In “A World Without Black History” (2016), the best “Decoded” yet on MTV, Chescaleigh takes Chad to a world where there were never any Black people. His grandfather is dead – because there are no pacemakers or open heart surgery. Mobile phones or personal computers are less advanced. On the radio the music is polka, Irish step dancing, crooning and classical. Potato chips do not taste as good. Light bulbs burn out after a few days. Clothes are boring. New York is a boring-ass town. The US ends at the Mississippi River, never to become big food producer or world power.
“Decoded” is MTV’s weekly video short on US racism, featuring Chescaleigh, aka Franchesca Ramsey. She used to make videos about racism on her own, now and then, but with MTV putting her on a weekly production schedule, we get one every week! However, she just joined “The Nightly Show” with Larry Wilmore, so I do not know how many more we will get.

It could get even crazier and wilder than that. Without the US becoming a great power on the back of African slavery, it would have been under the cultural domination of European great powers, AND the British Empire would have been much weaker. Which means…
France and Germany dominate the world. Not only is there a gigantic francophone country west of the Mississippi, but most of the country’s overseas trade is with Germany and France. Depending on which way this timeline’s history goes, the US aligns with either the French or German sphere of influence. If it’s the latter, this also means constant, brutal land wars with French America to the west. The Mississippi river basin is a no man’s land littered with land mines. Chad’s doppelganger in this universe is a conscript in the US Army, stationed in a pile of pockmarked, bombed out ruins that used to be called Memphis. On a clear day he can see the French-speaking troops across the river.
The music would probably not have much in the way of Irish step-dancing but it would probably be very German. Hope you like Bruckner! Also hope you like sauerkraut, because nasty fermented Northern European cuisine is what’s on the menu. The cars are all second-hand German and French cars, some of which may have been exported for failing inspections in their home markets, much like tens of millions of people in Southeast Asia in our world drive clapped-out Japanese cars that were shipped out of the country for being unroadworthy.
The English sounds funny and is littered with French and German loanwords, everyone knows three languages because they have to, because none of the great books, movies, or songs are in English. Insecure middle-class families name their children Hermann or Francois (or even Joaquín, because Spain and Spanish culture would be much stronger) because they’re cooler than fussy old English names (this happens with American names in Germany today, they call it “Kevinism”). The United States feels like a third-rate imitation of Europe. Older Americans say the younger generation disrespects American values and culture and are corrupted by foreign influences, but nothing can be done about it because America cannot afford to anger other countries.
American workers work long hours in sweatshops to provide cheap labor for northern Europe, Spain, and Mexico (Mexico would be a much more powerful country than the US). Mexican tourists come to New England every autumn to see the sights, they are rude and arrogant (just like American tourists in our world!) because their country is so much more prestigious. They are resented but New England’s economy depends on the money they spend. Alcoholism is rampant. Children, even babies, consume massive amounts of important European soft drinks; they often develop diabetes later in life. Opium poppies are illegally grown all over the country to supply foreign heroin markets; many Americans are addicted.
Americans in this world know what is like to lose a war and suffer military occupation. During the Third Franco-German War of 1939, French troops occupied most of the country until 15 divisions of German troops arrived to throw them out and drag the US further into Germany’s sphere of influence. There was a horrific famine and over five million people died. There are pictures from the ’40s of naked, emaciated American children curled up helplessly, unable to move or even lift their heads because they are so starved.
People live in beaten-down countries like this all over the world–in Lithuania, in Armenia, in Ukraine, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Paraguay, Vietnam. They could have been great powers–many of them once were great powers–but now they are poor and surrounded by powerful countries with little sympathy for them. Without the wealth generated by the exploitation of people of color, Anglo-America would have been one of those places–and black America, cut off from this inheritance, has become such a place, a poor country inside a rich country, where a city street can be the border between the global north and the global south. Perhaps those of us with white skin should consider using our power to redress this massive injustice.
Not that I’m holding my breath, being one of only 4% of white Americans in favor of reparations. What is it going to take, a second civil war that shatters this country into pieces and leaves it in ruins? Because it seems like white Americans would be perfectly willing to start one, some of them even seem to welcome the prospect. They are going mad, I see it every day. What used to be implied is now said out loud, a sneer of contempt has turned into wild-eyed teeth-baring rage. They know their grip on power can no longer be maintained under democracy, they know that they will lose, MUST lose, if what is wrong with this country is set right. Fascism–fascism in America!–is on the move and Donald Trump–Donald Trump!–could have won the Iowa caucus if he played his cards a bit better.

