The US Capitol riot (January 6th 2021), also known as “the events of January 6th”, or “Wednesday”, was when a Trump rally in Washington, DC turned into an attack on the US Capitol building. They stormed the Capitol just when Congress was counting the Electoral College vote to declare the winner of the 2020 election. Some rioters were chanting “HANG MIKE PENCE!” – the vice president, who was in charge of the counting. A noose was even set up. Bombs were found. Pence lived, but at least five died.
After order was restored, Congress continued the count, declaring Joe Biden the next president. He is due to be sworn in on January 20th – barring further misadventures.
Public support: An early YouGov opinion poll showed that 93% of Democrats saw it as a threat to democracy, while 45% of Republicans were for it!
At the rally, President Trump claimed the election was stolen and said to his 50,000 or so supporters:
“We’re going walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators, and congressmen and women. We’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”
He listed the many ways the election was stolen from him. Even though none of these claims have held up in court, they have become standard fare in the Republican media bubble for the past two months. As of December 11th, 39% of Republicans thought Trump “probably” or “definitely” won the election, while 23% were not sure.
President Trump did not say to storm the Capitol, so strictly speaking he did not incite a riot or insurrection or terrorist attack or stage a coup. But then again, Trump did nothing to stop it either. He later claimed that he “immediately” called in the National Guard. Wrong. Vice President Mike Pence did that and not till several hours later. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s pleas for the National Guard – the day before! – fell on the deaf ears of Trump’s Secretary of Defence. DC is not a state, so it depends for its defence on – the president.
Very special people: Trump later told the rioters to go home, that he “loved” them and that they were “very special”.
The police: Some police officers bravely defended the Capitol and Congress. One gave his life, Officer Brian D. Sicknick. But others helped the insurrectionists: removing barricades, giving directions, posing for pictures, etc. They did not seem to “fear for their lives” at all – while members of Congress hid or fled. Hundreds if not thousands of Trump supporters had stormed the Capitol. Only 13 were arrested during the riot.
AOC: Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who did fear for her life, said:
“We came close to half of the House [of Representatives] nearly dying on Wednesday… It is an act of insurrection, it’s an act of hostility, and we must have accountability because without it, it will happen again.”
Like maybe on the 17th.

The damage to the country has been done. We will have a permanent 18-25% of the country believing that they are living in a socialist dictatorship where the government does not represent the majority of the citizens. They believe “everyone” knows that Trump won. They routinely cite the more than 80 Million votes he received even though that doesn’t match the official count. They will put official in air quotes. They will fester and grow and continue to defend their country and fight for their freedoms for years to come.
Unless and until everyone in a Republican position of power and influence, politicians and pundits alike, unite in delivering the message that meaningful fraud was a lie. We need to see Ted Cruz, Rudy Giuliani and Tucker Carlson all clearly stating that Trump made a mountain out of a molehill because he knew people would fall for it and he didn’t want to give up power… ever.
True patriots would suck it up and deliver that message. A unified message like that would leave behind the right-wing fringe we had before and help re-calibrate all the seemingly “regular folk” that have been swept up in his web of lies. Unfortunately, these greedy, self-serving “swamp” types that aligned themselves with Trump will never step up and I fear more blood will be shed in the name of their false prophet, Trump.
On the bright side, I’ve always maintained that Trump will fall hard when the dust settles and it looks like better than half the Republicans accept he lost and don’t support his tantrum over leaving office. Those are the folks that’ll turn on him and with 75% of the country against him, corporate support (read money) is now leaving him and his sycophants. So, there’s 1 point for the “deep state” lol!

“Ironically, the backlash of medicine they received was done so by the very group of people the US government, tend to socially, politically and financially coddle the most!”
Another local writer came to a similar conclusion, with a special focus on the police. Sarah Stuteville, writing in a local Southend (where most of Seattle’s non-Euro population resides) website, tied the happenings at the Capitol Bldg. to local police data. And what a deep dive she took!
Stuteville described in detail how most of the SPD (Seattle Police Dept.) resides outside of the city limits. In some cases, they commute more than an hour and a half one way to get to their jobs in the city. She described the financial drain of this force on the city of at least $150 million annually. She also described the deep cultural, ethnic and political divide this outside force represents.
While her article ties the attempted coup to local actors, Stuteville also clearly defines the purpose of the police in the USA. Stuteville notes:
https://southseattleemerald.com/2021/01/12/spd-data-shows-what-d-c-capitol-attack-proved-in-primetime-cops-dont-represent-us-or-democracy/#more-57085
Because the people who felt entitled to overrun the Capitol Bldg were part of the group that, as you wrote, “…the US government, tend to socially, politically and financially coddle the most”, I don’t expect them to face any serious consequences for their actions. I also don’t expect the police, National Guard or military to be much of a deterrent to them acting out in the future. I tend to think of those groups as infested with people just like the Trump mob of January 6th.
As such, I am painfully aware that if a mob of Black folk had overrun the Capitol on the 6th, hundreds of Black people at the scene would be dead. Moreover, the police and other paid violence workers (along with large numbers of unpaid vigilantes) would descend on Black neighborhoods nationwide to kill many more– with no legal consequences.
The average Trump supporter lives in a household with an annual income of $72k. That is nearly twice the income of over 50% Americans. Many supporters are even more affluent. It is ironic to me that those so blessed are the main ones running around armed and proclaiming themselves victims of the system.

