Romona Moore (c. 1982-2003) was a student at Hunter College who lived on Remsen Avenue in Canarsie in Brooklyn, New York. One night she left to go to Burger King and never came back.
On her way there, a few blocks from her house, a man pulled her off the street and took her down to his basement where he and his friend beat her up and raped her. Repeatedly. They took off her clothes and put her in chains. They sodomized her and tried to saw off her hands and feet. They beat her face with a hammer, they cut the webbing between her fingers. This went on for four days.
They checked the news: no word of her missing. They were upset.
They kept her under a big piece of plastic. One day when a friend dropped by they said, “Say hi, bitch,” and pulled back the plastic to show her. Their friend talked to her. Afterwards he went to a baby shower and then drove back home to Maryland. He never told the police.
She became too “feisty” so they beat her to death and put her in a crate. They found another woman and started on her.
When she did not return from Burger King her mother worried. The next morning she called the police. They said, “She’s 21. We’re not supposed to take the report.” But they did anyway and told her to call that night.
She did, but they said, “”Lady, why are you calling here? Your daughter is 21. These officers should not have taken the report in the first place.” They closed the case the next morning.
Just two months before Svetlana Aronov, age 44, a rich white woman on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the wife of a doctor, took her dog for a walk and never came back. The next day the police called a press conference and put 24 detectives on it full-time. They went door to door and passed out flyers. They looked through her telephone and bank records, they looked at surveillance tapes of nearby buildings. And so on. They even hired a psychic and a bloodhound. They later found Aronov’s body in the East River.
Moore’s mother, getting no help from the police, called the press. They were not interested either. She made flyers and passed them out. The police would not help her till the fourth day, the day her daughter died: she had called a politician to get on their case.
The detective assigned to the case sometimes would not return calls for days. After spending less time on it than the police had spent looking for that rich white woman’s dog, he gave up.
The next day, the day before Mother’s Day, her body was found – not by the police – under an old ice cream truck just a few blocks from her house.
Her mother is suing the New York police for racism. They say it is a hard thing to prove in court.

Right. I thought this is what the NAACP was for, to fight cases like this. The racism of the NYPD is bad and it is serious: it has cost black people their lives.

This is a sickening travesty of justice. These racist morons on the NYPD ought to be fired without pay. Even better, be put in jail for not give a d**n for this beautiful Romona Moore.
This is not an isolated incident. This is a pattern all across the country whenever involves a missing Black victim. The police, media, and larger society dismiss the sufferings and victimization of Blacks as “no big deal.” This mentality is pervasive in America because people still hold on the mentality that Black lives are worthless. That’s a harsh thing to write, that’s the reality.

By the way, the detective in this case, far from getting fired, got a promotion: he found out who the killers were.
The mother was more upset at the police, who could have saved her daughter’s life, than the killers, who she writes off as sickos.

Wonder what finally made him do his job.
And what does the person’s age have to do with them being declared missing? In that case, the police shouldn’t have been searching for Ms./Mrs. Aronov either.

That’s a disgrace! How come Al Sharpton, who is often the loudest voice for social justice in NYC, supporting Miss Romona’s mother in her quest to seek justice from the racist/fascist/classist NYPD. Why aren’t Black leaders in NYC or in America for that matter pursing this matter. This is heavy duty neglect on the part of the detective.
If he knew the killers, then he ought to be in jail by now not out on the street patrolling NYC’s streets.
Also, one lady’s comment is right on the money, if age factors who is missing, then how come the wealthy white Manhattanite wife gets top priority as soon as she went missing in minutes, not hours and days as in the case of Miss Romona Moore.
May Miss Romona Moore be remembered always.

No, the perpetrators were black as was the witness, Ramondo Jack, who failed to report the crime of kidnapping which eventually ended in murder:

Actually incarceration rates for Non-Hispanic whites for child molestation are somewhat below their respective percentage of the population.

The article I read did not give the race of her killers nor did it show their picture, but they lived in a black part of New York and had names that seemed more Black than White: Troy Hendrix and Kayson Pearson.

