Here are the ten most gorgeous men in the world who are famous enough to have an article in the Wikipedia. See below for how the list was produced.
1. Oh Ji Ho (1976- ) is a South Korean actor. He made his name by starring in “Couple or Trouble” (2006) on Korean television.
2. Barack Obama (1961- ) is the current American president.
3. Johnny Depp (1963- ) is an American actor, best known for playing Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films (2003- ).
4. Keanu Reeves (1964- ) is a Canadian actor. He starred in the “Speed” and “Matrix” films.
5. Will Demps (1979- ) is an American football player.
6. Idris Elba (1972- ) is a British actor. He was in “The Wire” on American television.
7. James Franco (1978- ) is an American actor.
8. Paul Newman (1925-2008 ) was an American actor and is a Hollywood legend.
9. TJ Holmes (1977- ) is an American news presenter on CNN.
10. Boris Kodjoe (1973- ) is an Austrian-American actor. He was on the American television show “Soul Food”.
In time I will do a post on each one of these men. I already did one on Obama.
Honourable mentions: Michael Jackson (when he was black), Wentworth Miller, Morris Chestnut, Brad Pitt, Tupac Shakur, Hill Harper, Tyson Beckford, Shemar Moore, Russell Wong, Nigel Barker, Laz Alonso, Djimon Hounsou.
The top ten black men:
- Barack Obama
- Will Demps
- Idris Elba
- TJ Holmes
- Boris Kudjoe
- Michael Jackson
- Wentworth Miller
- Morris Chestnut
- Tupac Shakur
- Hill Harper
The following men did way better than expected (they did way better among voters than nominators):
- Oh Ji Ho
- Keanu Reeves
- Paul Newman
- James Franco
- Barack Obama
- Will Demps
These men did way worse than expected (they got way fewer votes than nominations and seconds):
- Chingy
- Omarion
- Blair Underwood
- George Clooney
- Derek Luke
- Mark Wahlberg
- Matthew McConaughey
Chingy and Omarion did not get a single vote even though they each got four nominations and seconds, beating out over 200 men to make it into the poll.
How I made the list: I hade three days of open nominations on my blog followed by four days of an online poll. Commenters were allowed any number of nominations and seconds, but voters could only vote for one man. There were 487 nominations and seconds for 253 different men. All those who were at least fourthed made it into the poll: 36 men. The poll got 264 votes.
Hardly a perfect process:
- Oh Ji Ho’s fans caught wind of this poll are started linking to it, driving him to first place.
- Because of the nature of this blog, the nominators mostly seemed to be black American women – not, admittedly, “the world”.
- Yet they did not seem to make up most of the voters. In fact, even apart from Mr Oh’s fans, this blog got ten times more hits from East Asia than it ordinarily gets.
In the end it produced a far, far better list than I could ever have done on my own or as a straight man. And better than People magazine or anyone from Hollywood could have done.
Thank you to everyone who took part (even if your favourite lost)!

Keanu was born in Lebanon to an English mother and father who is Hawain, Chinese, Portuguese and Irish. His father looks very Hawaiian.
He lived in various places, but as a young child, settled and went to school in Toronto. he’s very canadian. Was a fantastic hockey player (goalie)in Toronto. I think his nickname was The Wall, as very few pucks got past him.
I think the results are interesting, it doesn’t mean that Black women prefer White guys, Gorgeous is gorgeous. I love my Black men but with the fact 70 percent of us Black women never getting the chance to marry, we need to be more open and give other guys a chance. In the end, you will still have the privilege of bringing up a beautiful Black child, as our genes usually dominate.
Scientifically, women are drawn more into a guy’s personality, rather than looks and outside appearance. that’s why we may marry even older guys or not so atractive ones
Scientifically, men are drawn more to a woman’s physical appearance which is 1 reason why they never will marry a woman 30 years older etc.
So in the end
generally women for the most part go for what’s inside
genrally, men for the most part go for things like skin colour, weight , hair,

I would draw no conclusions about black women from this poll. It is impossible to say what the demographics of the voters were or who voted for whom.
But there are three reasons to believe that voters were less black on the whole than the nominators:
1. Links from Asia drove up traffic to the poll.
2. A link from Poll Daddy would probably bring in a more general American audience.
3. I have good reasons to suppose that lurkers on this blog are whiter on the whole than the commenters. On most posts 1% comment, 99% lurk, but on the poll 29% voted. That is an extremely high rate of participation.

