John Crawford III (1992-2014), father of two, was gunned down by police at a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. Crawford was Black, the police officers were White. This was just four days before the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
On August 5th 2014, Ronald Ritchie, a White man at the Walmart, called the police saying that a Black man was loading a gun and pointing it at people, even at children. The police rushed in with assault rifles. They said that Crawford was waving the gun around in a threatening manner and refused to drop it, so they shot him dead.
The gun, it turned out, was an air rifle (BB gun) that he had picked up at the toy department.
Video from security cameras show that he pointed it at no one. When Ritchie said he was pointing it at children, Crawford was swinging it at his side absent-mindedly with the gun pointed at the floor.
When the police arrived he was not threatening anyone with the gun, as police claimed. Instead he was talking on his phone. The moment Crawford knew the police were there he dropped the air rifle. He said, “It’s not real.” They shot him – and then told him to “Get on the ground.”
LeeCee Johnson, his girlfriend and mother of his two children (with a third on the way), heard the whole thing – because she was the one he was talking to on the phone:
“I could hear him just crying and screaming. I feel like they shot him down like he was not even human.”
Angela Williams, who was at the scene of the shooting, suffered a heart attack and died.
Open-carry laws: Even if Crawford had had a real gun, he still would not have been breaking the law: Ohio law allows people to openly carry guns. Walmart, the biggest gun seller in the US, works with ALEC, which pushes just such open-carry laws (along with the infamous Stand Your Ground law).
The grand jury: After the police investigated themselves, the grand jury ruled that the police officers had acted reasonably and therefore did not charge them with a crime.
The Justice Department is looking into it.
No one has arrested Ronald Ritchie, the one who called police and flat-out lied about Crawford, getting two people killed. Knowingly “making false alarms” is a crime in Ohio. Crawford’s family is taking him to court.
Beavercreek is a well-to-do, lily-white-flight suburb of Dayton, Ohio. It is only 2.5% Black. From 2010 to 2013 Beavercreek fought to keep out buses from Dayton, which is 43% Black. Many Blacks do not have cars and depend on buses. In 2013, a month after Anthony Foxx became Secretary of Transportation, the first Black secretary in 12 years, the Federal Highway Administration ruled that what Beavercreek was doing was racist and therefore against the law. Rather than lose millions in government money for roads, Beavercreek backed down.

I can’t wait to leave this country. They hate us so much. They hate us like WE have done to them all THEY have done to us. I have a sick feeling that if we tried to leave, they would find a way to stop us for reasons even they don’t know. The gunning down of a Black man is just another day in AmeriKKKa and that should worry us. That this is so common that we are almost shell shocked from it. Fear of genetic annihilation. We can wipe them out at the drop of a sperm or ova, which is why they take proactive measures to wipe us out with artillery. The planet is being terrorized by these beings. But the Universe has balance. Their global population is at a decline and thank The Most High, because the planet can’t take much more of these people. Be wary, my people. It’s like they are setting us up so that we may react in anger and they have a reason to finally take us out. Watch out for these people. History has proven them beyond dangerous.

The BB gun being in the toy isle or sporting gun isle is totally irrelevant, being that in Dayton, Ohio, it is LEGAL to openly carry a fire arm, if you have a gun permit.
Hell, even if he was carrying a REAL gun, it would have been legal, if he had a permit, which the police didn’t even try to find out, before they shot him dead.
Did you gloss over that important bit of information on purpose?
Did you not see the picture of white people, carrying rifles and guns in the open in a shopping store?
The question remains, had police saw him carrying the BB gun, had they still shot him dead, even without the racist white man that lied about Mr. Crawford, pointing the gun at children?
I think we as black people, all know the answer to that question….

1. Sometimes black people remind me of feminists who say a woman should be able to dress like a whore and walk down an alley in the ghetto drunk at 3am without getting raped.
But here is my suggestion for black people: No black male should be allowed past 7th grade without reading The Isis Papers and MEMORIZING The Cress Theory of Color Confrontation.

