This year I am using the Washington Post. The last two years I followed The Guardian’s Counted database. They have lost interest, so for now I am following the Washington Post database. Their overall number of police killings, of the armed and unarmed of all races, is about the same as the Guardian’s, roughly a thousand a year.
Is this to be believed?:
- Jan to Apr 2015: 35 unarmed Blacks killed in the US by police
- Jan to Apr 2016: 17
- Jan to Apr 2017: 7
Are the police becoming less trigger-happy – or just planting more guns? Or is it a blackout by the police and the press, as Dr Melina Abdullah says?
If you know of any police killings of unarmed Black people by the police in 2017, please tell me in the comments below. Thanks!
I will update this post throughout the year.

As mentioned in another thread, police departments have increasingly classified numerous police killings of suspected unarmed people, disproportionately black, as having “unknown” weapons.
2015: 27 “unknown”
2016: 64 “unknown,” 52 “other”

Killed by police records all citizens shot dead by the police. It doesn’t look like police violence has subdued any from previous years so it’s likely unarmed suspects are being reclassified as something else.
It someone has the patience to dig through this list I’m sure there are plenty of non whites shot by the police whose deaths are questionable.

Just some facts from the ‘civil, multicultural and multiethnical Russian Federation’ to compare with:
a) regardless on illegitimacy of the practice, police is more likely to check identity papers and/or residence permits on people with explicitely non-Slavic and/or Muslim features;
b) since 2013, at least 40 imams of Northern Caucasus and Ossetia were killed without any report on the progress in case investigation whatsoever;
c) since the beginning of 2017, at least 13 girls wearing hijabs were arrested in Moscow (just for wearing hijabs);
d) many people (both Christian and Muslims) moving to Moscow from Caucasus have experienced discrimination at their working places just because of their religion and/or ethnicity;
e) people of Caucasian origin (e.g. Chechens, Ingush, Cercessian and other Muslims) are more likely to be tortured while under detention by Russian prison and police officers.

I am wary when the organs of the state (police, prosecutors and the news media) try to justify murder with alleged weapons. Sometimes months or even years later, some investigator will reveal that the murdered person was unarmed. By then, in the eyes of the non-Black public, the guilt of the Black victim is set in concrete.

The late, great Frances Cress Welsing warned us back in 1982:
“A major strategy in the war against the Black collective is the killing of Black males….These Black and other non-white males are being killed by white males in uniforms who have been authorized to carry guns. This particular form of murder and slaughter is called justifiable homicide.”

Someone thinks all cops are racist. You probably don’t care about facts so I’ll tell you, how many of those were shot just doing nothing. NON OF THEM WOW. . now if you dont want to read the list because you dont care about facts let me sum it up to you. 8/10 of the shooting were completely justified, one was not and was charged and fired. another was charged and fired after using a criticized neck hold. weird how nobody seems to bring up these facts.
-January 9th 2017: JR Williams, 38, Phoenix, AZ, Gunshot. The man shot and killed by Phoenix police officers after a chase Monday kept his hands concealed during the pursuit, threatened to shoot an officer and, just before shots were fired, turned and drew his arm from his waistband with a clenched hand, simulating a shooting stance, authorities said.
-January 10th 2017: Darrion Barnhill, 23, Reagan, TN, Gunshot. When Barnhill was ordered to surrender, he began to assault the officers at the home.
“He instead became aggressive to the deputies, assaulting both of them and slamming one of them to the ground,” DeVine said in a news conference.
-February 5th 2017: Nana Adomako, 45, Fremont, CA, Gunshot. Officials with the Alameda County coroner’s bureau said today that they have determined that a suspect who died in a confrontation with Fremont police late Sunday night died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head that’s consistent with suicide.Fremont police previously said that officers shot at the suspect, who has been identified as 24-year-old Roger Perez of Orinda, after he allegedly fired at them first.
-February 8th 2017: Chad Robertson, 25, Chicago, IL, Gunshot. Amtrak police officer just 18 months on the job was charged with first-degree murder for fatally shooting an unarmed man fleeing after being stopped over his suspected possession of marijuana, Cook County prosecutors said Friday.
-February 13th 2017: Raynard Burton, 19, Detroit, MI, Gunshot. Instead of stopping for police Monday, Burton hit the gas and crashed into a utility pole. Burton did not a valid ID licence. And then he ran A police officer who has been with DPD for 22 years got out on foot and chased the 19-year-old for about a quarter of a mile.The two men ended up in the backyard of an abandoned home on Webb Street near Otsego. That’s where the officer ordered Burton to the ground. Instead, police say Burton grabbed for the officer’s gun. The officer fired a single shot and Burton died from a gunshot wound to his chest.
-March 19th 2017: Alteria Woods, 21, Gifford, FL, Gunshot.Alteria Woods, 21, was killed by a bullet fired by sheriff’s SWAT team, said Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar. Deputies were first fired on as they broke a window at 5:45 a.m., attempting to get in to a small house off 45th Street, between 34th and 36th Avenue, he said.Loar said Coffee IV knelt by a bed that Woods was on and fired at SWAT team members outside the house. “He used her for personal protection,” Loar said.
-April 29th 2017: Jordan Edwards, 15, Balch Springs, TX, Gunshot. “Despite multiple verbal commands from the officer, the vehicle continued to reverse, backing into the main roadway,” police said. “The vehicle then pulled forward as the officer continued to approath the vehicle giving verbal commands. The vehicle continued on the main roadway driving away from the officer.” A fired Balch Springs police officer has been released on bond after he surrendered to authorities Friday to face a murder warrant in the shooting of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards.
-May 14th 2017: Tashii Brown, 40, Las Vegas, NV, Chokehold. An unarmed man’s death after Las Vegas police grabbed him in a neck hold has put a much-criticized law enforcement technique to subdue people back in the spotlight. “A lot of research, thought, and deliberation went into the decision to charge this on-duty officer with a crime,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “We recognize that the job of a police officer is challenging, and they face a variety of situations that most of us cannot even imagine.
“Nevertheless, police officers are not immune from prosecution when their conduct crosses the line and becomes criminal.”
-June 29th 2017: Aaron Bailey, 45, Indianapolis, IN, Gunshot. Allan, 38, The 45-year-old man who was shot and killed by police after leading them on a chase early Thursday morning had an extensive criminal background with records dating back to when he was just 19 years old. Allen was responding to a traffic accident involving a car that had flipped over on Madison Avenue, a few blocks north of Southport Road. As Allan approached, one of the occupants of the car started shooting. Whether the shooter was inside the car was unclear. A Homecroft Police officer and an off-duty Johnson County deputy had also stopped to help. They shot back, wounding the suspect, police said.
-August 30th 2017: Anthony Antonio Ford, 27, Miami, FL, Gunshot. Miami-Dade police said Sgt. Eduardo Pares was forced to shoot Ford after Ford fled from officers during a traffic stop at Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 68th Terrace in Miami’s Liberty Square neighborhood and a confrontation ensued in an alley.Police Benevolent Association President John Rivera said Pares fired his weapon because he was in fear for his life when Ford didn’t follow any of his commands. “As a matter of fact, he turned around and he went for his waistband as if he was going for something, and the officer instinctively felt that his life was in danger,” Rivera said.