I agree that the US could lurch into fascism. Much of the White American faith in democracy comes from being the current majority, not from profoundly-held political principles. You see that, for example, in voter suppression laws. Or the overriding of democracy in much of Black Michigan, leading to the Flint Water Crisis.

Nonsense, Germany didn’t become a nation until after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, sixty-six years after the Louisiana Purchase. A united Germany failed to dislodge the British as top top dog in two world wars.
If Napoleon hadn’t been the racist prick he was, he would have given Toussaint Louverture and his battle-hardened army a free hand to claim French territory on the North American continent.
I can imagine a powerful alliance of “French Negroes” Allied to the Seminoles of Florida taking on Andrew Jackson and Tecumseh’s Confederacy doing the same in Ohio against William Harrison, with the support of such “French” army. Blacks would have been freed from bondage several generations before 1865.

Prussia uniting Germany was inevitable after Napoleon broke the back of the Holy Roman Empire. The currents of history were flowing directly towards nationalism and national unification, and Prussia, being by far the largest and most powerful German state, was destined to be the one to pull it off. Prussia became an enormously strong country over the course of the 19th century, and her strength was further amplified by absorbing the rest of Germany. It took the combined, focused might of both the British and French empires just to contain Germany. Without African slavery in North America, the British Empire would have been much weaker (before, during, and after the American Revolution) and the French would have never been able to stop Germany from developing a global reach and leaping into the power vacuum that the relative weakness of the British Empire would leave. The later 19th and early 20th centuries would have been the story of the German and French empires contesting for dominance, a story in which the United States would have played the role of a mere pawn.
When two globe-spanning empires go at it, you don’t want to be their pawn.

tankermottind, nothing is inevitable. The Germans, despite being the greatest economic power in Europe never had the reach of the British empire. Germans were scattered all over central Europe, and France even managed to regain Alsace-Lorraine after WWI. Austria remained independent of Germany. “Without African slavery in North America, the British Empire would have been much weaker (before, during, and after the American Revolution) and the French would have never been able to stop Germany from developing a global reach and leaping into the power vacuum that the relative weakness of the British Empire would leave.”
Fascinating! What do you base such bold assertion on? How did African slavery in North America benefit Britain? If they required it as much as you claim, why didn’t they make more extensive use of it in Canada? Germany was stopped twice in the twentieth century when it contended for world power.

The wealth extracted from North America funded the British Navy and allowed them to colonize India, which shot them to #1. Even after the revolution, most of the United States’ trade was with Britain, and it was BIG business, all on the backs of slaves. Slaves in the New World were the financial backbone of the British Empire before India, and American slaves were part of that system. Slavery was not as widespread in Canada because Canada was not as heavily settled and not as amenable to mass production of lucrative cash crops.
No American slave system = poorer, weaker British Empire. Since the US and Britain’s enormous economic and logistical support were all that stood in the way of German victory in World War I (remember that Germany WON in the east in 1917. Russia collapsed–thanks in no small part to a certain Vladimir Lenin who had German support–and Germany threw all their troops on that front into France and nearly won the war then and there), which means German ambitions go unchecked, which means the High Seas Fleet becomes a world-class navy, which means Germany becomes a world-class empire.
By World War II, the other powers were too far ahead and Hitler was (fortunately for everyone else!) screwed from the moment he started the war. Germany had its chance in 1914 and at times came very close to forcing France to the negotiating table. In the counterfactual timeline without the economic benefits to Britain and her daughter countries provided by the American slave system, Germany would have almost certainly won. France could not do it alone. Germany would be a world power, France would be furious and humiliated, and gear up for a rematch a couple of decades down the road, and nobody would have heard of Hitler except some beer hall patrons in Vienna or Munich who are sick and tired of hearing this idiot with the funny moustache harangue them about THE JOOOOOS and conspiracy theories.

