The slave patrols (1704-1865) in the American South were armed bands of three to six white men on horseback who rode through the night looking for runaway slaves and other blacks up to no good.
- Manpower: three to six white men
- Weapons: guns, whips
- Transport: horses
- Range: a beat about ten miles wide (16km)
- Hours of operation: mainly at night
- Duties:
- Stop blacks and ask for their pass
- Catch runaways
- Enforce curfew
- Break up gatherings of blacks
- Disarm blacks
- Search homes for guns and books, both signs of a possible uprising
- Keep blacks in line through terror
If they stopped you and you could not produce a pass from your master, they could kill you, whip you or physicially screw you up. And even if you did have a pass and were doing nothing wrong, they might still choose to beat you up.
The point was not so much to find and return runaways as some kind of public service to slave owners, but to keep blacks in line to prevent slave uprisings. The government paid slave owners for any property damage the patrols caused, like dead slaves.
Slave catchers were separate from the slave patrol. They caught runaways slaves for a living. They are the ones with the bloodhounds. They generally got $50 a slave, $5 more if whipped. This was back when a white day labourer made $1 a day and healthy slaves of working age were worth between $500 and $1500 (400 to 1200 crowns).
The practice started in South Carolina in 1704. It became much more serious after the Stono Rebellion of 1739. In time it spread to all the slave states of the South. All white men of military age had to serve in the slave patrols, whether they owned slaves or not. It was a civic duty. It helped to bind white men together across class lines and to pit poor whites violently against blacks in the service of slavery.
The Union Army from the North outlawed slave patrols after the Civil War, but they soon sprang up outside the law as vigilante groups, the best known being the Ku Klux Klan. Even though there was no longer a threat of a slave uprising, whites, if anything, feared blacks even more.
The Klan was modelled directly on the slave patrols. So much so that some blacks who lived back then thought the Klan was founded before the Civil War. The Klan was not backed by law but the law turned a blind eye to it.
The Klan’s duties were largely the same (curfews, disarming blacks, spreading terror, etc) with these additions:
- lynching
- cross burning
- raping black women
- burning down black schools
- burning down black churches
- making blacks too afraid to vote
Modern American policing grows in part out of the slave patrols. For example, the terms “patrol” and “beat” come from them. So does the idea of the stakeout. The current police practices of racial profiling and police brutality against blacks and Latinos do not seem like a far cry from the old slave patrols.

I remember studying history in college, and they would tell us how these “slave patrols” and “slave hunters” would actually ignore papers or actually kidnap free blacks and sell them.
I think this contributes to this habit many white people have where they think it’s their right and job to patrol around finding ways to mess with and harass black people, as if their whiteness gives them authority to act like glorified cops.

I had a recent experience. Two weeks ago, I was followed as I walked back to my car after an appointment. 5 to 6 white men got out of an SUV, walking towards me, demanding an explanation as to why I was on the property.
I did not stop, in fact I walked faster to get to my car. They started yelling
“This is private property.” “You’re not supposed to be here.” They looked like a mob. As this post reminds me: White people were given the genetic material a long time ago to terrorize non-white people.
Random. Obviously white. Men. The New Race Terrorist. (The RATS) They are all suspects.
I appreciate the accurate history refresher. Back in my more racially confused days, I would have thought they were just being RUDE. Now I know, they are being very strategic.

I didn’t know about slave patrols. Trayvon’s brutalization and murder seems to me eerily reminscent of the slave patrol mentality.
And the murderer’s ties with the Sanford police bureau and subsequent lack of arrest just smacks of the same sort of institutional corruption and hypocrisy as these slave patrols. Freedom of life, liberty, happiness: unless you are a Black male/female. Then you can be hunted down and murdered under any pretense – because your existence threatens white sense of order!
Any excuse to keep Blacks in line: He was defending the community! Look at Trayvon’s facebook! He is guilty of dressing “thug.” Trayvon could have posed a threat. If he had defended himself against a crazy stalker. Then the white patrol member is “defending himself.” Against a teen armed with skittles!
SMH. What a system these whites have created.

