A cross-post from Ankhesen Mié:
First off, it’s not about us
Let’s be clear: these Black women we constantly see cropping up opposite white men in film and television – like Angel Coulby on “Merlin”, Antonia Thomas on “Misfits” and Katerina Graham on “The Vampire Diaries” – are not being written for Black people’s benefit.
No, no…this is white fantasy at play or, more specifically, white mantasy. These characters don’t even sound or seem like the Black women you would know personally. Almost all of them come off as white women dipped in watered-down chocolate.
They are the white female interpretation of Black women, with no care for reality at all. In their minds, a Black woman is desirable so long as she’s as white-washed as possible.
No, this isn’t new
White men desiring Black women has been going on for centuries. It is what is, and the Black women who are on these shows and in these films are there … because white guys want them there.
White guys own Western media. If they don’t like it, it’s not broadcast. White women may be writing some of these storylines, but it’s white guys who are making sure Black women are put opposite other white guys.
And it’s not going to go away. White guys aren’t going to stop; men just don’t operate that way.
Dilution don’t mean dick
This is precisely why we need to lose the colorist rants in communities of color.
Dark-skinned sistahs, I feel you. But these are our sistahs too, and their struggle is just as real. And despite their light skin and straight hair, the moment they lock lips with a white dude, they become public enemy #1. It doesn’t matter if one of their parents is white – they’re that demonic, full-blooded darkie who’s corrupting/molesting/attacking/imposing themselves on some helpless, innocent white male actor who’s actually living out the mantasy of some white male writer.
It’s just easier for white female fans to get mad at them rather than at the white guys who blatantly want these women.
A house slave is still a slave
Over on the Black Girls Club post, we discussed how a lot of these characters are treated like dirt on their shows. They’re the poorly written punching bag, misfit, “best friend” (*shudder*), and overall handmaiden – having light skin doesn’t save them from this fate. Yes, the white guys may find them attractive (alas, an unfortunate side effect), but their sole purpose is still to serve the white chick, make her feel better, and even been willing to lay down their own lives if necessary to protect the fragile pale princess of the show.
They’re racial insurance; they’re supposed to be concrete proof that the characters and writing and casting staff are not racist.
So they’re not there for us. Our “appeasement” was the last thing on the minds of their characters’ creators.
All these bitter, simmering haters who watch these films and shows need to realize that you can hate the player all you want…but it won’t change the game.
Postscript:
Rereading the post and some of the comments and misunderstandings that followed from it, I see that two points need to be underscored:
- Ankhesen is not condemning anyone. Rather she is pointing out that these black characters are not meant for a black audience but a white one. Therefore:
- These black characters attempt to strike a balance between the needs of white male viewers and white female viewers. (That was clear in the original post but not in my edited version.)

Man I love Misfits! Antonia Thomas is beautiful, but idk what she is doing in this post. She has never been referred to as “black” on the show. I always took her as a mixed race girl. I don’t even think the one drop rule thing is as widespread in the UK as it is in the States

Black people need to stop watching television and start getting their entertainment and information content from the internet. You have more control and better options. I did it last year because I was tired of paying for programs that make black people look like fools. I’m still able to catch all the shows I like plus shows like “Intelligence” from Canada. “Intelligence” is about a sister who heads up an intelligence agency in Canada. American cable programs are so outdated (and unhealthy).

as usual people claim that whites own western media while neglecting to narrow it down further and come to the obvious conclusion that it’s specifically jewish men who own the media.

For all intents and purposes, Jews ARE white. Looking white has made it easier for many to assimilate and to enjoy white privilege. I don’t get the impression that they have any interest in trying to rid themselves of this status. Also, they are well represented in the power structure. Two areas that come to mind are the media, as you have mentioned, and the banking industry. .

I think some people are just upset that blatantly mixed race ladies are getting the limelight. Far from being oppressed, Im sure those actresses are having the times of their lives. If they were truly black (like Mie), there would be not be such a fixation on their physical features.

Can’t say I agree with the idea of all black women having the same experience with being black. But there is a question I’ve never seen asked before.
-Are light/biracial actresses concerned about the lack of equal representation of their darker peers?
-If so are they supporting any efforts to showcase the diversity of the “black” identity?

By the common definition of “privilege” as stated by Abagond and many others, that being high levels of economic success and high levels of in-group affinity with regards to educational, occupational, and social opportunities, Jewish Americans would seem to meet this criteria.
So why do we so infrequently hear and read about so-called “Jewish privilege”? One obvious suggestion is that the modern expression of racial and ethnic grievance requires strict adherence to an arbitrary, politically correct framework.
Criticizing “white people” (in the realm of media and elsewhere) is socially acceptable in the modern milieu, but criticizing “Jewish people” is not. This difference appears to indicate a double-standard.
Perhaps someone can offer a less cynical reason for the disparity.

