“The Blind Side” (2009) is a Hollywood film starring Sandra Bullock about the true-life story of Leigh Anne Tuohy, a rich white woman who adopts a poor black boy, Michael Oher, who later goes on to play American football for Ole Miss and the Baltimore Ravens. She is “a fine Christian lady” with a gun and a millionaire husband who owns a string of Taco Bells in Memphis, Tennessee.
Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for Best Actress. It was made for $29 million (2 million crowns) but brought in $309 million.
The true story: Michael Oher’s mother was hooked on crack. His father was in and out of prison and later murdered. Oher himself was in foster care from age seven onwards, being shifted from home to home and school to school. Sometimes he even lived on the streets. But on the strength of his football talent he was able to get into a good private school – despite his bad grades and lack of money. He went on to become one of the top high school football players in the state.
And that was before he met the Tuohys.
The Tuohys took him in and gave him a home only after he became a top football player. Some suspect it was to help to get him into Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi, their old school where football is big. After they helped to get his grades up, that is just what came to pass.
As Hollywood tells it, he was a nobody when Leigh Ann Tuohy found him cold and alone, living on the street. She took him in as her “Christian duty”. And it was she who made him into a football star. When they met he barely knew how to play football – as if he had grown up in a dark hole or something.
In the film she does question her motives – but only to conclude that she cannot help being so Nice!
At the end of the film she reads a news story about someone from Oher’s old neighbourhood who was also good at sports: he was shot dead at age 21.
I found it unpleasant to watch: half the time Oher just kind of stands there saying nothing, big, strong and slow-witted – while Tuohy does most of the talking and doing. She seems to regard him as some kind of overgrown 12-year-old. She compares him to a storybook bull.
Stereotypes: Some say the Oher character is a Magical Negro – a black character who comes out of nowhere and uses his amazing powers to save the white lead. He is like that except that it is Tuohy who does the saving, not him.
A far better fit is the White Saviour or Nice White Lady saving Helpless Darkies. Think of Michelle Pfeiffer in “Dangerous Minds” (1995). The fit is so good that the facts have been changed to make Oher appear much more Helpless than he was and Tuohy way Nicer.

Nice White Lady film. Don’t you just love Hollywood. I assume they changed the story so much that they wouldn’t have to pay for the rights and to make a film that whites can feel good about themselves. And anytime you say that to a white person they will talk all over you: see Vannessa Williams on The View.
Hitting you with comments like “Race isn’t a big deal.”
“They don’t see him as black” yada yada yadda
So he was already a star when they took him in? Hmm intresting, I still have not watched the film I watched Freedom Writers so yeeaah…

I remember hearing of this story prior to the release of the film. I chalked it up as a typical story with American race/class issues (something I don’t really get into for obvious reasons). What abagond mentioned about Oher being taken in AFTER making a name for himself on the field is something I didn’t know/didn’t look up…interesting!
I’ll admit to watching this movie, even after hesitation (football fan/belief suspension), though I was more about gawking at Sandra (I know, I know…). The story takes place in Memphis, which is in my home state. You either take it at face-value (real blind side) or cringe and be aware of the demographics…I went with the face-value (cough-Sandra-cough)…>_<

In the book and the film both he is taken in before developing his football talent. Where was he playing football before the Tuohys took him in?

Did Michael Oher really have to learn to play football when he first joined the high school team?
No. This was grossly exaggerated in the movie. Michael did not have to learn how to play football, and Leigh Anne never walked onto the practice field to inspire Michael by telling him to protect his team as if he was protecting their family. The film’s suggestion that he needed to be taught how to play football upset the real Michael Oher, “That part right there, it really got me because it was never like that. I’ve always known how to play the game of football. I’ve always had a passion for the game. You know, it’s Hollywood, so I mean that’s what they do, but at the end of the day it’s still a good story.”
Was he really a timid player who had to be toughened up?
No. “I’ve always had that fire and passion in me on the field,” says Michael. “You can’t put aggression into a person. It’s impossible. Either you have that toughness and aggression or you don’t.” -20/20
Did the Tuohy’s son S.J. really help teach Michael about football?
No. As the real Michael Oher stated above, he already knew how to play football. When Michael Oher was taken in by the Tuohy family, the Tuohy’s son S.J. (Sean Jr.) was 8-years-old at the time (NYTimes.com). Actor Jay Head, who portrays S.J. in the movie, had just turned 11-years-old when filming began, although onscreen he looks to be a few years younger than he is and more in line with the true story. The real S.J. was not nearly as small either. He was by no means the pipsqueak that we see onscreen. Michael and S.J. did play sports together recreationally, but S.J. didn’t have to teach him anything.
It doesn’t say anything about him being a top high school player before the Touhy’s took him in though. If his grades were so bad how would he be eligible at any of the schools he attended prior?

