Sophia Loren (1934- ) is an Italian film actress. She starred in dozens of films in the 1950s and 1960s, both in Italy and in Hollywood. Most were between bad and forgettable, but what people remember is her amazing beauty.
According to this blog she is the most beautiful woman in the world. I have never seen a more beautiful woman than Sophia Loren at her height. Not in any other country nor in any other age. She is more beautiful than I thought a woman could be.
She was tall (1.74 m). Counting her shoes and her hair, she was taller than most men. She had large breasts and an hourglass figure with plenty of meat on her bones. She had high cheekbones, thick lips, black hair and, most of all, big, beautiful eyes.
“Beauty is how you feel inside,” she once said, “and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.”
Growing up she was so thin she was called Stick and Toothpick. “I was tall, thin, ugly and dark like an Arab girl. I looked strange. All eyes. No flesh on my bones.” Her figure filled out later: “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”
Jean Negulesco, who directed “Boy on a Dolphin”, said: “She was beautiful: she was big, big eyes, big nose, big lips, big body. It was Mother Earth in all her glory.”
She grew up in poverty and war in Naples without a father. Her beauty was the road out, the road to Rome where she and her mother went to become actresses. Her mother had once won a Greta Garbo look-alike contest.
In 1950 she came in second in the Miss Italy beauty contest. She tried her luck at becoming Miss Rome, but again came in second. But this time one of the judges who was taken by her beauty was a film producer – and her future husband: Carlo Ponti.
Ponti got her an acting teacher. He also wanted her to do something about her big nose and her big hips, but Loren, thankfully, thought better of it.
He put her in dozens of films and also broke her into Hollywood. He made sure she starred opposite the leading men of Hollywood of the time, like Cary Grant and Gregory Peck.
Loren was also in eight films by Vittorio de Sica and starred in over a dozen films opposite Marcello Mastroianni.
But despite all this, and despite her undoubted beauty and acting talent, she was never the box office hit that Elizabeth Taylor was. And, unlike Taylor or even Cary Grant, hardly anyone watches her films any more. No one was able to turn her beauty and acting into a fortune or even a film for the ages.
Because she was so beautiful many did not take her seriously as an actress. But her performance in De Sica’s “La ciociara” (1960) was so good that, even though it was all in Italian, she still won the Oscar for Best Actress in America.
Even at 71 she still looked great: good enough to make the Pirelli calendar for 2007 with the likes of Penelope Cruz and Hilary Swank.

“I was tall…ugly and dark like an Arab girl. I looked strange”. Wow! I cannot believe she just said how ugly and strange it was to be dark like an Arab girl! That’s not nice. I used to admire her, but uh un, not anymore, I lost respect for her on that one. Not cool.

Erica, I am not surprised she said this. Many times people say what they really mean without thinking. When they have time to think is when they carefully choose their words. Eva Longoria said something similar a few months back.

My wife knows full well what my taste in women is: “black women with pretty eyes and a big butt”, as she told a friend once. She is not one bit threatened by my taste in white women for the simple reason that she knows I do not chase white women and have never even been with one. She is more threatened by my taste in Asian women because I did once have an Asian girlfriend.

Check out Sophia Lorens niece Alessandra Mussolini. She’s an ex model, ex playmate, ex film actress and a famous Italian politician. Her grandfather, who she is very proud of being the spawn of, is an even more (in)famous Italian politician. 🙂

She was very beautiful. I had not realized that she looks like enough a black woman. We have the habit to look for the influence of the white features at the beautiful black women. The same principle is not applied for the black features and the white women.

Yeah, personally I’m not seeing the “amazing beauty” part. She’s pretty, no doubt, but “OMFG SHE’S HOT!” is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I see her.
Oh well, as they say, to each their own.

This woman IS and Was a true beauty. Incredible facial bone structure and features. Black or white, beauty is beauty, and Ms. Loren is an incredibly beautiful woman. All of you making comments about her being “ugly”, have absolutely no clue about what you are talking about. And, you all sound jealous and insecure about your own looks.

I met Sophia Loren a few times.
She is truly one without a second…….in combined areas of > exotic beauty, charm & poise, artistic skills, professionalism (she has been in front of the camera since 1950 and has been in over 100 films and international tv shows), longevity, wealth, fame., etc…. all exceptional attributes…… and at 77 she is still working and in demand.
All negative comments in this list, especially the quote about Dorothy Dandridge show ignorant, jealous or racist opinions.
How pitiful that so many are blind to anything of value…. who cares what they think.

