Rosewood was a Black town in the American state of Florida that was burned to the ground in 1923 by Whites. The state of Florida says eight died: six Blacks, two Whites. Survivors say between 40 to 150 died, nearly all of them Black. Several eyewitnesses saw a mass grave of Blacks with maybe 27 bodies, but to date it has not been found.
No Whites were ever charged with a crime, though the state did pay reparations in 1994.
Rosewood seemed to get along with the neighbouring White town of Sumner. But then one morning, on Monday January 1st 1923, Fannie Taylor, a White woman of Sumner, came out of her house screaming that a Black man had beat her up. Rumours cried rape.
Bloodhounds led the police and a gang of armed White men to Rosewood, to wagon tracks behind the house of Aaron Carrier. They tied his wrists to the back of a car and dragged him down the hard dirt road till he gave up the name of Sam Carter, a blacksmith. They tortured and lynched Carter – but did not think he was the rapist.
Sylvester Carrier, cousin of Aaron, gathered as many of his family as he could into his house to defend them. Whites found this threatening. They found him threatening: he was “too proud” and showed no fear of Whites. Unlike many Whites in Sumner, he lived in a big house and even owned a piano.
On Thursday night, January 4th, armed Whites gathered in front of his house. They shot his dog dead. When his mother told them to go home, they shot her dead. In the shoot-out that followed, Carrier killed two White men and wounded several others. News of Blacks killing Whites spread and by morning hundreds of armed White men were pouring into Rosewood, many of them Klan.
By now most Blacks had fled into the nearby woods and swamps. They would never return.
When Whites entered Sylvester Carrier’s house they found his mother’s body and what they presumed was his body. They destroyed everything in the house, the piano too, and then set his house on fire.
One by one, they burned down every house, every church, every building. As Rosewood burned, they rang its church bells. They shot dead any Blacks they found.
The only thing they did not burn down was the house and general store of John Wright. He was White.
Wright was hiding women and children. In the middle of the night, he got them on the train to Gainesville.
John and William Bryce, the brothers who ran the train, did not understand the hatred against Blacks. At night they rolled their train slowly through the dark woods calling out, taking any women and children on board. They did not let on men for fear that Whites would attack the train and kill them all.
One survivor had worked for Fannie Taylor. She saw the man who had beat her up: a White man she was having an affair with.

It seems that even when black are nowhere near whites, liven in a separate town, city, state. whites still aren’t satisfied, the fact that black people exist, may be prospering or not, doesn’t matter. A crime happens in their town, they blame black people.
White people’s main purpose is to make the lives of black people miserable, despite being miserable from the time, blacks were brought to America as slaves.

This is such so tragic, yet many whites would deny this happened. Just like they are clueless and in denial today about the existence of racism. Good post. Here was a black community working and thriving and living independent of whites and taking care of their own affairs, and some dirty cow lies and says a black man attacked her, when it really was a white man. One evil white woman’s lies destroyed a whole community and brought death to hundreds of innocent black people. Shaking My Head. So very tragic.

You did a post before about sundown towns – mostly in the Midwest and Northeast – where they kept out blacks.
It might be interesting to learn about all black towns that were set up post-Reconstruction. You can find them scattered in the area from Maryland to Eastern Texas.
In the South it was different. They often set up these all black towns on the fringes of white towns, or they set up all black towns on the outskirts of white plantations in rural areas to keep them separate from whites. It was easier to disenfranchise voters that way and also keep them from receiving state or county money and from receiving state services.
Many of these towns still exist. I have been to several of them.

I watched a movie on Rosewood when I was in kindergarten or first grade and I was appalled at the destruction that racists did to that town. Seriously in those days, all a White woman had to do is call rape and Whites went destroying Black towns and cities. This reminds me of what happened at Black Wall Street too. Incidents like this show me that Whites need us more than we need them.
When will our men learn that it is better to leave White women alone?
And when will Black people stick together and build their own communities apart from Whites?

Sorry Adeen, I am a woman and I have been sexually molested, but even I know that crying rape does not mean a rape has taken place, so saying black men must leave white women alone is irrelevant. Moreover, it just perpetuates the notion that it is wrong to find love or sex across races. It is just difficult and has been known to be very dangerous, and that’s one of the 10000 reasons the world needs to change.
This post was one of the most painful readings. Thank God for the few acts of kindness which prevented complete annihilation, which could have meant nobody left to tell the tale of this awful pogrom.