I looked up Michael Oher in the Wikipedia. I know it is not always right, but it tends to be way more right than a Hollywood film. It says in part:
“Oher played football during his freshman year at a public high school in Memphis and applied for admission to Briarcrest Christian School…. The school’s football coach submitted Oher’s school application to the headmaster, who agreed to accept him if Oher could complete a home study program first…
After the 2003 football season at Briarcrest, he was named Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year in 2003 and First Team Tennessee All-State.[3] … Before that season and for his prior twenty months at Briarcrest, Oher had been living with several foster families. In 2004, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, a couple with a daughter and son attending Briarcrest, allowed Oher to live with them and eventually adopted him.”

So the Touhy’s were basically just nice foster parents. It was still cool what they did but the book and the film made it seem like they MADE Michael Oher. You get the impression that he never would have made it to the NFL without the Touhy’s.
The fact that he was already a decorated player actually really bothers me. A lot.

I don’t know what’s wrong with Hollywood. I mean, I do know: they never let truth get in the way of a good story. Or the one that makes much money. I get that. I strongly disagree, but I get it.
Now, what does this approach tells us about the race relations in the US? Why does “the mighty white lady” story seems so appealing to the American audiences? To the point of awarding Sandra Bullock (!!!) with an Academy Award?
When they met he barely knew how to play football – as if he had grown up in Bulgaria or something.
That one hurt, you know. 😛

Sorry, I did not mean to pick on Bulgaria. “Bulgaria or something” meant some place faraway where boys do not grow up playing American football. In any case, I changed it to:

which is probably better since no one in the film acts as if Oher is a foreigner – just Deprived and Missing Half His Brain.

This is why I don’t care for movies very much at all. Anything labeled ‘based on a true story’ or ‘inspired by events from…’ is not going to be as factual as the advertisements claim. ‘Inspired by actual events’ really means “we took the names of people in a real-life event and skewed the facts to make a ‘heart-warming, feel-good’ movie” – yeah, it’s only a ‘feel-good’ movie for whites who believe that only they can save ‘darkies’ from themselves!
Dances With Wolves, Forrest Gump…even ‘Avatar’ spews the ‘mighty whitey’ nonsense!

The first thing I want to point out is the reason this movie did so well was because it was viewed as a “True Story”. Americans love the story of the underdog who against all odds succeeds. The problem with these movies is they don’t tell the truth…
-A lot of these “Underdogs” were very successful before they became famous or received a lot of help. Michael Oher was a highly recruited star lineman at a top high school and not some kid who wondered on the football field and suddenly became a star overnight with the help of his “mom”.
-Taking in “homeless” youth(Often black) athletes happens all the time! Young star athletes from Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett…have been taken in by families to allow them to attend top sports high schools in different cities or states. It’s not uncommon for kids who are very successful athletes at their local public school to receive free accommodations to attend a powerhouse school.
I heard about this movie a couple of times and already knew what had happen.
Oher who’s a star lineman is spotted by private school coach but can’t afford to attend. Coach makes accommodations for housing and tuition so he can play football for the school.
I advise you all to watch the movie Hoop Dreams to get a real idea of how these stories play out. It’s not always a happy ending when these families take these kids in and they don’t reach the success of Oher.

