The Last Rhodesian (2015), or lastrhodesian.com, is a website set up by Dylann Roof before he carried out the Charleston Massacre. It gives us a window onto what he was doing and thinking in the months before.
Some places he visited in his home state of South Carolina:
- March 16th: Sullivan’s Island, Charleston’s old slave port. Of the Black slaves who came to the Thirteen Colonies, 40% arrived here.
- March 25th: The Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, where Confederate soldiers are buried.
- April 13th: The Boone Hall Plantation in Charleston.
- April 23rd: The McLeod Plantation in James Island.
- April 24th: The Museum and Library of Confederate History in Greenville (pictured above).
Someone like that would understand that the Emanuel AME Church, where he carried out the massacre, was not just any old Black church.
1488: In the sand, apparently near Sullivan’s Island, he wrote “1488”. That is neo-Nazi shorthand for:
14 = “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.”
88 = “Heil Hitler!”
In one picture he burns an American flag. In others he poses with a Confederate flag.
There is a picture of the gun he got for his birthday – the one presumably used during the massacre.
Manifesto: There is also a page where he writes hurriedly about his views in 2,445 words:
His awakening: The Trayvon Martin case in 2012 led him to google “black on White crime”. He has never been the same since. He found the website of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a White Nationalist group. It showed page after page of brutal killings of Whites by Blacks. He then went on to read about Europe and Jews and so on.
His views on:
Blacks:
“Niggers are stupid and violent.”
“Anyone who thinks that White and black people look as different as we do on the outside, but are somehow magically the same on the inside, is delusional.”
“Segregation did not exist to hold back negroes. It existed to protect us from them. … Not only did it protect us from having to interact with them, and from being physically harmed by them, but it protected us from being brought down to their level. “
Jews: Most are White, but their Jewish identity, unfortunately, makes them think they are different.
Hispanics: Some are good. They respect White beauty.
“There is good White blood worht saving in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and even Brasil.”
East Asians: He has great respect for them. They could make good allies, especially North East Asians. If Whites die out, maybe they can carry something on.
Why Charleston:
” I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.”

Surprising that this sort of crap could be published:
“Dylann Roof’s friend: ‘He never said anything racist'”
A friend of Dylann Roof, the man charged over this week’s shooting in a church in South Carolina, has told BBC News that the suspect had told him a week earlier he wanted to attack a local university.
Christon Scriven, 21, told the BBC’s Rajini Vaidyanathan that Mr Roof “wanted to shoot that school up – UCA university of Charleston – it’s 3 miles up the street from that church.”
Mr Scriven said Dylann Roof “had no intention of harming those people in that church”.
He also said that he had “never said anything racist, never treated me any different”.

>>Seeing him burn an American flag did the clincher for me. Is it any surprise that the most unpatriotic people of all are Southern racists?<<
Um, him killing nine people was the clincher for me.
Now the south did have a legitimate argument: the principle of localism. That goes back 1000 years. A single person is completely free. Two people can give 100% of freedom to each other. MORE than two, and we get dissenting opinions. The larger the group, the less authority–not greater authority–a "leader" has to speak for all members of the group, due to these minority dissenters. That goes back to John Locke's "Two Treatises", Samuel Rutherford's "Lex Rex", and even as far back as John Ball and Wat Tyler's peasant revolt of 1381.
And on the principle of firearms–arms for the common man (egalitarian political power) is traditionally a LIBERAL position, also as far back as Wat Tyler's peasant revolt of 1381. All rights began with "Natural Man", the metaphorical Adam, and no government gave Adam permission to carve his first spear.
Part of it is the Scotch Irish roots of the South. The confederate flag is the saltires of Saint Andrew (Scotland) and Saint Patrick (Northern Ireland) with the red and blue inverted. Peel back the localism argument and you have the descendants of New England arguing with the descendants of New Scotland, complete with William Wallace and George Wallace sharing the same last name. So from the South's point of view and the principal of localism, the North did not "free" the slaves. Instead, they made all men slaves to Washington DC.
Now having said all that, the South was hypocritical, depriving people who had no beef whatsoever in 1381 or anything thereafter the most basic natural rights of life liberty and property. When John Brown stated that all men are naturally free and marched on Harper's Ferry, he was agreeing with John Ball. When Robert E. Lee believed that only the permitted should be armed, and suppressed John Brown at Harper's Ferry, he was agreeing with the modern progressive.
And also having said all that, this kid is still a loser full of fail. Did any of those people in church violate his right to life? No. Liberty? No. Property? No. He violated all three. "Natural Liberty: Ur doing it wrong." If found guilty (and he will be), then let him hang.
There is "southern" which adopts the principle of localism (see Clarence Thomas), and there is "racist" which can be very centralist nationalistic (see Hitler), and the two don't go hand in hand. Although many of one category use the other as a justification. It gets awkward having to defend one while condemning the other, but I feel compelled to do it. South Carolina's governor is a woman of East Indian descent.