It’s funny how the playbook is almost exactly the same:
1) Claim that a legitimately won election was “rigged” and not “free and fair”.
2) Encourage insurrection among the losing minority favored by the US
3) Demonize the elected government if it fights the rebellion and/or impose sanctions to increase the populace’s suffering and encourage further instability.
4) Recognize the rebel government when the elected government collapses
Since the MAGAs lacked institutional support, the process in America aborted at stage 2 but in a country like Bolivia it continued to the end.

No big mystery why people in such income brackets feel threatened. Poor people are too beaten down to dream of insurrection. They aren’t interested in getting a bit more, they want a restoration of the status quo that existed after WWII up to 1973 when the Dollar was king.
MAGA is the US “Lebensraum”. The whole world will have to be put on rations for the USA to thrive. The difference between Trump, the Dems, and all kinds of ‘progressives’ is how to go about it and who should be included as beneficiaries of such plunder.
China, Russia and the EU aren’t keen on this idea, so they are making their moves to protect their freedom of action. EU and China sign a trade pact, the EU and Russia move forward with Nord Stream 2, to the displeasure of the US, whether led by Trump or Biden . Where is this leading us? Where did the German “Lebensraum” lead to?

well I have grown increasingly critical to the point of disgust with black lives matter,
i think a good idea for a slogan would be “disarm the police”
as all the talk of reform retraining and descalation is obviously completely unnecessary when you see how police regularly and consistently bring in the most viousious mass shooter alive and unharmed but a unarmed black adult or child will be killed immediately again and again.
and its its evidence of hostility and indifference those that repeatedly conflagrate
defunding the police with abolishing the police and then oh so obviously observing the (not necessarily) rise in violent crime and anarchy.

“… they want a restoration of the status quo that existed after WWII up to 1973 when the Dollar was king.”
The MAGA crowd are really in LaLa Land if that is their primary motivation. Not going to happen no matter how many buildings they storm, how many weapons they brandish or how outlandish their conspiracy theories.
That status quo was established because at the end of WW2, the USA was the only industrialized country standing. Europe was in tatters, groaning with self-inflicted wounds. Japan’s industrial capacity was in smoldering ruins—literally. Russia had some industrial capacity, but they were also hampered by grievous losses from the Nazi invasion. Not to mention a homicidal, psychopathic leader in Stalin.
You fleshed out your argument with, ”The whole world will have to be put on rations for the USA to thrive.” I agree that the American Way Of Life as it existed from 1945 to 1980 was not sustainable. However, I think there is a simpler, homegrown motivation for the MAGA cult in those income brackets: White Supremacy.
White supremacy and the power, privileges and perks that flow from it is the driving force for the MAGA cult. A HuffPo writer and people she interviewed for an article observed:
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-core-support-never-about-economy_n_6000b785c5b62c0057bb6dfc
A deep reading into triggers for White mob violence in the USA from Post Reconstruction (1877) to the 1960s reveals a pattern of economic anxiety leading to lynchings, pogroms (like the Red Summer of 1919) and bombings like in 1950s Birmingham, Alabama.
One incident that illustrated this connection between economics and violence was the 1892 lynching of three co-owners/workers of the People’s Grocery in Memphis, TN. According to Martha Park of MLK50.com,
https://mlk50.com/2018/08/06/the-economics-of-lynching-in-memphis/
Anti-lynching journalist, Ida B. Wells, was quoted in that same article about how the lynching of her friends, Moss, Stewart and McDowell, “opened my eyes to what lynching really was, an excuse to get rid of Negroes who were acquiring wealth and property and thus keep the race terrorized and ‘keep the ngger down’,”* Wells wrote.
I see MAGA cult actions not flowing from a desire for “Lebensraum”, but maintenance of White supremacy’s racial caste system and historical privileges.

A worry about “Black folks doing better” reveals the falsehoods at the center of common stereotypes about Black people. After all, you don’t have to worry about economic competition from people who are “stupid and lazy”.
You only worry when they are truly capable of competing.

Trump’s program was international, Keep China down, co-opt Russia in some kind of grand White alliance, deputize India, Australia and Japan as junior partners in the “Quad” and dominate Europe the way the US has since WWII, but at less cost.
The following article indicates that the wealth gap between blacks and whites has gotten wider, on that front, white supremacy has not been reduced as your argument seems to imply. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahhansen/2020/06/05/heres-what-the-racial-wealth-gap-in-america-looks-like-today/?sh=3aa705d3164c)
The real challenge for the MAGA crowd and all Americans is the changing international situation not some nonexistent challenge from blacks to some abstraction called “white supremacy”.
“one swallow does not a spring make.” A few wealthy and visible blacks is not a challenge to whites, They see them as signs of the system’s decadence and heralds of the ‘evil’ Jew who plots their destruction.

