Black Power (fl. 1966-1974) was a movement for change among Blacks in the US that largely took the place of the civil rights movement after 1968, when Martin Luther King, Jr was killed. By 1976, the FBI had all but destroyed its political wing.
The civil rights movement sought to achieve integration with Whites through non-violence. The way King achieved these undermined both:
- Non-violence: King used non-violent Black protesters to egg Whites into violence. That shamed the US before the world at the height of the Cold War, when it supposedly stood for freedom, democracy and equality. That led to laws like the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, ending Jim Crow in the South.
- Integration: But such laws did little to change the more subtle racism in the North, while White violence persuaded many Blacks that Whites would never willingly accept them as equals.
And then, Dr King, with Christian cheek turned, was shot dead. Riots in 125 cities followed. Black Power arose from the ashes.
The Black Power movement had started three years before when Stokely Carmichael marched with Dr King from Selma to Montgomery. He tried to get Blacks in Lowndes County, Alabama to vote. Instead of voting for Democrats or Republicans, they created their own party, the Freedom Organization, complete with its own people standing for office. Instead of a donkey or an elephant as their party’s symbol, they had a black panther.
Black Panther parties spread across the country. The best known one was in Oakland, California, led by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton. It took ideas from Fanon, Mao and Che. In time it would offer free breakfasts, free health care, a school and its own men under arms to fight police brutality.
The FBI saw this as a huge threat. Its Cointelpro operation was already undermining communists. It was a simple matter to do the same to the Panthers. The Panthers and their offshoots were filled with FBI spies, like Richard Aoki. They turned the leadership against itself and worked with the police to have them locked up in prison or tied up in court. They even had the Chicago police kill Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.
By the middle 1970s, most of the Black Power leadership was dead, in prison or in exile. Angela Davis, who won her case in court and got out of prison, was the exception not the rule. Just ask Mumia.
The Black Power movement’s lasting effects:
- Black pride,
- Black studies at universities, leading to greater knowledge of Black history,
- using the word “Black” instead of “Negro”,
- Blacks looking down on those who try to be White,
- Kwanzaa,
- natural hairstyles,
- spoken word poetry,
- more Black content from museums and publishers.
Underlying most of these is the idea that Blacks should not look up to Whites or pin their hopes on them. Blacks should create their own culture, their own institutions, live by their own values, that as a colonized people they need to unbrainwash themselves.

Nice post. Although I don’t think the Black Power movement was just from 1966-1974. It’s still going on. The struggle for our people is a an ongoing struggle. There are many people doing grassroots work. They may not get coverage on the nightly news…but we’re still out here putting in work.

Black Power is what made me. Former Panthers ran my pre-school and the NOI were there later in my life.
Integration was never an issue as long as we approached it from the equal or dominant position and not the prone.
Being able to say, ‘Eff you. You cannot do anything to me nor for me’ was always inculcated into to our frame of mind.
It wasn’t until I visited the South that I began to be called an ‘upitty (negro)’ (whatever that is).

Wow, an Irish-American whining about ‘favoritism’? How did the Irish get out of being among the poorest Americans if not through the favoritism shown them by their corrupt political machines? Jobs like cops, firemen and sanitation men came to be associated with white ethnics not because they were uniquely qualified for them but because they used raw political muscle to monopolize them. It’s hard to say if akci was really an informant. The evidence for it is based only on a few documents. One oddity that is circumstantial is the FBI didn’t have a file on him whereas they had files on the other Panther members. That’s kind of like a red flag.