I don’t understand this post. To be honest I usually struggle to notice any sense in Ankhesen Mié’s posts.
She says these characters are the product of a “mantasy of some white male writer”, but then she writes white men in general like these characters. Where is that conclusion coming from?
She writes about the characters: “almost all of them come off as white women dipped in watered-down chocolate. They are the white female interpretation of Black women”. Huh? I thought it’s a white mantasy, not a femtasy.
Depending which sentence you are reading white men either like characters who “don’t even sound or seem like the Black women you would know personally” or white men are “desiring Black women”. Which one is it? Do they like black women or women who only vaguely resemble black women?
“a lot of these characters are treated like dirt on their shows. They’re the poorly written punching bag, misfit, “best friend” (*shudder*), and overall handmaiden – having light skin doesn’t save them from this fate. Yes, the white guys may find them attractive (alas, an unfortunate side effect), but their sole purpose is still to serve the white chick, make her feel better, and even been willing to lay down their own lives if necessary to protect the fragile pale princess of the show.”
So, white male writers desire them, but they are “poorly written” and are not put in the spotlight, are not given a lot of airtime. The white writers are desiring and ignoring them at the same time – makes perfect sense. Yeah, that’s what men do…
Generally, this is the only sentence I can fully agree with: “They’re racial insurance; they’re supposed to be concrete proof that the characters and writing and casting staff are not racist.”

Excellent question, and one I have been asking for years…no answer as yet, of course!
I asked this of quite a few women I encountered when I modeled and did television ads, and they never had much to say on the subject. It was always, “Oh…well, all you have to do is work hard and you’ll get noticed!”

The battle between real blackwomen and mulatto women is about whitemen being half-ass about their obsession with blackwomen. Instead of putting real blackwomen on these shows, they play it safe by choosing the exotic mulatta…the best of both worlds in their mind. Yes, whitemen run the networks and media in general, but, they’re still afraid of whitewomen. Whitemen may desire blackwomen, but, they don’t know if the majority of blackwomen feel the same way about them. In essence, they have to hedge their bets…one foot in whiteness, one foot in blackness. I’m not shocked by their fascination with mulattas, because, pictures don’t lie. The Kim K’s of the world didn’t pop up by accident, whitemen raped a lot of blackwomen on this planet, it’s hard to not notice it on a daily basis. It’s always been about blackwomen…Always! As for the mulattas, they’re not the issue, their black parents and whitemen are the issue. One group wants to put them on a pedestal they don’t deserve, another group wants to use and co-opt their perceived blackness for selfish gain. I’m actually vaguely confused inregards to the picture choices, are the first three images supposed to be a representation of the “black girls” or the mixed race girls?
Because if its the diluted ones, the only one of the three who stands out is the third one.
And Saldana may have straight hair but her skin is at moderately brown and her features are fairly non-white.
I can see a couple of these; the one above the house slave is still a house slave looks like she’s mexican more than black.
But one question I have is; if white people like their black actors to be as white as possible, than why isn’t the last women pictured in this post the most famous black actress alive (presuming she’s not dead and they didn’t just use her image as an example)?
I mean; she’s way whiter than anyone else in this post.
As for “white girl dipped in chocolate”, they can’t be written as a stereotypically american black person(especially in the case of Angel Coulby, a black women in an ersatz medieval britain) because that would be racist.
And since they probably don’t really interact much with people of african descent, once you get past the gross generalizations you can make about one group or another, that just leaves them with what they are aware of, white people.
So they just write what they know at that point.
Also; maybe its just me but the post seems to be of the opinion that people writing these characters into the plot because white guys want them there is worse than doing it simply to appease them.
I would have thought that people actually wanting characters of african descent to be on their shows would be preferable to doing it simply to make black people feel better.
I’m not saying the general message of this post is wrong, saying “don’t be hating on biracial people” because they are mixed blood is a good message to send, don’t get me wrong here or that regardless of level of african in them white women have some bias, not denying that because they do.
I know from my own experience, often when white women notice I’m attracted to black women, they get this bizarre look of almost betrayal on their faces regardless of whether or no they themselves date interracially.
And its not something I recall seeing whenever its asian, mexican or otherwise.
Of course I live in the South so that might be part of it there.

Grrrrrr….I’m mixed, and I’m not ‘white’ or ‘half-white’, I’m Black. Black and mixed (I don’t like the term mulatta because it means mule’s ass). I am not Black because my skin color is medium or my nose is thicker than my white skinned mother’s or because of any other feature. I’m Black because my ancestral heritage is sub-saharan African. This heritage is unmistakably visible. I am Black because my father was Black (he passed away years ago).
I recognize that I have privileges because of my lighter skin and “white” speech pattern. What you may not understand is that despite these privileges, or perhaps because of them, I grew up keenly aware that I was not considered as valuable, intelligent, beautiful, etc… as my white classmates. In fact, one of the reasons I liked the 80s show “Family Matters” is because the family’s daughter, the main character, was a dark-skinned woman. This was rare, and it did not escape my notice. I took pride and pleasure in it, because I knew that light-skinned girls I saw on TV and in magazines were a compromise. I knew that dark-skinned Black men might find me desirable simply because my skin was lighter, and not for any other, more important reason.
Because I understand the opportunities I’ve had that my darker-skinned sisters and brothers haven’t had, and because I am the direct child of a white-skinned person, I try to admit and counteract these imbalances (when I have the courage. I’ll admit it is usually easier to slide by than confront things clearly). However, I am Black. Nothing will change that. Not even the jealousy and resentment of my darker-skinned sisters and brothers.
What WILL change, however, is that Blacks will continue to be divided along color lines. Understand that with imperialism, invasion, appropriation, etc… the weakest link (and the most powerful links) will be found at the meeting point between cultures. What this means is that when mixed members of an oppressed group are rejected or discounted, they will go where they find some type of acceptance, even if it is a twisted, parasitical and destructive kind that is simply offered in order to further the oppression of those who are mixed and their oppressed family members. This is what I’ve come to believe from reading about how imperialism takes place most effectively in different cultures and time periods. If that seems too convoluted, understand this: we need each other. We need every type of strength and ability that each one of us possesses. Without it, we will fail. I don’t think there is any ‘halfway’ (pardon the pun) concerning this.