Mira,
Wentworth’s father is of African descent. He has described himself as black before and has been photographed with black members of his family.
Hence, his role as “Coleman Silk” in the film adapation of Phillip Roth’s “passing” novel “The Human Stain”.
Islandgirl,
Really good observation! Michael was always androgynous. He just pronouced it (quite artifically) as he got older for his “public image”.
Lynette,
Damn, I thought the same exact thing! This list doesn’t seem to match the list of who everyday black women (who are pretty diverse in themselves) would call the “most gorgeous man in the world.”
Funny, Aba usually breaks down the racial implications with all of the other “most beautiful” lists. What about here?
Does it say something that out of the 5 black men listed above, the majority of them (three) are sons of non-black women?
Do you guys think this whole “Eurocentric standard of beauty” affects how women of color judge men as it is said to affect that of their male counterparts ideas on women’?

In a poll like this men who have a transracial appeal will do better than those who do not.
So black men who appeal to white and Asian women will do better than those who appeal mainly just to black women.
Likewise, white men who appeal to black and Asian women will do better than those who appeal only to white women.
I doubt there are many lists like this where the top white man is at #3. Four of the ten winners have a mixed background (Demps, Obama, Kodjoe, Reeves).

Because of the way it was done, it is hard to break it down by race. I will probably do one just with black men and then split the voting by (self-identified) race (black, white, other).
“Does it say something that out of the 5 black men listed above, the majority of them (three) are sons of non-black women?”
I think it says that many voters were not black. Just like the list of “the most beautiful black women according to white people” is far more mxed-race than its black counterpart.

Abagond, I must say that you have put together a very impressive blog. However, I have a problem with how you deal with the issue of mixed ancestry. You seem to categorize everyone with any amount of known African blood, regardless of physical appearance and cultural background, as black. You even labeled Wentworth Miller as simply black. You say that you do this because the prevailing racial categorization scheme in the United States is the “one drop rule.” However, this is not true anymore, if it ever was. From my experiences I can tell you that we mulattos, at least those of us who have prominent European features, are not treated or accepted as black by either blacks or whites. Black identity has become increasingly restrictive over the past few decades, and those mixed race people who look more ambiguous or white have huge and in many cases insurmountable hurdles to cross in order to claim it. That’s one reason why many of us want to form a new, biracial identity. When asked what we are (which happens on a frequent basis), we want to be able to provide an answer that will not result in us getting laughed at. This may be difficult to understand for someone such as yourself who is not racially ambiguous and has not experienced difficulties in finding an in-group. Furthermore, we cherish our public figures (e.g. Mariah, Wentworth, … ). They have helped to make us more mainstream and acceptable to the wider culture which until recently has been quite hostile to us. We do not appreciate when they are forcibly appropriated by monoracials (black or otherwise) in order to bolster group pride.

The average Black in America has mixed blood. My background is East Indian & black but i’m proud to call myself Black. Being Black doesn’t mean you should have 100% Black blood. It means the Black part of you acknowledging a common bond with another person who has any quantity of Black blood. Muhammed Ali who considered himself Black found out he had an Irish great grandad. The beauty of this is that he honorably married his Black great grandmother. Just recently, Mumammed visited Ireland where his ancestral home town honored him. He acknowledged his Irish background but maintained pride in his African roots. Similarly when I watch Bollywood films, eat chappattis and rotis, I am akowledging my Indian roots while still being proud to be Black.

If biracials should have a separate group, the group would look ambiguous. There are people with two Black parents who end up with a mixed looking child. Or a biracial couple who have a child who ends up darker. If the government made a separate category for mixed people, the members skin tone and hair would look similar to the rest of the population that would be considered Black. Then, if instead to have a separate group based on skin tone would take us backward to the “paper bag” and “pencil” in the hair test. As Blacks, we all will have different experiences, it’s not smart to separate ourselves. Darker skinned Black women are ignored alot in the media, passed over by men, get told they aren’t as attractive as the lighter sisters but they would never want to be categorized into a separate racial group because of their unique experience within the Black community.

