Remarks:
My favourite U2 song by far, though I like “One” (2006) and “Everlasting Love” (1990) too. I used to play this to death. In 1987 it went to #1 on the pop charts in their native Ireland and in New Zealand, to #4 in Britain, #11 in Canada and #13 in the US.
When Bono wrote the song he was thinking of Belfast where you could tell a person’s religion and wealth by what street they lived on.
Brian Eno is on organ, The Edge on guitar, Bono sings. It proved to be a hard song to get right.
They made a self-important video which won a Grammy but which I hate. It gets in the way of the song – unlike the video above.

Lyrics:
I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
That hold me inside.
I wanna reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name.
I wanna feel sunlight on my face.
I see the dust-cloud
Disappear without a trace.
I wanna take shelter
From the poison rain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We’re still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It’s all I can do).
The city’s a flood, and our love turns to rust.
We’re beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust.
I’ll show you a place
High on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We’re still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It’s all I can do).

I liked Boy, October ans War – by the time of this song I was pretty much over them.
I’ve only seen them once live (backed by Oingo Boingo at the NBC arena in Honolulu).. Bono climbed the rafters to pour Champaign for those in the cheap seats. They put on a good show.

Bono and I are the same age and I grew up loving his music.
The first song I ever heard was “I will Follow” .
He did two songs in remembrance of Dr. King.
One was Unforgettable Fire which was like a lullaby.
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thunder cloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Rain down on him
So let it be
So let it be
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Let it rain
Rain on him
The other was Pride which still sends shivers up my spine when I listen to it.

I like this song too, especially the beginning, but my favorite of theirs is Stuck in a Moment:

U2 was my favorite band when I was young and this song was my favorite out of all of their songs. Thanks for posting this. I’ll have to dig out the old CD’s.