Because of Abagond’s word limit, much of my original article is missing. Nevertheless, Tyrone is pretty close.
This about compromise. WM want variety, WW don’t. Thus they have to strike a “compromise”.
So a BW can be on these shows and in these films – per WM request – but by WW decree, 1) she has to be whitewashed/diluted as possible to avoid further promoting WM interest in BW, 2) she is never the central figure and usually in a subservient role, 3) she is more likely to be missing from most scenes, and most likely to be killed off, 4) she ALWAYS generates a negative blacklash from white female fans.
This is why, I think, the creators of Merlin changed tactics on their show. Angel Coulby won the role of Guinevere over 300 other actresses on a show created by an all-WM crew. On Merlin, Arthur rejects one WW after the other for the dark-skinned Gwen, and WW drop like flies on that show. So when the predictably negative backlash increased, the creators toned down the humor and romance, added more male actors to the cast, darkened the show’s theme, and upped the level of action and violence. It’s as though they were trying to change audiences, confirming that this was their fantasy, and bitter white girls need not apply.
When the BW on the show IS the central figure (or close enough) and is of darker tint, that show goes either nowhere (Night Stalker, Missing) – or she simply gets killed off as quickly as possible (Nikita). I addressed this in the “Black Girls Club” linked above.

This is also about colorism.
There’s this misguided notion amongst POC that if a light-skinned POC is working in Hollywood, they don’t have to struggle and they have it easy. Granted, they have it easier than darker-skinned POC, but they don’t have it “easy” in general and their struggles for work should be respected and acknowledged as well.
Now, I wrote the original post because a commenter on my blog stated it was disgusting how a show like Merlin – for example – would make Guinevere a WoC to “appease” POC. But appeasement is the last thing on these white showrunners’ minds. They don’t care whether POC watch their shows or not. These BW all have WM as love interests – that’s not for the benefit of Black PEOPLE. That’s strictly to serve white mantasy.
If you refer to any of these actresses as Black (esp. if/when the actresses themselves do), or even simply as women of color, it’s always WW – both fans and haters – who rush to “correct” you because they’re not comfortable hearing that the white actor they admire is starring opposite a Black woman. The very phrase “Black woman” summons an image they’d rather not entertain with a white actor in mind. “Bi-racial”/”Mixed”, however, is a bit more tolerable.

This is fascinating to me. I understood that Black women would resent Black men dating white women, and it was clear that having Black women (even mixed or light-skinned) on white shows was about tokenism and fetishism of Black women’s bodies. But I didn’t think that white women would feel so upset at having white men prefer, or even romantically like, Black women. I just hadn’t thought about it that way.

I think you have to really stretch your imagination to see her more than just European – phenotypically speaking. You also have to accepted into the Black community as Black and I doubt this this the case with her. A few drops of Native blood does not make a White man “Indian”, nor does a few drops of African blood make a woman Black.

Well when you “enter” the minds of the average white man and speculate what they are thinking and why I believe that is a shot in the dark. There are so many factors why people think the way they do and race is just one of them. Look I’m Married , but I do look. There seems to be an inconsistency here. Lighter women are being cast as victims of opportunity (and encouraged to capitalize on it) while their darker peers are told to focus on the big picture and not to cause a “divide”. Darker women (and black people in general) didn’t create the disparities or privileges that benefit their lighter peers but if they (darker women) want to discuss it they are sent on a guilt trip with a very patronizing lecture about racism and the white media. How do you marginalize such a large demographic in the black population and think you’re promoting solidarity?

I’m actually crying right now.
I’m a mixed heritage black woman from the UK. You can’t understand the level of torment I’ve been through in the United States. Words cannot express…
My skin, features and speech has caused me so much grief.
You guess it, by mostly whites, female whites.
White men hit on me due to the fact that they feel “safe” around me.
White women at work despise me and try to prove me incompetent to the point of making up stories and planting the seed of doubt to others.
It is a never ending cycle of fear, desperation and envy.
And, make no mistake about it, they are fully aware of their actions.
When Viola Davis won her SAG award, her speech was so spot on, I felt my heart flutter. How do you explain Angela Basset and Cicely Tyson never winning an Oscar?
How do you explain the same generic whites in Hollywood ” making it big ” leaving coloureds unnoticed?
I have dark-skinned siblings.
I know that the sting of racism I feel is magnified times 1000 when it comes to them.

