Davida pointed this one out to me: an ad for Verizon Hub showing a black man calling his white wife – but watch carefully or you might miss it!

no seriously – he is SUPER hot….probably why I was watching the add so closely to begin with.

That seems like more of an oversight or a default photo (similar to when you buy a picture frame and a models picture is inside). I don’t know if I would read that much into it.
He is cute, though.

that woman wasnt white she was light skinned.

Jasmine – I assume you ment light skinned POC and not white? Why do you say this?

“Light-skinned” means light-skinned black in most cases. I like the idea of it being a default picture.

I agree with Jasmine. I think she was a light-skinned black woman.

Dedabets why? why does it have to be his white wife? What difference does it make? What compelled you to point that out? Petty much?

Light-skinned makes the most sense: it would be less surprising than a white wife and would show up better than a dark-skinned wife (because it is a small picture of a face against a black background).

white women want it to be a white woman because they want to believe all the black men want them. they want to believe they are better than black women. they sit up and listen to the stupid stuff black men say about black women, they dont know those same black men come back to black women and talk garbage about them!! the only difference is black women dont want to hear that gossiping mess!!

Are you serious..? I can barely make out the guy’s wife in the ad. Could be Latina, Middle Eastern, White, Black with lighter skin tone.. etc.. who gives a crap..?

Jasmine was kind of blunt, but I agree with where she’s coming from.
Despite what they want you believe, the vast majority of black men, American or not, are not with a white woman and, SUPRISE SURPRISE, aren’t interested in “switching over”!
Also, more realistically, white women throw themselves at black men.
Anyone who sees how many white females react to a black athlete, for example, can attest to this truth. That they try to flip it around to make it seem as if black women are so undesirable that their “own” men don’t want them sickens me. It’s BS.
About the ad: The wife’s picture was on screen for a split second so it was hard to decipher her face, let alone her race! LOL. Just by reviewing the clip, the woman doesn’t look particularly black, but not white either. She could be a Latin American type. Who knows? Who cares?

Strange fruit – I thought she looked a bit like me and there for I thought she was white. She could be hispanic too. I suggested the video to abagond because I saw on the blog about BW /WM IR relationships Part II a comment about someones new coffee maker having an IR couple on it and just as I read that comment the verizon hub add came on…Therefor my mind was already geared to see an IR couple.. In fact = given abagonds most recent topics – I am MORE likely to see IR couples everywhere – possibly even looking for them.
I asked Jasmine why couldnt it be a white women because i was curious. A good ad campaign enables the viewer to put themselves in the add and see themselves using it. So me seeing myself in it means they did a good job – if a latin or black women sees that photo and thinks it relates to them – again – good marketing work. Also – she seemed to be upset that I thought it might be a white womne and I was wondering why – and I got my answer.
I dont think its a stock or default photo – you dont have have stock photos on your cell phone…you take pictures of a person and associate that picture with their number – thats the same idea here.
“white women want it to be a white woman because they want to believe all the black men want them.”
i actually dont think all black men want white women…to say all X wants all of Y is silly. i think some BM prefer WW – some prefer BW – and some just like WOMEN. they are allowed their preferences as is everyone else. I know guys who only like asian women. I know women who only date nerdy skinny tech types with commitment issues….
“Anyone who sees how many white females react to a black athlete”
most females react to any male athlete that way too. They are excellent specimen of man hood – beautiful artwork we like to look at. I cant see I liked a black athlete because he was black…I liked his biceps, and traps and shoulders and back – and that looks the same on a white athlete. I like good looking men; be they white, black, hispanic and asian etc…
“Also, more realistically, white women throw themselves at black men.” a more accurate statement is men and women of all races throw themselves at each other. To say WW do all the pursuing is silly, as is it wrong to say BMs are the aggressors solely.
I went to a bachorlorette party last night. I dont go to clubs much since I am married. But -last night I got to observe men and women in that weird mating dance called hooking up. Black men certainly didnt have a problem approaching women of all races. Latin men were there also approaching women of all demographics. As were the arabic, filipino and asian men. And white men – well they mostly hung out in groups – unless they brought a women with them. Honestly if this is how white men court – I see caucasins become the minority group pretty quickly.

