RIP, Maya Angelou. A wonderful writer and person.
I remember meeting her once, after she had given a talk about “Power” at one of London’s universities.
She was courteous to the white people there, but she was far more interested in listening — listening — to the young black and Asian women present, who sat together and lunched together, and seemed to form an informal band.
We were all in awe, and not just by her magnetism. But her kindess, and warmth and a certain sparkle in her eyes. She moved her mouth deliciously and what voice came out from it: tv never captured it.
She had a beautiful, sensual walk, too.

My father introduced the poem “Phenomenal Woman” to me as a young teen. I loved my father for that. My favorite Maya Angelou book was “Singing and Swinging and Getting Merry Like Christmas.” Along with “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” She was a phenomenal woman.

I wonder if she ever realized that in backing Obama she had betrayed her Civil Rights heritage and become an advocate for the oppression of brown people worldwide. I was not surprised at Oprah carrying water for Obama. After all, she’s a media mogul. I expected Angelou to be more ethical. She was a symbol of our quest for justice for the black populace and should have been more discerning about who she was leading her admirers to endorse. I expect such bias from media moguls and politicians. Not from poets. You know, I will never look at black leaders the same ever again. I will judge them from now on on where they stood on the mass murderer in chief in the Error of Obama.

• Why is Angelou much accepted and celebrated by the mainstream press?
• Why is Angelou “phenomenal”? Is it because of the rich life she led or is it because of important contributions to culture through her writing or something else or a mixture?
I think the first time I ever saw her was an Oprah interview where Oprah looks adoringly at Angelou the whole time, this was a trigger for me to not bother finding out anything about Angelou. I know of course that her first book is an autobiographical account of her coming up in Apartheid America. Is that book why she is revered by many?