I found it disgusting the way so many black people and their relatives were saying “I Forgive You”
The reason I say that is because it’s fake. We only show that forgiveness when it comes to white people. We will hold grudes with each other over stuff that doesn’t even come close to what this Dylan guy did and we will take that to the grave.
I also notice the way Dylan was handled, very gently, no marks on him, like he’s some errant kid, who just robbed a smartphone from a shop. If that was a black person ? They would have been strapped up like Hannibal Lecter.
But I’m not suprised or shocked
In every situation, whites like Roof think they are the ones getting mistreated. “Those mean blacks, calling us racists when we do racist things. How dare they !!”
They value victim status because they’re a cult.
That’s how cults work. A cult can never be the oppressor. It always has to be oppressed. That’s what keeps the members insular. They have to stay in the cult because they’re being attacked by forces from outside.
Every bunch of bad guys has to think they’re the good guys. The Ku Klux Klan thinks they’re the heroes. The Nazis thought they were the good guys.
It’s twisted, but it’s how many whites think. They can’t admit the truth because then they’d have to give up the victim status they’ve reserved for themselves. And they desperately need that if they’re going to preserve the messed-up lie that is their view of the world.
Despite the world of outrageous privilege whites in the USA generally live in.They think they’re getting the short end of everything. It’s mind-boggling that they could think that, but it’s really how they see the world.
Dylan Roof ?
He’ll plead insanity, meaning he won’t get the death penalty. Even if he goes to the slammer. He’ll be a hero aryan nation groups.

White supremacy racism is *the* real white religion. Even the churches had to be segregated even though they were all supposedly Christian. Something like the Charleston massacre is very dramatic but how many people understand that racism pervades every single area of human activity in the era during which we live? It acts as force multiplier for whites in the warfare that has brought them to this point in history. Of course they’re going to continue to practice it and preserve racist symbols such as the confederate flag. They’re damn right it’s “heritage”. That’s how it has survived longer than the lifespan of any individual. It’s passed on from generation to generation.
I also have a problem with the “forgiveness” that some black people offer ro white murderers before the body of their slaughtered loved ones have even gone cold. Suppose the president of the USA were assassinated and in his first address the Vice President said he forgave the killers. Suppose Bush said he forgave the accused perpetrators of the 9/11 event? What message would that send?
Black people’s lives do not matter by default in this country. Which people were property before being upgraded to a fraction of a human as a policital/demographic compromise? If we want black lives to matter we have to act like they do. I don’t think offering forgiveness to a deliberate murderer who has expressed no remorse is consistent with that. However, it is consistent with learned helplessness and a tendency to be more concerned about white feelings than ourselves. It makes me wince, to be honest.

Sometimes we have to let go of some of our anger and resentment for our own sanity. But I don’t think that they should be TELLING the mass murderer “I forgive you” before they’ve even mourned at their loved ones’ funerals. What effect do they want to have on him? If they wanted to make him feel guilt or shame good luck! He hung out with their folks for an hour before slaughtering them! If they wanted him to feel better I can only ask why.

That, combined with the racist judge expressing sympathy for the killer’s family just rubs me the wrong way. The whole scenario is racist and I think that black people end up following the script if we don’t actively question it. A black chruch shooter would have been described as an animal and a brute. His family and upbringing would have been blamed like that fire-fighter did to the murdered Trayvon Martin. In some circles, they’d be calling for the black church shooter to be lynched.

Black people can’t barely get sympathy or justice when they’re minding their own business and someone profiles them and kills them. White people seek out and murder black people and get forgiveness (from the victim’s family, no less) and some level of sympathy. Good stuff /sarcasm.

