It is 2288. Racism between Americans has disappeared but in a way no one expected: They lost their country and everything they had when China took over 150 years ago. No one could stand up to the death ray machines of Operation Beautiful Spring. A third of Americans died. In 2288 two-thirds of the people living in North America were Chinese.
The comments from Chinese readers sound strangely familiar:
- Get over it! – Operation Beautiful Spring was 150 years ago! Why do you keep bringing it up? It is Ancient History. Everyone who took part in it is dead. Do not blame me: my family did not come to North America till 70 years later. I have nothing to do with it. You are living in the past.
- The Chinese inventor argument – Look at all the great things we invented: starships, warp drive, transporters, replicators, androids, the cure for cancer and on and on. Where would mankind be without them? What did the Americans ever invent? Model Ts, Victrolas and Apollo rockets? Don’t make me laugh.
- Intelligence tests prove that we are born with the best brains in the world. We were doing better than Americans even on American IQ tests 300 years ago! Face facts: we naturally belong on top. We know how to run things properly.
- American social pathologies – Americans are poor not because we took everything and run society for our benefit, but because Americans have bad values. Even back in the 1900s they had higher rates of violent crime and out-of-wedlock births than we did. You cannot blame us.
- Bootstraps – My grandfather came from China with just 25 yuans in his pocket. Instead of complaining he worked hard and pulled himself up by his bootstraps. If he can do it, anyone can. Look at the Vietnamese and Lebanese – they come here and do fine. So it is not as if we are racist or have something against Americans. Americans just do not want to work hard.
- Kumbayah! – I do not hate Americans. Some of my best friends are American. I do not see an American, I just see a human being. We need to get beyond nationality and learn to live in harmony.
- You are being divisive by constantly talking about Chinese people. Why are you so obsessed with Chinese racism? You are making Americans hate us, I hope you know that. You are making things worse, not better.
- You are not balanced – How come you never talk about out-of-wedlock births like those well-dressed, articulate Americans we let speak on television? You are avoiding the true issues affecting Americans. Americans are racist too, you know. One time in high school some Americans jumped me and beat me up. How come you never talk about that stuff? You are not being even-handed.
- You are hurting the anti-racist cause by saying bad things about Chinese people. You are driving away well-meaning Chinese readers. There will be no change until you learn to speak to us nicely.

I picked the Chinese because:
1. It seems at least possible they could do such a thing sometime in the not too distant future. (But, as it turns out, empire builders often come out of nowhere: the Romans, Greeks, British, Arabs, Mongols, Portuguese and Hittites were nothing great 500 years before they rose to power. But the conquest of North America by, say, Papua New Guinea would not be believable.)
2. It is easy to model a North American invasion on their invasion of East Turkestan.
3. They are neither black nor white and so cannot be expected to favour either for racist reasons.
Speaking for myself, studying Chinese history helped me to see that whites are no better than anyone else, that they are on top merely through an accident of history, that they are shaped and twisted by their power and the need to maintain it. Which is a subtext of this post.

I don’t know about that. We have Vincent Chin and other Asian Americans who have been murdered at the hands of white people with little or no consequence.
And I am pretty sure that both Black and Asian communities in the United States have issues, such as the black hair industry as just one example.

Abagond,
Is does not follow that your study of Chinese history gave you the realization that “whites” were equal to all others (that’s a rephrasing of your take that “whites are no better than anyone else”).
What you mean is that the Chinese are every bit as imperialistic-minded as the “white man” AND HAVE BEEN for a much longer time.
But so are radical liberationists like yourself. Incredibly imperialistic-minded.
The parallel is only good insofar as it says that the imperialistic-minded individual and collective can rationalize and justify his imperial-mindedness.
But not all imperial minds are alike.
A Chinese imperialist isn’t a black liberal imperialist isn’t a white Supremacist.
You must go deeper.

The europeans might have influenced them recently but even back in the day, asians, japanese and chinese looked at pale skin as favorable.
Basically in this scenario africans of various nationalities would still have it worse than the americans.
Excepting for seeing way more chinese people on TV; in many ways, the average americans life probably wouldn’t really be different. Its just that the elite would be asians looking at them disdainfully and as less human than other anglo’s.
And the arguments the chinese make in this scenario aren’t actually that bad, 150 yrs later with super technology at their disposale and the anglo’s can’t be bothered to get ahead?
I mean; were talking robots, spaceships and god knows what else, at this point it should be damn easy to profit. If there is any need to. I mean its basically star trek, does true “wealth” even exist?
The chinese do seem to be smarter and we are more prone to reproducing and violence than they are.
And americans are lazy, we don’t try hard at school and we always try to use short cuts to get ahead.
Americans are pretty dang racist, I suspect in this future scenario it would only be worse.