Many of the Black commenters don’t “think” the cops are “racist”. We know the cops are racist because we see their ugly behavior and attitudes everyday. The police show a completely different face to Black people, a face that White people almost never see. So unless you have driven, walked or shopped while Black, you don’t have a clue.

In the mean time blacks that kill other blacks go straight to jail and there are several organizations that deal with stop the violence in Chicago area.
No one said you are taught to single out blacks in classes. That is the key factor here. The singling out comes when cops are trained by other racist cops who need to meet quotas and see blacks as easier targets to accomplish that. You wrote: “8/10 of the shooting were completely justified, one was not and was charged and fired. another was charged and fired after using a criticized neck hold.”
Yet going by your own account, there were two officers charged for murder in shootings. So which case are you claiming was nevertheless justified: the shooting of Chad Robertson or the shooting of Jordan Edwards?
Part of the problem is whether the officer’s account can be trusted. In a couple of these cases that you described, the officers claimed the victims appeared to be reaching for their waistband as if they had a gun. But how do we know these officers are telling the truth? In just the last couple years, we’ve seen cases where video footage proved officers lied about what happened and even planted guns on the deceased person’s body.
Then there is the variance in treatment between unarmed black suspects and armed white mass murderers. How is it that so many white men on killing sprees get taken into custody alive?
Did you know that unarmed Native Americans are killed by the police at about the same rate as African Americans? How do you explain this, if not because of racism?

Derick, you don’t have to do any of the things you listed above in order to be considered a racist. You don’t have to because it’s simply implied or the actions of a racist are usually implicit. Which means that these type of behaviours are either suggested, unspoken, hinted towards or an always present, underlying factor in most law enforcement officers’ interaction with people of color, particularly Black men.
The vast majority of law enforcement officers’ interaction with people of color/Black people are implicit not explicit.
To assist in helping you to disabuse yourself, I’ve provided three links amongst a whole lot more that published on the internet as well. Now, go and educate yourself and invite a few of your law enforcement cohorts while you’re at it.
“Defining Racial Implicit Bias – Also known as implicit social cognition, implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. These biases, which encompass both favorable and unfavorable assessments, are activated involuntarily and without an individual’s awareness or intentional control. Residing deep in the subconscious, these biases are different from known biases that individuals may choose to conceal for the purposes of social and/or political correctness. Rather, implicit biases are not accessible through introspection.” – Kirwan Institute – Ohio State University

“…i dont remember in any of my training to kill black people and put only black people in jail… i dont remember being told to treat black people harsher….”
You didn’t have to remember explicit instructions in your training as a cop to mistreat and murder Black people. The negative attitudes and actions of police toward Black people is implicit. It is baked into the very fabric of police culture and the US culture in general.
Those attitudes have been set in stone since the late 1600s. That is when Whiteness was developed to create a buffer between wealthy White land owners and a coalition of African and European laborers. The concept of Whiteness has been so successful that you don’t have to think about it ———- it just seems like the normal order of things.