I see you’re showing 1865 as the year slave patrols (officially?) ended. But did it? We now know in fact through Blackmon’s eye-opening research the full extent that slavery (forced labor) continued covertly after 1865 in southern states under the cover of the legal system and the “good ole boy – law enforcement – network.”
Black codes, laws written primarily to excuse/force/keep blacks in servitude/slavery for whites, enforced by a “refined” southern slave patrol, kept this neo-slavery profitable enterprise going for another 70 years.
I hesitate to say 70 years since a good argument can be made that this slavery/Jim Crow nexus still persists today via minimum wage AND the current criminal justice-political-industrial complex which still finds slick nefarious ways to cage black and brown bodies for cheap corporate labor, profit and the economic revitalization for white rural communities all across the American landscape.
An added happy outcome/bonus to white supremacy is that THIS racist warehousing and jailing of Africans/blacks diminishes/decimates the strength/power of black/brown families and communities.
Utilized as fodder for white-supremacy we’re the useless (yet useful) so-called bottom feeders that’s STILL a significant part of the fuel that drives America’s financial engine.

So sorry you had to experience such an unsettling and frightful event. I’ve had these traumatic experieces as a child, adolescent, and as an adult as I was the only black child in the neighborhood and of course, the neighborhood school. My wish for you is that you will stay attuned to these issues and continue to advocate for racial equality, while your heart stays open to each individual regardless of so-called race or ethnicity. Still, with all that said, be mindful.
In connecting the topic to my response above: A few personal snippets.
My grandma, a beautiful, graceful, and generous woman ran for her life down a rural dirt road when her stepfather and brother were confronted, beaten, and lynched by drunk white farmers and she later raped (at age of 13) in Harriman, TN by an unknown white man. These events occured in 1930 and 1936 respectively. Furthermore, my grandmother herself is a result of my great-grandmother being raped by some unknown white brute in 1923. None of these events were prosecuted.
In 1980 on the northern east coast of the US, (yes, I was still a child and as skinny as the number 11-that’s what my grandma said, ha!) I was jumped and beaten by four teenage white boys as I was minding my own business walking to the neighborhood store to purchase some BBQ UTZ chips. Tears streaming, lips swollen and bloody, blackend eye, hair disheveled, and several large knots on my head, I returned home to seek comfort in the arms of my mother (who from my birth to a year after this incident worked PT b/c she wanted to be there as much as she could during my formative years while my dad worked FT and attended University in the evening to earn his degree (drafted to fight in Vietnam put his dreams on hold for a bit). Of course, my mom was first concerned for my well-being and later outraged upon hearing my story. Mom went over to speak to the parents of these boys since Dad was at work. I was so young and afraid that I can not remember all that occured, but what I do recall is a rotund pink pig-faced white man verbally and physically threatning my 110lb mom and later my mother being arrested for being on their property and my grandma picking me up to take me to hospital. Were these boys or their father ever held legally accountable for their dispicable actions? No.

Reality check buddy: I live in a freaking gated white community! Hey, in case you have noticed, you don’t even know what race I am. And fwi, black people don’t only live in certain neighborhoods. It’s called upward mobility. Jeez.
It’s been proven that young people of color have more to fear from walking in white neighborhoods than any other one. You could actually read the stories of people who have been mobbed, attacked, chased into traffic, etc. but that’s asking to much from you. Everyone knows racists just will those stories out of existence anyways.
@ MinnieB,
I’m pretty much saying that this is the first time I’ve actually wondered if they were safe in their own neighborhood, because there could be a Zimmerman who doesn’t think they belong here. I knew that it’s happened before, and many times, even before Emmett Till. But I never actually had a modern, tangible example of just how precarious their existence can be in a system that treats them as dangerous based on their skin color.
That’s why stuff like slave patrols is so poignant. Instead of a bunch of white men running around kidnapping free black people to be sold back into slavery, we have white people seeing people of color as something to chase, hound, and investigate. It’s the same concept, different time.

