My favourite Whitney Houston songs … because I can. I know these links will rot and in a year or so, that the videos will have been moved, removed or become otherwise unwatchable. But that does not matter for now – and that is all that matters for now. These are not in any particular order, though the first is the one I like best:
“I Love the Lord” (1997) – this never charted, but it is my number one favourite Whitney song of all time.
“Run To You” (1993) – now that she is dead this becomes an extremely sad song, but for that reason all the more powerful. A woman so beautiful who sang such beautiful love songs and yet had such an unhappy marriage. This went to #31 on the American R&B charts, #15 in Britain.
Queen of the Night (1993) – this version sounds like some cast-off En Vogue song. I liked the way it was in the film “The Bodyguard” (1992). Or I think I do: sometimes my memory remixes songs and makes them sound way better than they were. This went to #15 in Britain but did not chart in America.
“My Love is Your Love” (1999) – when I heard this song, I thought she was going to make a comeback. Instead it was her last top ten hit. This went to #2 on the American R&B charts and in Britain.
“How Will I Know?” (1985) – Although my sister had told me about her six months before, this was the song that firmly planted Whitney Houston in my brain. I know I first saw this on a black-and-white television because I remember being surprised at how colourful it was later on. I bought her first album on the strength of this song. This went to #1 on the American R&B charts, #5 in Britain.
“Hold Me” (1984) – a duet with Teddy Pendergrass. This was her first song ever to make the R&B charts, but because they did not play it to death like many of her other songs, it reminds me of her first album, where almost every song was good. I still think it was her best album ever. This went to #5 on the American R&B charts, #44 in Britain.
I’ve listened to “My love Is Your Love” on YouTube several times since her death. It’s one of my favorites. This verse is especially poignant:
If I should die this very day
Don’t cry ‘cuz on earth we wasn’t meant to stay
And no matter what the people say
I’ll be waiting for you after the judgment day

‘How will I know, reminds me of happy times in my youth.
Loved her version of ‘I’m every woman’ too. I didn’t realise until recently that she sung backing vocals on the original version by Chaka Khan…

Please keep Ms. Houston’s family, especially her daughter, in prayer. I can’t imagine being so young and losing one’s mother.

Whitney Houston could sing the phone book and I would still be captivated. How choose amongst perfection?

Aretha Franklin has been an essential part of my life since I was a very small child and Whitney is and will remain a part of mine a well.. She shares with me a kindred spirit that words can never explain, I still feel so heart broken, why, I just want to know why we have our paths in life that only we can travel. I see the pain all around me and just ask why? The miracles of love and yet never enough! We have got to love one another for that our only hope for a better tomorrow. I miss you my friend, may God keep you close>