@Grojo,
Normally I just ignore your tit-for-tat spats as boorish humdrum, but this time I am going to have to stop your utter nonsense in its tracks.
What you did was racist as sh!t!
You were reminded with the link for perpetual foreigner stereotype, but you just ignored that. Please read it again.
And after reading it once, read it again and again. And then think carefully before you spew out that slew of stereotypes again.
And yes, that is what you did.
Chinese have been in North America since the 16th century, even before both Africans and the English and arrived in significant numbers in the mid-1800s. They also played a huge integral role in building the USA, both its infrastructure and its culture. They are no less American than whites or blacks or Mexican-Americans or Native Americans or Jewish-Americans. Do not compare what Chinese in China do to other Chinese or mixed Chinese in China or other foreign countries as an example of something representative of Chinese-Americans. That just reeks of racism and marks you as an ungainly bigot.
Whether one retains affinity for “that culture” is completely irrelevant in any case. Anyhow, Chinese is the 3rd language of the USA after English and Spanish and ahead of French, and has been part of the languages used in the USA for many many generations. Whether one uses it or not has no bearing on how American one is. It is legal in the courts and one can take their driver’s license test and vote in Chinese if they want.Or they can do it in Spanish. In either case, it is no less American.
It would be as outlandish as saying one cannot be truly American if they still continue to speak or even try to learn English instead of exclusively using one of the major Algonquian or Siouan languages. Or maybe Hawaiian or Aleut, anyone?
Chinese-American food has been an integral part of local American cuisine for 160 years. If a white American eats Chinese food, are they somehow no longer American?
Is the Bing Cherry an American cherry? Or have you been eating this foreign fruit from Washington State?
Even if one (regardless of their ethnic or racial background) were to learn the story of the Monkey King, how is that any less American than learning about Romeo and Juliet or The Three Musketeers? or the Swan Lake ballet? or Don Quixote?
So, please stop that cr@p.

“American” is short for “White American”, if you don’t like it, take it up with the culture, not me.
Your screed about how long and authentic the Chinese experience with America is, is besides the point, you know it as well as I do. Unless you look white, which may be the case for you, since you’re Eurasian, just doesn’t apply to Kiwi or me for reasons of racial classification. So you say, let’s look at the timeline of Britain’s involvement with India:
1588: British ships defeat the Spanish Armada off the coast of Calais, France, to become rulers of the high seas.
1613-14: British East India Company sets up trading post at Surat.
1615-18: Mughals grant Britain right to trade and establish factories in exchange for English navy’s protection of the Mughal Empire, which faces Portuguese sea power.
1751: Robert Clive, age 26, seizes Arcot in modern Tamil Nadu as French and British fight for control of South India.
1764: British defeat the weak Mughal Emperor to become rulers of Bengal, richest province of India.
1773: British East India Company obtains monopoly on the production and sale of opium in Bengal.
1784: Judge and linguist Sir William Jones founds Calcutta’s Royal Asiatic Society. First such scholastic institution.
1786: Sir William Jones uses the Rig Veda term Aryan (“noble”) to name the parent language (now termed Indo-European) of Sanskrit, Greek, Latin and Germanic tongues.
1787-95: British Parliament impeaches Warren Hastings, Governor General of Bengal (1774-85) for misconduct.
1787: British Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade is formed, marking the beginning of the end of slavery.
1792: Britain’s Cornwallis defeats Tipu Sahib, Sultan of Mysore and most powerful ruler in South India, main bulwark of resistance to British expansion in India.
1799: Sultan Tipu is killed in battle against 5,000 British soldiers who storm and raze his capital, Srirangapattinam.
1803: Second Anglo-Maratha war results in British Christian capture of Delhi and control of large parts of India. 1803: India’s population is 200 million.
As the timeline shows, the British navy was the terror of the high seas thirty-one (31) years prior to the introduction of the first blacks in their North American colonies. It wasn’t until 1640 that lifetime slavery became law. I don’t dispute your claim that slavery was crucial to making the system work, but it was only a part of that system. The opium trade with China and other such villainies made up the rest.

Had France not turned racist and imperial, a division of the old and new worlds between the black and white Napoleons might have resulted in a world freed from slavery. I should be mad at you, but your cretinous comments are kind of amusing. He also called his army the sons of the sun, let’s see what you make of it.

