Here are the words, phrases and meanings I use that do not appear in the Oxford dictionary (online here), the official dictionary of this blog.
Words in boldface have entries of their own. Those with links have posts of their own.
Abagond – me, my pen name.
Afro-Latino – a Latin American who looks at least part African.
America – means the United States of America (US) unless I make it clear I mean North and South America as a whole.
American – means those from the US unless another sort of American is made clear:
- geographically: Americas = North American + Central American + South American + Caribbean.
- culturally: Americas = Latin American + Anglo American + West Indian + ??
- racially: US = Black, White, Latino, Asian and Native Americans.
See: White, Black, Latino, Anglo American, West Indies, Indian, five-race model.
Anglo – anyone whose main language is English. It can also be short for:
Anglo American – any White person in North America whose home language is English.
Anything But Racism argument – is where a White person is presented with a clear case of racism and tries to think of some Logical Explanation for it that has nothing to do with racism. As if racism is that rare or something.
Arab Trader argument – if Whites do something evil and terrible it is all right – or at least not all that bad – so long as they can find at least one example from world history of someone else doing the same thing. Thus the Transatlantic slave trade was not so bad because Arabs traders sold slaves too! Utterly morally broken, but Whites say it with a straight face.
Asian Atrocity argument – if Asians like Mao or Genghis Khan killed 35 million people, what is so wrong with Whites doing it? Lighten up!
asymmetry of racism – the idea that White racism in America is way worse than Black racism because it is supported by the institutions of society, like the police, the courts, the press, the schools, etc. It is why “reverse racism” and “Blacks are racist too” are weak arguments. Some express this thought by saying racism = prejudice + power.
Basically Good – what Whites in the US think they are despite their ugly past and Christian ideas of original sin.
Black – anyone who looks at least part African, especially those in the US. See the One Drop Rule. Much of what I say about “Blacks” generally applies to people of colour (non-Whites) throughout the English-speaking world. Unlike the Oxford dictionary, I generally do not think of Australian Aboriginals or Melanesians as Black.
Black Brute stereotype – Black men as savage, violent, amazingly strong and not caring about right and wrong.
Black Knight – the commenter xPraetorius, so called because, like the Black Knight in Monty Python, he does not know when he is defeated. Banned in 2013.
Black-on-Black crime argument – Blacks in America have no right to complain about White-on-Black crime till they do something about Black-on-Black crime.
Black pathology – blaming the victim of racism.
BWE – Black Women’s Empowerment movement. The secret to happiness is to marry a White man, or at least avoiding Black men who are DBR – damaged beyond repair.
Blasian – part Black, part Asian.
Bootstrap Myth – the idea that anyone can rise to the top (or at least out of poverty) through clean living and hard work. Because racism is dead!
Britain – I mostly use it to mean the United Kingdom (UK), a nation, not the island of that name, unless I am talking about ancient times. The main difference between the island and the nation is that Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
Broken Africa stereotype – the stereotype of Africa as a hellhole of AIDS, refugee camps, blood diamonds, etc.
ching chong – Mock Chinese to used to mock East Asians. It amounts to a racist slur.
colour-blind racist – someone who says he does not see colour – until you want to marry his daughter. It is the most common sort of racism among Whites born in the US after 1970. Whites say they do not see colour, but there are plenty of cold, hard numbers about housing, marriage, schooling, unemployment, income, life expectancy, etc, that say otherwise. Colour-blind racists do not so much hate Blacks as look down on them. See Jim Crow racist.
colourism – the belief that lighter-skinned people of the same race are better than darker-skinned people.
Comment Policy – yes, I have one. If you stay on topic, keep from making personal remarks and do not use bad language, you will be fine.
Creole – on this blog it mainly means those whose roots go back to French New Orleans, particularly to its free people of colour of the early 1800s.