First time i’ve posted on this site and topic so here goes. A lot of the biracial females you’ve posted pics of happen to be from the UK and the UK is different when it comes to race. These women aren’t put in these roles as black women but as what they are which is mixed. The UK doesn’t put mixed people and black people together as one, were both separate and different although that doesn’t mean that mixed actors haven’t played the role of black characters.
Now that i got that out of the way i feel white men generally cast mixed women more then black women is because of the beauty standards and also to satisfy their racial quota when it comes to casting minorities. They use mixed women as a buffer to stop black/minorities from complaining that their shows doesn’t have enough diversity and also to appease their standards of beauty in women (which they hope will attract viewers)
I don’t think white women have any bearing on how white men act when it comes to casting black and black mixed women.

Just out of curiosity, why so called mixed are such an big issue? Is there something “wrong” with them or why some are so anoyed with them? Isn’t this kind of categorising just one aspect of the racist america system? If the lighter brown skin is seen better in US, is it not just a another way of the System to divide blacks into smaller sections who then argue with each other and then forget what and who should be the real target?
Should the lighter skinned women refuse to work in the Hollywood and on tv if they get the roles only as tokens and because they are lighter in complexion than other black actresses? Do men have such difficulties in casting? I remember seeing some quite normal looking black guys of all colors in very different roles from the president to the prison warden to police chiefs etc. How do you see the situation?
I am asking this because I see lots of speculating, arguing and discussions here on this blog, not just on this thread, about the lightness or darkness of the skin among the black commentators. I think it is very interesting subject which reveals how deep the racist racial thinking sits in the american “mind”. One drop rule, different variations of the skin color and their meanings and supposed advantages etc. Very very weird stuff.
Thanks for clarifications!

@ Mik – I could say the same to you, why do whites focus on rape involving black men and white women whilst overlooking rape commit by white men on white women which is in a larger abundance than with rape involving black men. Your media stereotypes the black man as being nothing but violent rapist yet you look at white history and it’s nothing but rape and violence, the definition of a real crime sheet.

Its not really a “lifestyle” per say, gay people are gay regardless of whether they have sex or are active in their community and are actually second to black people when it comes to having to endure hate crimes.
Gay people are born how they are; much like anyone else is born a race, I know as a straight man the idea of having a relationship with a male is a impossibility.
And he didn’t just say negative things about how gay people act or social movements they might support making them hypocrites or something, he said he would kill a child of his that turned out gay.
Its closer to someone saying they would kill their son or daughter if they ever dated a black person.

Because the darker skinned blacks feel hollywood is making them out to be crimenals What system are you talking about the white system?
Should the lighter skinned women refuse to work in the Hollywood and on tv if they get the roles only as tokens and because they are lighter in complexion than other black actresses? Do men have such difficulties in casting? I remember seeing some quite normal looking black guys of all colors in very different roles from the president to the prison warden to police chiefs etc. How do you see the situation?
and give up there job? Because some people are jealous and sitting on there ass complaining about how the white world has mistreated them?
I am asking this because I see lots of speculating, arguing and discussions here on this blog, not just on this thread, about the lightness or darkness of the skin among the black commentators. I think it is very interesting subject which reveals how deep the racist racial thinking sits in the american “mind”. One drop rule, different variations of the skin color and their meanings and supposed advantages etc. Very very weird stuff.
Thanks for clarifications!
its been weird since the dawn of time I believe.

The UK doesn’t put mixed people and black people together as one,…
I agree that they ‘separate’ when it suits them yes but, there are also many times when they dont discern. The film Secrets and Lies comes to mind when they had an obviously BW (Hortense Cumberbatch) playing the role of the adopted daughter looking for her mother which turned out to be a WW played by Brenda Blethyn. This suggested to me at the time at least that they didnt care to authenticate the role as ‘Black is Black’ regardless of how much others perceive it to be ‘dliluted’
were both separate and different although that doesn’t mean that mixed actors haven’t played the role of black characters.
To some, yes it is a primary factor but, for those who are people of mixed heritage that embrace their black heritage with their very being I dount they see themselves as disparate from the rest of the black race though admittedly, their experiences may well be different…

There is no compromise. This kind of look represents the type a significant amount of white men likes. When you look at lad magazines, movies, music videos, etc it’s obvious that for most white men a beautiful POC woman is a woman looking very white. White women are not making white men choose Adriana Lima over Oluchi Onweagba.
“she ALWAYS generates a negative blacklash from white female fans.”
And how often do these characters get a positive response from white male viewers? If white men want variety why doesn’t it show in the ratings? How come the actresses don’t have a dedicated white male fan base? If white men want to see WM-BW couples on TV why aren’t they supporting them and the shows in any noticeable way?