If the victims were thinking victoriously as black people who want to be free of this oppressive condition they would have used the unexpected visibility resulting from the tragedy to call out the pervasive racism and violence in American culture that led to the murderous act. They would have pointed out that the incident did not occur in a vacuum but in a country with a heritage of genocide and racism that continues to manifest in other ways such as the disproportionate incarceration of black people as well as police brutality against them.
But we’re not thinking that way. We want to hold hands with whites and sing and forgive them and continue to tolerate all the 5hit. We know they’ll be uncomfortable if we bring up their racism so we don’t do it. All we can do is pray right?
“Lord, first of all I pray that they don’t shoot me while I’m praying”
Do we think we’re impressing whites with our virtue?

I am aware of the stereotype that blacks are “angry” etc. As seen above, their are corresponding stereotypes that black people are passive. We can’t win in the court of white opinion because their racism is not generated by us. Black people need to stop caring and act in our own interest.
Roof murdered church people who had welcomed him for an hour. He shot up an 87 year old grandmother. A 5 year old had to play dead. Even by white standards these are as close to perfect victims as one can get. Anyone would be angry.

I totally agree but they would have directed the narrative away from the stupid spin that it was an anti-christian attack. Even if whites react with the usual denialand deflection, it would have forced them to hear what this reallly about. It might have also had a positive effect on other black people by allowing them to join the conversation. As it is, if the direct victims “forgive” what are we to say?

My mind just went back to the Sandy Hook shooting.
Some of the parents of the murdered children used their status as righteous victims to push a politcal agenda: tighter gun control. They said they didn’t want the tragedy to happen again. Their association with that cause brought visibility to the issue.
This is actually how black people operated during the 1960s when they were pushing for political change. The incident with Rosa Parks, for example, was not as spontaneous as most people think.
Now everything has been gutted to emotional soundbites and “I have a dream”. Actually drawing attention to America’s injustices is viewed as divisive and antithetical to the dream instead of continuing on the path to achieving it.
So we’ll have emotional ceremonies and flowers will be left. Some white people will participate and their presence will be appreciated. There will be photo opportunities for politicians while wind rustles the confederate flag at the state capitol. Everyone will feel good about “doing someting” but none of it will take us any closer to solving the actual problem. In fact, *it* won’t even be mentioned.

Pumpkin, honesty I think that might be something that could be best carried out by an entity that is already organized, has employees, a network, and access to the press. I would say that it’s an idea that should be presented (perhaps by petition) to the NAACP itself. If they were to accept such a challenge, they could be most effective in spreading the word and spearheading the organization of the boycott.
Of course, I wish I knew a better way to reach out to the South Carolina representatives directly. It might be even better to figure out what businesses THEY own—particularly those who are the most incalcitrant in letting go of their Confederate symbol.
At any rate, it’s easy to contact NAACP representatives by email. It just might be worth a try.

The UN will not put sanctions on the USA. That would have to be other countries. But would Canada, France, UK do that? Japan? Really don’t think so.
China and Russia would have more incentive to do so, but have much less concept of Human rights than the West, or maybe can say their concept of human rights is much different. China does not see human beings endowed with a set of human rights upon birth. Their rights are exactly what the ruler says they are (and that is not subject to the rule of law).
China would be perfect to point fingers back to the USA re: what they did to the indigenous peoples and to blacks in particular, but then fingers get pointed back to them regarding the Uyghurs and Tibetans and other minorities, as well as political dissidents. That is a dead end route to pursue.
Whatever is done in the USA would have to be done domestically.

I applaud you for wanting to find ways to figure out how to fight.
Notice how the “Native Americans” ie Mexicans are trying to take back their portion of the country out west and white Americans are going crazy…
the chickens are coming home to roost
running to another country is not the answer. Coming from a black/brown majority country, I tell you straight up– there is no where for black Americans to go
we are all struggling with the effects of white supremacy, because many of our black leaders, in black majority countries, are still locked into agreements that have crippled our economies.
Black Americans are in a favorable position, as “Americans” because of your economic power. Black Americans as a group have tremendous economic strength that you are not using to your benefit today. (they did in the 60s)
Case in point, Inadvertently black American women have helped countries in Africa to prosper in trade.
Look at how the natural/organic movement has taken off in the last 15 years. Shea Butter– that used to just be an ingredient that cosmetic companies threw in to make products sound exotic — now it’s a staple product used by black women and has helped the economy in countries like Ghana and Senegal.
MONEY is the strength that black Americans have– you can effect change by how you buy or don’t buy

