Note: This post is modelled directly on posts I did on the Aboriginals of Australia and the Kyrgyz of Afghanistan, which in turn come from National Geographic articles. All photographs are by William Albert Allard, an Anglo-American photographer for National Geographic.
Anglo Americans are the white people of North America whose home language is English. They have lived in the Americas for 400 years and currently account for 23% of its people.
Population: 224 million (2014) – about 64% of the US, 59% of Canada and 40% of North America as a whole. The African diaspora, for comparison, comes to about 188 million.
Language: English.
Religion: mostly Protestant Christianity. Despite the efforts of scientists, most still follow (or at least give lip service to) the old religion of Jesus and the Bible, complete with Heaven, Hell, the Devil and television preachers. Man was created by God, yet evolution is “probably true”.
History: They lived for a couple of thousand generations in small, nomadic bands, as befits a hunter-gatherer existence, moving in their own rhythms about the vast expanse of West Eurasia. They first appeared in Roman records in AD 98 as the Anglii in what is now the part of northern Germany near Denmark. They arrived in Britain in the 400s, in North America in the 1600s. The next 300 years were a horror show of massacres, disease, land theft, racialized slavery of Africans and forced but failed integration of Native Americans.
Land: Most of the temperate zone of North America, nearly all of it taken from Native Americans. The east and middle west has vast amounts of farmland, about as much as China. Much of the far west is dry or mountainous.
Housing: Most live in towns and cities. They live in cookie-cutter houses along paved roads. They have cable television, video games, Internet, mobile phones, running water, flush toilets and cars. Houses are made of wood and brick, divided into rooms. They are not colourful inside. Electricity is not solar-powered. They cook indoors. On average they move house about once every five years.
Transport: Cars, trucks, planes.
Work: They grow soybeans, fruit, maize, make machines (cars, planes, computers, etc), machine parts, chemicals and medicine. Many work in offices, shops or homes. Most work for money and live in debt.
- Women: do most of the cooking, cleaning and child care.
Prices: the average 2012 prices in terms of median Anglo-American household income ($57,000 or 57kg of silver or 1900 crowns) in the US:
- new car = 0.5 years
- house = 2.6 years (+ twice that in interest payments to the bank)
- bride = not bought
Wealth: For most, their main form of wealth is their house and the small piece of land it stands on (generally about 0.1 hectares). In many cases it is only partly paid for and can be lost to the bank if they fall on hard times.
Dress: Since 1900, fewer hats, dresses and layers of clothing, more blue jeans, T-shirts and casual dress.
- Bare breasts: rare in public.
Sport: American football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey.
Health: Obesity, drug abuse and gun violence are serious public health issues. The most commonly abused drugs: tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, cocaine, hallucinogens and methamphetamine.
Food: Like the Native Americans who came before them, their diet is heavily based on maize. They get most of their food from maize in one form or other: Corn Flakes, beef, cooking oil, high fructose corn syrup, etc.
- Fear-factor food: hot dogs.

I’ve noticed that Latinos sometimes use ‘Anglo’ to describe white Americans. I suppose it’s become short form for Anglo-Saxon (English-German).
Most white Americans are mixed with some combination of English, German and Irish – if their family has been in the U.S. long enough.
It’s curious how there is no common term Anglo-Saxon-Irish. I suppose it’s because the Irish were looked down upon when they first immigrated to the U.S. ’cause they were dirt poor due to England oppressing them by taxing the hell out of them and leaving them with nothing to eat but rotting potatoes.

I don’t think it is strictly related to the fraction of where their ancestry came from, but more whether they identify with the Anglo American ethnic group.
For example, if a 6th generation German / Scotch-Irish American meets an 8th generation English/French/Dutch/Irish American at church, they might see each other as identifying with the same ethnic group (ie, white English-speaking American) despite having no intersection in their actual ethnic ancestry in the past 200 years. It is even possible to be part Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, even Polish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. (even remote Native American or African ancestry) and still identify socially and culturally with Anglo-American, esp. if all 4 of their grandparents were born, raised and educated in the USA, identified as white and speak English as their native language.
I suspect that most of them would identify with Anglo-Canadians more readily than non-Anglo Americans living in their same town. Conversely, Anglo-Canadians might identify more easily with them than they do with the Quebecois, the Metis, or Asian-Canadians.

This is a left-over post from White History Month. I wanted to get it up before Asian American History Month started. I posted it on April 30th.
Not every post in May will necessarily be about Asian Americans, just more than in most months.
National Geographic presumes a middle-class, suburban White American readership and applies this exoticizing gaze to people who are different. It is something I have noticed since at least age 11. It gets under my skin, partly because it is hard to put into words. In writing this post I tried to flip it back on them to put it in a clearer light. But, PLEASE NOTE, I did not go all the way:
1. There are no pictures of bare-breasted Anglo-American high school girls.
2. I did not take a rural community that Preserved Traditional Ways and make them the culturally “authentic” representatives for the whole. For that I would have used the Amish.
I intended to do both for this post, but somehow could not bring myself to do it. It felt like taking an axe to my post. Maybe some day I will do it as a parody.