@ Eco, I confused by the article, too.
1. I hate when people assume there is a certain way black people speak and behave. Do black women with British accents sound black???MadameNoire writer attempted this with Paula Patton and there was a backlash that I participated in.
2. It’s true these characters are NOT meant to appease blacks…ONLY. They are a comprise. Black enough to avoid accusations of racism, but not “too black “–looking so as to alienate or offend white mainstream audiences. Also, black women are seen as less threatening than black men, and are therefore safer for white audiences to deal with. So, these women serve as comprise for white-male dominated society.
3. The author accuses white women of treating or projecting onto black women, but I disagree. It’s white men who project on to black women. When Zoe Saldana was up and coming, confusion about her race and ethnicity (Hispanic or black?) garnered her many white male admirers…the same admirers who turned away when they realized that a) Hispanic is not a race, and b) that means Zoe is black, of African descent. The point: white men liked her more when they thought she was NOT black, but when her “blackness” was confirmed, they started turning away.
PS. Many of these female characters have NO love interest on the show. Its rare for white actors to romance black females, even in 2011.
In real life, most white men, at least in North America, prefer to date biracial or mixed race women, if they show “any” interest in black women at all. I don’t think it has anything to do with white women. I have come across many white guys who tell me they’ve dated black girls, and usually, the “black” girl is biracial.
4. I agree with you about the author about “racial insurance.” Funny thing. I was reading an essay by Nigerian-American author Nnedi Okorafor about “magic negroes” in the writings of Stephen King, and the first image that came to mind was Bonnie Bennett (Katarina Graham) on the Vampire Diaries. She’s the most powerful female on the show, but is second-fiddle to Elena (Nina Dobrev). In one episode, Damon told Elena, ‘if it comes down to [ me saving] Bonnie or you, it will always be you.’ Bonnie sacrifices herself, including her grandmother’s life (and likely her mother’s life now), to save Elena.
The vampires rely on witches all the time to set, break and unleash curses, and even save lives, and all the witches on the show are played by black (mixed race women usually). The witches are all expendable, including Bonnie, despite having more worth than Elena, whose life she’s always saving; They come and die for the white characters, always pawns in their games. Like Nnedi wrote in her essay, a magic Negro’s only worth is to sacrifice herself/himself for the powerless white protagonist.

@ Some guy, the issues spoken of is about black women, mixed women, white men and white women, so it concerns almost everyone. To resolve or to change(or at least to see progress) the problems concerning the issue you should listen to everyone(or just skip and NOT read it) and not just hear one side. Aren’t we trying to narrow the gap and try to come together!?
(And being gay isn’t a lifestyle, sexual preference is something you are born with, and guys and girls that are gay are now treated like they are not equal, they do not have share the same rights, which is ridicules)
Further, I would love to see more color on t.v. and in books. When I was young I could not relate to any characters in the books I read. I felt out of place and once even wished to be white, that is how bad I felt and how difficult I found it to relate and to be inspired. Especially when you are young you try to find similarities with , tv, book, movie characters in order to relate and to find inspiration and more.
These days you have more but still not enough, a lot of different people(black , Asian and people who are homosexual ) are not (or barely) represented in the media which is sad, because it is not reflecting our beautiful(not thinking about global warming) real world filled with the beautiful variety of people that occupy it!

I can only say is that even though this is how the white male-owned media operates and that we shouldn’t expect more or less from them, it’s still extremely aggravating that this continues to happen. What makes it even more infuriating is that those same images are broadcast all over the world and people outside the U.S. will internalize those images.
Yes. We need to create our own form of media and tell our own stories presenting our own characters, but we still live in a world where many people will listen to the wrong folks with more power and privileges than they deserve. Not only that, those same sheeple will be (further) conditioned into looking for those kinds of ideas as opposed to other ideas and images.
This post is a perfect case of that reality. Even though Hollywood is no less racist than any other American institution, it still makes a lot of money through white supremacy, racism, and discrimination. Whiteness is Hollywood’s blood.

One thing:
I’m a white guy. My family is as white as snow. Well, was until my sister married a black man and made mixed-race babies.
The experience has shown me this:
White people don’t see mixed race. They see blacks. Mixed, if say, 10% black, might be more white – that might pass. But anything more than 20% black is black. White people are just that racist, as a rule.
My nieces are discovering this: Blacks reject them as too white, white people consider them black, as black as a black brother in Atlanta.
White men don’t debate how black someone is and then accept them or not. They think with their dicks.
Schwing = hot chick. Black or not: Irrelevant.
All the debate is female projection and race theorizing. White men are not so complex. Schwing = hot chick. Black? Ultimate test: Erection or not?
Women are so ultra-competitive with each other, they grab onto anything. White women were very judgmental of me when I was dating a black woman. I got divorced, dated a black woman for a year, and it was presumed it was “all I could get”.
This was only presumed by white women. Why? Oh – damaged goods, divorced, smashed ego, etc. Took what he could. Truth was, she dragged me out of my hole and treated me like gold. She was an angel. I was with her at first because she was, well, female and I was devastated. I stayed with her because she was awesome.
Her blackness: Schwing seemed to operate regardless.
Imputing extensive motives on men and seeing color shades in actresses is a waste of time.
Men are beasts, when it comes to this. Simple.
Women have byzantine, arcane competitive mechanisms which intersect and play on levels men can’t be bothered to understand. It’s a waste of time to try: Women will irrationally cling to *ANYTHING* to put down a rival.
Today it’s race. Tomorrow, age. Then shoes. Whatever. They’re status-obsessed and ego-torn.
Men: as long as we’re getting laid, that pretty much does it. I’d have had a problem marrying black when I was a kid, and would worry about consequences culturally for kids. But if a black woman did it for me, and some have, I’d marry without question. When the white chicks get all natty and catty and make snide comments, I get had two reactions: 1) Are you that delusional? and 2) Fuck off.
My brother in law is a black man married to a white woman. He gets reamed all the time, he tells me, by black women. The haterade leveled at him is obvious even at work. There are single black women he’s hired over the years, and he says he never got more grief from any employee than he got from both of them.
The married one was fine. The single ones were snide and made contemptuous comments from time to time.
Sometimes it looks like racism. Much of the time it’s just the normal Human excuse-making bullshit we spew.
BTW, men really are that simple.