I noticed that many white suburbs do this. They actively block public transportation from their communities, despite the economic advantage it would bring to their communities, just to keep blacks out.
Fairfax County and Loundon County Virginia, the 2 wealthiest counties in the US and suburbs of Washington, DC, have spent decades blocking public transportation from many of their communities.
The case in point: Tysons Corner, the economic hub of Northern Virginia and the Washington DC metro area’s “second” downtown. They fought tooth and nail to prevent metrorail from opening a line connecting it to Washington, DC and to Dulles International Airport. I heard from people attending those planning meetings that they did not want the riff raff (ie, blacks and latinos) from Washington, DC from coming out there and from being too close to their neighborhoods in McLean / Reston / Herndon.
The result: a commercial centre employing over 100,000 people in about 1 square mile with no real accessible public transportation. It had the worst rush hour traffic in the metro area. They also could not find enough service workers to work in the lower end jobs.
Arlington, on the other hand, practiced a “smart growth” strategy clustering offices, shopping and residences around metro stops. Arlington benefited from the economic boom.
In the past couple years they have begun building a metrorail line to serve the area, but this is after metro has been running for 38 years already. Of course the costs now are many multiples higher than it would have been 35 years ago.

A woman simply walking along the side of the road was tackled to the ground and punched in the face over and over by a White policeman. A Black woman leaving a nightclub was allegedly told to stop walking and when she didn’t the policeman tackled her to the sidewalk and started punching her in the face. There are a lot of bad cops in America and we have to make sure we do all we can to get justice for Black female victims too.

Reading this, I thought back to a Pando.com piece from Gary Brecher, a.k.a “The War Nerd”, on the issue of Gaza vs. Israel. To wit, Hamas lobs a few errant rockets in the IDF’s general direction. The IDF responds by curbstomping Hamas and the Palestinian people along with it. But there’s something more to that – here’s a group of people that the ultra-orthodox types want to “push into the sea” and out of existence and the Palestinian Arabs are still there, existing, thriving even.
Meanwhile, Israel’s drenching its head in Palestinian blood like so much post-game Gatorade and the rest of the world’s looking on in a mixture of shock, revulsion, bemusement and disbelief. Whatever moral authority it had has long since evaporated and history won’t look back at Israel kindly.
Here, it appears the name of the game is to eventually wear down and shame white America into decency and fairness. Except white America has proven time and again that it has little desire to give blacks that unless forced by political circumstance and expediency. Mass militarization on part of blacks seems satisfying at this point, but it’s ultimately fruitless for the same reason as Gaza: you’ll get curbstomped by people who love curbstomping and are total pros at curbstomping.
Brecher’s ultimate viewpoint?
Except that didn’t quite work out for either the Aborigines or Native Americans – both groups are dangling over the precipice of extinction as a whole. White America would love to have blacks share that same sort of precariousness, especially now that their usefulness as an “endless” and inexpensive source of labor and stress relief is now over.
But like Palestine, black America’s proven it’s going nowhere no time soon. So it’s back to the slow-motion grind of having LEOs and aggrieved Confederates pick off blacks one shot at a time, with the same results – a lot of blood on white America’s hands and everyone else side-eyeing the U.S. of A.

I feel your frustration.
US White run companies produce the guns , ammunition and bullets. If there was a “race war” which white company will keep producing ammunition for the black Amercans? And how long would ones bullets last before a hypersonic weapon is turned on a crowd at high power? The US of A is among one of the nations that loves developing and testing hypersonic deadly weapons. Weapons and crowd disperse tactics have advanced since 1960, I suggest before anyone speak of going “nonviolent” read up and involve a day of heavy research. Violence without a goal is futile. Personally, I think Black Americans should lay off the embarrassing attempts to gain sympathy from whites. Speak in the language of your enemy. Whites don’t display sympathy toward their enemies. Lol even the Art of War highlights this. If Whites Americans/Europeans etc truly had sympathy toward Blacks would this caste system still be in place and would they not be so defensive and whispering that everyone who sees a racial caste system is deluded? I cringe when I see the black American population protest with white validation signs that profess,”Please Love Me, I Am Person Too” signs in 2014. It is 2014 not 1962. You would think Black Americans would have learned asking for sympathy is pointless.
Before the “violence” blacks or any nonwhites who disagree with this caste system have to organize , yes organize and actually work together and to make up ways to emphasis the cause. The Lunch Counter Sit Ins had a concise point, they didn’t just charge in with guns screaming “let us sit” and the Bus Boycotters didn’t show up armed because we all know they would have gotten their heads blown off 40 times over. They were calculated. So we all agree, no one finds getting profiled and shot by the police very fun, so how do blacks directly affect the police system? Blacks should know what fuels the police system, who lobbies them, their investors, the names of the people who own the prisons, the families, the police rights and citizens rights, who arms them and lastly which areas have the highest incarceration. I don’t mean work within the system, voting and begging are useless. Just remember White Americans would just love to have justification to the world to commit genocide against black people. Black Americans should think critically.