Look – Those black people who are all over TV, forgiving Dylan Roof are a disgrace and cowards.
I also noticed another thing. Dylan Roof dropped out of the 9th grade but he’s real articulate with that manifesto. His grammar, spelling, punctuation, the words he used was not that of someone who dropped out of the 9th grade. I know you have spell check on Microsoft word. But his manifesto was a bit too academic for someone of his age and education.
White supremacists understand that as long as they send down some white people, to hug black people, hold hands with black people, pray with black people, that will be fine and then they’ll go right back to practicing white supremacy.
Also noticed how low his bail was, around one mill ? Hell Suge Knight’s bail is around 25 mill and Bobby Schumrda bail is a mill and he did not kill anyone
When you allow Satan to come into your house and I know they treated him like royalty when he came in, because black people always melt and fall apart, and on their best behaviour when white people come into black spaces.

Maybe bad choice of words, but I do get exactly what she is saying. As black people we will hold all type of grudges with black killers. For example a post came out on facebook about two black men who raped, killed, and burned the body of a young black female all for $40 and and Ipad. Black women were all over it talking about how horrible black men were and 1 called for marrying another race. A week before that a post was done on a white guy who killed this black female and there were 6 comments total and the worse was “he looks evil”. No call to stop dating white men or anything like that.
We have a warped sense of white is right and we are willing to forgive them for much more. I agree with forgiveness too in order to remove the hate and anger from consuming me. Though I must ask how is showing forgiveness and turning the other cheek going to help black people?

I think I’d file this whole incident under “Whites are not ignorant about racism”. This is not a hate crime, it is an act of racist terrorism. Mr. Roof’s manifesto clues us in that he is NOT CRAZY, and is very knowledgable about racism/white supremacy.

Then I will go so far as to say you don’t live in this day and age. Whites still engage in divide and conquer. For examples the use of “you are not like those other blacks” in variations. This is especially seen when it comes to pitting Hispanics and Asians against blacks. So unless the past was just yesterday then no it was not in the past.
When Obama took office they saw that as black unity against their interest of a white president. That made them angry and thus far has steam rolled their fear and racism. White the blacklivesmatter movement and black unity among such movements this has also lead to fear and a higher rate of racism. As per Roof’s manifesto it is quite obvious that his fear of blacks lead him to need to do something and also feed his racism.

I’ve noticed that too. I see it like this: if geopolitics/conquest were a game, White Supremacists are the whinners who cry foul/genocide when they lose, but consider all of their own brutal powerplays legitimate and evidence of White Superiority. They believe they are entitled to whatever land they have the power to seize, but when we as people of color use our own power to take that land back, it’s a crime in their eyes. That’s why you’ll rarely if ever hear White Supremacists say, “Australia for Australians, America for Americans,” or even “Europe for Europeans”, because doing so would mean that White Settler states like the US, Australia, and New Zealand don’t have the right to exist on the bones of indiginous people.