What makes the movie even more lame is if you try to deconstruct it. What if the movie were about a white woman who took in a white kid who wasn’t related to her? Or if it were about a black woman who took in a black kid who wasn’t related to her? At best, they’d be Lifetime movies…MAYBE. She’s heralded not so much for her actions of taking in a child, but because that child was black. And when you flip that around some more, it says that WP normally see BP not as actual people at all, but charity cases or feel-good projects we can really put our hearts into.
Or what if the woman who took him in wasn’t much better off than he was? The only people I know taking kids in and helping them IRL are people who can barely afford to, frankly, not rich or even remotely comfortable. He would have been sharing a room with 2-3 other kids or sleeping on the couch. Not tucked in nice and tight with 500 thread-count linens in a nice, clean room of his own.
Or what if the kid had been as well educated and intelligent as he should be for his age? Or did not exhibit any behavior that would warrant intervention from anyone. Not movie material, right? It’s *only* movie material when whites can Other the hell out of a POC.

An adult with an 85 IQ (the average for Oher’s demographic) is actually about as intelligent as a typical 12 year old.
So the movie’s not that far off. It’s well established he was kind of slow anyway, like many oafy atheletes. I’m not sure what’s so controversial about that.

and why does the movie gloss over the real issues at hand which are the racism that cause michael to fall behind academically and causes his mother to be on crack etc…they dont’ look at the socio-political reasons for these things…they just make it seem like blacks are inherently prone to these things and ALL wp are on the straight and narrow and they’re just there to innocently help the poor, downtrodden little black boys…gimme a break…another propaganda film to make bp look worthless

yeah the reason some wp love these movies is because it makes them feel less guilty about their white privilege and makes it seem like racism has NOTHING to do w/ the plight of the people like Michael Oher who grow up in the system and are not afforded the basic rights they deserve…the problem is just glossed over…they don’t look at the poor state of the schooling system that failed kids like Michael Oher and forced them to rely on their “football talents” to make it in life…they don’t look at the causes the led women like Michael Oher’s mother to become dependent on crack…they don’t look at the fact that its easier to get drugs than drug-treatment in the US…no they don’t look at any of that…their solution is to just give every young black guy a nice white family to free them from their blackness…: ) that’s it…
The whole thing is absurd and degrading actually…but about the movie itself…there were many things i was offended by…
in one scene the mrs.tuohy and her white women friends are at lunch together and one of her friends says to her…”aren’t you concerned…he’s a large black guy living in your house w/ your daughter,” so basically the implication being that he’s going to rape the daughter or something…i was offended that they put that in there.
It was as if they needed to assuage any doubts the audience had by bringing up the ole bm rape ww stereotype…” oh, audience just in case you’re worried…he doesn’t rape ww…it’s okay.” I couldn’t believe they would put that in there…
then in another scene, Mrs. Tuohy states to her husband “you don’t think he’d steal anything right?” So I don’t understand why make a movie that is supposedly about post-racialism and getting past all this stuff and at the same time keep bringing up these destructive and vicious stereotypes…???
It’s as if the writers were trying to destruct these myths and stereotypes but they were only reinforcing them by even having them in the movie in the first place…
then in another scene…the white woman teacher finally has an a epiphany when she realizes that Michael Oher isn’t really stupid…he just can’t read…he’s not properly educated…so she starts delivering the tests orally to him…so that he can recite the information back to her orally w/out needing to read/ write…
she even says in one scene ” HE’S NOT STUPID” like its some big realization…ofcourse he’s not stupid…he’s just uneducated due to the crappy inner-city schooling system…they didn’t know that???
Then when I was watching it w/ my friend in the very beginning i remember saying to my friend “why do they call him BIG Mike,” because to me that’s a pejorative…as a bp I pegged that as degrading the second i heard it and sure enough later in the film, Michael Oher says…” i don’t like being called Big Mike.” Duh…i can’t believe they had to put that line in the movie…
Racist things like that were all throughout that movie and I found it insulting

The whole movie was just racist stereotype after racist stereotype…
one other thing that bothered me…i agree with you abagond, he was a grown-ass man throughout the majority of the movie and he was treated like a little child. He was a grown-man with a mind of his own and we don’t even get to know him as a character…it was like he was just an accessory to the family or something…and I am not talking about the family in reality…i’m strictly speaking about the portrayal in the movie…
the whole thing was just a hot mess…it was almost as bad as Precious…I’m just getting sick of racist people making these movies about bp…
I want an intelligent, historically-accurate movie made about bp. I want a bp who is knowledgable in african-american history and who is a talented writer to produce a movie a postive movie where wp aren’t the saviours and where bp are just living normally for once…
Where are these movies?? where are the inkwells, the Love and Basketballs…where are those movies??