The Rosewood and the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 both had the same precursors: WHITE WOMEN! These are saliently sorry ass historical accounts of Amerikkka! Both incidents preyed upon erroneous information that essentially turned black men of the community into marauding predators that had to be stopped at all cost. Any white woman that was SUPPOSEDLY violated had to be avenged, even without one iota of evidence with death and unabated destruction of black bodies and black communities. This type of group pathology amongst whites has subsided, but this sickness still exists with quite a few of them today (conjure up Trayvon Martin).
Therefore, I implore all blacks to read the Bible, history books and psychology books. These books will give you a more full description of who you’re dealing with when interacting with MOST whites. Perhaps after education ourselves, only then will we (blacks) as a persecuted group, truly unite!

it is interesting how when I read about things like this there is always a low estimate with one or two digit numbers, then a higher estimate in the hundreds or thousands that witnesses said they saw.
someday the grave may be found, they have a grave site that has been dug up in a Mississippi campus with about 1,000 graves.

Many of these White women back in the day lied that they were raped by Black men too. They didn’t want to be found out that they were sleeping with Black men behind everyone’s backs. So they can protect their image of being pure and good. Many of these White women’s claims led to incidents like Rosewood and Black Wallstreet. That is my point.
Why can’t White women admit to their part in oppressing Black people and maintaining White supremacy? They are just like White men, only they have hair and a vagina.

And sometimes these bad ass white women were victims themselves: having a black lover, and having to pretend they had been raped for fear of retaliation from the Oh-so-ready-to-cast-the-first-stone white males. About 20 years ago, there was a really sarcastic, but also very interesting article in EBONY “In my next life, I want to be a white male”., retracing all the stuff you were able to do if you were a white male, and oppressing one’s woman (as well as everyone non male and white) was one of them.

I believe that many White men and White women have played a role in the oppression of Black people in the past and I am expressing that. Rosewood and Black Wallstreet were started by White women accusing Black men of raping them. White men also had a hand in oppressing Blacks but on a much larger scale than White women.
Why can’t you accept that? I am not looking for reparations here. I just wished that Whites in America today acknowledged the wrong doings of their ancestors and tried to fix things to better the future.

I do accept it. I just meant white men created a network of oppression starting at home. Women ahd no rights, children had no rights and they grew up to believe that if you do not oppres others, you end up being oppressed, and that’s how oppression of other races, ethnies and cultures was perpetuated. I see that happening in some non-white communities too, this rage for power which is the mark of the weak, and it pains me: we do not have to copy them, if we do, they have won.

As I read more on rosewood I think a lot of resentment was behind the escalation of the situation. Rosewood was a black middle class town. They were doing good and living well. Blacks owned businesses and such. Sumner on the other hand was full of poor whites. From the movie Rosewood it seemed as if the woman was happy for the attention and openly seeking it. The problem was that she did not truly care or realize the ramification of the matter until her long time servant was killed in the matter and then and only then did she tell her husband the truth. Though the messed up part of it all was that all the men in the mob already knew or had the idea that one of the men she was cheating with beat her.

Whenever I see reference to the old canard of “pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps”, I think of the fairy tale on which it is based, ie, the one where a little boy achieves the impossible by hoisting his body into the air — and defeating the laws of gravity — simply by pulling upwards on the straps of the boots on his feet.
It always strikes me as strange that any person would describe the eventual financial upward mobility of his white / European immigrant ancestors to the US, a country where white racism has reigned supreme for centuries, as somehow having been (or in any way as needing to be) achieved through impossible means ….

Have you ever seen the documentary Banished? I read an online summary but haven’t watched it yet. The film chronicles the historical pattern of White mobs driving Black Americans out of their homes/communities and thus taking their abandoned properties. While the events profiled occur pre-Rosewood, I can’t help but wonder if the town was a casualty of this racial cleansing the documentary describes.
According to the details in the below link:
“Between 1860 and 1920 hundreds of U.S. counties expelled their black residents. The pattern was depressingly similar in almost all cases. The counties tended to have small, defenseless black populations. A black man was rumored to have assaulted a white woman, was lynched and then white rioters attacked black neighborhoods with guns and firebombs. Few black property owners had time to sell their properties nor dared return to repossess them. Whites could then illegally assume ownership of them. African Americans not only lost their hard-won homes, farms and businesses, but saw their communities and families dispersed and their very right to exist violated. The film reveals that even one hundred years later, these racially cleansed communities tend to remain all-white bastions of separatism, sometimes harboring active klaverns of the Ku Klux Klan. Another California Newsreel release, Trouble Behind documents the same process in Corbin, Kentucky, home of Kentucky Fried Chicken.”