There is violence and there is “violence”. It’s not always about killing and smashing stuff. If you want an approach that will hurt the people who need hurting then economic violence is worth considering.
Attack corporations by staging boycotts and by aggressive negative PR campaigns. Spend your money with people who share your interests. Let POC start more businesses in competition with the establishment and then make sure that you support them. NOT because of any bootstrap bullsh!t but because your economic decisions are an important part of your arsenal. We all know that the deck is stacked against “elevating” yourselves by American-Dream hard-work cliches; that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about taking business away from whites. At the moment you are funding the structures that attack you. An additional reason to wish Mr Crawford had never gone to Walmart.
Attack politicians by organising more effectively and maximising your political influence. I’m not suggesting that POC should appease or pander to whites but, hard as it may seem to believe, there are many white people who are personally, ideologically opposed to the current system and all its inherent inequalities. Drag some of these people on board and get them to add their votes and their spending power to a fight back. How many whites do you hear/read spouting sympathy and good intentions online and in the print and broadcast media? Call them out and get them to put their money, votes and actions where their mouths are.
If the idea of allying specifically with whites is distasteful then strengthen alliances with radical groups that are made up of diverse demographics.
There’s a time and a place for traditional force too, against key individuals, businesses and property, but that’s a path that needs to be trodden with care.
The name of the elephant in the room is Revolution.

Stay off the phone when in public. If you must use your phone in public, find a piece of structure you can use as a temporary “phone booth”, a place you can sit down, a place away from other people, foot traffic…

Stop allowing women to rape you for your time with phone calls about nothing cause thats what they are doing.

In my own neck of the woods, I see local supermarkets catering to ethnic/national minorities – Brazilians, Mexicans, Jamaicans, Ethiopians, etc. These structures remain completely separate from mainstream America, as they cater exclusively to their own. Black Americans used to have structures like these, if only through the necessity created by legalized segregation.
And that was probably the biggest failure of integration – it integrated the black man’s money, but it didn’t integrate the man himself.
Money talks. If black Americans began quietly denying mainstream America their hard-earned cash and instead put it towards building their own structures, the mainstream will stand up and take notice, if only to figure out where the heck those 10-15% profit drops are coming from. Let black America use its economic power to crack the whip, for once.
@ GiaTheSwan
At this point, a combination of diaspora and rebuilding for self appears to be the best case scenario – gingerly step out of the way of the onslaught and showcase your talents elsewhere to people who actually value them.
Unfortunately, I think the biggest fear we have of rebuilding our own structures that cater to our own is that by doing so, we’ll effectively create our own Bantustans and make it easier for white America to banish us back in that cubby corner, especially after we’ve won the hard-earned right to mingle and patronize their establishments. The image of “da ghetto” doesn’t help, as most blacks tend to see anything that’s completely 100% Black as a failure or a joke, something to be shunned, especially in comparison to “normal” 100% white structures.
How many people espouse “getting away from the ghetto” as the highest aspiration they have?

I get your point and i agree to some extent but in the long run, this wouldn’t work. White people and their companies, would just black ball every black person from working in their companies.
Whites would say, “well, if they won’t spend their money with us, they won’t have ANY money, too spend!.”