Interesting that you would read that in my argument. I’m well aware of the status of the system of White supremacy. To me, it is an ideology, not an abstraction.
A few wealthy and visible blacks is not a challenge to whites…”
Agreed. The real challenge to the White majority (and the MAGA cult in particular) seems to be the thought or “prospect” of Black people improving their social and economic conditions. They tend to think of Black and White in zero sum terms: if Black people are perceived to be doing better, White people perceive they are doing worse.
White people in the USA waste so much time and energy comparing themselves to Black people, they fail to see how far they’ve fallen behind other White people.
Small, middle income economies in Eastern Europe have faster broadband, universal healthcare, better infrastructure and more effective educational systems. Yet, there are White people in the US stewing with resentment over Beyonce’s millions or the sight of a Black Army general.
The concept of Whiteness and the ideology of White Supremacy has been a highly effective tool of control over ordinary White people by their wealthy cousins for centuries. These concepts will likely retain their potency during my lifetime.
In fifty to one hundred years, maybe not.

To me that’s an effect not a cause. To me, the cause is the rise of China as the most powerful nation in the 21st century. The universal hostility that fact elicits is shared by all Americans regardless of color. Abagond and others on this blog demonize China as much as any MAGA-ite.
When jefe began to write nonsense about China and even recommending Steve Bannon as some kind of expert on the place, I was roundly denounced as a “wumao”, “fifty cent army” for pointing out the flaws in the arguments used. I didn’t object to the labels since it made my case that a common front exists between left and right in the USA when it comes to dealing with foreigners.
It used to be that what was good for GM was good for the USA, now that the bulk of GM’s profit comes from China, I can see why a MAGA-ite or a BLM-er would feel some discomfort with that fact and wish for the halcyon days of undisputed US supremacy. White supremacy was the brick and mortar of that period.

MAGA types feel this is their last stand. They are trying to position themselves for political dominance in 2042 or failing that commit genocide against perceived enemies/supplanters. They plan to literally shoot their way out of demographic change. They always start with Black people beccause Black people form the base of the racial hierarchy.
It is no accident that the average age of the MAGA cultist is around 50 years old.
White people that age or older grew up with certain expectations about their place in American society. They want to prolong their position at the top of the racial hierarchy and maintain patriarchy indefinitely.
Even if they “enlarge” Whiteness with Asian and Latinx descent Americans, it will be fundamentally different from the pan-European, Anglo-centric Whiteness of the 20th century. White “purity” will be long gone. They will be the polyglot group, the mutts of the Global North.

I so disagree. Americans are so insular that China is not even on their radar.
MAGA cultists might spend some brain power on the place of China on the world stage. However, I doubt it. They are squarely focused on maintaining Whiteness as the sine qua non of American identity.
BLM and associated organizations are squarely focused on ending police violence against Black people in America. They have other stated agenda items, but police violence is their primary focus.
What does maintaining Whiteness or working to end police violence have to do with China?
The only group that fits your description are the corporatists and their lackeys in DC. They are trying to contain China’s rise. The irony is their hand in creating modern China. It’s called thinking for oneself. You, on the other hand, show that you’ve been trained to repeat the crap the media feeds you. Let’s begin with this ccp bs, ’tain’t no such thing, the organization you refer to is the communist party of China (cpc) called the ccp to make it look like it’s some kind of ethnic party engaged in ethnic cleansing of minorities. People like me who point out that such claims are lies get accused of ‘adulating’ the cpc. I’d like you to show where I’ve twisted the facts to make the cpc look better than it is?
Americans claim, absurdly, to ‘care’ more about the peoples of China than the cpc. Since when did targeting them with nuclear weapons was a sign of caring?
The cpc, on the other hand, has raised the income of the peoples of China, lengthened their lives, fed them and provided them with medical care.
Anyway, this topic is not about China, it’s about what’s eating the average white citizen, you should be an expert on the subject.

also a global viral pandemic seemed to provide uh momentum and assistance,
interesting how the most racist white people also have a problem
with wearing a cloth over their nose and mouth ,staying at home ,maintaining a safe distance from others to avoid spreading the virus
because they don’t believe in the virus even when its killing them.
also obviously don’t think we are all in this together
because the core of their life belief is a imaginary old white male created everything and controls everything because he can do anything
cause he and they are white and white is better than black and white people are better black people and men esp white men are inherently superior to all other life esp females
who even though are their mothers sisters wives and daughters

the slur name of female dogs reverse spelling gets you god
why I don’t sexual intercourse unfairly and harshly know
seems deliberately design to formant permanent conflict
maybe that why I so frequently feel angry sad and frustrated