The problem though is that light complexioned biracials are considered non-black by blacks themselves.

I don’t find this to be the case anymore. The US is transitioning to a more Brazilian style of race relations. White people, at least the ones I know, will accept you if you look pretty similar to them and possess their cultural characteristics. I’ve completely assimilated into to the white social sphere (i.e. socially, romantically) even though I’m of partial African ancestry.

However, I don’t think he would get highly upset at Abagond putting him under Black since he he does have strong Black identity from his father side of the family. Anyways, he is fine and he is mine. This list was indeed strange and there are many implications of why the list turned out the way it did. Many of the Black woman posters did discuss alot of Black males on here and their attraction to them and discussed more on the Black male celebrities. So I don’t think this list was a refection solely on their taste. This poll definitely reached out to the masses outside of this blog LOL

frustrated guy,
Their was even more ambiguity in the south during Jim Crow. This is when those who had a white parent, who could have passed didn’t and those that had mixed ancestry where you could not tell if they were black still chose to live black.
Maybe there are some black people in some remote part of Alabama or Mississippi who aren’t mixed, but I doubt it. Color doesn’t determine it, look at siblings where one is dark and, the other light, with the same parents.
The one drop rule is still evident; let someone in certain areas admit they were passing and see what happens to their career. You will note that most admissions come at the end of life.
Yes there is colorism in the black community, which originated from slavery. The white man’s way of keeping us divided. It also exist because many during slavery, like you, think their should be a separate category. Perhaps if America had been a Spanish colony.
It doesn’t really matter how you define yourself, you will get treated as you are perceived. If you grew up black, regardless of color, you were accepted, even if you were subjected to taunts of colorism. What would piss black folk is if you denied your blackness, regardless of what color you are,if you came from the black community.
Blackness is culture, state of mind, and not genetically definable. It may be only 20 or so genes out of 23,000 that determines what we look like.

Very true. Many biracials are not perceived as black by anyone, including blacks, and that’s an important reason why many of us wish to identify as biracial. There’s alot of talk on this blog about white racism. It definitely exists. Forget “institutional racism.” I think older black-white biracial people like myself have probably received more overt racism from whites than anyone else, especially during the school years. However, we suffer attacks from the black side too. For instance, Spike Lee, speaking through Wesley Snipes’ character, made some nasty comments about mixed kids at the end of Jungle Fever. McGruder’s Boondocks cartoon is also notable for its slanders against biracials. Under these conditions, we cannot comfortably identify as black. In addition, white people seem to be much friendlier to us than they used to be, so it’s easier to identify as mixed race now.

Wonderful results. Fyi, approximately 80% of all African Americans are of mixed ancestry. The idea of race just like beauty is subjective. That total includes myself. My mother is a Afro-Latina from Cuba. On her side of the family they have relatives whose skin color ranges that of Johnny Depp to Djimon Hounsou. They live in here in the states. Some live in Cuba while others left for the islands for St. Kixx and Jamaica. My granddad on my father’s side is a “White” American and my grandmother is African American. The diversity of skin color on my father side is similar to my mother’s side. I am African American because that is what America has labeled me. I am human because that is what I am.
There is no such thing as “mixed blood”, lol. In addition, race isn’t real because biologically there is only one race, the human race. Race is a social tool and a recent creation that was used to justify slavery. Race now is used to separate the powerless majority and retain power with the powerful minority. The old divide and conquer scam. It is such a waste of time to be a racist. Dating is like picking out a great place to eat. Who wants the same old menu when you can enjoy a buffet. Moreover, this list is a buffet. Yummy!

Something definitely changed during the course of the 90s. I think it might have something to do with the large number of mixed race celebrities that popped up during the decade.
“Fyi, approximately 80% of all African Americans are of mixed ancestry.”
Yes, yes. We all know that. We also know that race is socially constructed. But the point is that alot of people are socially constructed as being of mixed or undetermined race, preventing them from being fully accepted by any group.