Blacks won and earned right to mingle, support and patronize white communities by giving them millions daily as if they can buy their way into white validation. Aspiring to “get out da ghetto” is a tired mantra the media uses to trick black americans to throw their money to corrupt white owned companies. Look closely at PBS and other white owned stations like BET advertising children and teens speaking of leaving the ghetto. They have an agenda, they want black Americans to make it a goal to strive to spend money in the white community. The Urban League was a nightmare for blacks, uprooting them from the south where they lived on land, grew food and could have built thriving well off communities and sending them to small one one room apartments and broken cities hence the the ghetto began. Just think of what would have happened if blacks stayed on their land in the South and had each generation build a room to the house they lived in?
Companies do to change a point of view, they rebrand the item, make a new picture, try a new tagline to its audience. Rebrand the ghetto to each other. The question is how? Do people need basics, food, shelter, protection? Should there be a neighborhood patrol in the community and less dependency on the cops? Should people donate to buy at wholesale and sell to each other? Lol even “number running” helped blacks, although the white government considered it illegal because they couldn’t take a huge chunk of it for taxes. Blacks donated money and replayed it in their own neighborhood lottery and many hundreds helping many blacks with their rent money. Many older blacks speak fondly of it.
The black community should only try to rebrand the ghetto only to themselves, the goal should not be trying to prove white people or anyone else for that matter. To even start this, blacks need to gather again in a hub , be it the internet or in person, in the 60s, churches also doubled as community gathering regardless of religion. People trained in defense tactics and educated themselves in these hubs before taking their movement to the streets. Personally, I think churches are huge convention centers that are useless to the black community these days and look the other way. The internet is big and vast, the gathering can start here but it shouldn’t end here. There has to be a time when the gathering must be taken to the neighborhoods.

The internet is a blessing and the curse. It is confirmed that the Canadian Government pays internet trolls/shills to derail thought provoking forums to bait users into arguing instead of debating. They go to political parties, organizations, race, war discussions and post to sway public opinion or derail. These are not everyday opposers, to some it is a side job, it is how they receive their monthly paycheck. One should be alarmed by users who oppose and argue for years with the same raving behavior they started with. Or users who keep popping up under different names attempting to derail with an odd persistence or bait people into getting blocked.
@ All Users
No one on this site should argue or pay attention to paid nonsensically trolls who devoted themselves to manipulating conversations of this blog into something nonproductive for a few bucks.
“The Harper government has been monitoring political messages online, and even correcting what it considers misinformation. One local expert says the government is taking things too far.
Under the pilot program the Harper government paid a media company $75,000 to monitor and respond to online postings about the east coast seal hunt.” —WMCT.
If a Western government paid shills to derail an issue like seal hunting, just what they will do to forums with users who debate of how to part from an oppressive caste system. Lol don’t feed the trolls.

Physical buildings – COMMUNITY CENTERS, SCHOOLS, DAY CARE CENTERS, churches…
Places built by us and just for us: for training, teaching, raising, planning, ORGANIZING and disseminating information. No one can do this for us, but us!
Rediscovery of our own innate African values, religions, philosophies, tenets, language, ceremonies, rites of passage, self-love, SELF – RESPECT to rid ourselves of westernized thinking (confusion) and beliefs that separate us from our true selves and each other.
Or will we just only settle for making our confused selves “acceptably black” to the eyes of those who would prefer that we were all acceptably dead, living up to those stereotypes non-black people have of us?
Our children are our future. How we treat/teach/value them will dictate that future. The choice is ours. Do we remain in their system – ways of doing things, or do we return to our own heritage?

Yes physical buildings! Schools are mandated by the US Governments for blacks to gather in masses. We have to be realistic, churches are convention centers that are more focused on collecting your money and caring less about your cause like Jesse Jackson and his useless group. Community Centers and Churches and community ran Day Cares seem like your best bet but those welcome infiltrators and derailing groups. How about houses? In the 60s-70s and even many years later, it was normal for blacks to go into each other houses to learn , train and gather. Houses are smaller, you can control who leaves and enters the premises. Or did blacks get so brainwashed by white people and their stereotypes that blacks don’t trust each other in their homes?
Organizing and a group is what is needed. Ferguson could have stopped the outside looters if they were more organized and everyone had to show identification to join the protests. Seems extreme but it could have helped to know who you were standing with so you can point out the outsiders. This could have stopped outsiders and provocateurs from just sneaking in and causing mayhem.