Da Jokah – a troll who seems to be the reincarnation of duckduckgoofs and Churchs. He takes several months to regenerate after being banned
darkies – people of colour as seen from the point of view of White privilege and power. There are three main kinds: Happy, Helpless and Ungrateful.
dorf – how NPR and many well-to-do Whites like their Black music: dead, old, retro or foreign.
five-race model – divides the US into five “races”: Black, White (or Caucasian), Latino (or Hispanic), Asian and Native (or Indian). Pacific Islanders count as “Asian”, Alaskan Natives as “Native”. I count West Asians as Asian but government reports count them as White. Latinos count as a “race”, even though they come in all colours: White Hispanics, Afro-Latinos, etc.
five walls of racism – the five walls Whites in the US have to break through to completely free themselves from racism.
FTW – for the win
Get over it -what White people say when faced with an undeniable case of racism, like slavery.
Go back to Africa – America is not all that bad because if it were, you would go back to Africa.
God – when capitalized it means the god of the Jews, Christians, Muslims and Western philosophers, the presumed Creator of the Universe.
HBD – short for human biodiversity, a form of pseudo-scientific racism, pushed by Steve Sailer and others.
Hispanic – same as Latino.
IIRC – If I remember correctly.
Indian – means those native to the Americas from before the time of Columbus. It only means the kind from India if that is made clear.
internalized racism – being racist against your own race and therefore against yourself.
IRL – in real life.
It was the times! – a simple phrase that excuses the evil deeds of past ages because, apparently, they had a very different sense of right and wrong.
ITA – I totally agree.
Jezebel stereotype – Black women seen as being oversexed and loose.
Jim Crow racism – the old sort of racism common among Whites born in the US before 1970, back in Jim Crow days. They do not just look down on Blacks, they hate them, they want as little to do with them as possible. Being in the same swimming pool or kissing one – ew! If you hang out with Blacks there is something is wrong with you. The races are happiest when they are kept apart. Tra-la-la-la-la.
just world doctrine – the belief, common in Apple-pie America, that society is just, that whatever injustice there is is an accident, not something built into society. It is assumed rather than proved. Thus the Anything But Racism argument.
kumbaya anti-racism – the idea that racism will go away like magic if we say the right words and try to act in a colour-blind way.
Latino – a person in the US with Latin American roots. Same thing as “Hispanic”. Come in different colours (Afro-Latinos, White Hispanics, etc), but regarded as a “race” in the five-race model.
liberal – short for liberal Democrat, someone who shares the politics of US Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Carter. Shifted from centre-left to centre-right after Reagan in the 1980s – thus Presidents Clinton and Obama.
Macon D – is the White anti-racist blogger who runs Stuff White People Do, which looks at the many ways White people do racist stuff and not see that it is racist.
metro – metropolitan, meaning a city along with its suburbs.
microaggression – small everyday acts and subtle indignities through which the privileged, often without knowing it, make the marginalized feel marginalized. Example: a White woman clutching her purse when a Black man enters an elevator.
Mock Ebonics – is Black American English produced by non-native speakers – from Internet trolls to Hollywood screenwriters to the old blackface performers of the minstrel shows. In most cases it is verbal blackface.
Model Minority stereotype – Asians as hard-working, intelligent, educated, law-abiding, etc.
moderated words – words that will send your comment to moderation instead of getting posted instantly. They are listed in the comment policy. In general they are either obscene (fuck, shit, dick) or racial slurs (whitey, chink, nigger). Note that piss and idiot are moderated, but hell, damn and ass are not.
moral blindess – where one is blind to the wrong one does or is done in one’s name. Brainwashing, like the White lens, and broken moral reasoning, like the Arab Trader argument, layered on top of one’s own natural pride and rational self-interest, makes it dangerously easy.
NAMs – Non-Asian minorities, particularly Black, Latino and Native Americans. Used by Steve Sailer and other HBDers.
New York – in this blog it almost always means the city not the state. It goes like this;
- New York state = New York + upstate New York + Long Island
Nollywood – the Nigerian film industry.
No Slappz – was a commenter from Brooklyn who believes only the facts he wants to believe. Therefore arguing with him is a waste of time. When you give up he thinks it is because he has won. He has great spelling and vocabulary skills but terrible reading skills, being an extreme example of Reading While White.
North America – unless I am talking about continents, it means just the US and Canada. See American for more.