I think Black power and Black centrisim are the only options Black Americans have. I don’t trust “integration” or the arguments for diversity. I belive that is code for white interference.
The arguments for reparations are strong but I don’t see it happening legslativly at first. Following the Jewish repartions example it took a law suit against the German goverment to get it before their legeslator. Reparations are needed to fufill a moral obligation and white people were the primary oppressors but the U.S. goverment also benefited from slavery in the South from monies generated from the cotton picking boom at the height of the plantation era.
Those sales increased the GNP which enriched the country as a whole. The 40 acre and a mule promise never materialized after slavery ended. Jim Crow followed and was later replaced with the prison industrial complex. Coates has much more detail and documentation to add to what i have scanty laid out.
If reparations are directed at white people soley it won’t go anywhere. Picture those white progressives in Seattle with their clenched teeth and funny faces when Marissa Johnson called them out on their white supremecy.
I think Coats and scholars like him need to team up with the ACLU and develop the case for reparations and file it against the U.S. government. That would force a response. As been pointed out elsewhere reparations in legislative form go no where within the legislator. It needs to de directed at the U.S. Goverment because it profited, aided and abetted slavery. The plaintiff would be all Black Americans.
Mirkwood raised some questions:
Blacks would not have to prove a direct slavery connection. Saying they must sounds like something a Republican would say. Proving three generations would be enough.
Reprerations also entails all the dicrimination, violence and atrocities that followed the end of slavery so tying it to just slavery is unjust.
Mirkwood also brought up the billionaire factor. It’s likely the whatever aid they received would be returned to the Black community. In fact wealthy Black Entrepreneurs would find that reparations would opon an investment oppertunity within the black.community.
Mirkwood . “Maybe we should limit it to the poverty line?” A little less.the 30% of Blacks live below the poverty line. Denying.the other 7o% even if some of those are what you.consider rich isn’t Justice.
Mirkwood “Where would the money come from ? Translation. He thinks it would take away from Bernie’s FDR style programs.
Writing checks for reparations wouldn’t end well paticularly if the structural and institutional racism isn’t addressed at the same time. A massive influx of money would create a speculative real estate market within Black communties, the bubble would be followed by implosion and the Banks and the corporations would win again. Predatory lending and racial steering are still practiced in many parts of the U.S.
In my onion reparations need to revolve around economic empowerment within Black communities. Business loans for Black business at fixed low rates. Mortgages within Black communities fixed at low rates. No proerty tax . Tax rates cut by 50%. The police live where they work, wear body cams and are answerable to a citizen committee made up of private citizens and not real estate developers or former cops. Public Schools funded soley by federal dollars with no strings attached. Black educators within those communities developed their own curriculums. Abagond put forward the idea of a GI type bill for higher education. The problem today is that Blacks with higher educations don’t go back to the communities they came from because their isn’t an economy their to support the incomes their educations would generate. That’s why economic incentives in place within Black communities would allow a return to their communities.
Black dollars need to remain within Black communities. I don’t know the figures but I understand that the majority of dollars Blacks spend in the economy goes to other groups outside of their communities. Some have said it’s not possible to separate from white economics. Maybe that’s not needed. Communities that produce goods for trade would want to attract part of the white economy and their dollars.
Their would be a set time period for reparations. Maybe 50 years. The idea isn’t just to even out the economic level field but to give Blacks a distinct economic advantage to make up for the last 200 years of American history.
It sounds like what I’m proposing is “the boot strap argument”. I guess its is but I think it will work if the economic and judicial barriers are removed. It also sounds like I’m arguing for segregation but the difference is that its voluntary. Historical segregation was meant to marginalize and impede economic progress. What I’m suggesting is meant to enhance economic progress.
I don’t believe the current justice sysytem can be reformed. It’s set up to siphon Black and lower classes directly into the prison system because prisons need to be filled in order to justify their existence and provide jobs.
A buffer zone needs to be set up between the justice system that is white centric system with a more locale black centric justice sysytem under its tuledge. Independent yet able to send truly violent offenders away. Such a systm would save thousands of blacks being sent off to prision.
Any prisoner convicted of a felony who does the time needs to have full citizens rights returned.when released from prison. The only exemption would be pedophiles.
Now or cost. Some numbers like 14 trillion dollars has been floated out their but I think it could be done for a fraction of that. The Government would loose some tax revenue and Bankers would make less on loans. It would cost the government directly in education. But education is an investment and educated people produce more in society and don’t need other social services like food stamps, welfare ect. So the government would save money their. Also the increase in economic productivity out weighs the monies spent setting up these “free trade zones”. Republicans love the idea of free trade zones so lets give them some. lol
Lastly Mirkwood thinks that reparations will “increase racism”. It doesn’t matter what white people think or feel if whites they can’t interfere within your community.

Mirkwood, it doesn’t matter if today’s Black millionaires or billionaires don’t need the compensation. Injustices happened within the history of their families. Justice should be blind and not based on race or class.
If something like what I’m proposing ever happened Blacks with the financial means would invest within these communities further empowering them.

The “Irish power” strategy, so to speak, was to use their voting power in cities to take over political machines and pass out city jobs and contracts to fellow Irish. Using Irish votes, in other words, to control (largely Wasp) tax dollars.
That strategy has been largely unworkable for Blacks: by the time they had the votes to carry it out, White flight (in which the Irish took part) had taken most of the tax base with it. And much of what little is left is taken by suburban Whites, like those White police officers who, for some strange reason, are found patrolling Black parts of the city – where people need those very jobs.

Equality of justice is suppose to be blind. That’s an ancient concept that has nothing to do with the subtle color-blind racism that some whites use.
The argument isn’t about class. It’s about the moral obligation of this country to deal with its past atrocities.
Did the Jews who argued for reparations from Germany bring up the subject of class? Did Germany use class as an argument to deflect away from their crimes? Of course not because were talking about crimes against humanity.