I found out a few years ago that I have relatives that were behind the making of the movie Rosewood. I’m still shocked to realize this.
Anyway, it’s history like this that it reflected today. Whenever an interracial (black-on-white) crime is reported, some subsequent reports mention how there’s racial tension within that area. In modern times, there are blacks who fear of racial backlash. Even if it’s proven to be a racial hoax, and there have been repercussions, the damage has been done already.
Certain people, I won’t mention any names, love to list black-on-white crime article links for no other core purpose but to guilt trip blacks and prove that racism against whites is the new norm. Yet, historical or contemporary racism against blacks by whites is refuted by those same people. Again, I won’t mention names, but you all know who I mean.
I find it troubling, for lack of a better word, that this white woman that caused the destruction of Rosewood would rather lie to protect her abuser than tell the truth. Then again, it shows that whiteness is more important than justice and truth.

Well said but many people don’t understand the way institutionalized racism works. Institutionalized racism affects many Blacks and Latinos and even some Asians. This is type of racism is in institutions such as education, media outlets, housing, judicial system etc that holds Blacks, Latinos and some Asians back from having economic, social and political equality with Whites. You see Whites in America had a head start in education and opportunities for four centuries before Black Americans did. It wasn’t until legislations such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that changed things and let Blacks have more opportunities but that was only 50 years ago. I see the education and wealth gap between Blacks and Whites closing in America but SLOWLY.

@all: of course white women can be racists just as well as white men (I am not sure they are more racist, but then I am not a man, I am not American, I just know about white men thinking they could take liberties with a non-white girl when I was growing up). The point I was making is that they are also the underdog. All underdogs should unite to defeat the oppressors, but in the end, some choose to side with the oppressor, thinking it will get them some individual favours, or because oppression has robbed them of the ability to use their brains, or just because as was said in an other comment: white solidarity for them is stronger than justice.

Did she lie to protect her abuser or was it, in all actuality, to protect her own self and her reputation as well?
The case appears to be that, as a married woman displaying signs of apparent physical abuse, she would, of necessity, have to point the finger of blame at someone. For her to point it at a white lover, this would not only put her marriage in dire straits, it would also tarnish her reputation in her community as well.
Having others believe that her wounds, the type which probably could not be easily hidden or ignored, were the work of some nefarious Negro, and not that of a consensual but illicit lover, resolves these issues — leaving her as the virtuous Southern Belle, whose honor is in need of protecting.

From the movie (as I can’t attest to the real life woman) I always got the sense that it was all about her and never in the slightest that it was about protecting him. She was beaten pretty badly and how was she to explain this to her husband who believed she was a saint of a wife (even though all the men in town knew she was the town slut). The best explanation was that she was beaten for no reason, but it could not be by a white man because if he was white then:
1. The town would not care as much
2. She would be found out for the woman that she really is
She needed to protect both her virtue in the eyes of her husband and those people in town. What better escape goat than the phantom black man? They would be outraged and search for him and the people in town would feel sympathy for her. She regains the image of the virtuous white woman taken over by the savage black beast.

There is an old Hollywood movie (silent even, I think) in which a white woman passes through a workshop where all black men are working on sewing machines. She is higher up, on a sort of mezzanine. The workers raise their heads and roll their eyes as if they were going to swallow her alive, a complete caricature of lust and looking lecherous. I feel for the actors who had to go through this to get work & make a living. I am always baffled by the white assumption that all non-white men are after white women…don’t flatter yourself.
Anyway, it is a great document as it reveals crudely what the whites thought then, and what some of them still think now. But think about it: why do women get raped in wars? It’s a demonstration of power which not only defeats the women, but also their partners whose “possession” has been violated since men often think women belong to them, and can go down into the generations if these women get pregnant.

Rich White males favor White women as beneficiaries because they are apart of the White race and they believe that the White race should only have economic, social and political advantages in society. However, I do believe that sexism and racism exists and is a problem that should be addressed in society. I know because I am a Black woman. I go through sexism and racism combined.
I don’t mind you talking about sexism at all but I politely ask if you don’t lump the issues of sexism and White feminism with the struggles Blacks and other minorities go through.

Part of this country’s history was protecting White womenhood and her ”purity”. I don’t hate White women at all but I don’t see them as any better than other women. Women are women. Anyways White women were and still seen as beautiful, wholesome and pure and in need of protecting from those ”big, bad savage beasts” aka Black men. White women were seen as the most desirable and that every man wanted her. White men have been protecting and promoting White women as the most wholesome of all women for centuries.
A Black man who got involved with White women back in the day risked his life. He would go to jail if he whistled or touched a White woman. The White woman was seen as the ”forbidden fruit” or a curiosity. Sometimes Black men like Emmitt Till were lynched for whistling at a Black woman. Some White women and Black men had sexual relations back in those days but the White woman tried so hard to keep it secret because it would ruin her image in her community. So many of them lied that the Black man raped her to cover up sexual relations or defend a man who abused her.

