I grew up listening to Whitney Houston’s music, her modeling career, and her movie career. She has accomplished more in her lifetime than most and I hope people remember her accomplishments in the movie, modeling, and music industry, not her personal life.
May Whitney Houston rests in peace!

Whitney Houston is dead? My goodness, this is the first time you managed to really shock me Abagond. But life just is not fair, though we might endeavour to make it fairly just.

It is is sad, Whitney Houston died. All the ol’ school ’80s and ’90s singers are dying so soon! Why is that? I am 16 and I notice it all the time. It wasn’t Whitney’s time to die. I loved her music but I didn’t like what happened in her personal life. I am so shocked she died. Sad as well. Her death is just as shocking and sad as Michael Jackson’s. I agree with Abagond, I never thought I will live in a world without Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. They were both talented individuals. May they rest in peace.

I never was a fan but respected and admired her as one of the all time singers. And her songs were part of the soundtrack of my life back in the 80’s. She was popular in Finland too back then. Tells you something about the woman and the impact of her voice.

such a shame. this is not a good black history month. first don, now whitney? like michael, she was also a soundtrack to my childhood and boy could she sing. my heart stopped when i found out the news. people can make fun of her over her choices with drugs but she did try to get better so i give her credit for that. such a beautiful woman. no female artist of today can’t compare to whitney. i like some but when it comes to whitney, they can’t be compared to a legend. period.

I’m stunned, shocked and saddened. I so clearly remember hearing ‘Saving all My love for you’ for the first time and thinking what a beautiful song it was and what a fantastic voice she had.
I saw her then on X Factor and noted that, she looked a bit fragile but I hoped things would improve with time. Never dreamed she would pass and such a young age. RIP Whitney

I was in elementary school when The Bodyguard came out. Consequently, when thinking about that time into my life, the line “And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII will always ….” pops into my head.
It seems like the early ’90s are mostly remembered these days as the Grunge/Nirvana/Kurt Cobain era. But pretty much the only artists I was aware of at that time were the great balladeers like Whitney, Mariah, and Michael Bolton.

Abagond…thanks for sharing that sweet cartoon. I tend to remember my life in music. I hear a song and I can remember exacrly what I was doing at the time it came out. I was a 28 year-old, mother of two young boys when Whitney debuted and, “You Give Good Love” was THE love song of the day!
My boys grew up hearing me belt out everyone of her songs (a source of some deep belly laughs and glee, since I can’t sing a lick!) with them often dancing around with me singing back-up with whatever they could find to use as a mike while Dad rolled tape! Those were wonderfully glorious days for me and my family – and in that sense, my sister was a part of my family. I loved her when she was soaring, and I loved her when she fell – and I will always love her, even though she’s gone. She’s got that elusive peace now, though I’m certain the world won’t let her rest in it any time soon. {smdh}

Didn’t know the ins and outs of her personal life to say if that I’m shocked or not but I will say this, if the reports of her lifestyle over the years are true, then it is not a shock. If a family member of yours was living like this and died, sad may be an answer but not shocked. Enjoyed a lot of your music, now let’s see what we can do for the living.

Like Michael, it’s so sad that in life she was never able to get past the negative publicity and scandals that tarnished her later career. But no, we are not without them, not as long as we remember what they contributed to the world.

CNNs’ headline: “Celebrating Whitney Houston” with a beautiful picture of her, arms wide open.

Have you ever seen a reporting of a funeral that had a picture of someone else lead?
While CNN made Whitney the headline focus, Fox News made Kevin Costner the headline focus literally and visually. It was as if the most relevant thing about the event was what HE had to say about her and not the women herself. No other “news” outlet did this. White culture personified by Fox News always finds a way to make the contribution of Whites the most relevant part of the story.

Hardly. But I do see subtlety. It was very clear they were appealing to their viewership with that lead. I won’t feel guilty about seeing that.

My comment was about Fox News’ REPORTING on her funeral. I thought Costner’s words were genuine, positive and sincere but it should NOT have been the headline of a news paper’s reporting on her funeral. SHE should have been the headline. I stand by that.

Whitney was beautiful and talented…she will be missed. Her voice was pure magic. 😦
She provided the soundtrack for my generation. Her music will live on, just like Michael’s.
I was moved by all the tributes to her. But what really moved me was when Kevin Costner shared the doubts that Whitney had about whether she was good enough or pretty enough. I was stunned by that, because she had gifts that most women would kill to have.
This reveals that despite her beauty and talent, she was deeply insecure. I could never imagine Whitney Houston being that vulnerable, but she was. She was only human…and I love her all the more for it. There is a reason that some entertainers become legends. Their pain and passion is turned into art.
