This was the #1 pop song in the US 40 years ago today. Despite being a huge hit, it pretty much marked the end of the Disco Era (1975-80). Even then it sounded dated, sounding so last year. That it was recorded in 1979 might have something to do with that.
The song is about New York City written in Minneapolis, sung by Miss Black Minnesota 1976, Cynthia Johnson.

Lyrics:
Gotta make a move
To a town that’s right for me
Town to get me movin’
Keep me groovin’ with some energy
Well, I talk about it, talk about it
Talk about it, talk about it
Talk about, talk about
Talk about movin’
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Gotta make a move
To a town that’s right for me
Town to get me movin’
Keep me groovin’ with some energy
Well, I talk about it, talk about it
Talk about it, talk about it
Talk about, talk about
Talk about movin’
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to
Funkytown?
Take me, won’t you take me?
Take me, won’t you take me?
Take me, won’t you take me?
Take me, won’t you take me?
I wanna go to Funkytown
I wanna go to Funkytown
I wanna go to Funkytown
I wanna go to Funkytown

Sweet, sweet memories…
I’ve enjoyed to hear that song again.
It’s a testimony of the changes from that epoch to the present days of Information age that most of us in our corner of world didn’t had at those remote times, any idea who were the people behind that piece of rhythm, and also, being outside of the anglosphere not even could follow the verses composing its lyrics.
Now we can.
Thanks Abagond for bring back that joy!

This was and still is one of my all time favorite songs. Probably because it reminds me of my childhood and dancing to disco at school during our lunch breaks.