“I’m tired of all this fake unity also. Most white people agree with Roof’s viewpoint. They don’t support the shooting but they support the systematic oppression of our people.”
This.
I had mentioned in a post yesterday how a firefighter blamed Trayvon Martin for his own death. I read a news report later that one of them in Texas said that Dylann Roof “should be praised” for what he did. Only the dumbest, most entitled (but unsuccessful), white people will say that out loud in a climate like this. But I’ll say something that many people, black and white, don’t what to hear:
ALL, white people are racist by default. Yes, I said all.
It’s not too difficult to validate this because both black people and white people grow up in the racist white supremacist system whites established. Black people are also imbued with the ideals of white supremacy DESPITE the fact that acceptance of those tenets goes against the natural tendency towards self-love.
This is why we see studies where black children select white dolls as prettier even though they recognize that the black dolls look more like themselves. This is why some black people bleach their skin to become lighter in complexion. This is why some black people don’t know their hair texture because their hair had been chemically processed continually from age three. This is why some black people are totally against having a mate darker than themselves.
Self hatred is the manifestation in us of our indoctrination into the cult of white supremacy. For some of us, our experience might not have been as dramatic as the things I listed but we often had to work at better self-acceptance. After all, we’re torn down and devalued by this system 24-7. Self-hatred’s violation of the natural order constantly ushers us to a personal confrontation with white supremacy for the sake of psychological health and well-being.
However, I am supposed to believe that white people who grow up in the same environment and are fed self-aggrandizing information are somehow going to be unaffected and magically emerge “not racist and not seeing color”. It doesn’t make any damn sense! It’s wishful thinking at best, stupidity at worst. The only whites who may not be racist are those who could admit it and confront it. Black folks have to learn to say “I have worth”; whites have to say “I am racist and not all that”. If we often find the former challenging in this environment, how much more difficult for whites to give up a flattering delusion? That’s why they are ALL, A-L-L, racist by default. Whites could not have built their empire if they did not reliably produce racists.
It is no longer acceptable to be openly racist but we should know, for example, that whites consider us subhuman and that they endorse police brutality against us. THEY also know that’s true but you’ll mostly see it admitted in code. Remember the New York post cartoon (after the chimp attack in Connecticut) that showed police shooting a chimp and saying they’ll need someone else to write the next stimulus bill? It implied 1) Obama, the president, is still a subhuman ape, 2) the shooting was justified both because he is an animal AND by connection to the brutal CT mauling in which the chimp was killed. Still think that “respectability politics” will work for ya? That cartoon was thought up and slipped past the editors because it’s true from whites’ default racist perspective.
Also, police/vigilante brutality has been the focus of the Tamir Rice, John Crawford, McKinney Texas, and Trayvon Martin cases. However, they have another element in common. In all cases black bodies doing nothing wrong triggered calls to the 911 (emergency!) number. It’s more than just the police. “They” don’t want us present so they call people who are legally empowered to get rid of us. In a couple of the cases a black person was shot within seconds of police arrival. In another, police didn’t get the chance. Yet a white racist was able to walk into a black space and stay there for an hour before killing people. White supremacy entitled him to walk up in there without fear. NO 9-11 calls were made about a suspicious white man. One of my greatest wishes is that black people, in general, quickly understand the big picture of this thing.

The Australian Aboriginal people should make it their mission to increase their population– it would be very interesting to see how the white Australians would respond to this population boom, since wiping out the majority of the Aboriginals wasn’t enough.

It’s bothering you because it was an act of terrorism. They’ve always used that as a tool. The KKK did the same thing with their church bombings, cross burnings, lynchings, and so forth. Their aim was to chase black people out of the South. The 2015 church massacre was intended to drive fear into your heart and to make you feel even more unwelcome and unsafe in your country.
It’s totally understandable that you’d be upset. I think all of us need our moment to mourn this. We know what lies in the hearts of the phago-whites (the devourers, coined word) given history’s testimony. Whenever black people seem to be “getting ahead”, in the eyes of whites, overt racism ramps up. The resurgence of the KKK has been linked to reconstruction-era black upward mobility and political representation. After Obama became president the number of “hate” groups increased and gun sales skyrocketed. Mckinney Texas white hags: “Go back to section 8 housing.”
This shooting is just a stark reminder of facts that many people want to forget. You find them in denial because they still want ignore the bottom line. Whites have a cultural agenda and it’s a zero sum game with us.
One of the issues is that we’re lacking healthy expression for all of the emotional consequences of white supremacy racism. Our music, for example, has been co-opted and no longer speaks to these issues. Who can write a song about this? Who can rap about this? Who can make art about this? Who can be authentic about this? Why do we have to pretend not to be angry? What can provide an outlet for the fear and anger?
Yeah, It’s completely normal to be shaken by an act of terrorism.

Imagine how much forgiveness a Black person would receive if they massacred a group of unarmed White women anywhere, nevermind during Bible study in a church.
To openly forgive this demon, especially so soon after the murders is mind boggling. It’s like watching someone tell satan they forgive him, and to also tell him ‘God have mercy on you’ while he stands there stone faced and remorseless-I don’t get it.

