Diahann Carroll (1935-2019) has just passed away. She was a Black American film and television actress, probably best known for playing Dominique Deveraux on “Dynasty” (1984-87), Whitley’s mother on “A Different World” (1989-93) and the title character of “Julia” (1968-71), the first hit television show in the US starring a Black woman. On this blog she is best known for starring in “Claudine” (1974) and being one of the best Black women on television ever.
Requiescat in pace.

I grew up watching her on so many shows. She was always the epitome of class. Something that is seriously lacking in Hollywood. She was a true trailblazer. Rest well Queen 🙏🏾

I grew up with “Julia,” and later “Claudine” — and I’m glad. She showed little Black me that my divorced, then-single, hardworking Mama wasn’t alone, nor was she who America said she was. Like my Mama, she was beautiful, elegant, and no-nonsense in our raising. She was also a grown-assed woman, with grown-assed woman desires. Rest in Power, my Mama-Sister-Friend…
