Jennifer Smith (1970-2048), if she exists, is the completely average American: half of Americans are richer than her, half are poorer; half are older, half are younger; half live to the north, half to the south, and so on. She drives the most common car, holds the most common opinions and has the most common name.
Everything about her is common and ordinary. But in 2008 she and others like her will determine who becomes the next American president.
First, she is a she, because there are more shes than hes. She is white, English-speaking and Protestant. She is 37 years old, has brown eyes, brown hair and is 162 cm tall (5 foot 4 inches). She will not tell you her weight, but it is in fact 69 kilograms (152 pounds). A bit overweight, but not fat.
She lives with her husband of 12 years, Michael, and their two children: Jessica, age 12, and Michael Junior, age 10. No dogs. They live in their own house in a suburb of St Louis, Missouri, just west of the river that goes down the middle of the country, the Mississippi.
She works in the home, he is a branch manager who drives 25 minutes to get to work. In 2005 their family income was $56,000 (8,000 crowns). Their house is worth $167,500 (24,000 crowns) – three years’ income. They have nothing saved for retirement and have $8000 (1100 crowns) of credit card debt.
They have two cars (her silver 1998 Toyota Camry and his Ford F-150 pickup), three televisions (with cable) and broadband Internet service. She uses Google and Internet Explorer.
Education: She went to public (government-run) school and then went to a nearby university but never got her degree. She has not read a book since then, but she does read newspapers and magazines. She reads Reader’s Digest and Better Homes & Gardens.
Religion is very important to her. She goes to church once a week, but not always. She was brought up Baptist and still is. She is not “born again” nor is she a fundamentalist. She believes in God, the Devil, the Bible, Jesus Christ, angels, heaven and hell.
Man was created by God, not by evolution as Darwin said. Yet evolution is “probably true”. That does not make sense, yet it is a common opinion in America.
She is against same-sex marriage. She wants the government to put more limits on guns and abortion, but not to outlaw them. It should provide universal healthcare and raise the minimum wage.
She is a Reagan Democrat. In the 2004 election she voted for Bush, a Republican, who has turned out to be a worse president than even Nixon! He has made a mess of Iraq, making the world less safe. America should pull all its troops out according to a timetable.
Osama bin Laden will strike America again. He needs to be caught.
She will die in 2048 at age 78 of heart disease, nine years after her husband.

I am beginning to think 78 these days is young (for some people).

I wanted to find out what the average person in America was like, so I pulled together the different averages you read about into one person. Jennifer Smith is a piece of fiction, but there are bound to be living women who are pretty close to her.