Ankhesen – Thank you for the article. I enjoy reading your blog. You see so much that flies over most people’s heads and it’s always very interesting.
I also think that what you’ve written about applies to all POC versus mixed or `Whiter-looking’ POC. The racially White Latin Americans or light-skinned Latin Americans are preferred over dark-skinned or Black Latin Americans. Whiter-looking mixed race White/East Asian people are more prevalent in Hollywood than full-blooded East Asians. Light-skinned South Asians are more popular than dark-skinned South Asians. Also, almost all of them play into a negative stereotype that places them below White people, or they play into a stereotype that satisfies White fantasies about each group of people. e.g. Latina maid vs sexy Latina, dorky Math expert vs kungfu master, computer geek vs exotic Indian princess.
While I can understand the animosity towards Mik, I don’t see how mocking Asian people and telling them this blog is none of their business will help. It only serves to alienate other posters who have done nothing to deserve it. No white guy I know will turn down a date with a hot black woman. Not a single one.
Ever.
many white women will turn down dates with even very hot black men because they’re black.
Men are obsessed with beauty.
Women are obsessed with social status, above all else. So long as there is disparity in social status, black men will be objects of racial objectification (dangerous Bad Boy Black Guy) or discarded objects of contempt (low-status male = trash). This is an almost wholly female prerogative.
Men will bang anything, by and large. Not only that, once banged, many men will attach themselves, as well as their loyalty, to a woman who is both loyal and decent to them.
White men are far more flexible when it comes to mating than women. This is true across races.

This is an interesting perspective. I’d say it’s more like a liberal media is trying to pretend the world is colorblind and rosy. It says nothing about white men; it says much more about trying to force interracial mating on a resistant white culture.
It’s like the stereotypical geeky computer nerd; Usually, this guy is Asian in real life, maybe slightly less often white. But on TV, it’s always the fat black kid, these days.
It’s about Changing the Culture by Forcing it through the Media.
If you pretend women are men, there’s no racism, and all mating is entirely random, and maybe even white guys like black women more and white women like black men more, then maybe – society will move that way.
I work in media. I’ve been here for 10 years. I work with these people. They really do think this way. There’s an honest to goodness Politically Correct way to think. Half the time it’s actually MORE racist than just describing reality.
I saw it in advertising, in film, and in TV. It’s ubiquitous. The amount of self-censorship that goes on it vast.
I don’t think that show’s producers think they’re promoting White Men as attractive. They’re showing off how Liberal and Non-Racist they are.
That’s all.
Among white people, being Non-Racist is an urban badge of honor. When the little cute charming black peoples stand up and say – hey, cut that crap out – the white PC crowd gets antsy. Black people are supposed to go along with the Colorblind Script: How Dare You Betray My Good Intentions!
I’m 100% sure this is the gist of that show’s casting.
LikeLike
Another note: The biggest victims of this PC sentiment are black males. As males, they get shafted; family courts are, if possible, more anti-male for black men than they are for white men. And yet, commercials on TV pretend there’s no family trouble in black America; indeed, it’s white men who are evil. Black men are saintly and misunderstood, and black women are wise Yodas with knowledge to dispense.
These are blackface caricatures. Liberal media just removed what they thought were the negative elements from traditional stereotypes and left the others.
It’s just as dehumanizing. And in this media war, the clear winners are black women; the clear losers are, ultimately, black men. Men generally. But especially black men.
What white media liberalism does is drive a wall between black men and women. All men are demons, black men slightly less so, goes the attitude; black women are poor creatures who need help, always victims, never agents. We cant touch black men, so go after white men.
So when the upshot hits the fan, cops throw black men away for longer than white men, make it easier for abusive black women to turf black guys from matrimonial homes, take away their kids, etc.
Color-blindness and things like that show you mentioned contribute to this.

1. Ankhesen is not condemning anyone. Rather she is pointing out that these black characters are not meant for a black audience but a white one. Therefore:
2. These black characters attempt to strike a balance between the needs of white male viewers and white female viewers. (This was not made clear in the post and that is the fault of my editing, not of the original post).

Most black Canadian girls would identify more with these characters than ones in other movies with black women. I am happy that they are showing the many different personality traits of black women as well. It neutralizing them being black and they are seen as just being a woman. Which is a luxury usually only white and asian women are afforded. I would definitely like to see more awkward, quirky, sweet yet sexy etc characters that are black as there seems to be an unlimited profile of traits for white characters in the media.

