VonDerritt Myers, Jr (1996-2014), a Black American high school student, was gunned down by a White police officer on October 8th 2014 in the Shaw neighbhourhood of southern St Louis, Missouri – just two months and ten miles (16km) from the Michael Brown shooting. Whether Myers was armed is in dispute.
The shooting led to a protest of 300. A hundred police officers in riot gear arrived to contain them, a helicopter flying overhead. Protesters damaged two police cars (broken window, broken tail light). The next night protesters burned a US flag.
The shooting is not as clear-cut as the Michael Brown case:
What the police said (at one point or other – they keep changing their story): Myers and three others were standing on a street corner when the officer drove by. Officer Unknown Name thought Myers might have a gun because of the way he adjusted his waistband. When he drove back, they ran. Myers was wearing a hoodie. The officer went after Myers. They may or may not have fought each other where Myers’s sweatshirt came off. Myers shot at the officer – either by turning and shooting or jumping out of the bushes and shooting or falling down and shooting. Myers’s gun jammed after three shots. The officer shot back 17 times, killing him. A black 9mm Ruger was recovered from the scene, which later changed into a silver 9mm Smith & Wesson.
What others say: He did not have a gun but a sandwich. He was not wearing a hoodie or a sweatshirt. Myers adjusted his waistband because he wore fashionably sagging pants. He was shot maybe 15 times.
Knowable facts (security camera video, photograph of the scene, Facebook pictures, medical examiner, etc): Myers was not wearing a hoodie or a sweatshit, his pants were sagging. He had just bought a turkey sandwich at Shaw Market and did not seem to have a gun at the time. He would not have had time to eat the sandwich, go home, change clothes and get a gun. There were no bushes at the scene to jump out of. There is an old Facebook picture of him with a silver 9mm Smith & Wesson. He was struck by seven or eight bullets, one to the head through the right cheek, killing him.
Myers was to stand trial in November on a felony gun charge from earlier in the year. He was a passenger in a car chased by police. At the end of the chase police found a gun which they said was his. At the time of his death he was out on bail wearing a monitoring device on his ankle so police could find him (common in such cases).
Officer Unknown Name is a 32-year-old White man who has been with the St Louis police six years. He was off-duty working as a neighbourhood security guard but was in his police uniform. He had fought in Iraq (three combat tours) as a Marine. He is now on administrative leave as the police investigate themselves.
