicly called a black student a racial slur and said they felt “unsafe” and “dirty” in her presence.
UMD said it was “deeply saddened” but would not say who did it or how they would be punished.
The black student who outed the Facebookers said:
I have known about several incidents that have happened here on campus at UMD, and the school always tries to push it under the rug, and I refused to let this one go.
In January 2012 UMD joined the anti-racist Unfair Campaign. Tim Wise spoke in February. Ads, Posters and billboards informed Duluth about white privilege:
- “It’s hard to see racism when you’re white.”
- “Racism: Ignore it and it won’t go away.”
- “We are privileged because society was set up for us and our silence keeps it in place.”
- “We’re privileged and that’s unfair.”
In July 2012 UMD said the campaign was “divisive” and pulled out.
In October 2012 in Duluth someone lynched President Obama in effigy from a highway billboard. The police laughed and took it down.
In 1920 whites in Duluth lynched three black circus workers for raping at gunpoint and leaving her for dead. Her doctor said she was not raped or even beaten. No gun was found.
No one was ever punished for the murders.
White Northerners like to think racism is a Southern thing, that it comes from a lack of education. And so when stuff like this comes out, they act shocked – but then seem to always write it off as an exception.

As I read I wondered if you’d include that lynching photo (glad you did). I’ve shown it to people in the northern U.S. who think racism is a southern thing.

Racism in the south is pretty mild compared to what it used to be; plenty of racist white people have black friends down here, they just say stuff behind their back and don’t bring it up when they are around.
Occasionally northerners will come down here or someone from california and mention they are surprised at how non-racist it is, the only thing I can think on hearing that is either:
A) They aren’t as accepted as they think they are
or
B) They are more racist than they think they are
Of course I guess there is always:
C) The idea they had of the south was just so extreme even with what it is; it is still a lot less racist than some 1970’s movie.

I’m in a good mood tonight. Their obsession with us is amusing. Through out their cultures, from Black Pete in the North to Golliwogs on that godforsaken island of inbreeds to minstrelsy in America, they have displayed this rather…shall I say “creepy” fixation on the Black race. We have every reason to mock them and and their attributes, but we do not. Are we that self restrained? Or just that uninterested in them. They are like scorned men who want a woman, but the woman doesn’t want them..so they resort to calling her out of her name and stalking her. Besides a number of instances you can count on one hand (Like that awful movie White Girls), we don’t stalk them and make endless caricature of their expressed phenotype. I bet my college wouldn’t protect me if I made a video with a homemade vienna sausage paste spackled on my skin, hair from a skinned golden retriever on my head, a Trapper Keeper stuffed down my backside and my lips glued to the inside of my gums. Its more of a cheap way to feel better about yourself is why most of them do it from what I can tell.
More to do with their own low self-esteem more so than any opinion on someone else.
Basically no matter how low they maybe in society or how poor they have done in life, by being racist etc….they can always feel better about themselves than that person or group.
That and some knee-jerk reactions/bias but thats a different sort of thing though of course still problematic. Just a different conversation.

Thanks for sharing the link. It certainly sounds as if some unfair play by the station was involved.
But playing a little Devil’s advocate, Rhonda Lee racialized her response to a far higher degree than the initial poster did. After reading several times, the poster used “black lady” to identify the person he is talking about (perhaps not the most PC way of doing it, but it is what he did – and people in the South are less PC about referring to people in this way). He criticized the shortness of her hair, not its blackness. She responded by calling it “ethnic hair”, “our hair” (as a black person), pride of her “African-American ancestry which includes her hair”, “European grade of hair”, “being comfortable in (her) skin” and finally, ““Conforming to one standard isn’t what being American is about and I hope you can embrace that.” (which is a very direct attack on the poster).
In other words, the post was more about the shortness of her hair which the poster thought did not meet media standards, not its blackness (although it is certainly conceivable some may interpret it that way — Rhonda Lee certainly did). However, she completely racialized the response comment. To limit racializing the response, she could have said something like due to the way her hair naturally grows, she finds it more professional and well-groomed to wear it that way, and the station has agreed to it. She could have said all sorts of stuff without racializing it further, which reduced its effectiveness (and possibly resulted in her firing).
Unfortunately, playing the race card means that whites have much more leeway in racializing issues, esp. if they relate to non-whites. To be fair, whites often feel they must walk a tightrope to be PC or appear colour-blind. Non-whites also have a tightrope to maneuver.

Sorry Jefe but I am currently living in Louisiana right now and my Girlfriend lives in Shreveport. She where her hair naturally and right after this incident happened she applied for a job, and the lady made it sound like her hair was a problem. When they talked on the phone it sounded liek she got the job but once she saw her hair there was a problem. The man who posted the complaint even made a comment about how she should straighten her hair.
LikeLike
OK, maybe I didn’t see posted man’s full complaint – nothing about straightening hair was in the link you provided.
I can’t believe that someone would get fired due to a single man’s complaint. There must have been several complaints, or the station must not have been satisfied with how she responded. Or worst case, they were looking for an excuse to get rid of her. As I pointed out, her response completely racialized the issue. Given that white people try to appear colour-blind (which the post in the link you provided appeared to do), she could have composed a well thought out reply that made the same points but in a more colour-blind fashion. I am not advocating that one personally should believe in colour blind racism, but sometimes one can reply in a way that focuses on the individual items in the complaint, not using a retort that links it to an implication that the poster is simply being racist (even if he is).
Was the lady who made it sound like your gf’s hair was a problem a non-black person? Assuming the “natural” hairstyle was well-groomed, I guess (and purely a guess) the lady associates the hairstyle with the more radical defiant attitude prevalent in the late 60s / early 70s when it was popular. Maybe the employer feels out of control or threatened by a natural hair style. Did the employer say exactly what the problem with the hair was?
Unfortunately, an employer can refuse to hire a person for whatever reason they feel is relevant. Maybe your gf can try educating the interviewer when she has the chance, eg, she could tell the interviewer that she always keeps a well-groomed hair style, and she found that commercial and home-made hair relaxers were too damaging to her hair and she could not continue using them long term.
What would you tell the job applicant who has very thin eyes due to the thick epicanthic eye fold over her single-lidded eyelid, and hears the interviewer telling her she needs to widen her eyes?