I’m kind of shocked to see all these comments bashing Sophia Loren, but everyone is entitled to their opinions.
I personally find Dorothy Dandridge prettier than Sophia, but I disagree with the people calling Sophia “ugly”. She obviously had something special, a certain star quality that was recognized by those who made her famous…and it didn’t hurt that she had a curvy figure with big boobs. I wouldn’t call her gorgeous, but you can’t deny that she was quite striking in her youth with dark hair, olive skin, hazel eyes, and full lips. She also was a very good actress. It’s just a shame that her work isn’t more recognized.
As to whether her comment was racist, I agree with Shani. I don’t believe she intended to insult Middle Eastern women…she was describing her own appearance as a teenager before she “blossomed”. I could say the same about myself because I was very thin and awkward-looking until I grew into my looks. Her choice of words could have been better, though. Most Middle Eastern women are stunning, IMO, including the ones in oppressive countries that have to be completely covered at all times. They take care of themselves and their hair/makeup is usually on point.
And I don’t think she meant “dark” as an insult either. Remember that this is an Italian woman, Southern European, and to most “white” people her complexion would be considered dark….it’s all relative.

@Bulanik…I believe it was a rather careless remark, but not intended to be malicious. I don’t think she views Middle Eastern women (lumped together as “Arabs”) as inherently ugly, but I think she was more referring to her appearance as being Moorish/Sicilian in terms of skin color, hair, etc. She does look like some Lebanese women I know…they have the classic Roman profile with the “hook” nose and they are all very striking. They could easily be Italian if I didn’t know their surnames.
And nearly every biography or autobiography on Sophia describes her as being extremely thin, shy, and awkward until she was about 14. Then it was like she developed overnight and the wolf-whistles wouldn’t stop. I believe her dark brunette beauty added an “exotic” touch that really helped her career.

I hated all her ‘Hollywood’ films… these I believe were done only for money.
Her real films are the Italian ones… most notably –
L’Oro di Napoli (Gold of Naples),
Ieri, Oggi & Domani ( Yesterday, Today and Tommorrow),
La Ciociara (Two Women) * won Academy Award for this,
Matrimonio Italiano (Marriage Italian Style),
A Special Day………..
……these are her best work….. mostly under the master director Vittorio DeSica.

If you had seen Sophia in “The Millionairess” (1960) (with the late Peter Sellers, directed by Anthony Asquith) as I did at the tender age of 13, you would understand why she has been to me (throughout 53 years of life since then) the epitome of sophisticated, elegant womanhood. Surely the most beautiful, certainly the most desirable, woman between 1957 and say 1977?
And she remains a phenomenon.

All I can say about this write up which she never said anything about being dark like an Arab girl! You would have to tell the article in where you found that comment! Second these comments being made about how she’s not this or that seems to come out of jealousy! Sophia was an Italian period! She married a famous Italian filmmaker Carlo Ponti who helped her get her start in Italian cinema! She knew she wasn’t a barbie but she didn’t care, she loved her facial features and her voluptuous body because she was proud of herself in a world where women hate themselves and overly critical of their flaws! Well, Sophia’s flaws to some of her haters, were her money-making beauty trademarks to her and all those who knew her! She was and still is the epitome of beauty and class! Her films were not forgettable as this writer suggests, she won an Oscar for Two Women and she starred in a series of comedic hits alongside her good friend Marcelo Mastrionni I can’t spell his name but they made so much money together! Her first film was The Gold of Naples and that film made her a star! First off if you’re going to write about someone’s life please get it right! And comparing her looks to black women is like comparing how an orange looks to an avocado, two different ethnicities two different ways of looking! Yeah she had an hour glass figure but so do a lot of women from various ethnic backgrounds and I’m glad Sophia to this day has maintained her beautiful figure til this day! The commenters on here you know, when you love yourself how you look, you don’t ever feel the need to put another person down! These women commenting on Sophia an actress that was born and acted in films well before they were even born, to me you know how do they look and why do they feel the need to put down a woman who doesn’t care what they have to say she’s made her money and lived her life so this hate is not noticed no one cares! But I just feel these women commenting they don’t like what they see in the mirror, they wish they looked different and that’s sad that they waste all their time on throwing shade at a woman who people thought was beautiful you know it’s jealousy and envy behind all these comments! That’s all it is and they really need to get over themselves seriously no one cares!