Abagond…Again i can’t say enough about the history lessons you provide on the regular! As personinmotion points out – “Trayvon’s brutalization and murder seems to me eerily reminscent of the slave patrol mentality.”
“It became much more serious after the Stono Rebellion of 1739.”
I know the site of the Stono Rebellion well – it occured on the island from whence my family came – and you are dead-on in your observation. The high rate of slaves imported to work the land, coupled with whites, “dying at a rate of more than half a dozen per day,” due to a yellow fever epidemic, began to raise serious fears of slave uprisings (much like the fear we see today as a result of the “browning ” of America) – because, during 1739, Black slaves made up nearly 65% of the population in the Carolina colony.
After Stono, they used the brutality of slave patrols (and slave-catchers – some of whom, were “settlment” Indians) and public executions to – as you said – “keep blacks in line to prevent slave uprisings.” Additionally, because they felt that newly-arrived slaves were more prone to rebel and were harder to “break,” particularly those from Angola/Congo/Guinea (many of the rebels were Angolans, led by a slave named Jemmy) – slave importations from those areas of Africa and the West Indies (where many were first taken to work sugar plantations) were cut to a tenth of what they were the year before. The also imposed a prohibitively high duty on owners who did bring anyo them in from those places with the money collected, used to encourage more whites to immigrate from Europe to alter the imbalance in population numbers.
As for the Klan, I am also old enough to remember every one of those “duties” you listed above, particularly the sperading of terror. And I hav to co-sin sepultura13’s “they still do” – because they’re still at it in my hometown! My cousin just forwarded me a video about them soliciting recruits through flyers stuffed in folk’ mailboxes!: http://lets-be-clear.blogspot.com/2012/03/kkk-in-south-carolina-feeling-little.html

I grew up in a semi-affluent suburb in Northern California, and I can honestly say that I felt more uncomfortable in the “Whiter” areas than the multi-ethnic ones. I don’t know about you guys, but I can sense hostility. I would normally ride my bicycle from home while holding a second bike next to me, wait for my sister to get out of school (she was in the 4th grade), and ride home with her – helmets, backbacks and all. We had to stop riding our bikes around in the evening because a truck of white men chased a black youth down, threw glass bottles at him, tied him to the back of the truck and dragged him down the road – they got away and were never caught; this happened literally right next to our house.
Also my mom would organize Halloween, Harvest, and Easter gatherings in the cul-de-sac outside of our house for all of the kids on the street (complete with games, prizes, and snacks) – all of the ethnic minority families would come out and show community love and support, but only ONE white family came out (when white families with kids were the majority on our street).
That post was a bit off topic, but the first half was in relation to the above post and the Zimmerman situation – and the second is towards covert White racism in general. I was 12-17 during this time, and it taught me a lot about the way I’m perceived by American society due to the color of my skin. Hard lessons to learn, but they provided an immense amount of wisdom.

A lot of times when white people want to know about you it’s only so they can feel better about themselves or how ‘fortunate’ they are. Like some of the comments here, I also have painful memories of being threatened by Whites. I grew up in Detroit and one incident that stands out in my mind is me riding my bike alone one block from my house. A pickup truck with two White males drove up right along side of me and they began shouting racial slurs. I plainly remember at age ten, decades ago, one of them calling me “Black wench.” I thought they were going to run me over with their truck. Thinking back it reminds me of the scene in the movie, “A Time to Kill.” I went home terrified. I was having a discussion with someone awhile back and they came to the conclusion that in addition to the history, the United States economy benefits from a capitalistic social format; and in a capitalistic social format, differences are exploited for profit in everything (from television programming to the prison system) – and for that exact reason America won’t be changing anytime soon. It’s all about the $$$$.

Yes, as always, follow the money. Who benefits from this? Who has the motive? Who runs it? The System is old and it has never been truly changed. In the 60’s it became close but then the empire hit back: assasiations, economical manipulation, poltical manipulation, manipulation of the judicial system, creation of the prison industry (which shuts out millions of blacks since unlike in most “civilized countries” felons loose their right to vote, creates false population counts and thus shifts electorial power, is a very good business indeed and can be easily controlled by politically nominated judges and officials etc.)