IMO forgiveness is inappropriate and wasted if the transgressor one “forgives” feels no remorse or regret. So long as this scumbag holds the opinions he expressed then forgiveness just says that what he did doesn’t matter.
Maybe, just maybe, if he ever got a sense of perspective that straightened out that idiotic, twisted mindset, felt and expressed genuine remorse and worked to make reparation in the community he harmed, then people could begin to consider forgiveness as a remote possibility.
To forgive now? WTF. I don’t see how it can help. I don’t see how it can even be sincere. How can you not hate him forever? How can you not want to see him dead?

I know that forgiveness looks weak and I know that Roof hardly deserves it since he does not even show remorse, but I think I understand why they did it:
1. It is what Jesus would do.
2. They want to do what they could to save his soul.
3. They want to show that love is stronger than hate.
Remember, he wanted to start a race war. They were not about to let him win.

It’s just a difference of philosophy. If you believe in violence as the only real solution, then you laugh and scorn those who pray and forgive. But in my thinking, you can’t fault people for actually following their convictions, especially at a time when it would be easier to simply overlook them. It’s easy to be angry when somebody hurts you. It is not an achievement.
But the bottom line is that these people have the right to deal with their loss as THEY deem fit. For others, far removed from the loss, to try and judge their reactions, based on their own anger seems strangely misplaced.

Even though I cannot understand how they can bear to do it, I have every respect for the people who said they forgive the murderer. I hope doing so helps them: I doubt it will help Roof.
It is indeed a difference in philosophy. I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in a deity who will forgive the murderer’s sins. I don’t believe that a soul can be saved in the way meant by Christian tradition. I don’t believe in a soul in that way, to me a person’s soul is a synonym for their humanity.
I can’t help feeling that the only person who could possibly redeem or save Roof is Roof.
As for love being stronger than hate: I think it can be, I think it should be. But look around us. Racism is one facet of a wider lack of love. People value property over their fellow people. They carry guns. People die because their fellow human beings will not care for them in times of illness unless they pay. Rather than criticising those who hoard and worship wealth we are taught to criticise the poor.
If the people in Charleston have genuinely forgiven Roof then their love is stronger than his hate.
I hope it can make a difference, somehow.

Practically, a “race war” has been ongoing ever since white people started hostilities centuries ago. Roof couldn’t have started a race war. He was just a foot soldier in an ongoing campaign. However, the casualties and negative consequences of this war have been disproportionately on our side. When whites say there will be a “race war” that they mean is that black people will fight back which will possibly allow whites to drop all pretense. So yes, I agree that “forgiving them” and “praying for their souls” will prevent a “race war” in the whitespeak sense of the word.
Lets get real though, there is a lot of pain, there is a lot of fear, and there is a lot of anger. I didn’t listen to all of their comments but I heard one lady say that she missed her loved one dearly but she forgave Roof. Every time she uttered the word “forgive” you could hear she wanted to bawl. IMO, that word was strained and cracking under the weight of her other justified emotions. However, she took on the responsibiliy to protect white America from seeing even a hint of black anger. The onus falls on us to “turn the other cheek” and remain calm and compliant in the face of life-threatening injustices. I wonder where that expectation could have come from?

Yeah, the system commonly called slavery is what I was implying.
I think the multi-generational nature of the experience has made it hard for individuals to grasp the signs of abuse and how it is reflected in the default responses on both sides.
I just googled for signs of abuse in interpersonal relationships and found a site talking about emotional abuse (not even physical). I’ll just copy this here to make the comparison less abstract. How many of these could be applied to aspects of white behavior towards black people as a reflection of their racist culture? If whites are acting like abusers on an intercultural level, what kind of response would be triggered in black people unless there is a clear understanding of what’s going on and how to become empowered? Would white feminists be up in arms if the recommendation to women in abusive relationships was to “forgive him”, “pray for him”, and “stay with him”?
[I took out some of the less relevant or redundant for space reasons]
1. They humiliate you, put you down, or make fun of you in front of other people.
4. They accuse you of being “too sensitive” in order to deflect their abusive remarks.
5. They try to control you and treat you like a child.
6. They correct or chastise you for your behavior.
7. You feel like you need permission to make decisions or go out somewhere.
8. They try to control the finances and how you spend money.
10. They try to make you feel as though they are always right, and you are wrong.
13. They accuse or blame you of things you know aren’t true.
16. They make excuses for their behavior, try to blame others, and have difficulty apologizing.
18. They blame you for their problems, life difficulties, or unhappiness.
19. They call you names, give you unpleasant labels, or make cutting remarks under their breath.
22. They don’t show you empathy or compassion.
23. They play the victim and try to deflect blame to you rather than taking personal responsibility.
26. They view you as an extension of themselves rather than as an individual.
29. They invalidate or deny their emotionally abusive behavior when confronted.

