The ten songs I would take with me to a desert island, listed from oldest to newest:
- 1973: Marvin Gaye: If I Should Die Tonight
- 1973: David Ruffin: I Miss You, Part 1
- 1976: L.T.D.: Love Ballad
- 1986: Force MDs: Here I Go Again
- 1990: Cynda Williams: Harlem Blues
- 1991: Mariah Carey: I Don’t Wanna Cry
- 1992: Sade: Feel No Pain
- 1999: Angie Stone: No More Rain (In This Cloud)
- 2007: Keyshia Cole: I Remember
- 2009: Ciara: Never Ever
The trouble is, most of these make the list for nostalgic reasons – it is almost a journal in musical form. Each song is like a key that unlocks a door to an important memory, some of them painful. But that means I would almost never listen to them because otherwise the key would wear out and no longer unlock the door. And yet I do not want to be without the key….