I don’t know about this frustrated guy. I think some White people are more accepting of mixed race individuals not because of them being mixed raced but because it’s another strategy of them being more comfortable in their racism. You having a White parent is better than you having two Black parents because they feel that they are not “really talking to a Black person” it makes them feel comfortable. So how is that really accepting of mixed raced people?
Another example of this is Wentworth Miller. Wentworth Miller experiences mostly second-hand racism and second-hand White privilege. Wentworth admits that he does not experiences the Black male experiences of racism [because he does not look Black] but he does experience second-hand racism where White people are very comfortable in expressing their deepest racist feelings towards Black people. He has a numerous occasions had to shut them down. However, due to his second-hand White privilege of looking more White in appearance, has allowed this type of treatment. Also I remember when I was on gossip site and the gossip site released family photos of his family. Particularly from his Black side. I’ve seen how his White fans tried to dissect his father side of his family to prove they are not really Black just so they can be comfortable in their own racism of blackness. Wentworth said his father is Black and they are on a quest to prove he really is not and made very idiodic arguments. Such as he is light skin so that he means he is not really Black. His father is an African-American man of mixed ethnic heritage like most African-Americans. I also heard some say “He looks more Syberian, he doesn’t look Black” LMAO excuses on supporting their racism of Black people. They can’t accept his Black hertiage so they dissect it to feel comfortable. So ask yourself? Are they really accepting of mixed race people OR they are tolerating mixed race people to use them to feel more comfortable in their racism?

People magazine is full of crap. When the lists for “50 Most Beautiful of, say, 2009” or “The Sexiest Man Alive” are put together, you see pretty much the same (white) celebrities or famous people over and over again. For example, Jennifer Aniston isn’t a bad looking woman, but personally, I don’t think she deserves top billing. And come on now. Julia Roberts?! She was on the “50 Most Beautiful” cover three times! What does that tell you? And then People magazine will throw in a few people of color for good measure. Got to hand it to so-called diversity. *sarcasm* What I really like about abagond’s “Gorgeous Men of the World” list is the variety of goodlooking men from various backgrounds. And that’s great! 😀

In terms of referring to someone who is mixed with black/white as black isn’t that technically correct, they’re not not black, they’re both black and white, so why is it incorrect to refer to someone as black if they are. If someone is japanese and korean, if you refered to them as korean, why would that be incorrect? I personally don’t like the terms black/white personally, they don’t make sense. No one is black and no one is white, we’re brown and most whites a pink or tan. Also there are black people who do not have a mixed background. According to my great great grandmother my family is one of them.

So, I am not the only one who noticed that.
Out of curiousity, is a “brotha” who is “chocolate” more authenthic, perhaps? I’m only asking because I notice a lot of black people seem to allude to this.
Of course, there are some black Americans who don’t have a mixed background. But they are a smaller minority. Yet they do exist, per your family.
I agree, MJ’s spirit remained beautiful even if his bafflingly altered face no longer was.

MNIMN,
A black man who is chocolate could be more mixed than one who look so called “mixed”. Not all people of mixed heritage look the same. Not all Africans look the same. Take Kenyans for example there are many tribes and each tribe may look different yet they are all Kenyans.

