In the video above a top White American singer, Taylor Swift, sings “September”, the classic song by Earth, Wind & Fire. Here is the original:

Oh my God! That was horrible! No soul in that remake. As bland as white bread lol

Taylor’s version is pretty but kind of boring. The original is more exciting but seems a little cheesy and over the top, especially with some of the comically dated dancing in that video. However, “exciting but cheesy and over the top” would definitely describe America better than “pretty but boring” would.
I’ve always confused “September” with “December 1963”, which I like better:

It was sung by a group of Italian-American guys, but I’m sure the strong beat (one of its best features) comes from the West African influences in American pop music. I’m glad we can enjoy aspects of many different cultures in this country.

This is an interesting thought. Thinking of the black as a reality, of course they would have to take the DNA. That is when they would realize how many black people there are in the USA.
Then they would have to make decisions of which blacks they wanted. What percent of black would be black 1% 10% 20% etc.,.
This is not really a very interesting subject because it appears as though the person proposing the thought thinks blacks are superior or inferior. I believe they are a mixture of all.
Removing any portion of any group of individuals from a nation causes chaos!

‘party on’ also scans and sounds a little better than ‘ba de ya’ or whatever?
‘never a finer day’
yes this is a song that is ok to be stuck in my head all day!

Ok. This is interesting.
I’ve known the Earth, Wind and Fire version of September literally all my life as the song was released the year I was born.
I had heard the Taylor Swift version and didn’t even recognize it as the same song.
That is extra, hella white.

White people love our culture but they don’t love us they want to rap and learn the latest bop but they don’t want to do anything to support our people in the fight for social justice, they are nothing but culture vultures and vampires.

They would make crappy remake of songs!
I was reading an article about the ‘best’ Blues albums of all time. Several white bands took the top spots. Hilarious!

And then I thought that White Americans making crappy cover versions of Black hits was something of the 1950s…
By the way, what made Taylor Swift such a big star? The comments I read above about the song (“No Soul” “pretty but kind of boring”) can be applied to Taylor Swift as a person too. I liked “Shake it off,” but I know enough performers who have better songs and are more charismatic than her.

“Unseasoned bland food”
I think there may be a physiological reason for this, at least for some of us. I know that I and everyone in my immediate family have trouble with peppers burning so badly it is painful. I wish it wasn’t this way, but I’ve tried and tried to build up my sensitivity and nothing works. It’s almost like an allergy, I think.

Gawd, you are such ‘liberal’ pushover. What’s so ‘bland’ about French, Italian, and Spanish cooking? I never found these cuisines bland.

I find Italian spicy in the sense of “spices” rather than “hot.” I do think that a generous use of herbs and spices keeps food from being “bland,” but there are plenty of people who wouldn’t agree.
That said, I’ve had some Italian food that was too heavy on the peppers for me to handle.
I don’t have enough experience with French and Spanish (as opposed to Mexican) cuisine to have an informed opinion.

What, because I said I can’t handle hot (or medium, or some mild) peppers? Excuse me if I don’t see how politics comes into play.
I wasn’t apologizing for it, just explaining. The reason I wish it wasn’t so is because it hinders my enjoyment of certain cuisines and dishes, not because of white guilt or an inferiority complex.

Glad to “hear” that. I can’t stand white people who spend all their time apologizing for existing. Just because somebody black writes something doesn’t always make it true. Nothing wrong with a good deal of European cuisines.

I have to admit that Taylor’s Song was a good one, but its understandable if its not your cup of tea, I think that there was a somewhat irrational response to this cover people just have to let it go.

I’m probably in the minority here but this is the first time I’m hearing this version of September. Taylor Swift sings songs about broken romances, etc so her version is more of a “remember what we had” and fits into the dynamics of her past songs. If you know her music it’s not so much bland as just melodic. She has a different audience than Earth, Wind and Fire. I think that you can like both versions without disparaging either side. For a young white teenage girl sitting in her room listening to this song she would totally relate to it. An older black woman in her 50’s (me) would like the Earth, Wind and Fire version because it reminds me of a great family get togethers and holidays.