Just because you’re a rich n***r doesn’t mean you don’t suffer racism. Some recent examples: Oprah, Otis Graham, Dr. Skip Gates. Mirkwood Said “Yes, but we’re talking about money meant to compensate people who have suffered wrongs.”
I already answered that but lets take it this direction.
It took almost 15 years for the German government to start payout reparations to holocaust survivors. The payouts were in part to survivors directly as well as the Israeli government over a few decades. Are you saying that any survivors that became millionaires during the payout period should have given up their reparations ? Are you suggesting that the oppression of the Jews under Hitler’s short stint in history are greater then the 200 years of oppression against blacks in the U.S. ?
Mirkwood said “You see, once you take away the economic issues, Black Power can fizzle and die because there’s simply no need for it.”
Lets dig into this a bit. What is it that your afraid of ? You think Black culture isn’t worth preserving ? Why is it that all white communities that are prosperous and normal are fine but you find the idea of an all black community that is prosperous as problematic and a threat ? As been shown in this blog Blacks have to overcompensate in order to compete within our current economic system. If given an equal economic field, Blacks would outperform whites because they have developed a work ethic to compensate for how things are today while whites generally are use to entitlement when it comes to jobs.
Is that what you are afraid of ? Competition ?
Its my opinion that the mark of an egalitarian society is rooted in the equality of justice not necessarily in guaranteed economic outcomes.
Why should self made millionaires be penalized more for their hard work ? I don’t have a problem with them paying more taxes but their not what’s wrong with this country.

That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? What can we make the white person give up in the NAME of a Level Playing Field?
Unless you’re stealing it from me, or I’m giving it DIRECTLY to you, how does me giving up anything make your life better, rather than just making mine worse?
I’m not blaming my failures on anyone. Fears, yes, I fear a mob of Blacks, armed or not. They see I have something they don’t, BUT they’ve been told it’s not their fault, whites CHEATED to get ahead of the nonwhites. So they have no particular compunction about using force to take it away from me, because I don’t DESERVE it, and they somehow do.
No explanation how THEY “deserve” it other than by existing.
I fear America being overthrown by violent ingrate Blacks, OR at least the domestic ingrates keeping us “busy” while some foreign power picks us clean.
6 of 1, right?
I’ve helped out in South Africa, Rhodesia, and Haiti. They were thriving countries…until Blacks took over.
My parents lived in Detroit. That was a good city, my parents have the pictures to prove it…until Blacks took over. Celebrating with a week-long riot that drove out not only whites, but blacks who for some reason believed their skin color would not protect them against their violently acquisitive brethren!
Whites gave it up…gave up too much…and look what happened in those places!
As to the “we”, I’m one of the ones getting blamed for slavery, and one of the ones negatively affected by Affirmative Action, so if I’m getting the blame and burden for being white, why don’t I at least get to take the credit for being white too?
And if Blacks are going to BE that burden, why also sap from us the strength needed to CARRY the burden?
I didn’t create or OWN slaves, but I still get blamed for it. My ancestors were Union soldiers, so I get the blame for THAT too! In the last 2 years, 797 people have called my ancestors “chumps” for fighting on the Union side. Are you going to be #798?
Is getting rid of slavery considered giving something up, or contributing to others giving it up? Or is it just normal and invisible?

If people want equal authority they have to take equal responsibility.
(And this is the essence of Black Power.)
I think the ‘white flight’ that you speak of is really more of a talent drain – most of the talented Blacks left as well. Race has little to do with what causes your fears. If being ‘white’ is all that mattered Appalachia and the Southern (mostly white) sundown towns would not exist – they would be Beverly Hills.

So that’s why you didn’t answer me.
If being white is all that mattered, poor whites or unemployed whites should be something I made up. That is, if “White Privilege” existed the way it’s purported to on Websites like this.
Note those Appalachian and southern white towns don’t burn themselves down. That better behavior–however slight–is what White Privilege is founded on TO ME.
Remember when “Privilege” used to be a good word? Or at least not the four-letter word it is now?
My dictionary uses the old definition, “Extra benefit or access earned by meritorious behavior”
Or if not based on culture, then what is it based on? Aliens? Time-Travel? Magic?
It is kind of ironic that blacks fled Detroit (And other places) as Blacks took over. (And yes, the capitalization IS important, as I noted earlier about my professor and such)
Like I said earlier, they feared skin color wouldn’t protect them from their violently “acquisitive” counterparts. The good must ALWAYS fight or flee the bad! And in most States, fighting it is illegal, especially outside your own home!
So I take it you use the Booker T Washington version of Black Power, instead of the WEB Dubois and Talented Tenth version?
A nation is more than about jobs and money. (Although those help!) It is about the kind of people who lived there, have roots there, and whose ancestors are buried there.
But whites in both US and EU have forgotten this because we are forbidden to value our own identity, revere our own history (written negatively as “oppression” and “exploitation” that requires endless apologies and “redemption”), and have become addicted to junky disposable pop culture where values and meanings change according to what is hot on TV.