The film did go out of its way to let the audience know that Oher was not going to rob, rape or hurt anyone. Why is that?
The only time Oher is violent is in the service of white people: on the football field for a white private school and later when he beats up some guys from his old neighbourhood who make indecent remarks about his adoptive white sister.

another thing that irritated me about that movie…in the end sandra bullock reads this newspaper clip about the young man from michael oher’s neighborhood who was slated to play pro-football getting shot. that is one of the last things we see in the movie and the message that i got from that was…”wp take care of black guy athletes because you never know if he might grow up to be a star…” why is it that they only focused on the minority of young bm who go on to play pro-sports?? what about the young black boys who are just average…??? they don’t deserve a chance to go to a good school, get an education and go to college??? they don’t deserve a loving home?? why does a bg have to be damn near an amazing athlete to get the things that average joe white guys are automatically afforded??
another thing…i notice that in these save a poor negro films…there is usually always a black MALE being saved by a white female…what is the message there?? it seems cool to take in a young black male, but a black female…you say no, no, no,no,no…

This view could even be applied to the current president.
To everyone else, how is this a bad thing in the grand scheme of things? It’s like a stripper paying for med school. The last laugh is the best laugh. Also, you NEVER hear about a black family adopting a white MALE. Ever. You do not have the right to whine when another group is showing more compassion, even if for the wrong reasons. In fact, racism cannot even be applied to Hollywood’s ‘version’ of these events, as racism/ist holds a negative connotation. It would be a new word entirely.
You want to see racism? Have a black family adopt a white male… a redhead with freckles perhaps? I love how certain viewpoints on this blog are treated as fact without statistical data or consideration for the ‘other’ side of the equation. Logic should win, not ‘feelings’.

Shame the creators of “The Blind Side” and other movies like it can’t see any humanity in black people unless if we are entertaining them. They sure care about personality, that is, when it applies to white characters. Black characters are just blank slates or stupid criminal idiots if you go by this movie and others like it. They exist to promote the belief of white supremacy. Of course, black people don’t care about their own if you go by the BS Hollywood often puts out.

Now if we were talking about rap music then the target is 18-25 year old black males. That’s why all the rappers are black but you don’t hear us crying about it do you? Oh man those black people portray white people that can’t rap unless a black dude is helping him out. That is laughable just as your grievance with Hollywood. If only 20% of the world’s population is black then that means blacks are a minority. It’s not racist just a numerical fact. I’m speaking hypothetically since I don’t know the actual percentage but you get what I’m saying.

According to Michael Lewis who wrote The Blind Side Book, the Tuohys had no idea that Michael Oher was a fantastically gifted athlete when they met him. They had nothing to do with him enrolling in Briarcrest. Leigh Anne began responding to his needs. He needed clothes, food, and a place to stay. She responded to the level of need. I suppose all the people who have issues with this story, would rather see him remain on the streets, uneducated, unappreciated, and without much chance in life.
It’s a wonderful story I believe that the Tuohys loved Michael and he loved them.

Some people seem to think that everyone who has been homeless at one time or another is a drunk/alcoholic, has HIV, a prostitute, a stripper or pole dancer to make ends meet, a thief, a criminal, a beggar……Which just confirms to me that many people are dumb as a box of rock and can’t think outside the box and have one track thinking.
But anyway, stereotypes….
Besides, I guess if you have never been homeless at all, people wouldn’t have any idea about it, as with most things.
Also, when people write or say stuff, they may not necessarily be talking about the present tense, they may be writing into the past and that could be several years previous, not the present day necessarily, but once again…..Assumption.