I said, “A third of Americans died.” I put that in because a third of all blacks who fell into the hands of slave traders died before they ever saw the other side of the ocean. It is not based on anything in Chinese history.
I say “the Chinese” because it does not have a plural and “Chinese” without the “the” means the language, if anything. The word “French” is the same way.

I do not think this article increases hatred towards Chinese people. The actions of this fictional future China are only used as a metaphor for White America today. It does not in any way say that this is how all Chinese people in the world are right now. It does play upon current fears of `The Yellow Peril’, which seem to be common in the US. However, Abagond more or less said that was to make it believable. I do not see it being used to justify irrational fears of Chinese people.
Abagond has investigated and posted about many issues pertaining to East Asian and South East Asian people in the past. If he had a problem with Chinese people, I doubt he would ever put so much time or effort into exploring the racism we suffer as well.
@ proudchocolategirl & Nom de Plume
The only country I have heard of whose history would point to White beauty ideals influencing it is South Korea. There may be others, I don’t know, but it is difficult to find such things.
Pale skin was apparently already admired a long time before White people turned up and there are plenty of East Asians who are naturally paler than White people.
As for large, round eyes. I am not so sure that is a White beauty influence. If one looks at some natural East Asian eyes (not surgically achieved) and some White eyes, there are plenty of East Asian eyes that look round.
e.g. http://hairstylesarea.com/tag/asian-women-haircut
Some of the women have stereotypical East Asian eyes, but there are a number whose eyes are round, or whose eyes are simply not at a slant. Just like other races, Asians have different eye shapes as well.
Most of the eye surgery done is to turn a single eyelid into a double eyelid. Half of all Chinese people are born with double eyelids and somewhere around a third of Japanese and a quarter of Koreans are born with double eyelids. Also, single eyelids are more common among men than they are among women and are also associated with aggression. If you see advertisements here in Asia, the emphasis is on women being cute and approachable, not looking sexually aggressive and angry like in the West. I dare argue the surgery is to look like those who were born with double eyelids and to increase femininity by East Asian standards.
LOL If you believe small body frames as a beauty standard in East Asia were brought here by the West, I have to ask if you have been here! 50kg and above is fat no matter your height. Being under 40kg for a woman is considered good and not unhealthy at all. That’s called anorexic in the West.

If you grant the first paragraph then the rest of the post pretty much follows, give or take. And that is true no matter WHO you put in charge of those death ray machines. As far as I can tell the people in China are just as human as anyone else and so that level of power would corrupt them just as surely.
On the other hand Chinese history is nowhere near as violent, racist and genocidal as white history, so the first paragraph is unlikely to come to pass at Chinese hands. But I chose them for the reasons given above.

I took out all cases in the post where I used “the Chinese” as a noun (but left in “the Americans” and “the Vietnamese and Lebanese”).
That made it better in that Chinese commenters now speak more in the first person, which seems more realistic (Americans rarely say “the Americans”, for example), but it also makes them sound more conceited and insufferable. For this post, however, that is to the point.

Perhaps the problem here is that some are not able to read the story as an allegory which it is. If you happen to be one of them, check out what allegory means.
As for the chinese imperialism, one should get into chinese history. Back in the 70’s when Deng Xiaoping started his radical economic reforms, he stated: the goal is to get China back where it historically belongs, to the center of the world. Get it? And they have been doing that ever since. China sees this a normal historical state of affairs. Nothing more. They truly believe that it is their destiny and rightful place to be the center of the world.
For centuries chinese looked on Europe as being the most distant pit of humankind, too much of a mess to get involved, but one which could be exploited commercially, hence the Silk Road etc.
China tried invade Japan at least twice and stopped only because of the costs in soldiers and naval vessels. True, it was during the mongol regime, but still, China.
They have invaded neighbours in the past and do so today via commerce and people. They see it only natural. The sheer size of the population, volume of commerce etc. is in their favor. Also something we in the west, and partuclar americans, should remember: they do not see this game played by yearly quarters or such nonsense, they see it as a long road ahead, but one which will place China in the center of the world during this century. Communist party of China said so much back in the 70’s. Funny how people have forgotten it.
As for racism, China is still a racist country. They see themselves as humanbeings. Whites, europeans, are still considered as pink devils, stinking outsiders, to whom only certain leves of cultural inside is to be revealed. A bit like in Japan, where nobody tells everything to outsiders. Chinese see themselves as true whites, not europeans, and have had white make ups for centuries. Just look at some miniature statues depicting noble beauties from 1000 years ago. Yeap. White skin, totally white.
Chinese think that blacks are just above animals. Hence when there was a fire in one campus about ten years ago, the firemen saved some foreign students from the dorms, but let the ones housing africans burn. When they were asked why they did not save them, the firemen were genuinly puzzled and stated that those were for the african blacks.
In conclusion, yes I know that there are hundreds of ethnic groups whom we see only as chinese and the mandarin chinese are just one of such, but the culture and alikeness of these groups make them see each other as one compared to the outsiders. Just like an european sees an italian and polish as fellow europeans when in Africa etc. When we talk about China, we should understand that it really is more like a sub continent that happens to be a state, than a national state. It has been like that for thousands of years. One could compare it to EU in some extent.
Also, I have no ill feeling towards the chinese, chinese culture or food or anything like that. I do not consider them as being a race or in anyway beneath me. I just bring up some things to this conversation.