We DO have major trust issues that stem from …. way back when…
I don’t know what the answer for that is. Maybe that might go away if they start dropping bombs on us – again.
Houses are good! Which reminds me of the days when we ALL (doctors, milkmen, porters, lawyers, etc) lived in the same neighborhood. Now we’re supposedly “integrated” (and losing ground… something’s wrong with that picture!)
ORGANIZATION away from the Western ways of seeing and doing things is needed on so many levels. It’s daunting and overwhelming to think about how far we need to go given the present state (thank you Thwack!) of dysfunction we are SUPPOSEDLY immersed in.

So many people think the idea of a paid anonymous troll is so far-fetched that they never give it more than a moment’s consideration before dismissing it outright. Not every troll is a bored 15-year-old or a disgruntled 55-year-old on disability and SSI.
Identifying venues where potentially thought-provoking discussion could be had and skunking them with as much comment noise as possible is one way of controlling the narrative. Enough people throw their hands up in disgust and away away and the people behind the paid trolls win. Simple.
You already have people whose jobs are specifically to shape and manipulate social media for favorable outcomes and positive publicity, so paid trolling isn’t such a big stretch.

Then we really don’t have anything to worry about, do we?
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If it comes down to bartering and alternative currencies, then let it come to that. But that’ll take a tremendous paradigm shift and many black Americans are simply not prepared for that. At least not yet.
On the other hand, I believe that greed is one of the last impulses that are capable of overriding mainstream America’s zest for bigotry. They haven’t quite figured out a way to cut black America out economically without grievously wounding themselves – and besides, the list of potential replacements is a bit…short.
Mexicans? Filipinos? Chinese? Other South Asians? Poor whites? Who’ll replace the Negro as a juicy and neglectable source of easy profit?

Personally I’d say hell, yes. They certainly had the right idea. I agree with most of the Panthers’ ideology and strategies (except that they inclined towards the “wrong” kind of Communism – Marxism and Marxist-Leninism are not sustainable real-world systems).
The ten-point thing was mostly fine, but could have been drafted more thoughtfully. Some of the points on it, while I personally support them, would have seemed unreasonable and unjustifiable without expansion and explanation. Even then, they would have been dismissed without negotiation by any white authority. The exemptions from draft and freeing of black prisoners, for example. But as the Panthers were, to some extent, revolutionaries, they did not necessarily seek to settle demands by negotiation, so there was no fundamental need to compromise and water-down demands to make them acceptable to whites. The bigger problem would have been the qualms some black people may have felt at the wording.
The Panthers were good, practical socialists. Their social initiatives were exactly the kind of Mutual Aid practices that Anarchist Communists promote. They took responsibility for providing services and support that the State would not or could not offer.
As an organisation I have great respect for the Panthers. Like all organisations they had to tolerate a few unfocused hotheads and petty criminals, but that is not the fault of the ideology or the core values of the organisation.

As for the shooting of people in the back: officers seem to deliberately put themselves in situations that would make them potential targets IF the suspect was armed and hostile. Again, putting themselves in what looks like danger provides (in their minds) justification for shooting a person in the back after the manner of a cowardly b/\stard.

Not only the Black Panther Party of SELF DEFENSE had the right idea, so also the Nation of Islam. They were/are strongly based upon the ideas of BLACK OWNED businesses, doing for self, uplifting the community, black pride, land ownership, self-defense and so forth. We had Thurgood Marshall on the US Supreme Court. Even the NAACP seemed to be about something – back in the day, unlike today.
Those were radical times back then.. and radical Blacks (aka anyone Black who stood up & spoke up for Black people) scared and agitated white America. Even Martin Luther King, Jr.