Damn, Dani, you broke it down perfectly! Whites will find a way to hold on to their racism in any way possible.
I also remember that particular site that released photos of Wentworth’s black relatives. The reaction was very telling.
Yes! wasn’t it pathetic seeing some of the White commenters try to hide their racism by dissecting his Black father’s heritage like that? When some of the people called them out on it they get largely defensive. Most of the time it’s his Black fans like me who do it LOL. I mean just the mention of his father being Black held so much of a uncomfortable feeling. This is almost as pathetic as a journalist who tried to break Obama’s ethnic heritage. Some journalist said Obama is 50% White [Yeah since White people are fully white by appearance *saracasm* As you can see his White mother’s DNA is never really dissected] 44% Arab[Yeah because of the terroist attacks against him][6% African just to piss Black people on him “not really being Black”] LMAO yeah White people are more friendlier and accepting mixed race or bi-racial individuals.
Even though I am a perfectly hetereosexual male, I think one is blind if they can’t see that Michael Jackson, pre-1985 was a stunningly good looking person.
In fact, the entire Jackson family was/is stunningly beautiful.
If anyone doubted the beauty of traditionally black features, all they had to do is look at the Jacksons. Before the plastic surgery of course.
Yes! I was on some forum that posted all the Jackson photos [pre-surgery] and I was so amazed of how beautiful the Jackson family was. Rebbie was a bad chick man lol. Michael was so beautiful and it was a shame that he never saw it. However, Jackie Jackson was fine!
Do “Eurocentric standards of beauty” affects how women of color view the beauty of men, in the same way that it affects their male counterparts’ view of female beauty? This list suggests that it does.
This is a very good question. I’m going to say no and yes. Now for me no. I tend to find find people attractive through bone structure. When people say, “I find dark skin or light skin men or women” attractive or “I love blue or brown eyes attractive on men or women” It’s usually oversimplifying beauty. I’m going to give you an example. This girl I know told me she found dark skin men to be attractive. I asked her okay do you find Flava Flave to be attractive because he is dark skin? she said, “Hell no” lol. So when people point out specific phenotype traits to be attractive they are oversimplifying it because those specific traits that some people find to be attractive is not always what you are going to find attractive in every individual who has that trait. So when I look at people it’s bone structure and eye shape. More so than skin color, eye color, hair color etc. Now do I believe that some women find their preferences through the eurocentric beauty standards? Yes! I’ve heard some women say that they want to procreate with a White man so their children will be prettier. Very ridiculous and self-loathing especially for a person of color. However, I still believe that eurocentric beauty standards tends to be placed upon women more than men since men are more visual than women. That doesn’t mean women don’t like no sloppy looking man, however, I think a man that is provider is more on top of their list than looks.

I believe that a chocolate brotha is considered more authentic because their dark skin exhibits more masculinity and they tend to fulfill the “tall dark and handsome” description. Which is why colorism is different from men and women. I tend to believe that is ridiculous. I do not understand why a skin color exhibits a personality trait or a certain behavior.

Exactly. Black men are considered tall, dark and handsome. Dark skin is considered masculine while light skin is considered feminine. Which is why black women, especially dark skinned black women, suffer so much. People shouldn’t be so attached to skin color when they think of masculinity and feminity.

Leavemethinking,
I posed that question because you noted that the other black men on the list “looked obviously mixed” besides one “chocolate brotha” who I guess doesn’t…because of skin color alone?
But you’re absolutely right, skin color doesn’t really tell you much about someone’s actual historial background. Considering the fact that it’s extremely common amongst black folks, whether multi-generationally mixed (like most black Americans) or pure-blooded (like most Native Africans) to have a TJ Holmes and an Idris as siblings. And they’d share the same genetical background, of course.
Dani,
Good point. Except I don’t think South Asian women are seen as “less beautiful” here in the States. And like black folks, the vast majority of them are pretty dark. Why is that I wonder? Why is the darkness of South Asians an non-issue? But it’s such a loaded one for people of SS African descent?

I agree with you dark men are stereotyped as more masculine. I thought he meant more genetically black. The reason why I voted for Morris Chestnut is because he is good looking to me. Now you know why? LMAO see South Asian women are stereotyped as having that "good hair" they are considered to have the most desired hair texture. Not only that their facial features are considered to not be as broad like Black women. Most of all they are not Black to many LOL. So that alone saves some South Asian women of not being unattractive to many. Although many South Asian women are dark skin and can be as dark as many Black women but they do still get a pass of being attractive. Shoot it was a Black woman that mistaken me and another South Asian student of looking alike. That was strange. I've been compared to looking like another Black woman but not a South Asian woman.

Oh Ji Ho is a cutie but I would choose Russell Wong over him.
Barack Obama is handsome but the most beautiful man in the world? I don’t know about that. Plus he reminds me too much of my Uncle Frank lol
Johnny Depp has always been a cutie so he can stay. As well as Keanu Reeves.
Will Demps can stay that body and that smile. Oh yes Idris is so sexy he can stay. I love his british accent and his eyes.
James Franco and Paul Newman? That was a big surprise. Out of all of the White men they make it? Not even Brad Pitt made the list he makes everyone list. I think Paul Newman and James Franco are attractive but not the most beautiful men.
TJ Holmes and Boris Kudjo are cuties pies but I don’t know they would not have made my list for some reason.
I do agree Morris Chestnut, Blaire Underwood, and Denzel Washington should’ve been on the list because they are fine. Hell even Derek Luke and my new boos Nate Baker and Mehcad Brooks.
As far as White men Matty boy [Matthew McConaughey] should’ve made the list. I watched “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and was so amused of how fine he is.
Oh yeah Nigel Barker is sexy. I watch ANTM because of him and Tyra goofy self lol