I agree with you Mynameismyname regarding Black men dating/marrying women. In Dayton, Ohio, where I live and work, the majority of Black men are with Black women despite considerable mixing among the races here. The idea that Black men dating/marrying other races has been blowned out of proportion by mainstream media.

Thanks for the link. Here is one paragraph from it about casting black men with women in terms of race:
And as for “Hitch,” casting involved a great deal of controversy. A white woman, producers felt, would be too controversial, but a black woman would have rendered it automatically a “black movie” and therefore, hurt sales. In the end, Eva, a beautiful carmel-colored Latin beauty, it was determined, would be a safe choice as she would likely appeal to both whites and blacks.

Dedabets, some black men prefer white women, the majority of black men prefer black women. There is just no getting around that. Just as how some white men prefer black women but the majority prefers white women. I don’t totally agree with what Jasmine said but I can definitely see where she is coming from.

Strangefruit – I see your point- it is natural to prefer a person coming from the same culture as you. You have common ground…and you will be able to share this with your children.
I just didnt agree with Jasmine that white women do all the pursuing of black men.
Abagond – I noticed that paragraph as well…the careful dance they must have done to be “diverse” without exluding any one group or offending anyone.

i just think some men like to complain about women. According to my husband – the men at his work spend most of their time complaining about their wives. He says he doesnt do that…but I dont believe him.
I think A man will complain about X women to Y women…and then go to Y women and complain about X….come to think about it – I observed this behavior in high school girls as well. Maybe its human nature and has nothing to do with Black Vs. White?

Are you referring to Jasmine’s comments about black men and white women when she said:
“they sit up and listen to the stupid stuff black men say about black women, they dont know those same black men come back to black women and talk garbage about them”
My experience has been when someone persistently complains about other people behind their backs (regardless of race..) then that same person is very likely to complain about me behind my back. I tend to keep those of people at a distance. When it gets specific to race and gender (as I have encountered with some Asian women who complain about Asian men..) I try to make inquiries as to why they hold these beliefs and go from there. (I’ve had a few finally admit they were testing me for anti Asian prejudice..)

There are black men who bad-mouth black women, there are those who date mainly white women, but on the whole very few black men wind up marrying white women, only like one in a hundred.

TO Abagond:
From your figures before on the first marriage thread (re: white men/black women) you indicated the out marriage rate for black men was around 8% (I think the bulk of those marriages are to white women..)
Would this mean that marriage rate for black males is only 12.5 out of hundred? That sounds quite low.

Yeah I worked with a (black man) fellow who would “hook up” with black women but insisted he would never marry one. He ended marrying a Filipina. I am not sure how common his attitude was. He had some very serious issues with a relative which I think may have fueled that decision.

Sorry, my mistake: the number is 2%, maybe as high as 2.4% (since I rounded it off), but that is looking at all black males age 15 and up, counting the unmarried ones and the dead ones.
That number comes from the post where I asked the opposite question to this one: why so few BLACK men marry black women. To answer that I had to account for all the black men who did not marry a black woman for one reason or another:

thank you abagond for backing up what i said about black men talking about black women like dogs to their open enemy. and their enemy LOVES IT!! she feels supeior, she will never never step in and defend the bw. we black women dont have low self esteem and we dont NEED to hear negative stuff about ww to make us feel good about ourselves.

I am at a loss as how to respond to this. I do come in and defend women in general and bw specifically. In my personal life I admist it is my wonderful BW friends who have taught me strength and how to stand up for myself. Often its the smack up the side of my head and they say “why do you let X person talk to you like that” and they are always right. I have learned to be a much stronger women because of two wonderful BWs…I am lucky to have them as friends.