I don’t want to belabor the point but I’m not against forgiveness per se. Many people unecessarily hold on to resentment for much smaller things than murder. The problem is that given the power imbalance that exists under this racist system whites are often forgiven by default.
Cops get off for murdering unarmed black people all the time. Even Zimmerman escaped. This is a country where whites used to lynch and terrorize blacks with impunity up to a few decades ago. In 2015, due to the work of those who came before, Roof will stand trial and likely be convicted. IMO, the victims should remember to be thankful that is the case and not take it for granted. There was a time when the police and the courts would have forgiven him on their behalf.
Anyway, they’ve been through a difficult loss and they’re entitled to deal with it any way that helps them. I just hope that what they said to Roof was really for their own healing.

I think most people who object to forgiveness do so because they think:
– You are saying what the person did was OK (not the case)
– You are absolving the person of all consequences (not the case)
I think the kind of forgiveness that the Family members of the victim are displaying is more along these lines:
– I refuse to spend the rest of my life bitterly hating you
– Although your penalty will be just, its still a pity that you wasted your life too
– My desire is that you have the chance to CHANGE who you are completely
It does a lot more to help the victims of this tragedy to have a better life without stress and anger. But it doesn’t let anyone off the hook. None of them are saying to let him out of jail.

Letting go of resentment is the only thing that can be reasonably inferred from the word forgive (apart from complete pardon). However, they don’t need to tell the terrorist that in order to resolve within themselves not to boil with resentment forever.
In a country where killers of black people are not always held accountable, do we really need to be telling them they’re forgiven before the trial has started or our loved ones have been laid to rest? If you don’t intend for the killer to be pardoned that would be an important thing to express in a court of law. Instead you say something that could be interpreted the opposite way. Why would the victims families consider it more important that Roof KNOWS he’s been forgiven (they’re not angry with him) than to ask that he be punished appropriately?
Context folks. They’re assuring him, and by extension white America, that they won’t retaliate. They’re putting whites at ease because they fear more violence. I’m not picking on these people who’ve been through an unspeakable tragedy. They’re not the first to respond in this way. I believe these are conditioned reponses by black people to white terror against which we have sometimes been powerless. Black people just wanted them to stop the lynchings, the church bombings the cross burnings. If white people are at ease we imagine there would be no violence so we try to placate them. It’s like living with an angry abusive partner. Furthermore, the perpetrators often wouldn’t be punished due to the corruption of the police and courts so we needed ways of coping with that. All of this is coming from a place of weakness.
Anyway, I’m going to try to drop it since I’m quite set in how i view the issue and I’ve already expressed it enough times.

They’re not sure if it was racially motivated but I know what I think.
This will stop when we collectively get off our knees and whites fear provoking us. I think total integration was a flawed concept and we are weaker as a group now. We wanted people who hate us to take our money and go behind closed doors to spi…serve us meals. We wanted those who think we’re subhuman to teach our children after armed guards had to escort them past angry racists. No wonder there’s a school to prison pipeline!
IMO, we should not have wanted to be in proximity to whites so that we can experience racism gone underground. We should have used the hard earned legal protections to build our own communities. The so-called Black Wall Street was rebuilt after the Tulsa racial terrorism of the 1920s. However, its final death knell was desegregation. When black people could spend money elsewhere that was done on a grand scale.
Hindsight is always perfect. Hopefully we eventually realize that we have a long-standing problem and that placing ourselves at the mercy of white goodwill (lol) is not the way to go. I read this article a couple days ago:
”
The ethnographic data is unique because it contains information on 172 Native American tribes geographically spread from Canada to the southern areas of the U.S. West. Mathew and Perreault tested whether the behavioral variation among tribes was due to the fact that they lived in varying environments – from high mountains to coastal regions to deserts – or because they inherited different traditions from their ancestors.
“Our analysis shows, strikingly, that behaviors can persist in cultural lineages for millennia,” Perreault said. “In other words, the behavior of a certain tribe, whether in constructing baskets or following certain marriage practices, is largely due to the fact that their ancestors hundreds or even thousands of years ago practiced the behavior. This means that there is considerable cultural inertia in human behavior, which may have persisted for up to 15,000 years.”