“As you know, I enjoy immensely our little debates, but do you have anything substantive to add to my dispute with Kiwi?”—Why should I? I seem to remember you jumping to respond to me when I was clearly talking to Kiwi. Word of advice….stop being so desperate. Then you won’t have to find clever ways to back out of things you drag yourself into.
P.S. You and I are not debating. You and Kiwi are. :)”
Are you as cute as your avatar is? Of course we’re not debating, it’s called flirting my little coquette. 🙂

The more sinister side to the “Black people invented stuff too” trope user is the she is using intellectual gymnastics to feel superior to whites, as if that will fix anything. Not only does it show an underlying inferiority complex, but the person being schooled would quite literally have to be put in a time machine in order to feel the actual effects such history has on them. Aside from that they don’t give a damn.
I was in
Sodom and GomoBerkeley , California a few months a few months ago. When I found out that a lot of the whites that I would meet were “Chads”, I just hung with my crowd. That they were a lot of them were janitors, receptionists, security guards and homeless was really irrelevant. I will never forget, nor regret , the time I spent with them. The only use for Chads is to obtain resources from to use to better yourself with.LikeLike
jefe,
Did you finally get some clarity on the smoking policy of China? You never got around to telling me what was “…was racist as sh!t!” for confronting Kiwi’s hypocrisy by demanding he show as much ‘outrage’ for racist acts done by people who look like him.
Seems to me that ‘Asians’ want to run with the hares when they find it convenient and hunt with the hounds for the same reason. I’m still waiting for proof that I questioned your or Kiwi’s Americanness by pointing out your Chinese origins.
In your desires to hunt with the hounds, you guys ‘forgot’ that “American” really means “White American”. I suspect that Kiwi is jealous of you because you approximate the type better than he can due to your white ancestry.
You can take your troll claim and smoke it for all I care. When I see cant, I’ll call out the canting bastard regardless of any bruised ethnic egos.

“Of course we’re not debating, it’s called flirting my little coquette.”—Two things.
1. You might want to make sure your lie is straight because you just stated “I enjoy immensely our little debates”
2. You are flirting with yourself. In a desperate type of way.

Oh my god, you’ve caught me contradicting myself, how mortifying.

Yes, I’m channeling that great cartoon lover Monsieur Pepe Le Pew my little kitten.

America is like a house with a rotting wood frame and a crumbling foundation. Reconstruction marked the last opportunity for this nation to fix the rot for good. Now we’ll have to tear the whole house down, clear off the lot and start all over again. I shudder to think what that’ll mean for a country like the United States.

For a moment there, Kiwi, I thought No Slappz had hijacked your account. Because your entire argument sounds a lot like the concern trolling you’d get from your average white racist.

Sad, but true. All this outpouring of negativity toward blacks was because I dared suggest that an alliance between blacks under T. Louverture could have ended slavery in the USA long before 1865 and allowed Indians such as Tecumseh’s Confederacy and the Seminoles to keep their lands. The hypocrite pretended that I was advocating the dispossession of Indians because:
“A common theme on this blog is that Whites are foreign invaders occupying Native land. How would Louverture be any less of a foreign invader militarily occupying Native land?”
“Right. Because drooling at the mouth when describing a Black man militarily taking over Native land is not an endorsement of a racist double standard.”
What the poor boob forgot, if he ever knew it, was that the Native land in question was under White control since 1534, 209 years before T. Louverture’s birth. They even fought several wars over it. Seems that Asian anti-racists are as Negrophobic as White ones.
I’m still waiting for Kiwi or jefe to show me how asking Kiwi, if he condemned the racist behavior of some of the Chinese public who gave Lou Jing and her mother a rough time “was racist as sh!t!”

American History has been dumb- ed down decade by decade since 1960 by design.Important inventors Black and White are not taught about because science is neglected.Real History,Mathematics,Logic,Grammar as well.We could research the influence of Rockefeller,Ford,Carnegie foundation investigation by Cox-Reece commission into Communism and foundations in America and direct connection to the dumbing down of a country. Let me ask a question :Why is Africa a mess. Not a Beacon of Science.Engineering,Agriculture or Commerce, Civilization or Humanity.Africa has the greatest amount of important Rare-earth minerals, other important resources which with its gigantic population and presumably a large number of natural geniuses should be in a different circumstance on the world stage. Gee,Slavery and Bondage are still practiced there. Can we blame Whites for that also..Are Mud Houses really the state of the Art of African technology. My opinion is the inventors in question were exceptional thinkers created in the image of god and just happened to be Black. If Blacks were natural geniuses they would be leading America to a new Golden era instead of acting like dead weight and pets of the Jewish,Marxist,Progressive Community. By the way .Francesca is married to a white man and lives in a community which celebrates white European Culture. I Have no problem with that.Good for her for finding someone to marry. I just find her an obnoxious uninformed SJW (SocialJusticeWarrior)Hypocrite.
