Mary Elizabeth Taylor (c. 1989- ) is that Black woman who has been sitting behind Judge Neil Gorsuch during his Senate confirmation hearings for the US Supreme Court. She is the Deputy Director of Nominations at the White House, part of President Trump’s team in charge of getting Gorsuch through the Senate and onto the Supreme Court.
Was she put there because she is Black? Maybe to make Gorsuch seem less racist? Most likely. When the camera pulls back you do not see any other Black people – just her. And yet there she is right behind Gorsuch. Just like how Trump puts Black people behind him at his lily-White rallies. It is not like she is the lead staffer or something. The number one person on her team, former New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, sits farther away from Gorsuch, off-screen. The number two person, Makan Delrahim, has way more experience with confirmation hearings, yet there she is.
At the White House Taylor is part of the legislative affairs unit, which the Obama White House said worked “with senators, representatives, and their staffs to promote the president’s priorities.”
Her boss at the White House is Amy Swonger, a former lobbyist who, like Taylor herself, used to work for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
In 2011 Taylor graduated from Bryn Mawr with a political science degree. In the summers she worked as an intern, at the Senate (2006-2009) and at Koch Industries (2010), run by the Koch Brothers, the main moneymen behind the Republican Party.
From 2011 to 2014 she helped to run the Senate cloakroom, becoming one of four Senate Cloakroom Assistants. According to CNN:
“The cloakrooms are off the floor of the House and Senate chambers, and they are similar to what other offices call break rooms. Lawmakers might work on cutting deals in the cloakroom, or they might just kick back and watch television. Each party has its own cloakroom. Floor assistants and cloakroom attendants are among those who work in the rooms. Their duties include alerting lawmakers when votes are coming up, telling them whether the chamber will be open on a snow day and working with pages to deliver messages.”
In 2012 she was a Public Policy Leadership Fellow at The Fund for American Studies (TFAS), a “year-long networking and education program […] designed to develop young leaders with a shared commitment to helping improve public policy,” according to the website. To qualify you “should be committed to the ideals of free markets and limited government.” She is almost certainly a Black Republican.
From the cloakroom she became an aide to Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, the most powerful senator in the nation. As aide and as cloakroom assistant she has “developed personal relationships with Republican senators,” according to the Washington Post. That would make her valuable to the White House in its dealings with the Senate.
Even though Twitter has noticed her, it seems the press has not (yet) interviewed her.

I am reading such racist comments—and I am wondering what her skin color has to do with her impressive list of accomplishments? Are you saying that she can only be “token” because she is black? Or that she is an educated black? If the writers are black, shame on you for denigrating an obviously very educated and polished young woman. Who cares if she is black or white? What do you know about her as a person? Why can’t a black person support Gorsuch as he is praised by both Dems and Republicans? Im sick of the identity politics and overt racism that have taken over our country’s common sense and decency.

So we’re talking UN-proportionality–unless you’re reinventing English? Kind of 1984-ish. In this book the terms mean the opposite of what they say; the Peace Department is really the War Department, if you like your doctor and health plan you can keep them, period–Oops that’s Pres Hussein, not 1984…..
That also explains how blind people place 39 dead black killed by cops on front page news and completely ignore:
Homicides in Chicago in 2016 skyrocketed passed previous figures, rising from 496 in 2015 to 762 in 2016, CNN reports.
Chicago: 75% of Murdered Are Black, 71% of Murderers Are Black
The numbers are horrifying. — news proportionality. (y/n)? also known as fake news, fake outrage, fake concern, etc, etc.

In another setting, where you’re not so myopic and eager to seek group approval I’m sure we could get along. the “Sharina likes me!”-thing is purely coincidental in terms of someone else saying that.

The Brits say arse, Americans say ass. The French say âne, The Germans say Esel. People who use the word arse tend to have Brit influence–it is a guess I risked, over a non-dynamic medium–which tends to be chancy but may speed up the conversation.

Re: black American reparations. Just some thoughts…
This is never going to happen. It’s cute but think about it, rich blacks in New Orleans and greater Louisiana owned slaves, HAHAH…but this is not why Reps won’t happen, they won’t happen because whatever happened to blacks in America is nothing compared to what has happened to Native cultures all throughout the Americas. That’s why, for example the Aztec people speak Spanish, and many Indians in Cochise County, AZ all have day jobs at American owned businesses, for example. This will not sway you I suspect, and so I will not do a thesis on the matter–just a few idea heading your way.

