Remarks:
This went to #7 on the British charts in 1985, and #36 on the American R&B chart. It was a top ten hit in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and the Netherlands. Stock Aitken Waterman wrote and produced it. They went on to produce 12 number one hits on the British pop charts in the late 1980s – Rick Astley, Mel & Kim, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and so on.
The video seems as good to me now as when I first saw it in the 1980s. I know why too: it is her eyes.
Lyrics:
Say I’m your number one
I only wanna be close to you – say
Say
Say.
Say I’m your number one – your number one
Your number one –
’cause you know I’ll be good to you – say
Say
Say.
Say I’m your number one – won’t you ?
They say I’m crazy
They say that I’m a fool.
And I feel so helpless because love can be so cruel.
But I’m just waiting and burning up inside.
Come tomorrow
Come tomorrow
Will you still be mine ?
Say I’m your number one – your number on
Your number one –
In only wanna be close to you.
Say I’m your number one – your number one
Your number one.
‘Cause you know I’ll be good to you – say
Say
Say.
Say I’m your number one – won’t you
You may be tempted and sometimes led astray.
But I know
But I know your regret it very next day.
I sit and wonder whenever we’re apart
Would you do it
Would you do it
Would you go and break my heart ?
Say I’m your number one – your number on
Your number one –
In only wanna be close to you.
Say I’m your number one – your number one
Your number one.
‘Cause you know I’ll be good to you – say
Say
Say.
Tell me that nobody else will do –
Say
Say
Say your number one
Your number one
Your number one
…
Say
Say
Say your number one
Your number one
Your number one

I have heard this song before and I liked it a lot when I heard it, I wonder where this woman is now. She sure was very talented. MUCH more talented than most of today’s artists.

I loved the song (No1) by Princess…It was one of the few authentic British African/Caribbean soul songs of the 80’s to reach chart level. One of few UK known Black artists. As well as the other ones you highlighted too Bulanik!

I remember Loose Ends! I have posted one or two of their songs.
Soul II Soul was played to death in the States, especially “Back to Life”. I hated that song back then because they overplayed it, but I can see now that it was a good song.

I loved this song…also loved Jaki Graham, Inner City…house music and the black British music scene in London back then was definitely on point.
I also loved early techno soul– Planet Rock, Afrika Bambaataa and the Grandfather of them all: George Clinton/Funkadelic “(Not just) Knee Deep” — best song ever!

@Bulanik; No, I didn’t think they sounded English. They just sounded soulful and funky.

Yes! Bulanik…I found both artists to be extraordinary and original. I’ve played the Yolonda Charles video even more times. Her acoustic funk guitar playing is so articulate n’ fresh, along with her singing, when you listen to it on powered speakers.
