The term is little used in the UK. The narrower “institutional racism” is quite regularly seen and heard, but not “structural racism”. I don’t think it’s regional semantics, I really think that the concept is not widely grasped here.
Racism as a power structure is not understood or accepted by most British whites. If they knew it existed, most would deny it.

..I find it hard to believe that the Southern Baptist Convention is not listed as discussing this (having attended Baptist churches in the South, and having heard racism discussed a Lot)-yet, as for “B.E.T.” they haven’t been truly “Black” since Donnie Simpson left so that doesn’t surprise me in the least..Side eye to that ole’ snobby New Yorker mag, too for always havin’ a stick up their azzes, even though it is published in such a multicultural mecca as the Big Apple they still act as “Waspy” as ever!

Institutional racism occurs within and between institurions. The criminal justice system within the state or within the private sector in job hiring or contracts awarded are examples. Both the State and the private sector view society through the lens of race.
Structural racism covers everything within white supremecy. The history, culture, institutional racism, interpersonal relations ect. Sometimes it covers unintended consequences like building public housing in areas where their aren’t any jobs.
Their is this dea that if society is diverse then it will be more equitable and everybody gains. Bussing black children to white schools is suppose to help with this goal. I’m a little skeptical of bussing kids as a means to this end. I think part of the reason for putting black kids in white schools is to allow white kids to become more comfortable around blacks. It also weakens a black communities sense of empowerment.I think the money the money would be better spent bring inner city school up to par with white schools.
Their is also a less obvious agenda which is too not have black communities become economically empowered, thus the emphasis on a “diverse community” being the bench mark for an eglatarian society. If non whites are scattered amongst whites how can they have a community? Historically everytime a black city became economically strong whites burnt it down.
It seems to me that removing the obstacles non whites have to go through to get ahead is far a far more important goal. How non whites wish to organize themselves, whether within their own communities or within a diverse one, is up to those individuals.
So part of the solution is the deconstruction of the Justice system, fixing inner schools and bring yhem up to and providing economic opportunities. This could be in part a form of reparations. Communites under black control of both the education and justuce system including police. Economic incentives through low interest bank loans, tax credits for business and property investments woukd allow communities to revitalize themselves.
In my opinion white supremecy isn’t going away anytime soon.

I just did a Google site search on my WordPress blog. It showed 226 results. That isn’t the actual number of blog posts using “structural racism.” Looking at the results, I appear to have around a dozen or so blog posts that mention it, either in detail or in passing. It also comes up in comments quite a bit in other posts.
I never thought it being a rare concept, but maybe it’s less common than I realized. I suppose if you don’t read extensively about race and racism you might not be as familiar with it. I’m sure its usage will increase in the coming years.

In religious organizations especially in many Christian faiths bigotry was discrimination was practiced especially in Church of Latter Day Saints and the Pentecostal denomination and the Methodist church. Because whites didn’t want to worship with black people and black people had to establish their own churches and organizations. Even in during slavery the racist slave master used the bible and twisted it for their own racist agenda. Even the white supremacist call themselves Christians. Even today many so called Christian faiths do not address the evils of structural racism.

Don’t even mention politicians especially the presidential candidates they really don’t care about racism or black lives matter or any people of color. Even if Jeb Bush is married to a Latina they don’t care about marginalized groups.

But that is just why Sanders got in trouble at Netroots – none of his policies address structural racism. He is resting on the laurels of his civil rights work in the 1960s. Sure, his policies might lift plenty of Black boats, but it will still leave structural racism in place. Blacks will still be the last hired, first fired, they will still have a high drop-out rate, the police will still get away with murder and racially profile them, the school-to-prison pipeline will still be in place, etc. Like many White liberals, he seems to think in terms of class, not race, even though in the US race is a far stronger organizing principle.

Right, I get it. Because Bernie Sanders is better than Ted Cruz or whatever other Republican troglodyte is running, Blacks should just STFU. They are supposed to loyally vote Democratic but must learn to keep their mouth shut.