I had a mamaw, a Big Momma and Birmingham,Al would be my ancestral home town(mom). But so wouldn’t Haverhill, Mass(dad). Dad would be a Yankee as you say. I’m a Yankee like President Hussein is Kenyan? Moving on….
I think I know what the problem maybe here, you’ve created a persona that has you in a corner among the folks who visit the site, and you can’t let them down? If you were to engage me in an honest (non hostile) conversation, you’d run the risk of incurring the wrath of those who label Mary Taylor as they do, and for no justifiable reason. I can understand your reticence, but the choice of your nom de plum–avatar?–is one that interests me. I didn’t pick it, you did. At any rate Miss Solitaire, between you, me and the digital world I suspect the truth about us is somewhere in between how we appear to be. I am fascinated by your choice of Solitaire, simple as that.
In the 1960s the French were surveyed, “What is the most beautiful word or words in English?” They responded that the words “Cellar Door” sounded the most beautiful. I say the word Solitaire, as is passes through the lips and drifts toward the ear, is a close second, if not first. But I’m not French, but if I was I’d be a good one. Besides the sound, I’m not particularly fond of cellar doors, no matter how the words sound.
Dear Nomad,
Re: the Kenyan-American thing? As I see it, you are entitled to your opinion, and an argument could be made supporting your views. However, African, Afro (somewhat archaic these days)-American is not incorrect because Kenya is clearly part of the African Continent. By your argument President Hussein would also be Kogelo-American–the village of his ancestry. As I see it.
At any rate what I got a chuckle out of, and wanted to show you, was his Brother Malic posting Obama’s birth certificate from Kenya
Now for the matter of “truth.” We mostly know what we read, are told, and manipulated into believing, or are so desperate to believe we block out any contradictions. Unless we are involved with the decision makers, or if we’re actually shaping those decisions, all our information is handed to us like food on a plate. One of the biggest benders of any truth is the internet, social sights, etc. and who knows whose really posting what with a link to nowhere? About nothing much?
Finally, Dear Robert Hunter, re: collateral damage.
This is a misdirection. At the base of the issue is survival. You wish to portray America as evil because we have and are killing really nice vulnerable people in our attempt to defeat an enemy bent on our destruction and who care nothing about our really nice kids and innocents. All I can point to as far back the VN War, (probably much much father) is that America has worked on, developed and perfected (nothing’s perfect) smart weapons to reduce collateral damage. ISIS has publicly drowned, burned and beheaded cages of women, young girls and children forcing others to look on. The Vietnamese communists chopped up and tortured women and children as a matter of tactics carried out by so-called Dick-Van squads..the list is long, you hate America? Then nothing I said will assuage your bitterness, but some may read and get another point of view. That’s why I just tossed something out there.

I’ve been forthcoming about my identity since I began posting here. If you lurked more, it wouldn’t be a big secret.

Dear Solitaire,
You are soooo cynical. It wasn’t meant as a defense. My Navajo buddies used to mock me when I told them I was part Indian. I mean these guys came off the Res. I’m used to it.
Maaaaybe I “lurk”.

You also need to read this:
I see you’ve met your fellow racist New England Yankee. Like you, he isn’t French but thinks he’d make a good one. He’s also never met a racist uncle he didn’t like, so you two will have fun together.

Abagond–I cannot dispute your decision. I do think there is great envy over “the Chocolate Orchid”. Whatever the reason she was featured behind the Judge; she has to be judged a beauty—-

Dear Solitaire,
I did shoot over to the open site and read some of your comments on cars that handle easily, food, places, etc.I did not go back to 2011. Don’t care about fake Indians, don’t care about race; I’m not racist. People who focus on race are racists.
Finally, of interest to me, is the choice of Solitaire as your name, and Mary Taylor, which brought me to this thread. I did not find much about that elsewhere. Thank you for being kind enough to point me to places you thought might be of some help.
Good Luck in your endeavors. I wish both you (and Mary Elizabeth Taylor!) success and happiness. It’s good to know America has such people — R

“too much to ask?”
Yes. It is.
You think you can be an @sshole to black people and be unrepentant and not suffer any repercussions for it. Yes, that’s too much to ask.

Neither my post on the 1949 film “Pinky” nor this one about Mary Elizabeth Taylor, were about you. You were not mentioned even once in either post. If I am wrong, then please point out where I did.
If you must talk about yourself, please do it on the Open Thread.
Thank you.