Exactly. It’s all perception when it comes to what looks “mixed”. As well as who is “dark skinned”. (Obama, for example, IS dark skinned to many non-blacks). And yes, like we both have pointed out, three of the five “brothas” are products of interracial parentage.
Dani,
Your personal list reads more like who I hear everyday black women commonly cite as “good looking men”. LOL. I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m stereotyping but it seems more realistic.
Abagond,
Of course, skin color is a huge deal on the entire continent of Asia. Can’t emphasize that more. Yet, I just find it interesting that it doesn’t seem to matter how dark non-black “ethnics” are in the U.S. Not as much as it matters for black people. It goes to show you that this has less to do with “actual skin shade” and more to do with the “overall connotation of being black”.

About Wentworth Miller:
I never said it’s a bad thing he had a black father. I never said he was white. I just said I didn’t know he wasn’t white; in fact, he looks pretty white to me. I see guys like that on the street all the time (ok, he’s better looking perhaps, but there’s nothing in his appearance that made me think he wasn’t white). He isn’t really my type, but he is a handsome man.
Of course he should be proud of his family. I guess it was horrible for him to listen all those racist jokes, and people trying to prove he wasn’t black, etc.
Well, in my mind, any person whose parents are interracial couple is biracial or mixed. But that’s just me. I understand it’s different in America and I understand there’s one drop rule.
Johnny Depp
And Johnny Depp isn’t really “white” white. The highest ranking white man n this list is, who? James Franco? Paul Newman?
The voting and results
I was surprised by the results. It was really different than nominations, and I guess that’s because demographic was different, and we had Oh Ji Ho fans voting…
So yes, I think splitting voters by race is a good idea here. It would be interesting to see the difference between black, white and Asian woman’s lists.
For example, here’s my Top 10 list:
1. Johnny Depp
2. Blair Underwood
3. Bob Marley
4. Idris Elba
5. Barack Obama
6. Oh Ji Ho
7. Boris Kudjoe
8. Maxwell
9. TJ Holmes

I think Pitt, Clooney and the others you named are kind of “cliche”. The mainstream media pushed them as “sexy”, not the people themselves. Most white female starlets, Halle Berry, J.Lo and the like, would be their female counterparts in that regard.
I am also surprised that Denzel didn’t make the final cut. In an actual list, he defintely would. Next to LL Cool J, he’s the man who I’ve heard women “drool” over the most in my life experience.

I love when people try to tell me the definition of “blackness” and how some of us have been brain washed. African Americans come in all shades. Skin color should not determine if someone is less authentic than you are. Ms. Angela Davis happens to be a fair skin African American woman. Does that make her less authentic? Clarence Thomas is a dark skin male does that make him authentic than Angela Davis? Who needs white sheets when we have people of color trying to authenticate each other.

I have always wondered what it is about black blood that makes it ‘stronger’ than other blood.
for example I am three quarters white and roughly a quarter or so black yet often talking to friends in america they refer to me only as ‘black’.. what is it about being black that makes that quarter more important than the other three quarters?
growing up as a child partially in italy and partially in africa, it was not like this. In both places I was nearly always thought of as ‘white’ (because it makes up the majority of my ancestry and my apperance) or failing that mulata.
please do not misinterpret what I am saying.. I have no probelm with being called black.. I am very proud of my black ancestry but I sometimes get confused about why the one drop rule makes sense.
hope my comment makes sense if people can shed the light on this I would apperciate it

Race isn’t a biological fact, it’s a social construct. There’s no such thing as “black” or “white” blood to begin with. However, genes that are responsible for physical features often associated with black race (dark skin, hair colour and often texture) are dominants. Which means child whose parents are interracial couple will probably look more like his black parent. Sometimes, he (or she) won’t. (We talked about Wentworth Miller, for example).
On the other hand, there’s “one drop rule” in America. I don’t know much about it, but it looks like you’re considered to be black (and just black) if you look like at least some of your ancestors were black.