Yes, I thought that I had seen this type of post before on this blog….Except in this post the roles have been reversed, Asians being on top of the pecking order.
Hmmm, I really don’t see how racism would end when/if things get flipped around though. Just a different face/race calling the shots this time.
Watched that video of the mixed race girl Lou Jing and I must say it reminded me that Asian people are still racist, although not all of them.
Interesting post.
The woman in the picture reminds me of an Asian woman from Hong Kong I met at Oxford Street station last year standing behind me in the queue, she was crying quite badly and when I asked her what was wrong she told me that her bag had been stolen along with her purse. She asked me for my mobile phone number, which I gave her after telling the people at the ticket office to help her. Her name was Sonia. She never did call to tell me if she was alright, which I found rather strange at the time. Made me wonder why she wanted my number so much.
Just thought that was relevant information to share.

Also, bear in mind that most of what anyone knows about native americans is what we grew up watching on TV when we were young.
In all the western movies (and I’ve seen many), the native americans were always depicted as troublemakers who went around killing all the white people. Aside from that, you never really see anything else about native americans. Also, as far as I knew or know, most native americans were killed off or are mixed with other races now. One interesting thing about being told to ‘go back to Africa’ is that black people who are the descendants of slaves are the only people who cannot point to their countries of origin. Continents perhaps, but not countries. (Of course there are some who think Africa IS a country, but that’s another topic). Just the thought of how families were torn apart and how people were sold all over the place boggles the mind, not to mention all the name changes. The Trans-Atlantic slave trade has accurately been referred tp as ‘The Great Identity Theft.’ To know who you are is to know where you come from. The effects of this have carried over for centuries. An absolutely brilliant strategy.

He is hilarious, especially his moniker! He does have some funny lines. He can’t be that high in IQ, if he honestly thinks any self respecting ‘coloured’ is going to debate him on their low IQs. Who does that? You can debate these fools to the cows come home and it will be to no avail but a waste of breath, time and energy. Another crackerism!
You didn’t notice that the “Doctor” dishonestly conflates the word “overwhelming” with “actually being correct”. Despite his intended context, having an overwhelming amount of questionable data/test results doesn’t mean that it’s correct data. It just means that there’s a lot of it to sift through.
To these tools it does. To read them, you would think that they all had Phd.s in genetics or similar fields. None do. An apt allegory would be my basement before I moved; a whole lot of junk discarded, and a little retained that was actually useful. The sifting through the junk to get to the useful items was time consuming and laborious. These guys go straight for the junk, they are intellectually lazy, have no inkling as to what it is they are reading but make pretend that they do. They employ verbosity and hyperbole to give the impression that they do know what they are talking about. In short, they are full of shit.

Exactly. They use big words but fail to understand the meanings of same, so they can’t possibly utilize those words in proper context. It’s like trying to follow one of Glenn Beck’s stupid-ass chalkboard diagrams of paranoia and idiocy!

To complete that analogy the Americans would have to 1) See speaking English (?), staying in school, and pants being worn off the ground as “actin’ Chinese” 2) abandon their children and claim “marriage is for Chinese people” 3) live in neighborhoods that looked like a bomb got dropped on them even when they didn’t 4) commit huge amounts of American-on-American crime and blame it on the Chinese 5) assault innocent Chinese in Chinese shopping districts for fun 6) insist that taking the Chinaman’s woman was a political act but scream that an American woman dating a Chinese guy was dating the oppressor 7) cry at the camera when a stone-cold American murdering rapist is arrested that “He wuz a good buoy he wuz gettin’ his lahf tegevuh!” 8) live in public housing while spending the monthly check on weaves 9) yell out loud in movie theatres and 10) order steaks well-done with ketchup, run the waitress ragged, and then refuse to leave a tip.

@jay: “commit huge amounts of American-on-American crime”.
Well, you do. Actually americans are killing more americans all the time than any al qaida network, iraki terrorist cell or afgan taleban batallion ever did. That should make one wonder what the F is going on and is there perhaps something wrong with the picture??