LOL Having lived practically everywhere in the ole’ U.S. the city that is Salt Lake, Utah was no exception-and your previous statement about “Pleasantville” is almost (I kid you not) word-for-word exactly what I said upon living there between 1998-2000! What’s more interesting is that Salt Lake is actually the “wild(est) area” of Utah, because it’s pretty much the only place to (legally) buy beer on Sundays, more “diverse” groups of people (mostly a few, but growing Black, Tongan,and Mexican population), and even a few gay clubs sprinkled here and there. That being said, I do remember them having delicious Americana types of food, like their scones, gigantic pizzas, and even their hot wings were actually spicy-though their peach cobbler left a Lot to be desired because they tend to cook them in Dutch ovens which made them almost gummy, yuck! lol

Well, you stayed there right after the movie Pleasantville came out, so it is easy for you to associate with that movie.
During my first trip I did not stay in Salt Lake City proper, but I stayed with Mormon family in Bountiful, UT. At the time Bountiful, a city of 40,000, was over 98% white and a whopping 0.1% African-American (it has dropped to an eye-dropping 96% white and 0.25% black today). It was a few years before Pleasantville, so I felt I had just stepped into “Father Knows Best”. They talked and acted in a way that was just like a 1950s white small city TV program. Then a few years later, when the movie Pleasantville came out, I said to myself, OMG, Bountiful, UT.
I remember that, as mormons do not take caffeine, it was very very difficult to find a cup of coffee or a coke. I went to see the movie “Dances with Wolves” and could get a coke at the concession counter.
The 2nd time in the early 2000s I went was to visit my Chinese-American cousin who actually lives in Salt Lake City. When I arrived to her house, she had a Spanish-speaking Mexican-American family over to her house and I got to speak Spanish with them right away and my Aunt from Massachusetts came to visit also. Anyhow, the 2nd visit was not so “Pleasantville-ish” (well, maybe more like after Pleasantville turned into colour). I could even find a place to get a cup of coffee that time.
This might be a good topic for Asian American history too. Promontory Summit was right outside Salt Lake City and connected the town to the Transcontinental Railroad. A few thousand Chinese settled there and formed a Chinatown there, and later Japanese settled there and formed a Japantown. Even Wikipedia has a picture of a Chinese laundry there in 1910.
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/SLC%2C_1910.jpg)
Both communities were demolished in the mid-20th century as were most Chinatowns and Japantowns strung out across the cities and towns in the West.

@KOT,
Welcome back.
I have been to Maine and Utah. While they are both very WHITE and largely Anglo, they are not the same exactly. If anything, those small cities in UT are a lot more Pleasantvillish than the ones in ME. They don’t gawk the same way people in ME do. They act just like they do in their creepy Pleasantville way. They might start talking sporadically about Jesus or something, but otherwise I thought they were carbon copies of Pleasantville.
The culture of Maine people didn’t seem so based on 1950s television, but more a combination of white people in eastern Southern New England (ie. Massachusetts) with a touch of Quebecois. Many of the towns actually have large Roman Catholic francophonic populations living alongside the Anglos. And they don’t speak in 1950s white accents, dress up in 1950s suburban clothing or name their children those corny names or sporadically talk about Jesus. You literally feel like pre-civil rights white America in those Utah towns.
Yet, UT people did have significant Chinese, Japanese and Native American populations in the 19th century and early 29th century, so they are not so much freaked out by them. Maine people will gawk more. The Native Americans there have been gone for 250 years and they never had any significant Asian population.
Talk about gawking – imagine my interracial family out in public in Alabama in the late 60s -70s. It’s like those people pressing the stopwatch freezing everyone into place.