The “Natives” were actually invaders from Mongolia, no more invited than us. They tried to run us out of our country, and then every time they failed, we took more land as a “fine”.
Why do whites NOT have the right to deport people who are no longer our property, thus no longer our problem?
Remember, in Africa, we got ran out of our own countries.
Who determines who gets to stay? Is it Might Makes Right? Borders&Law? Who BUILT the country?

When I think of Black Power, I think of white cities burning, endless demands for “reparations”, forgetfulness that whites were the ONLY group that banned slavery, and forgetfulness that we’ve already spent trillions on Welfare.
Why is White Power bad compared to that?
And isn’t Black Power blaming every white person–and slavery that’s been over for 150+ years–for their ills? Rather than say, their own peoples’ failure to keep the bad ones in line?

We as whites are the only ones NOT allowed, no, we are *forbidden* to value our own identity, revere our own history (written negatively as “oppression” and “exploitation” that requires endless apologies and “redemption”).
So why should Blacks expect to “empower” themselves at our expense, both literally and figuratively?

Are you? When you talk about “empowerment”, is burning down a city “empowering? Is shooting cops and throwing a tantrum when they shoot back empowering or just being a hypocrite?
And is there any nonwhite group who banned slavery?

What’s noteworthy about this super imbecile on steroids is that IT REPRESENTS millions if not tens of millions of Amerikan people who harbor these same exact beliefs and feelings. Many of whom will greet you daily wearing happy, but fake, smiles on their faces but when in the comfort of their all-white enclaves let their guard down to reveal their true natures – like this pathetic clown here.
A teachable moment … Black parents should expose their children to the reality of this type of racism. It could indeed save their lives at some point.
ITS presence here is good for nothing but entertainment and ridicule.
I guess THEY don’t like it when we refuse to come and engage them at StormFront. Whatever would they do if Black people didn’t exist? Probably consume each other with a quickness!

I don’t know. How DID we avoid consuming ourselves with or without quickness from the 1860s to the 1960s? Blacks kept a REAL low profile, for all intents and purposes, they didn’t exist. I could mention “Black Crime” in the 1950s, and get a lot of blank or incomprehensible stares. If I warned the people of Ferguson that 60 years later, Blacks would burn down their down, they would be incapacitated with laughter.
And we should not forget the “You Wouldn’t Say That To My Face”™ response. Implying heavily that if confronted with truth, Blacks respond with a right hook, right?
Is burning down our cities a “teachable moment”? “Blacks want to be treated as equals–until they don’t” kinda thing?
Is or is not this site just an echo chamber where you discuss how HORRIBLE whites are–but no effort to leave the country, just CHANGE it to be better for you, worse for us?

Actually, whites don’t GET a teachable moment, do we? No way to tell which ones have genuine smiles, and which ones are fake and plotting to burn down our cities in their little all-Black mobs.
Reading sites like this allows whites to see what Blacks REALLY think of us–but what are we gonna do about it?
You notice the ones that preach equality the loudest live the furthest away, and/or have bodyguards? Clinton, Great All-Father of Multiculturalism, has an office in Harlem…He also has Secret Service for LIFE!

The Black Agenda Report did an interesting review of that PBS documentary, saying it is a liberal/capitalist view of the Black Panthers:

I enjoyed “The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution” (Shown recently PBS). I went into it expecting it to offer a liberal view of the BPP and it wasn’t as skewed as I’d expected. I too noticed the relative lack of emphasis on Communism. They were the Black Panther PARTY for Self Defense after all. Anyone viewing ONLY that documentary would be clueless as to why the word PARTY was part of the name. At the risk of being flamed here, I’d also say that the documentary equally omitted anything that would paint the party founders and members as anything but noble and upstanding.
The thing is, the rise and fall of the BPP did not occur in a vacuum. Nothing really does. Trying to sum up something as complex as the BPP, from origins to rise, to decline, in 1.5 hours would be impossible. So, they took the “Vanguard of the Revolution” story and ran with that. I think that was smart. It gives context and a backstory to the “Cop Haters” narrative which, helps break down barriers to gaining further knowledge. So, in my humble and largely irrelevant opinion, it’s probably a good starting point for many people to get them interested in learning more. It leaves you with questions and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Somewhat off-topic side note: I find it fascinating that Ronald Reagan was governor of CA during that time and later created the War on Drugs AKA New Jim Crow as president. I haven’t had time yet to research things (other than the Mulford Act) that he did back then… Just wondering if he just as racist a Governor.