I remember that young people can also facilitate this slave patrol mentality, especially when they go trolling in groups for black kids to bully. I had to be in science class at the same table as those people.
They would gang up on the black kid at the table and say all manner of terrible things to her about her race, and they wouldn’t let up until the bell rang. They seriously would gather to make sure they could put her back in her “place” as if it were their job to do so. They had no punishment either.
I remember reading a story about a man who was chased into oncoming traffic by a white mob using the slave patrol mentality (this happened a few years ago), I believe he was killed and they received minimal sentences.

The fear that many whites have for black is self-manufactured . Don’t think so. Crime by blacks is high in the USA and many whites have no desire to live near blacks. Why would we arbitrarily manufacture some idea like this, which requires we uproot ourselves and move? That makes no sense.
Not only the crime, but the presence of a significant percentage of black kids in a school degrades the school quality, due to violence, misbehavior, guns, etc from the black kids. Every white in the USA knows this. When whites choose a house, we have to be very sure it’s in a good school district , i.e, few blacks.
Even the blacks know this. The problem the blacks have is that they have to struggle to get away from themselves. They know the black-majority school districts are crap. No tax base, undisciplined black kids. Many try to sneak into the good white schools by registering in districts they don’t actually live in.
You, Bulanik like the other blacks on this site, just don’t want to face this. You are as much of a Black Racist as any other on this blog. You make unwarranted attacks on whites without a hint of knowing what you’re talking about.

But open up a few history books and there are the crime statistics does nothing for the present. You live in the present; you Blacks constantly want to live in the past. You are going to have to get over that.
I know it’s been said before – because it’s true, that’s why you keep hearing it!!!

“How much learning by whites was truncated for them to learn and obey instead, the primary lesson, which was – fear blacks?” Exactly. And as all white men had served in the slave patrols, even those who had no real interest in upholding slavery, after that there was a huge incentive for them to remain racists, because if they started to see black people as equals, they would have to see their own past actions for what they really were.

You’re a bit late on the uptake, Old Chap. This happened in the 1960s when the Civil War was finally effectively settled and black peoples’ right were established. And now the blacks have most of the USA white population cowed to their every ridiculous whim as a mea culpa. And still they are not satisfied and not able to get ahead, except where they have natural skills, as in sports and entertainment. Funny how that works; there is no such thing as race, but there is racism. There’s no difference blacks and whites, but for some uncanny reason they stand out in just these two fields. That’s one or two for “race realism”.

I don’t understand what you’re asking here. It’s widely accepted that blacks are skilled in these two areas – certainly not all blacks excel in these areas, and not all whites are deficient. It’s just amazing how blacks, in the context of being in the USA, show, at least, above average abilities in these areas. I don’t contest that they are good in these areas. It’s just strange that there are supposedly “no racial differences”, and who would argue that there is a difference between the races in these areas. In these two cases, blacks could be said (not my choice of words) to be “superior”.

So if, as a race realist, you believe there really are scientifically provable races. Don’t know what you mean by “scientifically provable races” Race is a biological term (it’s also used ethnically in the USA, other places too, I guess). Race is not some kind of geometric or set-theory term; there are no hard boundaries, hard laws describing race as in the others categories.
You got your 3 or 4 races, which indicate populations of humans that settled in different areas of Eurasia after the one or several migrations out of Africa. These populations mixed within themselves and mixed little or not all with the others. Therefore, the mutations that took place and accumulated with-in the various populations caused some different traits to be genetically assimilated into the populations. There wasn’t enough to cause speciation, i.e, humans splitting into separate species, but differences more along sub-species changes, i.e. the races. Humans remained within one species, and could inter mate racially.
The races had some differential genetic changes per their environmental pressures. Obviously, skin color is one. Intelligence is thought to deviate between different races, say, between black and white, maybe because colder European climates caused a sexual preferance for smart mates, more so than in Africa. There are no genetic notes, so this is just an inference.
The important thing is that there are differences between races. Since races can interbreed, since the Age of Discovery, there has been mixing. It’s more complicated today, racewise.
Perhaps blacks have more developed, in some way, muscle or nervous systems that help them in music or sports. Maybe because they are less intelligent, their visceral systems are more dominant.
I certainly don’t know why there are differences, it seems that there are. That’s all that I care about