Yep – that’s very, very true. Few americans want to admit it, though! There is definitely a lot wrong with the picture. I’ve been wondering what the F is going on for quite a while, personally…

Part of the problem is american ignorance, most are honestly unaware of just how much more violent, raping and criminal we are in general as compared to other countries.
I guess it would go against their personal philosophies of christian capitalism making them better human beings than all the secularists out there.

For someone who refers to people of color as “the dregs of the planet,” you seem quite committed to understanding their “fragile ego.” How many posts have you made on this article alone?
As brothawolf already stated, there seems to be psychological disturbances among a certain portion of Abagond’s readers. Franklin played it right in ignoring them. How can you really contend with the mentally disturbed after all?

@ sam,
Well the last murder that took place in my neighborhood was a connected loanshark named Rocco who had beaten somebody who owed him money a little too badly the week before. He was hit in front of his house and the killer left his money in his wallet and his wife and kids inside untouched. No one’s been killed in my neighborhood since. Go three blocks north into the ghetto and there’s one or two shootings a week, quite often grandmothers and babies who got in the way of a bullet that J’KWON intended for J’VON. Recently white people have begun moving into that ghetto and the biggest complaint is that they keep calling the cops on the drug dealers.

No, I merely responded to your irrelevant (certainly for this blog) comment.
Actually what has actually become apparent here is that whilst you maintain these ‘hoods’ are living in the black ghetto somewhere and thriving through their life of crime, you are actually on first name terms with a known criminal!!!! Perhaps when Criminals live in a White neighborhood they are somehow more honourable than those who resides in a Black neighborhood…

Apparently Jay’s here only to attempt upsetting apple-carts. If he’s here for any other purpose, it surely escapes me, since he seems NOT to have learned/believed/accepted most of what’s been posted here.
But for the “cats” who hang out in this alley that enjoy toying with deliberately silly little “mice,” Jay’s obtuse foolishness is pure kitty play..
Speaking of play, anyone seen Franklin?
I heard a rumor that he was talking to the Chinese leadership about this upcoming invasion, and how they might best to handle America’s ongoing rat and mice “issues.”

Why do we assume that the Chinese will be any different from the clique of whitemen that we already have to deal with? In my mind, replacing one group of insecure men with another is not accomplishing anything. The same bs will take place with chinese men, as it relates to black folk. They’re gonna bombard us with images of white and yellow asian women, seek to exploit black athletes and entertainers, brainwash blackmen to chase after their women, exploit the beauty and sexuality of blackwomen for financial gain. In other words, same s**t…different race. This is why i make it a point to remind black folk to keep it eye level…Black v. Non-Black is how the world deals with race. Other blacks can disagree all they want, It’s Reality! It doesn’t matter who the race is, the same bs is gonna take place. There’s too much envy involved, which is why blacks will always have conflict with other races. Black people, view the world as it is, not how you want it to be. “The Universe” doesn’t care about utopianism. Just the facts people, just the facts!!!

Why do people keep saying asians are smart? Don’t they know that USA and most western nations have an immigration policy where they let in mostly only the skilled asians in, such as doctors and engineers? You need a certain amount of points to get citizenship in western nations and to also get in. The more qualified you are, the more points you get. That is why the SMARTEST asians enter the western nations. You don’t get plumbers and electricians who are asians because they are not let in the country. Your western nations require more skilled people, not carpentes! As an Indian, our country is facing a brain drain. A lot of smart people, actually the smartest indians leave to US or UK for higher educations. It is mainly the smart ones who get in. Take this:
EACH AND EVERY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER IN SCIENCE FROM INDIA HAS DONE ALL HIS RESEARCH IN WESTERN NATIONS. NONE OF THEM IN INDIA.
What this means is that you cannot stay in Indian or asian countries and invent or discover anything new. Asians are mainly good at memorising stuff and rote-learning. They get high marks in US and UK schools for 2 reasons:
1) It is mainly the smart asians who enter the western nations because of immigration policies.
2) They have very good memory and are good rote-learners. They are not creative and flexible in their thinking.
Trust me, I am an Indian and I know that asians are not the smartest, but they are smart. Asians are horrible at research. They cannot think up anything new.
What amazes me is that some western people, including some asians compare the inteligence of bogans, white trash, rednecks and neo-nazis with asians to prove their point that asians are very smart. Well if you want to do that, why don’t you compare the dumbest in these western nations with the dumbest in asia, many of whom have never gone online, drove a car or never even heard that man has landed on the moon.

This was a great post. Very well-presented piece; I explained it to my niece when she asked me why some kids were mean to her.
She’s half black in a school that is almost 100% white and Asian in New England: Not an easy place to be not-white/Asian.