That’s pretty much how I see it. A diverse cast is supposed to get a diverse audience, but at the same time it shouldn’t be too ‘ethnic’, because that can make white people lose interest. At least the positive, friendly characters should be as whitewashed as possible. Villains don’t have to be whitewashed, because the white audience isn’t going to want to relate to them anyway. This approach was used in that Rihanna video you mentioned. A dark-skinned man was probably seen as ‘too black’ to play a romantic lead, but just right to be a negative stereotype.
Generally, the ‘black women are less threatening or more likely to be accepted than black men’ thing seems to be going away. At least in my opinion. I think it was much more noticeable a few years ago.
“white men liked her more when they thought she was NOT black, but when her ‘blackness’ was confirmed, they started turning away.”
I didn’t notice that. Were they losing interest because they started to associate Saldana with a different set of stereotypes? Did she become ‘too black’ in their eyes? White men do seem to prefer the ‘white girl dipped in watered-down chocolate’ image over women who are simply seen as black.

It just seems to me and many other mixed race Americans that the one drop rule as deployed by several on this site is self-centered. Some seek to impose black identity on pretty much everyone with any amount of African ancestry no matter their physical appearance or cultural background. However, these droppists also seem to want to define that identity largely in terms of the experiences and interests of dark-skinned blacks. Sorry, but mixed people aren’t putting up with this nonesense anymore. Just check the most recent Census figures on multiracial identification.

Gorbachev, nothing unrealistic about three black women married to white men getting together. Look, in a country like the USA or France white folks are more common, with their white hubbies they might live in dangerously white hoods. Imagine a party, with say 300 white folks and three black wives, big chance that that they have counted, classified and contacted eachother before half the white people even have bothered to notice their presence.
This is possible. Still, it’s hardly typical. It sounds like more posturing. It’s definitely not a call for black chicks to start swirling tomorrow because white guys are so awesome.
I dated a French woman who was the child of Senegalese immigrants; as black as night, not in an American way, I mean in a West African way: I’m going to guess not a single drop of blood was white or anything but West African. She was absolutely French, and it was more or less nothing but dating a French woman. We were together a year. In certain circles, it was considered normal. In others, we got some grief, but mostly from Muslims (black). One once threatened to injure me. Another time in a restaurant when a patron, white and very French, got sniffy with me and my ex took it out on him with a few choice words. The racism directed against her was toned down because she was pretty and youngish.
This woman had more white men on her than any white woman. But this was France. There’s oddly more and less racism there than in the US; it’s different.
I have no idea about Rhea’s comments above, re: Canada. I was there a few times over the last few years, and the relative ethnic peace up there impressed me. Clean cities, few poor areas, a crazy number of mixed couples. I remember I was in Toronto in Ontario province and not just romantic couples, but even just friends out for drinks, were often mixed. Mixed couples seemed like they were everywhere. I walked through one university and was stunned at how many mixed black / non black and generally mixed young couples there were. It was almost Pollyanna time.
I’d like Rhea’s take on this. I was generally impressed with Canada, especially Vancouver and Toronto.

The majority of “black” women on TV are mixed, but the majority of black women in real life are not. Ppl say biracial women represent black women, when in reality, they REPLACE black women. I find it bothersome when some people try to pretend there are NO differences between black women and biracial women.

You can’t really blame the longer jail time for black men on the liberal point of view, I’m pretty sure thats always been a problem for them.
Just like white men get longer jail time and harsher sentencing than white women.
And the whole men are animals and women are angelic creatures of purity and grace doesn’t come from the liberals.
Its older than that, much older, its actually been pretty much the argument been used by men/christianity for many years to keep women down.
oh your too innocent, pure and noble to truly understand the world or deal with its harsh realities, so just stay here and let the big ol’ man take care of it.
It even see’s some use today on some level when discussing rape, some men just can’t control their urges etc…..
Think about how relatively new it is that women are portrayed as actually enjoying sex on any level.
All coming from a pretty old school belief in our culture.
Men are looked at as being notorious cheaters, despite statistics being pretty close, men cheat more than women but not as much as you would think.
Or even spousal abuse, you almost want to kill a man for abusing his wife but what about the other way around?
If anything considering its origins its more of a conservative/republican idea than a liberal one but thats not really accurate either because its an idea that predates either republicans/conservatives and liberals/democrats in existence.
While men are definately willing to have sex with black women, that doesn’t mean they view them as attractive, men when horny will have sex with anything, especially if they think nobodies going to know about, fat women, ugly women etc….
Not saying that their aren’t attractive black women out there or that there aren’t white men who are attracted to them, just saying that the standard of men willing to have sex with someone means they are attracted to them isn’t really true.
For me, having sex is kind of like getting a massage, preferable to have an attractive women to do it but if one isn’t available and ugly or fat masseuse will do just as well.
And of course, sex and relationships are too different things, so are general relationships and marriage for that matter.
On one hand I agree with you; white people/men don’t think specifically too much about whether they are dealing with “mixed” or black people, it pretty much just comes up as “black” in their minds as a specific thought but check out how harsh law enforcement can get and as this post points out they don’t like them “too” black.
They do need to be black looking, if they start looking too white but not black either that doesn’t seem to help them.
@jay from philly
Non-racist liberal white people usually live far away from black people but so do well basically all white people.
And on top of that when white people do move in to black neighborhoods its gentrification and attacking their culture/lifestyles.
@Eco/Mel
I would have to agree I haven’t noticed any real lagging of attention for Saldana, I mean she was just in that Columbiana movie as a headliner wasn’t she?
Also statistically speaking; the majority of US-Black Women are mixed, black people as a whole really, I believe its 7/10 that have mixed genes in them.
Admitably for most of them its far more likely to be 3% than 30% but its still there.
@Mel/Gorbachev
Interracial couples account for about 4% of the population in canada I believe with a 30% rise between 2003-2008 in them.
Interracial couples in the US account for about 14% of couples.
To be fair; both articles I found were from 2010 so I don’t know how accurate they are now.
Interestingly enough in Canada mixed race marriages also earn more than couples in marriages that aren’t mixed race.
Though yeah; seems to be a notable amount more mixed couples in the US than is in Canada.
Maybe mixed race couples in the US watch TV more than ones in Canada and so the Canadian ones are more visible?
Of course this is marriages that have a higher amount, not just general “coupling” so maybe there is more of that in Canada than the US.