Maybe you should pull up a chair, put on a dunce cap, and prepare to be educated about welfare.
There are many types of welfare: Social Security, AFDC, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. The majority of Americans who receive welfare checks are not Black. The majority of those who receive welfare checks are White people:
-Whites receive the lion’s share of welfare benefits. What millions of Black Americans pay into the system ends up going to Whites who retire (Social Security, if you are not intelligent enough to realize it, is welfare). Some 61 percent of welfare recipients (the word recipients means those who receive, in case you don’t know that), are White, while 33 percent are Black, according to 2000 Census Bureau statistics:
http://www.census.gov/
Social Security is the nation’s largest welfare program, although many Whites prefer to call it a retirement plan. The government writes retirement and disability benefit checks to 35.4 million recipients of whom 88.7 percent are White and 9.6 percent are Black. The reason behind this shocking disparity is perhaps the most lamentable of all: The life expectancy rate for Blacks is six times shorter than that of Whites, meaning Black workers spend years paying into a retirement system only to have White retirees reap the benefits for a longer time; Black Americans do not even get to receive so much from what they have worked hard to pay into the system of welfare; even there they are stomped on and gutted by this society/country/government. Black Americans outnumber Whites on welfare, but, are Blacks getting what they paid into the system? No. The federal government defines welfare as all entitlement programs funded through taxes. These programs, listed as “direct benefit payments for individuals” by the Office of Management and Budget, make up approximately $730 billion or 43 percent of the $1.47 trillion the government will spend this fiscal year. Welfare critics rarely search the Social Security rolls for “welfare cheats,” but train their sights on people getting Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), Medicaid and food stamps, the relief programs with the most Black clients. Yet government figures show that Whites not Blacks make up the bulk of clients on these public aid programs; a fact that dispels the notion that Blacks are scheming for a free lunch courtesy of the American taxpayer.
Many people (such as yourself) snot and cry about the numbers of Black people who receive some types of welfare, with Blacks receiving 33% welfare types in relation to their 12% of the U.S.population. But racism is at the heart of the standard-of-living gap between Blacks and Whites. Still unlawful race-based hiring practices, keep many Blacks from getting jobs that pay enough to lift them out of poverty. Until more blue-collar (and white collar jobs), open up to Black workers, Blacks will continue to battle poverty and the freeloader misconception will continue to lodge as residue in the non-Black American mind. As long as Blacks continue to face substandard education, systematic racism, urban warfare and limited paths leading up and out of poverty, the rest of America will find it easy to hate on Black’s suffering in this country——until it hits home.
With the dying and sputtering economy, with more Whites losing ground in the failing recession/depression economy, with more Whites losing jobs and finding themselves on the unemployment lines, this society is going to have to find another scapegoat to blame the failing economy on, as opposed to the constant need to blame innercity people for this nation’s savage policies of economic destruction.
People (with intelligent, lucid brains) only need to look at the White families streaming into welfare offices in rural New Hampshire for proof that poverty has more to do with economics than race.
The once thriving state has seen an 88 percent jump in welfare cases since 1989, yet the states Black population is a meager 0.6 percent.
http://www.census.gov/
Now, how do you explain all those hard-working Whites ending up on welfare, since to you a welfare recipient can only be Black?
All across America, there is proof that you can have the best job in the world: but, get cut from a company looking to keep its profits up at the expense of its employees, a company with its eye on the bottom line—-, then YOU will find yourself out of a job, living a paycheck away from homelessness, falling behind on the mortgage, falling behind on car payments, unable to feed/clothe your children, having to decide between medicine, hospitalization, OR food—–or worse, having to get on WELFARE—-no matter what race you hail from.
But, don’t worry. . . .
. . . .millions of Whites will soon be where so many Blacks are now.
Millions of them are already there.
That’s what those of us all get for blind obedience to a government that cares nothing for us all, as well as practicing race hatred instead of communal help towards each other.
Oops! Almost forgot. Mustn’t forget the BIGGEST welfare cheats in America:
Corporate Welfare Queens!
-Corporations (such as the BIG 3, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, CitGo, etc.) who despite their millions of bonuses, and high salaries, still manage to pig-suck billions of dollars from a government that only slaps them on the hand for company mismanagement and pathetic business procedures, while that same country/government runs into the ground its citizens who are just barely getting by on subsistence poverty wages.
-Wal-Mart, a big beneficiary of welfare:
http://www.progress.org/2004/corpw37.htm
Welfare payments to timber corporations:
http://www.progress.org/2005/tcs180.htm
Even when they are losing millions, America still keeps shoveling subsidy monies out to inept companies.
Corporate welfare TIF (tax increment financing) allows governments to give money, in the form of property tax exemptions, to whatever private corporations they choose. Now, how many citizens can say that they have received such breaks from their government?
http://www.progress.org/banneker/cw.html
Welfare reform never succeeded in reducing poverty and unemployment, something welfare reform was never intended to do. You want to see less Americans on any type of welfare, call out your state and local representatives to institute better education curriculums in schools; better education, better jobs; better jobs, better skills; better skills, more opportunities in life, therefore, less dependency on any kind of welfare. For anyone.
The poverty rate has more to do with the economy than the availability of assistance for poor people. No matter what race those poor people come in.
“…..typical black.”
Okay, just what is a typical Black? In answering, I would say a typical Black is a person who does the following:
-works hard (usually twice as hard) to get a job;
-has a strong work ethic;
-is a good team worker on the job;
-can be counted on to work with minimal supervision;
-arrives to work on time;
-does not break the law;
-is a productive member of society
Those are the typical qualities of being a citizen of this country, who happens to be Black.
By that ludicrous statement you made….what is a typical White person?
So, by your unsound illogic only White people have the right to move about from Point A to Point B in this country. Legalized Jane Crow segregation has been eradicated.
Unfortunately only on paper; obviously not from people’s hearts and minds.
“You ( whitey ) have something i want so i will whine till i get it or i will steal it.
By that illogical statement, White people would be experts on stealing:
-theft of Native Americans land;-theft of Africans from Africa;-theft of Black American’s labor and skills: cultivation of rice, indigo, weaving, metalwork of enslaved Africans;-theft of Black American’s culture: gospel, rhythm and blues; folktales, language/vernacular dialects, to name just a few:
“YOU (Black people) have something I want because for centuries(and in the present) many of us (non-Blacks) by hook and crook, steal from you, have stolen from you, and continue to steal from you your dignity, your rights as U.S. citizens, your respect as fellow human beings.”
“Heaven forbid i work for it to get something similar.”
Heaven forbid that I am given respect as a citizen of this country; heaven forbid that my humanity is respected; heaven forbid that I am not maltreated as less than a White person just because of the color of my skin.
Heaven forbid that I no longer am paid $0.67 cents for every $1.00 that a WhIte man makes.
Heaven forbid that America finally grows a backbone and cease it mentally challenged disrespect of me as a non-welfare/non-criminal/non-lazy citizen.