One of the things I like to do to pass time is browse Google Maps (it’s almost like traveling, except you’re not burning gas or getting cut off by irate drivers). So I browsed to where Rosewood, FL was/is. Not a lot of development in that area. Come to think of it, the entirety of Levy County is like a lot of southeastern counties – thinly populated and relatively poor, save for a scant few moneymakers.
But at least Rosewood’s listed on Google Maps. You won’t even see the name “Sumner” – just a Google pinpoint in the middle of the main road not far from Rosewood.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that between the time Rosewood was sacked and razed by the hateful unreconstructed and today, there hasn’t been much in the way of economic progress. I suppose a lot of the whites around the area managed to pick up Rosewood land for a song after all was said and done, but they haven’t done much with it. Ceder Key looks interesting, but it’s still a small, quaint little speck in a state with bigger tourist draws. The historical example of Rosewood gives the LIE to often contested debates about Black economic empowerment, development and self improvement. It is not as if Black people have not shown themselves to be more than capable of achieving this. The FACT is they have always been prevented.
This aspect does not only apply to America it applies on a global scale too. Its not just Black communities which have been prevented from organically growing and developing. Its countries and states too.
Growth of ones own community can no longer be considered in isolation it has to be within an agreed shard global structure which includes everyone. While the ideology and controlling structure of white supremacy remains firmly in place restrictions will ultimately always apply.
Its no different to slaves growing their own independent business on the plantation. Sooner or later if its successful the master will want a cut of any of the profits or control of it. Eventually either dominating it completely, eliminating it to avoid unfavorable competition or even having it challenge the plantation slave institution itself!

I was sitting on the couch talking to some friends and acquaintances at the coffee house and how much things have changed for black people came up. Perhaps just trying to look on the brighter side the one of the black ladies in our group said that things are getting better slowly, but surely in America. One of the white ladies looked at her and said maybe for a few individuals but not over all. Yeah you don’t see all out lynching fests, but shooting unarmed black, on the ground hand cuffed black men is still lynching. Having to worry about random searches and police harassment how is that really different from jim crow. Black women are still the most unprotected women in the states. Yes, we could have success and yes white people will find a way to fuck it up directly or indirectly.
Yes, to some the story of rosewood and the like may be old, but you can find black communities being destroyed in every decade. Look at who’s communities freeways are placed through. Who’s communities regardless of wealth and standing are bound to be on a Superfund site. Once built up who gets taxed and gentrified out of their our place? Yeah, the more I look at this the more i think it is not that whites in general want nothing to do with us they want everything to do with us in that we are used to hold up their mental well being and to this day give a base of superiority from which no matter their standing leaves them privileged over at least somebody.
So, the question is if, noting has really changed where do we go from here and what does the future hold if, not more of the same. Just my thoughts.

If you are still here: your question may come from a good place, but try to imagine what it feels like to non-whites???
For one maumau, how many invasions of countries wanted as colonies and non whites “genocided” to make room for the exported whites or enslaved to work for said imported whites? Keep in mind that, usually, the attackers were/are non-white, and if the people attacked killed more than the original attack as they defended themselves, well…The attack should not have been started in the first place, because you do not keep track of how many you need to kill to break even once the mayhem starts!!! (you Johnny over there, you’ve had you quota, go straight back home to your wife and mom, oops, sorry, they were killed last week). The only exonerating circumstance for non-whites: in a few instances, they did not realise they behaved in a way that was perceived as an attack… because they had never considered the notion of cultural sensitivity.
Now, we all agree that it may have been the other way around if non-whites had been in the place of the whites, we all agree human nature is not that brilliant, but the point is, it was not the oher way around and according to latest neurological research, the human brain and human nature is quite adaptable and able to change, and we want change.

Just curious:
1. What period does White History cover? When between 1923 and 1991 does it start?
2. How many Black lives are worth one White life? How many Blacks have to die in a massacre before it rises to the level of a race riot during which one White person died? What is the ratio of racial worth?

Great post, Abagond! Vomit-inducing truths like that of the Rosewood Massacre should be mandatory reading material in all schools across the ‘States-and once again, makes me grateful that I left that POS state of Flori-dumb before it was too late!

2/11/19 That lying, horny, whore, slut, puta –
FANNY TAYLOR – has blood on her hands & should’ve been forced to pay for the 150 or so deaths SHE CAUSED BY HER SELFISHNESS by being friend in the electric chair. She is a classic SOCIOPATH. This movie is over 20 yrs old, yet never heard of it. I never heard of the massacre, either. I’m just too pissed, too livid & too upset & depressed to read any of the comments. All I can add is a quote from one of my idols, George Carlin, as I agree 100% with his statement: “America is a shit country!”