I can kind of understand why people would be like that. They were a pretty radical group. Although they had the interests of the people at heart it would be difficult for a lot of people to trust them. In your country and mine we are largely brought up to respect law and order and to obey rules. Some of us break out of that conditioning and realise that laws and rules are not always good for the ordinary people, others don’t.
To law abiding people the Panthers may have been pretty scary. These were very serious people, not play-actors. People conditioned to respect the rule of law and government sometimes find it hard to accept things that go beyond those bounds. Also, while POC were obviously conscious of their situation, fear of the unknown can make people afraid to take the steps toward change.
With people like the Panthers the saying about making omelettes and breaking eggs would conjure some pretty daunting possibilities.
There is no doubt that they were targeted. Such is the risk of radicalism. As the saying goes, the rich and powerful will never allow us to vote their wealth or power away. Nor will they sit idle while we use other methods to level the playing field.

Buddhuu,
If my memory of history is correct, the Black Panthers certainly began as a Law Abiding group. They were only scary because they were Black men who carried guns openly, dressed and spoke militantly, and followed the police to insure that they were doing their jobs – legally/properly. That made them a huge threat to the status quo…
Can’t have Black men and women standing up, protecting, taking charge of their own communities, openly counteracting the establishment’s slave patrols – NATIONALLY. This revolutionary threat had to be neutralized, or no telling what might happen next with these uppity Negroes with guns operating WITHIN the law.
The Panthers did other positive things for the community. They should not have been seen as scary – but then most white people see “different” as bad or frightening.
Enter J Edgar Hoover and the FBI with their disinformation (dirty tricks, lies, agent provocateurs, spies, …) anti – Black Power campaign that brought this organization to its knees. The full might of the US government brought to bear down against the ascension of the common people. This is what all governments wind up doing. CONTROL.
As far as I’m concerned, the Panthers began within the rule of law. Funny, isn’t it how the oppressed are expected to remain within the rule of law while their oppressors freely and openly operate outside those same laws and rules.
White militia groups are tolerable, at worst. Black militia groups must be checked and brought down. Whites with guns, okay. Blacks with guns, can’t have that!

I liked learning of them, I asked family and friends because I did a Google search and found the group on this a site that defines and explains terrorism in parts of America. Funny how no one mentioned Weather Underground. From asking around I learned:
In the 60s-70s many Black Panthers homes were raided, original members were shot and killed leaving behind the nonthreatening members or the brainwashed. They were infiltrated to the point where the Black Panthers described every other Black Panther as an FBI infiltrator. The groups soon fell apart.
The Black Panthers started clinics and there were Native Americans Groups and Mexicans Black Panthers who worked alongside and with the Black Panthers. There were classes on how to handle the police and law. There were clinics, free lunches, young black kids learned spanish because they partnered with the Mexican Panthers. Kids would learn these laws and quote the laws to cops so they could not be charged with any random acts. It was all abouy unity and protection. They followed cops to make sure they were doing their jobs properly. They were organized and that is something blacks desperately need! To be able to group together and the black male and female population learn his to counteract police brutality.
The Black Panthers have demonized and stereotyped by white scholars and the white media to the point where blacks find them shameful, so when you think of Black Panthers people conjure up some illiterate guy speaking about shooting kids. Whites have turned them into the KKK of blacks and now they are known as terrorists sadly.
I liked what they stood for. Of course they had their flaws but what group doesn’t?I think the New Black Panthers are riding their legacy and if they were serious about police brutality and the black community they would start a new group with a different name and actually plan things, not stand on a legacy and do zilch.