@ Origin,
Speaking of police brutality, I’ve noticed that the treatment blacks (and often latinos) receive is a lot more violent and frightening that the kind white people receive, even for repeat offenses or drug charges. I’ve even seen videos of cops punching black women (who were much smaller and younger than them) in the face for “mouthing off”. There were kids in my class, who were traumatized by the Rodney King beating. A cop came to the class to talk to them, and I remember them crying and asking if the cop was going to beat them up. Even at that age, they knew their race was going to determine if cops would hurt them. Cops seem to have a suspect and shoot first ask questions later response for people of color.
@ Abagond,
I’ve noticed that people of color seemed to fear being out in rural areas than in the city. My theory is that at least in the city, if you are being beaten by cops and killed there are a lot of people who see it and can at least speak up for you. If your in the middle of a Sundown town at night, people will never see you again.
Interesting thing, I’ve noticed a connotation between the ending of Night of the Living Dead and the slave patrols that Abagond talks about in his post. They hunt the rural area for “dangerous undead”, shoot a living black guy on site, and then pose with the body and drag him like he’s some game they’ve caught. A lot of people I’ve talked to (when they saw that scene) had the impression the “posse” wouldn’t have cared whether he was alive or dead when they shot him only because they had a set idea of what a living human being was and a black person was not it.