If you follow the links I posted, you’ll see the photographs of the two convicts and the witness. I would not have made the statement that the killers were black without some proof. Granted the link for Troy Hendrix is a matter of deduction but how many Troy Hendrix’s were arrested in NY in 2003 for Murder, Kidnapping, and Rape with their convictions in 2006 which exactly parallels Ms. Moore’s case?

I LIVE IN CANARSIE AND I REMEMBER THIS STORY WELL.
I LIVE NEAR THE 69TH PRECINCT, AND LET ME TELL YOU
THEY ARE REALLY NOT A HELPFUL BUNCH OF “PEOPLE”.
IT’S SO SAD THAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR WOMEN RIGHT IN MY OWN NEIGHBORHOOD.
NOT ONLY DID THEY RAPE AND KILL HER,
THEY HAD THE NERVE TO TRY TO BREAK OUT OF THE COURT ROOM DURING SENTENCING.
THEY EVEN STABBED A LAWYER DURING SAID INCIDENT.
R.I.P. RAMONA
EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT KNOW HER, THIS IS STILL A SAD SAD STORY, THAT COULD HAVE HAD A MUCH DIFFERENT OUTCOME, HAD THE POLICE DID SOMETHING SOONER.
SO WHAT SHE WAS 21
SHE WAS MISSING
AND A COLLEGE STUDENT.
NOT A STREET GIRL WHO COULD HAVE BEEN STAYING OUT OR WITH FRIENDS.
THE 69TH PRECINCT
SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF WHAT THEY DID.
I HATE THEM AND HAVE NEVER HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH THEM.
THEY HARASS MY SON FOR WALKING DOWN THE STREET MINDING HIS BUSINESS,
BUT COULDN’T GO OUT AND INVESTIGATE A REAL POLICE REPORT THAT WAS FILED.
FLAVOR FLAV
SAID IT RIGHT
911 IS A JOKE.

i hate to say it but it seems like black women are not only ignore by the police and media, but even blacks (specifically black men) don’t care for what happens to black women.
the NAACP is run mostly by black men, and yet you hear them come to the defense of a man faster than the speed of light…but not so much for women.
its bad how there is a major rift between men and women…whites can afford to have this separation, but blacks cannot.
black men did not get half the rights they got without the aid of black women.

May your life as well as the lessons taught by your tragic death never be forgotten. I continue to pray for justice for you…this case is bigger than the vile murderers that stole your life. It’s a speaks volumes about the issues of race, class, and lack of regard for suffering (both yours and your families’) that the NYPD displays especially, where people of color are involved.
I remember this story because it hit close to home. I thought of Romona’s murder today, all of a sudden, and decided to do some research on the results of this case. I remember Romona, the person, not just the victim of this tragedy. We attended the same high school, she was a year ahead of me but since our school was small we crossed paths often. That picture of her, I believe, is from her senior prom. Our families are from the same small country. She was such a good person and I still can’t believe this happened to her.
Romona’s family broke this case, they knew something bad must have happened, they sought out help from the people whose job it is to “protect and serve”, they put up their own flyers and ultimately, they received the anonymous call about where her body was, not the NYPD. The 67th precinct handled this horribly. She was murdered after being tortured for days just blocks away from home. If her family didn’t mobilize her murder may still be unsolved. This never should have happened.
I’m disheartened…but that isn’t enough. I’m angry, frustrated and enlightened, we can’t afford to continue to be bystanders saying, “how sad” when things like this happen. We have to mobilize and be agents of social change. Let’s use Mrs. Carmichael as an example, she could have given up after finding and burying her child. Instead she’s in court fighting for Romona’s legacy, so that her death wouldn’t be in vain but also, to protect the next person of color that goes missing. I pray for her continued strength.
What positive change are you trying to make/ affect?

Very sad but very typical.
When a young black woman goes missing out of the blue the idea is she is same irresponsible Jezebel running off with her “boyfriend”/ f*ck buddy for a few days to party and have sex.
When white women go missing it is portrayed as some chastised jewel who was brutally snatched away from the family she loves and adores.
These self-serving archetypes help police officers justify there blatant racism and disregard for non-white life.