The penny dropped. Sorry, King Kat, I see what you mean now.
I’m afraid due to personal bias I tend to focus on the Communist and quasi-revolutionary aspects. The BPP were not a cuddly civil rights group. Their armed patrols, their embracing of Communism in a country that has a paranoid fear of that ideology… This was not a group of coffee-morning fund raisers. They were activists, commie activists.
Even the social initiatives that I referred to earlier, and to which King Kat alluded, were radical. White politicians would not have put those in place. People doing it for themselves is a threat to establishment. It is Anarchist Communist mutual aid in action.
As a largely Marxist-influenced group it is hardly surprising that they were easy to depict as scary.
Media were quick to focus on forceful occupations of buildings and confrontations with police, and slower to emphasise positive community programs.
It’s easy, with hindsight, to say “what were people nervous of?”. For people who lived in areas not directly served by the Panthers’ efforts, second hand news and propaganda would not necessarily show the positive side of a commie group. They sure as hell would show the shooting of cops.

The Panthers may have been influenced by Marxism. So what? Are commies PRINCIPLES more innately evil than the capitalists principles? I would argue the opposite..
Your focus is exactly where Hoover wanted all white racial frames or lens to be – on some sort of boogeyman, in this case a meaningless communism/marxism connection.
Never mind mind the fact that the BPPSD was a positive forward thinking long overdue group that was willing to take the future of a generation somewhere positive, by doing for SELF within the parameters of the laws that the system of racism/white supremacy traditionally used against oppressed people, and Blacks in particular.
I wonder just how much that mattered to the hungry little recipients of their Free Breakfast programs and such that the Panthers had an affiliation other than some pernicious, for profit capitalistic organization?
You should do yourself a favor and further research the Black Panthers.

Okay. Thanks for clarifying. It’s good we’re all on the same page.
I’m reminded also of The Guardian Angels. A civilian vigilante crime fighting group that took to the streets and subways. First in NYC, and then grew into an international organization.

Whatever the Guardian Angels were/are, they DID NOT stop & frisk, choke, shoot or kill Black people routinely, or otherwise for the powers that be.
So, as an endangered Black person, who do you think I was going to be more wary of, them or the police?
At the very least, GAs were eyes and ears on the street, helping to keep both wayward crooks, and violent COPS from running amuck. There’s something GOOD to say about vigilantism when the people felt safer around an unarmed civilian group than they felt in the presence of sanctioned armed enforcers of the law/establishment.
Today, in the atmosphere of a growing Police State (swat teams, armored vehicles, militarized weaponry, restrictive laws, fewer rights, warrant-less home invasions, …) we’re now in, these types of vigilantes would certainly be deemed as true revolutionaries.
The GAs and Panthers were friends of the people. Who are the police (DOJ,POTUS, Supreme Court) serving and protecting? Certainly not Black people!

GA are not armed. They are allowed to act only within the law. Police officers who kill innocent people are armed and act outside most people’s perception of the law, even if the corrupt system ensures that they are rarely prosecuted.
The Panthers’ patrols were armed and prepared to do what was necessary.
There is no contest.
The law is there to protect privilege and the instruments of privilege. You will not beat privilege by unquestioningly respecting the wall of laws it hides behind.

As a general rule, that’s correct. But at the end of the day everyone acts according to their own conscience – and personal ideas of survival and safety. It’s against the law to shoot cops, but cops still get shot.
The right to defend one’s self is not illegal – but that depends largely upon who’s doing the final interpretation of the law. Regardless, the expression, “…. be judged by 12 than carried by 6,” makes a lot of sense.
In effect it seems you’re stating that ONLY “armed” citizen patrols are useful against privilege and corruption.. and that the GAs and other unarmed observers or neighborhood watch/patrolling vigilantes, (like the Black Muslims of The Nation of Islam) are a useless force in their communities because they are confined by the Law. I disagree.
Tell the people living in cities where private and concealed carry handgun ownership is largely disallowed and illegal, that they are only allowed to act/respond to wrongdoing according to the law. People are waking up to the fact that laws are largely ONLY for common people, and the elite on top usually exist ABOVE the Law.
I tend to think that any resistance against corruption, crime and oppression, even without guns is better than none at all. The greater the number of resistors, the better the eventual outcome for the people.

Many just naturally assume that since they’ve wronged blacks for so long, blacks must want revenge. IMO these racist whites are just so defensive and are always on guard.

Thomas, who was in the Wal-Mart store with Crawford the day he was killed, was subject to relentless questioning by police before being told that he had died.