As I understand it african american is a term, a word formed to describe black americans (who originally came from Africa as slaves) after all the other words became tainted more or less and also to highlight their heritage. Now Obamas father was a kenyan and mother white american if I remember correctly, thus he really is african and american.
However, I have met black americans who refused to be called african americans because they think they are absolutely americans, and black americans that is, and they are proud of that. This does not mean they think all is well in USA or that they are blindly patriotic. Not at all. They were thinking they had every right to claim the whole USA as their own, just like whites do, and not to be pushed aside in any way.
Perhaps some one can give us more troughly explanation and history of the word.

Yeah they do, but to them the homeless are a subclass much like blacks are. A white man could get harsh treatment, but odds are they won’t be beaten to death or killed over it, but homeless people are not “people” so their individual rights are not respected. What frightens me is that they have such a institutional bias against those types of people that they feel they can pick one off when they’re in a bad mood or feel like they need to make an example out of someone.
@ Jimbo,
Off topic question, but unless your going to tell Irish they can’t call themselves “Irish American” and Italians they can’t call themselves “Italian Americans”, you really can’t see an issue with black people call themselves African American. I’m pretty sure the majority of Irish descended people have never stepped foot on the British Isles, let alone Ireland. .

No it’s not. To be a member of a true ethnicity, at least one of your parents (biological or adoptive) has to be a member. On the other hand, the so-called African American group attempts to absorb everyone living in the US who has noticeable African ancestry, regardless of whether they have any black American ancestors or not. This “ethnicity” houses people fresh from Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Ghana, etc. even though they have no historical connection to American slavery. “African American” is a race, not an ethnicity.

Don’t attempt to enter a semantical argument with me. There is a reason race and ethnicity are listed as separate on many census forms.
As for President Obama being part of the African American ethnicity, I can see why you’d exclude him from that classification. I partially agree, since his exposure to African American culture might be somewhat limited.
Furthermore, biologically speaking, the objective existence of race is questionable at best. But if you want to go there, let’s go there…
Mixed race and biracial people, born in the U.S., technically aren’t really the same race as Black or African. So logically, if the African American classification often includes these individuals (native born), AA can’t be a race – especially when the One Drop Rule is still utilized today (as you yourself stated).
If you are instead trying to insinuate that only the purest blooded African Americans, whatever that means, are true AA, then you are again wrong.
I mean, re-reading your post, you basically debunked your own response in the second half of your paragraph.

Sorry, but this is simply wrong. Those are some of the ways, but not the only ways that ethnicity is acquired. Persons can and do change their ethnicity (or inversely delete a prior or partial ethnicity) any time in the course of their lives. One way to do it is through marriage and children, but it could be done any time a person decides to re-align their social and cultural identity to that of a particular ethnic group.
Indeed, if one is adopted, is there a rule which determines at what point ethnicity is transferred? If someone is adopted, say, at age 15, is their ethnicity completely realigned to match their adoptive parents, or do they have the choice still? Or if a child adopted in infancy is reunited with his / her biological parents after puberty, is it too late to reclaim (or rejoin) the biological parents’ ethnicity?
Alternatively, those of us who may have multiracial or multiethnic ancestries may have been flatly rejected membership by any or all of the ancestral ethnicities. How can you determine what ethnicity is acquired in those cases? Or in other cases, we might choose to acknowledge multiracial or multiethnic ancestry, but we personally do not have choose any or all of them as our current ethnicity.
African-American could be a term that represents race, ethnicity or national origin. It is used in all cases, so it is difficult to say that a particular use is *wrong* — Confusing or equivocal perhaps, but not wrong. Perhaps when one uses a term, one should define their meaning.
Many agree that Obama’s “African-American” ethnicity (and this is the sense that I am using it) was not largely transferred directly through his parents or their families (although, one may argue he was acquiring an African-American ethnic identity of sorts while he was growing up). But, it does not preclude the possibility that he could have acquired this *ethnicity* through other means.

Very well balanced reply. The concept of race has at least in scientific circles been superseded by the concept of ethnicity. Ethnicity is a racial, cultural and sociological term based on the context it’s used in. Because ethnicity is a social concept and not a purely biological one it is flexible.

