Remarks:
In 2007 this went to #8 in her native Britain, #4 in Black America, but only #55 in White America. In the video, shot in London, she attends the funeral of her heart.
On July 23rd it will be four years since she passed. R.I.P.
Lyrics:
He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you knew
So far removed from all that we went through
And I tread a troubled track
My odds are stacked
I’ll go back to black
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…
I go back to us
I love you much
It’s not enough
You love blow and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And I’m a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…
Black, black, black, black, black, black, black,
I go back to…
I go back to…
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black
Love this song. Love Amy Winehouse may she rest in peace.

I used to play Amy’s Back to Black album to distress from a long day. Her voice was just so rich and soothing. Gone too soon.

I love this album so much my other song is You Know I’m No Good and Rehab and Tears Dried On Their Own and Back To Black and Some Unholy War. She was fighting her demons and when i first purchased this album i had an eerie feeling she wouldn’t be here with us for too long. Sadly i was right. It made me sad to hear of her death. RIP Amy.

Her voice kind of reminds me of Nina Simone. What an unfortunate death. RIP

She had a unique and instantly recognizable voice. What a sad end to a gifted singer. RIP. On a sidenote, I just found out we shared the same birthdate.

Abagond, why did you put up the picture of a lynch mob enjoying themselves as the masthead of your blog? Are you planning to write something on jouissance and mass murder?

1. To remind us of the world we live in in the US.
2. The 85th anniversary of the lynching in the picture is coming up on August 7th and I hope to do a post on it.

My favorite song of hers to sing in my car was Me and Mr. Jones. In a sea of bland pop music, I loved her voice and her style. I’ll really miss her.

@Ikeke35: The part of that song that cracks me up is “What kind of fu*kery is this? I never heard that word used like that and it just makes me giggle a little bit. I like that song too.

That is a word I hear used amongst the black/west indian communities. If someone does something wrong it is described as ‘fu*keries’. That is how I have heard it used anyway

Mary Burrell: That was the first time I ever heard that phrase, ,too and I cracked up every time I heard it (and relished singing it). But it was also the following line that got me too:
“You made me miss the Slick Rick gig.”
Apparently, you do not mess with her tickets to see Slick Rick.

@Ikeke35: I know right. You described it so accurately “I relished singing it” me too. It’s great. I feel like a little kid who wants to say the naughty bad word. LOL!

I know what you mean. Going waaaaay back now, I remember when I listened to Kid and Play’s ‘Last Night’ and the line ‘you’re heads so bald I can read your mind’ lol

This video/song is beautiful and nostalgic. It brought me some memories of a distant time and place.
For some reason which I cannot explain this video remembered me automatically another one from a Brazilian female singer – Vanessa da Mata performing “Vá – Bicicletas, Bolos e outras Alegrias”. Watch:
In both cases we have an underline narrative where a female character is expressing her feelings in reaction to abandonment by her lover.
But there are differences: Winehouse’s song and expressed character was more forceful in her reaction to the loss or separation. Vanessa’s song and expressed character, instead, was slightly gentler even when expressing the pain of abandonment and/or infidelity.
In both cases (videos) I see (or associate?) also an atmosphere typical of a bohemian or hippie subculture where our characters move. And that, by its turn, brought me memories of other places (Berlin’s bohemian life in the 80’s; yes I was there for a few years) and times (the second half of the 70’s in Maputo emerging as a capital of a new African country but still with a strong European flavor in the air, pockets of Europeans still living there and a visible importation of European lifestyles including bohemian/hippie types congregating around some new musical styles – ah, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and the the emergence of electronic devices to make sounds and help create new musical styles at that time…
There are more memories and associations that this video brought to my consciousness but I will end here with my ramblings…
This is indeed the time of our lives…
P.S.:
It’s really sad that the young lady left us so young.