Not All Whites – the idea that you cannot make general statements about Whites because they are not all the same. They are so different from one another! They are individuals! Unlike Blacks or Asians, who are seen through stereotypes. When a Black man rapes a woman it is because he is Black, Blacks cannot control their desires. But when a White man molests a little boy, it is because he is sick, he needs help. See the difference?
N-word – is the word “nigger”. In the mouth of a White person it is always a racist slur.
NYPD – New York City Police Department.
One Drop Rule – if you look at all Black African, even just one bit, then you are considered to be Black in Anglo American society. Because, you know, Whites are pure.
OP – original post.
people of colour – an ungainly term for anyone who is not White. What Nezua the Unapologetic Mexican calls “brown”, what the British used to call “coloured” and what, on this blog, generally goes under the name of Black
Perpetual Foreigner stereotype – sees someone as a foreigner because of their race.
Pioneer Fund – pours millions into studies that support scientific racism.
POC – see people of colour.
purple people – people with purple skin. I have never seen one, but White people keep bringing them up, as in: “I don’t care if you’re black, white, green or purple, it’s the person that counts.”
queer = LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender).
race conscious – where your race becomes a part of how you see yourself and others. Whites in America think it is wrong, while for people of colour it is unavoidable except for the profoundly delusional. Whites see it as “being obsessed about race” or just plain “being racist”.
race realism – the belief that the races are a fact of nature as opposed to social constructs. Most race realists believe that the races have important inborn differences of intelligence and behaviour that the politically correct are too brainwashed to see or admit to. HBD is pseudoscientific wing of race realism.
racism – the belief that one race is better than another by nature and not, say, because of the current power balance or an accident of history.
Racist Uncle – someone so racist even White people see it. Used by Whites to assure themselves that they are not racist.
Reading While White – despite their higher reading scores, Whites in America can still completely miss the point of a post, especially if it is about racism.
Rented Negro – a Black person who is paid for kissing up to White opinion. An Uncle Tom with stock options. Examples: Clarence Thomas, Juan Williams, Amy Holmes, John McWhorter. And, arguably, Will Smith and Condoleezza Rice.
respectability politics – the secret to Black uplift is to be more like White people.
Sapphire stereotype – Black women stereotyped as angry, headstrong, disagreeable women. It is the main stereotype that Whites born since 1970 have about Black women..
Scripture – when capitalized it means the Christian Bible.
Secret Course on Whiteness – that course I did not get invited to where White people learned how to think and act the way so many of them do.
Shopping While Black – the “crime” of shopping while being a Black person. Like being followed by shopkeepers because they think you are going to take something.
single story – where we keep hearing the same story over and over again about people and places we do not know first-hand. So Africa becomes a place full of wild animals and hungry, unwashed children, not a place where there are libraries, bus drivers and true love.
SMH – smack my head.
sock puppet – a commenter going by a different name so that it seems like others agree with him. Not allowed on this blog.
South, the – when capitalized, it means the south-eastern US, infamous for slavery and Jim Crow (apartheid).
spammer – a commenter who pushes his (its) own content without the courtesy of at least reading and understanding mine.
straw man argument – where someone tries to destroy your argument by bringing up a different argument that sounds kind of like yours and then destroys that.
Stormfront – the main Klan website.
SWPD – Stuff White People Do, an anti-racist blog run by Macon D.
Teflon Theory of History – the idea that anything that took place more than 30 years ago is Ancient History. It has Absolutely No Effect on the present. Or not much. Unless it was something good like the light bulb or the Declaration of Independence. Therefore those who make a big deal of the bad stuff in the past, like slavery, are Living in the Past and need to Get Over It.
Thad – commenter and professor of anthropology. Banned for bullying other commenters.
TMI – too much information. We did not want to know that.
tone argument – where you object to someone else’s argument based on its tone: it is too angry, too hateful, not calm enough, not nice enough, etc. It is a logical fallacy because none of those things has anything to do with whether the truth was spoken.
Tragic Mulatto – a person who is half White and half Black who is torn between the two races. They often try to be White which leads to tragedy. “Imitation of Life” (1933) is a famous book about that which was made into a Hollywood film twice (1934, 1959).
Vast Taking Machine – US and British media that endlessly produces self-serving White opinion, making it hard to hear voices of colour – except as single stories.