Used to describe geographical areas of patrol in London not the United States. It was expected that a constable would learn all about each beat he covered, even though they would not necessarily be the same one each shift. A new constable would usually be shown around the beats by an experienced constable who would point out important considerations.Missing a point without good reason was regarded very seriously and was often the cause of disciplinary action against an officer. Beat officers were commonly used in the 1800s. WIKI Dont believe your BS.

ate 13c., “person who is the chattel or property of another,” from Old French esclave (13c.), from Medieval Latin Sclavus “slave” (source also of Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally “Slav” (see Slav); so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples.
This sense development arose in the consequence of the wars waged by Otto the Great and his successors against the Slavs, a great number of whom they took captive and sold into slavery. [Klein] Before America was even a wet dream. Why you spreading hate and lies.

My post is mainly based on “Slave Patrols” (2001) by Sally E. Hadden, published by Harvard University Press.
Your comments seem to be based on the Wikipedia.

Hey Abagond,
You must know that any/every sophomoric white dude showing up here with an authoritative and chastening air must be here on behalf of the poorly educated and misguided souls that hang here who haven’t one accurate historical clue as to what happened with our own ancestors.
I mean, in essence, he must be right in what he says, because he says so (and because he’s WHITE)!

Not saying your poor uneducated souls and I’m only half a sophomoric white dude. You posted it so it must be open to debate, Sorry if the truth hurts.

Your post says the words at the top were derived from Slave Patrols and they are clearly not. “Modern American policing grows in part out of the slave patrols. For example, the terms “patrol” and “beat” come from them.” If you want hate preach it. Same is true about love and equality.

You should quote what you are talking about, because right now I have no clue what you are even saying.

How is it a lie? Things are not a lie because you refuse to believe it, so you need to support your stance.

Me thinks Mister Milton is going on (or off) about suggesting that the examination of Amerika’s (ugly, hidden & largely unacknowledged) history on this site is counter-productive. We should all be holding hands and singing kumbaya in solidarity instead… for a glorious future – where the past is should be avoided, as Abagond presents it (it’s a lie), because it fans the hatred of white people by Black people.
Hey Mister Milton, sir. Did I get that (BS) right???

From what I can tell, Milton has taken issue with the original blog post:
@Milton Rosenstien
To save time, could you please highlight for us the 1% of the original post you think is factual? I ask because from what I could tell, the only part you took issue with was this:
I got that because you attempted to provide alternatives for the origins of those words in American vernacular by quoting Wikipedia.

Haste makes waste!
So I’m rewriting a portion of my previous comment:
For the sake of a glorious future we should all just hold hands and sing kumbaya in solidarity instead of looking honestly at how some things came to be.
Amerika’s racial past is to be avoided as Abagond presents it (it’s a lie). In addition, it fans the hatred of white people by Black people.

I wrote about slave patrols to help me to understand the police, something most White people have the luxury of not doing. You, apparently, are happy with trusting the Wikipedia. Lucky you.
I am racist against Whites, but if hatred was what mainly drove me, I would write about them differently:

Sorry I’m am NOT AT ALL discrediting the atrocities of american slavery. But the premise that modern policing was derived from slave patrols is pure fiction. European cities had beats and patrols before American even existed. That’s the problem: if a novel’s foundation is built on lies or far fetched opinions not based on any type of fact, you might as well be reading Star wars.
Furthermore lies and falsehoods brings discredit to the thousands of Americans that suffered after the emancipation, during the Jim Crow Era, and the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s, which my father happened to be heavily involved. Yes it also undermines the many proven claims of police abuse that continues to go on today.

It does not undermine those “claims of police abuse” at all. It puts them into historical context, it makes sense of them.
In my own experience, the police make way more sense as warmed-over slave patrols that were never properly reformed, either during Reconstruction or during the Civil Rights period, than as something imported directly from European cities,
Black Americans, especially those in poor neighbourhoods, are policed in a very different way than Whites. Not sure if you have noticed that. It does not follow any sort of “protect and serve” or “maintaining law and order” model that is applied to Whites. Instead it maintains “order” through terroristic tactics and has NO RESPECT for the law. NONE. It is now on video. Check it out.