Like V8driver I’m registered libertarian but would vote for Bernie if he gets the nomination.
Unlike most liberal progressives he is against gun control. I’m not sure if he is pro gun because he believes self defense is a basic human right or because Vermont is full of gun toting hunters who vote.
I like his strong anti war stance and believe his idea of funding education ect by defunding the military industrial complex makes economic sense by avoiding deficits.
I’m not a socialist but don’t think he is going to get too far with wealth redistribution in an empire run by banks, corporations and wall street.
Mirkwood brought up community policing so I want to point out some structural problems that if aren’t addressed only give the illusion that a problem has been solved. Baltimore is a good example of an integrated police force with mostly blacks in the city government yet we continue to witness oppression within black communities. This is because police officers are held to a different standard then the public their suppose to serve and protect. Their authority gives them special privileges. Abagond had a post about what divides the black community which included things like class and religion. I think a third class should be included which I would call the Pretorian class. This class consists of non whites who are in the police and military whose jobs in part allow them to participate in oppression against other non whites and are protected and awarded for doing so.
Mikwood you need to be careful about presuming that blacks aren’t intelligent enough to know the difference between liberals and Republicans or what’s best for their community. Blacks know very well that racism extends to Democrats and liberals and isn’t confined to “Southerners and conservatives”. It is you that needs to reevaluate some of your liberal premises. Blacks are far more socially conservative then whites and have the same if not greater family values.
The area where I’d like to see the most deconstruction is within the criminal justice system. If a person completes a prison sentence then that person should get their rights back. That person has fulfilled their debt to the State and their criminal record should not be used against them when it comes to finding a job, voting and shouldn’t ban them from firearm ownership if their crimes weren’t mental health related or violent. The other area is the parole system that functions as a pipe line back to prison. It set up that way on purpose and needs to be either abolished or completely reconfigured. Michelle Alexander’s book “A new Jim Crow” talks about how the current justice system functions in a way that creates a caste society that people can’t escape from.
Another tactic is jury nullification. Jury nullification occurs in a trial when a jury acquits a defendant, even though the members of the jury believe the defendant to be guilty of the charges. This may occur when members of the jury disagree with the law the defendant has been charged with breaking, or believe that the law should not be applied in that particular case. Communities need to stop sending their citizens off to prison and jury nullification is a tool to obstruct the State in its never ending assault against some targeted citizens.

Your asking Abagond which white supremacy group he favors.
“who puts more police in communities, channels all the wealth to a handful of billionaires, and leaves people unemployed”
Democrats do the same thing. It was the Democrats and the prison/police unions that built the industrial prison complex and it was the Republicans with their 3 strike laws that filled them up. Both parties supported the “war on drugs”. Both parties supported all the wars we’ve been on over the last 100 years. All those free trade agreements including the one Obama had to fight to get through his own party recently have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans and is why America no longer manufactures anything other then cheap cars and weapons of mass destruction.
I like Bernie but I’m under no illusion that a Sanders presidency is going to change too much.

“Bernie Sanders runs a white supremacy group? OMG”
What I mean is America and the West is rooted in white supremacy. Both political parties, consciously or unconsciously, support the infrastructure to maintain that white supremacy.
The house has been built upon white supremacy. Both political parties frame issues around the left side or the right side of the house but its still the same house. Within that house their is a racial hierarchy that’s invisible to the white people who live in that house. Some whites realize something is going on so they added on and built a diversity room where they could go and have conversations with non whites and then “reflect”. Inside the pantry are cookie jars with oppressed peoples names on them that get handed out for good behavior. Whites find the idea that non whites could develop and build their own pantry unnerving. Some whites don’t believe these “others” are smart enough and some whites think its selfish and that everyone should share. All whites feel threatened that non whites could have economic control of some areas of the home and especially the pantry.
The house needs to be gutted and rebuilt. The foundation needs to be demolished and a balanced one reconstructed.

Bingo.
Sanders supporters are pissed that black voters simply won’t board the Bernie Bus and quietly keep to themselves in the back row. They’re scared that an AWOL black vote will knock Bernie out of the box early on and make Hillary Clinton the front-runner. In turn, that puts the Dems in danger of being run over by Jeb Bush or Scott Walker (two of the most likely people to win the GOP nomination and, quite possibly, the presidential election).

Would you consider doing a post about Bernie Sanders? I went to one of his campaign kickoff organizing parties last night and was relieved to find a candidate that not only calls himself a social democrat but also addresses race issues and police brutality. I just hope he has the money to go up against Hillary.