I once had Anne Curry and Bipasha Basu on my list of the world’s most beautliful white women. They looked white enough to me – but to white commenters they were not “pure” Europeans and therefore had to be removed. Wow.

I guess the fact that I look very mediterranean played a part, people are usually surprised when I tell them my i’m part black.
In fact I remember with some americans, when I first met them they presumed I was just full Italian and they ‘treated’ me like that. However as soon they found out I’m part black they first start freaking out..”omy goodness this cannot be true etc.”. But then when they accepted it (after I showed them a picture of my grandmother, because of course they ‘needed’ proof!) suddenly I was no longer Italian, simply black.
And they started to ‘treat’ me like a black person and apply stupid incorrect stereotypes to me.

Native American activist Ward Churchill had a good take on this: blacks were property. Whites wanted to maximize their property. Indians were property-holders whose property whites wanted, so their numbers needed to be minimized.
This is why you have a one-drop rule for blacks and a minimum blood quantum for native americans in the same society.

I haven’t read all of the comments, but I don’t know if the breakdown of lists by race would yield much useful information. I don’t think Black women have a “type” anymore than White women do. I know I had a really hard time picking a favorite, but my vote went for Wentworth Miller.
I think Top 10 lists are problematic in that the results always come down to exposure, especially since the selection pool is essentially infinite. Some of the men in the nomination thread were really good looking, but I had never heard of them, so even if I thought they were fine I was less likely to cast my vote that way than for someone I’ve been exposed to through popular media. The only pseudo-accurate way (and even that label is a stretch) to measure the relative ideas of attractiveness of people who frequent this blog (even defining the voting pool is difficult) would be to present a list of 30 men or so and leave those as the only options for voting. But even that would be biased by men Abagond picked (even if he picked them out of a hat there wouldn’t be an equal chance for every male to end up in the selection pool). Sorry I’m running off on a Stats tangent–the moral of the story is that attempts to dissect this list are pretty much moot because who ended up on top has nothing to do with attractiveness (though I think Oh Ji Ho is a cutie). 🙂

This must be technically incorrect, as his father was a Hawaii-born American and his parents divorced in 1966. He got American citizenship at birth. Where he was born and where he grew up is irrelevant.
In order for him not to have it now, he must have officially renounced it.
Now, in order for him to transmit US citizenship to HIS children, his must establish a physical presence test in the USA for a minimum period of time after the age of 14. Since he lives in the USA, this should not be an issue either, and he can automatically transmit US citizenship to his children, regardless of the nationality of the mother, where the child is born and where the child grows up.

As to Keanu Reeves, Jefe is correct, Keanu was born in the US state of Hawaii. He did, however, grow up in Canada and, consequently, considers himself to be Canadian.
Mel Gibson, as I recall reading, was also born in the US, but was relocated at 14 years of age to Australia by his father, who did so as a way of enabling his sons to dodge the Vietnam war draft. As far as I know, Mel Gibson is an American who considers himself Australian, as I’m not sure if he ever became a naturalized Australian or not.

I think it’s time to do this again. People Magazine compiles their list every year. You should update your most beautiful men and women every year, too. And you should open it up to different eras. 1965 Sidney Poitier is far superior to 2012 Keanu Reeves…and I’m a fan of Keanu’s looks.

Sorry, but I NEVER said that Keanu was born in the US state of Hawaii. I said that he father was, and therefore Keanu was a US citizen at birth REGARDLESS of where he was born by virtue of having an American father.
Keanu was born in Beirut, Lebanon and grew up in Canada, but was born to an American father (and therefore, an American since birth). In order to transmit US citizenship to any child HE might have, he has to establish residency in the USA, which I believe he has.

Oh, my apologies, Jefe! I should have double checked before I posted that comment. You’re correct in that Keanu Reeves
is an American by virtue of his father.
The point that I was trying to make (though rather clumsily) is that Keanu was born with American citizenship regardless as to which nationality he chooses to identify. I’ve known for a while that his father is Hawaiian and, now that you mention it, I also recall reading somewhere that Keanu himself was not born in the States but in Lebanon.