“The Role of White People in Ending Racism
Racism is contrary to the fundamental nature of every human being. All human beings begin life caring deeply about all other human beings. Until we ourselves are hurt – put down, ignored, threatened, beaten, criticized, isolated, and so on – each of us wants all people to be treated well. None of us, including white people, would ever participate in the racist mistreatment or oppression of other humans unless we had first been hurt. However, once hurt, we are vulnerable to hurting others – by participating in oppressive systems and acting oppressively as individuals.
In an oppressive society, few people escape being hurt in ways that leave us feeling scared and bad about ourselves. It is when we are scared or when we feel bad about ourselves that we are most vulnerable to believing racist messages.
In a racist society there is a constant barrage of racist messages and practices – from family, friends, acquaintances, schools, the media, and many other institutions. No one can grow up in such an environment and escape its effects. In this way the society installs racism on every white person. It does so regardless of how strongly or for how long we actively resist.
White People Act as Agents of Racism
As a result of these hurts, all white people have been conditioned to accept the lies of racism and to carry racist feelings. Some white people stop questioning these feelings and act out these “beliefs” in hateful and oppressive ways. Other white people intellectually reject the content of racist messages and try to treat people targeted by racism respectfully and as equals. But even when those of us who are white act with goodwill toward people targeted by racism or actively engage in fighting racism, attitudes connected with racism (unjustified fears, the seeking of approval, feelings of superiority, etc.) surface from time to time and must be battled in order for us to act consistently according to our best thinking.
We white people are pulled to act on the basis of the racism we’ve heard and seen, acting sometimes subtly and unawarely and other times overtly and harshly.
Racism Hurts White People
Racism greatly damages the lives of people targeted by it. Racism also hurts those of us who are white. (This is true of any group that acts out oppression at another group.) This is far from the damage inflicted on the targets of racism, but it corrupts our humanity and compounds the ways we already feel bad about ourselves. Not standing up against racism erodes our integrity and undermines our sense of goodness and self-worth.
White people become separated from the majority of the world’s people, know little about them, and miss close involvement in the lives of a rich variety of people. Racism also erodes relationships between white people – we do not want to be associated with “that white racist” or “that white liberal.” Racism leaves us feeling hopeless about actually eliminating racism and creating a just and equitable society.
White People Ending Racism and Healing from the Hurts of White Racism
United to End Racism and Re-evaluation Counseling have valuable experience and tools for white people to use in ending racism. We have learned that any and all “oppressor roles” (the role played by a person who has been conditioned to be an agent of oppression) are installed by hurting people very deeply. White people’s oppressive behavior arises from deep emotional damage. Sustained emotional work is therefore required for those of us who are white people to free ourselves from racism. To create a just society, white people must not only inform ourselves fully about racism and take action to end it, but must also heal from the damage caused by being exposed to racism and by having participated in it.
United to End Racism has found that white people taking turns listening to each other in pairs and in groups is an effective way to do this emotional work. Those of us who are white need to remember and to tell our stories about the racism in our lives and assist one another to release the intense feelings that underlie these stories. These stories can include early experiences with racism, the racist lies we were told, the times we acted out racism, and the racist attitudes that were held by the people around us, as well as the successes we’ve had in fighting racism.
To do this work, we white people need settings in which we can be open about racism without being blamed or shamed, where we know we are cared about and respected. Under these conditions, we can remember and tell what happened to us with regard to racism and release the painful emotions from these experiences. And we need to learn to do this work with one another as white people. It is the job of white people, not people targeted by racism, to do the work to both stop white people from perpetuating racism and to help white people heal the damage we carry.
With emotional release, white people are able to think afresh about these experiences. We become partners with people targeted by racism in their efforts to heal from having lived in a racist society. We begin taking effective steps to end racism along with freeing ourselves of the effects of racism, all of which improves our lives in countless ways.
White People as Allies to People Targeted by Racism
An important part of ending racism and all other oppressions is to develop alliances between those targeted by the oppression and those outside the targeted group. Eliminating racism requires the development of strong alliances among groups of people targeted by racism and also with white people who are committed to ending racism. These white allies are people who have decided to work for the liberation of all people targeted by racism. We, white people in this ally role, demonstrate by our actions and words that we support the goals and visions of groups targeted by racism and work alongside them. In United to End Racism, we have learned a great deal about building these alliances and about white people becoming effective allies.
Steps Toward Becoming White Allies
There are many ways for white people to work as allies in eliminating racism. Some of these include:
Taking visible stands against all forms of racism by both backing anti-racism organizations led by people targeted by racism as well as standing independently as a white person against racism;
Working on and eliminating our own racism and healing the places we have been silent and passive about racism;
Standing against one of the effects of racism by reminding targeted people of their goodness, intelligence, competence, and the importance of their relationships with one another;
Actively seeking correct information and healing from the ways we have been unaware and uninformed;
Building long-term friendships with people targeted by racism and challenging the racist messages of separation, difference, and fear;
Training and building groups of white allies committed to eliminating racism by assisting other whites to heal the damage done to us by racism;
Understanding that being allies to people targeted by racism is for our own benefit since it involves reclaiming our full humanity and having a world right for everyone, a world where everyone matters.
For more information about white people healing the damage done by racism, see the pamphlet Working Together to End Racism, a publication of United to End Racism.”

If whites were more apt to believe black people about the ills and harms of racism, I doubt there would be any market, or a need, for Tim Wise, or other whites that talk primarily to whites.
A few questions-
Do white organizations and COURTS across the USA accept and believe the witness of black people testifying to them about the pains and ills of racism? How long (in the U.S.) have black people sought to have whites believe them about the cold hard facts about how being black in a white supremacist society harms them?
(See Prof Derrick Bell’s – The 5 Rules of Racial Standing)
Are you against ALL white anti-racists (or race activists) who make a living speaking (writing/researching/studying/educating/demonstrating/etc) to primarily white people about how, when, where, why they’re racists?
Do you believe that white university sociology professors should forgo their salaries because they specialize in matters of anti-racism?
Are you a FULL-TIME anti-racist/activist? If yes, how do you support yourself?

@ Jefe-very accurate comparion between the overwhelmingly “white” population of Maine vs. Utah, I’m in agreement with your observations about them as I have resided in New England (previously) as well and no place I have ever seen in the ‘States comes as close to Pleasantville-incarnate as does Utah.
@George-What is it exactly about the Anglos that You would deem them worthy enough to be missed by Anyone?