Of course, anthropology is at it again, studying those “others” and their quaint traditions. But, turning that mirror back on them we should realize that they are similarly programmed by their racist culture. It’s not likely to change. I made a post a long time ago about the cycles of the most violent and terroristic manifestations of white racism. This will generally occur whenever black people *appear* to be threatening the restraints of the system of white supremacy. Obama might have served as the symbol around which to galvanize the ever-present white bloodlust. His presidency saw a proliferation of so-called hate groups and a surge in gun sales. During these times, the unvarnished, unhypocritical terror will increase in order to nullify black people’s perceived gains.
Are we ready for that possibility or are we still “having dreams”?

Black people’s rush to forgive is a form of “learned helplessness” IMO. Many of us believe a white Jesus died for our sins too so that adds to it.
”
Learned helplessness occurs when an animal is repeatedly subjected to an aversive stimulus that it cannot escape. Eventually, the animal will stop trying to avoid the stimulus and behave as if it is utterly helpless to change the situation. Even when opportunities to escape are presented, this learned helplessness will prevent any action.
While the concept is strongly tied to animal psychology and behavior, it can also apply to many situations involving human beings.
When people feel that they have no control over their situation, they may also begin to behave in a helpless manner. This inaction can lead people to overlook opportunities for relief or change.

Even Levar Jones who was shot by that racist, coward pig for no reason was apologizing as he lay there in pain bleeding. He didn’t do anything wrong!
I’m not even chastising these people I’m just saying that we should take a look at ourselves. Just as whites are racist terrorists, we have also settled into, and culturally transmitted certain patterns of response formulated at a time when he had much less power to do anything about their behavior. That’s not to suggest that black people, as a whole, never take any action but that the “forgiveness” is conditioned and it has the negative effect of making us more passive because words have power. We can massage the word “forgive” all we want but the generally understood meaning is pardon. I’m pretty sure that’s what church people think when they hear that their sins have been forgiven.
I’m more set in my view of this phenomenon now than I when I first posted. So I guess I’ll just leave it at that.

““White countries for everybody”
LOL @ phil!
The “Americas”, Australia, parts of Africa and Asia say hi! You don’t have much room to talk about whats off limits after getting fat from taking a parasitic and aggressive outlook on the road and over the seas. Even if these white nationalists had “their own countries”, wouldn’t be long before they were persecuting, killing and robbing each other and many will be trying to get away… Oh wait, that happened already.”
Sounds like you referring to the country called ‘Afrika”

Africa is not a country it’s a continent you ignoramus. One in which every single ‘country’ was a European colony until the 1960s -70s.

Africa is actually a good example of white parasitism. They took everything not nailed down. You can find monuments from Egypt standing in Paris. Picasso’s cubism was ‘inspired’ by carvings taken from Africa. This fool’s manifesto alludes to a chunk of Africa stolen and named after a greedy white man. Even people were taken in large numbers.

There was an arson in Knoxville, Tennessee as well. Bales of hay set outside the College Hills Seventh Day Adventist church and set on fire. The church van was also burned.

What rely need to put in perspective is that little kids (3-6) don’t necessarily see race, they just see people. So at some point someone had to put the idea in his head that racism was a good thing.
Racism is not a personality trait, its a belief he learned from somewhere.

As soon as news of the massacre started to circulate the news, conservatives, mostly all white, tried their hardest to deny that race was a primary factor. Fast forward to now with the Chicago torture case, conservatives are jumping all over this pinning this on Black Lives Matter. The hypocrisy is staggering. White people are not to be collectively blamed for what individual white people do, but everyone else is? SMH
But back on the topic, Dylann Roof says that he’s not sorry for what he did. Not only that, he says it’s not fair for him to listen to testimonies from the victims’ families.
Wow. Just wow. He’s a white supremacist’s prodigal son.