West Indies – means the former British West Indies, the Black, English-speaking of the Caribeean: Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, Antigua, etc.
West, the – when capitalized it means Western civilization. The Oxford dictionary, National Geographic and Samuel Huntington see it as Europe and North America. I see it as the civilization that grew out of the western Roman Empire. Any country where the main religion is Catholic or Protestant Christianity I would regard as Western. That would take in Latin America and much of Africa and the Pacific.
White – anyone who is pure European by blood or looks it, especially those in the US and the English-speaking world.
White club – the White race seen as a club. Like a club, it has members, it has rules about who can join and who cannot, it has duties and privileges. Those who fail to carry out their duties can be kicked out.
White Default – is that thing where White Americans see themselves as the default, as normal, neutral, objective, as blah, as blank, as nothing special.
White feelings – more important than the truth, apparently. Example: White women’s tears.
White flight – when Whites move out of a neighbourhood because people of colour are moving in.
White gaze – looking at the world through a White person’s eyes.
White Inventor argument – White people are better than everyone else because of all the cool stuff they invented.
White is right – the idea that mainstream White American culture is always right.
White lens – the screwed up way Whites have of looking at the world, the brainwashing that says “White is right” and “Black is bad”.
White paternalism – Whites know best!
White privilege – the unfair advantages Whites get in US society because of their skin colour. Like better housing and schooling, better care from doctors, higher income for a given level of education and experience, etc.
White proverb – a (cluelessly racist) saying common among Whites.
White Saviour – is a White character in a story who saves people of colour. Like Lawrence of Arabia or Michelle Pfeiffer in “Dangerous Minds” (1995).
Whitewashed – brainwashed by Whites, particularly by White racism.
WHR – waist to hip ratio. WHR = waist / hip.
wigger – is a “White nigger”, a White person who tries to be Black by dressing, acting and talking in a stereotypically Black way.
Wigger Fallacy – the mistaken idea that what makes you Black is how you dress and talk and act, that it is just a matter of culture.
wilfully obtuse – when otherwise intelligent people suddenly cannot understand your argument – or even simple English. Also known as wilful ignorance or protective stupidity. Orwell called it crimestop because it stopped thoughtcrime.
YMMV – your mileage may vary.
YT – whitey.

“No Slappz – is a commenter from Brooklyn who believes only the facts he wants to believe.”
Facts are facts. Thus, we have no choice about believing them. It is possible to pretend the Earth is flat. But that belief will change nothing.
You, however, often confuse opinions and perspectives with facts. And you often sweat over insignificant aspects of major problems. In your world, it appears more important that you push the specious notion that major branches of mathematics were created by blacks rather than wonder why blacks have learned so little about mathematics over the last 2,000 years.

One of the most popular Errors of Logic is known as Proof By Assertion. Not surprisingly, that flaw is repeated here day and night.
Another popular is mistake is the Fallacy of Composition. It is also here in abundance.
You wrote:

One of the most frequent mistakes found here is the mistake made by people who lack an understanding of the written word.
There is a belief among too many posters here that their thinking and writing is clear and unambiguous. Unfortunately, not true. More remarkable is the fact that a site devoted to exposing and combatting racism attacts so many blacks who claim they oppose racism but advocate the most racist of all solutions to the problem.
All the mumbo-jumbo makes it clear that 99% of the problems are in the heads of the complainers.

Very true, but sadly you do not practise this. That is why I stopped answering your comments. It is like talking to a madman.

Okay. Here’s another example of your deeply flawed logic.
If you believe what you have said about the form of the Arab Trader Argument, then to maintain logical consistentcy, you should have a similar response to an example of white achievement.
In your world, if white Americans do something brilliant and innovative, it is not so remarkable as long as there is at least one example from world history of someone else doing the same thing.
Where is the black Einstein? Where is the black Isaac Newton? Where is the black Thomas Edison?
However, when it comes to sports and entertainment, there are legitimate, in fact, many exceptional examples.

Abagond,
Can you add “prison-industrial complex” to this glossary. I think it needs a definition since it a system devised by whites to try and keep the Black man down.
I would do away with that system completely if i were president of the USA.
