Remarks:
This went to #11 on the US R&B chart in 2019. I really like this song except for one thing: Nicki Minaj. Why she got to talk about her genitals in her songs? Why? I was hoping this song was a shameless rip-off so I could listen to the real song minus Nicki – the song does sound familiar – but it samples “Heads High” (1998) by Mr Vegas, which I have heard before but is not nearly as good.

But compare this to last week’s Salt ‘N Pepa ☹
Times sure have changed.

@ Abagond: Perhaps you might want to take time out to enlighten yourself in regards to the intersectionality of women in the sub culture of Hip-Hop. Perhaps just enlightening yourself on the intersectionality of women having agency over their bodies and expressing themselves however they wish.

@Solitaire: Even during the time of Salt n Pepa there artist like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown had graphic lyrics and they too expressed their sexuality.

That’s true. I just never listened to them much, I guess.
And there are male rappers with lyrics that are much worse. You have a point about intersectionality and women’s agency.

Most musicians don’t write their own music, if I recall. Destructive rap music will always be the order of the day.
Plus, the way I’ve been seeing things, Black Women are being socially engineered to be the whores of the world. Not just American society, I mean the WORLD. You should see how Japan views dark skinned women.
Nicki is just another cog in the social engineering plot.

I really like this blog except for one thing; Abagond. Why does he have to talk about Black stuff all the time?
Hold up.. Before you slap my knuckles with the false equivalency ruler, I’m sure you get my point. Maybe her music isn’t written for you.
Personally, there’s a lot of song lyrics I don’t enjoy, especially when I hear kids with earbuds singing them. Then I remember that time I asked a teacher if we could swear as long as it was in a song lyric before playing “Highway to Hell” for the class to sing along with. Yep, I’m old… but I digress.
I can’t help but feel that complaining about the genital references in a song that also includes sex, drugs and excessive drinking references is like watching a sci-fi movie with English-speaking, time-traveling, humanoid aliens that land only in the United States and complaining that the laser sounds are unrealistic (because everyone knows lasers don’t make noise).
I may be off base here, but I think the lyrics are about feeling powerful over others. There’s a whole sub-genre of Rap/R&B that’s about being “better than” or “in control” whether it’s leveraging money, guns, sex or all 3 to achieve that power. Comes off as compensating to me, like rednecks in lifted diesel pickups. But, just like those trucks, it’s hugely popular in some circles. It also has to be tough to be in a position of having “made it” but know that your continued success is entirely at the whim of your studio and fans. Creatively, that has to weigh on a person.