I’m not surprised. Just disgusted, as always. I think that, all too often, White people are taught to view POC as POC and not as individual human beings with souls and personalities. They get this idea in their heads that POC are simply so different and so foreign, that there is no way they could ever relate to them on any level. I see it in the way that when isolated White people meet POC, everything they have to say about them relates to their race, or when White people who want to write POC characters fret and worry as if they’re writing about something completely alien. (If it’s a different culture, sure, but if the character is an 8th generation POC in the same country as all the White characters, why should it be so tough?) When they assume they couldn’t possibly understand a POC, they separate themselves from them. A lot of the time, when people don’t understand something (or convince themselves they don’t), they get scared and fear can lead to anger.

Indeed, it is true that while blackface has fallen out of favor and is generally seen as being racist (even when it is being done on purpose), yellow face still continues in the popular media and is not seen as racist to the same extent.
Blackface still occurs, eg, Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic thunder. But that was a bit different as his character was doing blackface — not exactly the same as the actor doing black or yellowface but the character is simply black or Asian (played by a Caucasian).
But, in the case of Cloud Atlas, where the character switches race in the film, how should that be done? Maybe use a Eurasian actor who could be made to look (and presumably act) more Asian or Caucasian?

(CNN) — Two weeks after being arrested for a shooting he said was in self-defense, a Florida man has been indicted on a charge of first degree murder and three counts of attempted first degree murder.
Michael Dunn also faces a charge of shooting or throwing deadly missiles.
The indictment came down Thursday in connection with the November 26 shooting that killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis in Jacksonville.
Dunn has been held without bond since his arrest.
Lawyer: Shooting no Trayvon Martin case
Mom: Son’s accused killer ‘snapped’
The violence was sparked by a confrontation about loud music at a gas station, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Dunn told authorities that he had asked the teens to turn down the blaring music coming from their vehicle, which was parked next to his as he waited for his girlfriend to return to the car.
He heard threats from the teens, Dunn told police, he felt threatened and he thought he saw a gun in the teens’ car. He grabbed his gun and fired at least eight shots, authorities said.
Davis, among the teens, was killed. No guns were found inside the teens’ car, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Some have compared this incident to the Trayvon Martin case, the shooting of an unarmed Florida teen earlier this year that sparked nationwide protests and inflamed public passions over race relations and gun control. Martin’s shooting also focused a spotlight on Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows the use of deadly force when a person perceives a threat to safety.
Similar to Martin, Davis was 17, unarmed and African-American.
Dunn’s attorney has rejected such comparisons.

While another poster said they felt sorry for them, I can’t say I can muster enough sympathy or empathy for them anymore. I’m tired of seeing the world suffer b/c of their unresolved psychoses. But I also wonder if I can imagine how awful it has to be to know (for the few who think about it consciously) that you need the majority of the world to hate you in order to survive! I mean truthfully, if all was egalitarian and we all had the same opportunities and treated each other with basic human decency & respect–what would happen to whites? I live in the UK and stayed in Brooklyn as I have a family member that live there and met normal down to earth people who do not walk around with guns in their pockets. If they actually left their mollycoddled neighbourhood and saw some of the rest of the world they would understand diversity more. But instead they display a sense of entitlement and ignorance.

That is very true, but I have come to terms with the idea that these are individuals that can’t handle the truth. It would probably kill them to be faced with reality. In order to face reality they would then have to come to terms with years and years of being lied to about people of color.

Yet you can find billions of articles on WikiHow about how to look beautiful and “exotic” (obviously written and geared to white woman). The first tip is have olive, light brown skin to very dark skin or an wavy to afro hair. It is like PoC are fairy princesses for dress up. There are also articles on how to look “Asian” or”How to be an Ethnic Girl” like we are all just fetishes.
Lol, those are average white girls doing what they love to do at home playing dress up as other races and make fun of stereotypes because they are so “perfect” and “raceless”. Yes, I said average, for an example and I meant it (sucks to be clumped as monolithic, doesn’t it?
White woman like to play the “I am not racist. It’s just white men, we (white women) are a minority too” card. EXAMPLE NUMBER ONE! That video, and since they were white and entitled, they thought it was okay to post the video on the internet because “everyone should hear our opinion, we are mediators because we are white. Why would you not care to hear our opinion.”
I surprised they didn’t start with ,”well we are white girls and we think…..”
If you haven’t forgot you are still white with white privileged and internalized with “racism.” Being a woman aka “minority” does not make you NOT racist white woman. Sheesh….
Plus:
I hate the term racist, it is just pure hatred. Hatred doesn’t sound as cute and fluffy as racism , does it? Instead of saying you are racist, just say “I am hateful” and stop being a coward. Own up to it.
Racism is not a sickness (like people claim), there is no cure just treatment and the treatment is pretending. Saying that it is a sickness means you can’t help it if it “rubs off on you, it’s just a virus, that’s excusable and average.
The “oopsie, I can’t help that I am hateful. Darn! Not my fault.”
That’s my rant, I was searching along the web and found this. Great blog post.