Police in America were developed in the 1820s to the 1840s to do two primary things,
➤ routine patrols of working class neighborhoods to control outdoor spaces
➤ controlling unruly crowds
According to writer, David Whitehouse in the article, “Origins of the Police”:
Those primary objectives were true in throughout the early American republic. In the Southern cities there was an additional wrinkle: explicit control of the Black populations, both slave and free. Whitehouse describes a situation where:
Whitehouse further notes:
⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙⚙
derick foggs, you and your fellow police may never have been explicitly told to harass, beat or murder Black people. You knew years before entering the police academy who the target populations were and who to leave alone. Black people are always in the top three list of targets for abuse. That is as true in 2017 as in 1817.

then you ppl wonder why our laws are keeping the “black man down” when 89% of a culture is criminal supportive, then you ppl make up more than 40% of the total ppl on welfare and you ppl make up 13% of the total pop.
why is it is 99% of the case its always a black person with a mile long record that always gets blasted while doing something breaking the law no matter how minor the crime? because blacks always make things worse!

Your “insights” into Black culture are wrong.
50% of the percentages you sighted are wrong.
The conclusion you’ve drawn based on faulty information and propaganda is also wrong.
It’s OK to be ignorant. My question for you is whether you’ll continue to seek confirmation and validation or whether you’ll choose to gain a more accurate understanding?
I truly don’t mean to step on anyone’s toes here because I’m 100% certain Afrofem is overwhelmingly capable of educating you. The thing is, it isn’t her responsibility. It’s yours. In this case, ignorance is not bliss, it’s dangerous and people are literally paying with their lives for ignorance like yours. Ignorance like yours built and operates the system that leads to the welfare statistic you cited. I’ll do some of the work for you, but you’re going to need to take the ball and run with it on your own:
Black median household income is 37% lower than for Whites. Whites choose to segregate themselves to predominantly White cities. White taxpayers vote against funding public education in cities other than their own. That equates to decreased opportunities in predominantly Black neighborhoods. Lesser education leads to lower income opportunity. Cycle repeats.
It’s also a fact that women earn less than men in the workplace. So, is it any surprise that female-householder families accounted for 50% of households accepting government assistance? Children under 18 accounted for 39.2%.
Single-parent female-householded families accounted for 29% of Black households and 12% of White households. Hmmm.. I wonder what could be contributing to that? I’m sure you accept that Black males are far more likely to incarcerated than White males, because it’s critical to your narrative. So, I’ll skip those stats, but they’re on bop.gov if you’re interested. My guess is that you will not agree that disproportionate policing and unequal prosecution and sentencing has anything to do with it. You should look more into that though because that’s on topic with his post and your response. Just start with something easy like conviction rates or sentence lengths by race. I’ll look forward to your link showing a study where Whites get longer sentences for the same crime or that they have higher conviction rates. Heck, even if you can show that the percentage of drug users matches drug-related arrests proportionally by race. I’ll also mail you a dollar if you’ve even read this far.
So, your welfare statistic, that African Americans account for 41.5% of people that accept some form of government assistance while only being 13% of the population is accurate. Your conclusion is that it’s “because blacks always make things worse”. Like I said, you’re wrong… but who knows, maybe you’ll learn some truth while trying to prove you’re not.

“blacks are mostly criminals and black culture is heavily involved in siding with the thugs!”
Another longwinded bigoted rant by a driveby troll. Yawn.
I wish your rant was true. If Black people were ‘mostly’ (or all) criminals their lives would improve significantly in these ways:
☀︎ The police would stop shooting Black people and take payoffs from community leaders to guarantee the safety of every single Black woman, man and child.
☀︎ Black people would live comfortably from their criminal activity. No need for any type of government assistance such as WIC (nutritional support for women, infants and children) or SNAP (Food Stamps), Section 8 (housing assistance) or Medicaid. Black people would bleed unions for healthcare insurance coverage and “no-show” jobs like the Mafia currently does.
☀︎ Black people would live in tight-knit communities they alone controlled. The majority would be homeowners. Black people would have their own schools, hospitals, communications outlets and recreation spots. Not to mention thriving Black commercial districts filled with cash businesses to launder their ill-gotten gains.
☀︎ Black people would own the majority of guns in this country and use them to publicly threaten other groups with mass violence…and get away with such outrageous behavior. [Currently, over 61 percent of the estimated 300 million guns in the USA are owned by White men.]
https://www.vox.com/2015/12/4/9849524/gun-race-statistics
☀︎ Finally, MB, driveby trolls like you would be terrified of coming to majority Black web forums and spewing nonsense because they would fear immediate retribution from such dangerous criminals.