One thing this post got me thinking about is; whether or not white men wan these characters on the show.
Its not white men “who don’t want them” its not white men who call them “mean” or “hateful”.
The ones who do that are the white women fans of these various shows.
And as the post points out; the treatement of black women/people is a battle between pleasing both genders of the fans of these shows.
So the question that comes to my mind is this, are they being white washed for the men or are they being white washed for the women?
Setting aside all PC-liberal attempts to avoid appearing racist or stereotypical that is.

Whitewashing them for white women doesn’t make sense. White women apparently don’t like them anyway. According to Ankhesen Mié: “despite their light skin and straight hair, the moment they lock lips with a white dude, they become public enemy #1. It doesn’t matter if one of their parents is white – they’re that demonic, full-blooded darkie”.

Well; the fact that it maynot be working to try and have lighter skinned black women as romantic interests so as not to offend white women doesn’t mean its not being tried.
Especially since we are talking romantic shows, movies etc….not porn and shows of the romantic sort or when those elements are featured in media of one kind or another, are generally aimed at women, not men.
That even got mentioned in the comments; they first aimed for something of a light hearted romance comedy action style with Merlin and then when the white women complained they dropped much of the romance/light heartedness and focused more on action?

I wonder if these characters are not also white-washed for average White men to feel more comfortable with them. That they are not `too foreign’ for them to understand and relate to in some way, but still `foreign’ enough to be considered `exotic’ and desirable. It’s always the half-White, half-something-else or those who look like they could be that mix who are deemed the most attractive. That’s how you get these myths that all mixed race people are hot when, just as in any other racial group, you have beautiful people, ugly people and everything in between.
@ SomeGuy
I accept your apology. I understand you were probably annoyed and did not give it a lot of thought because you want to defend this place from trolls like most of us would. Everybody makes mistakes.
Though I will say that making a racial insult towards an individual unfortunately does not make it specific enough. The insult definitely was not this bad, but if there is a Black person trolling, calling him/her a `n***er’ then saying it was only specifically towards that person does not excuse the insult towards all Black members here. Hope that makes sense and clarifies my earlier point.

“Well; the fact that it maynot be working to try and have lighter skinned black women as romantic interests so as not to offend white women doesn’t mean its not being tried.”
If a few shows did this that would be trying an idea. When dozens of shows use it, it’s because they know for a fact it works. The big companies, corporations who run the channels and make the shows don’t like experiments. They want to minimize the risk of failure and maximize profits. They rely on tested, safe ideas and recycle patterns, character archetypes, plot lines, etc.
The fact that this type of character is relatively common means that using them is profitable. So, who is the target audience? I think it’s POCs and white men. I’m not saying it’s about benefiting people of color or appeasing them. It’s about selling them a product, making them watch the show. As I mentioned in previous comments – I think that a diverse cast is supposed to get a diverse audience, make the characters relatable and/or the show interesting for different groups of people.
In my opinion white women are not an important factor because they seem to have very similar responses regardless if the character is played by a multiracial woman or a black woman. Most white women accept either type as a ‘black best friend’ character and a significant amount of white women dislikes either type when the characters are paired with white men. If the ‘whitewashing’ doesn’t noticeably change their perception of the characters why assume it’s being done for them?
I think it’s about what white men like. Ankhesen Mié and her sheeple seem to believe that the majority of white men secretly desires black women, but that’s just self-serving wishful thinking. When you look at the media targeted at white men it’s obvious that black women are rarely on their minds. Most white men respond much better to images of white or multiracial women. So, casting multiracial women as these characters does affect how white men see them – the characters are much more likely to be considered attractive.
“Especially since we are talking romantic shows, movies etc…”
It’s not limited to one genre. This kind of characters appears in fantasy, action, sci-fi and even in animated spy-comedy ( http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3978661632/ch0199493 ). It’s not just shows targeted mainly at women.

This is true. I am not certain why so many black women are obsessed in proving white males are in love with black woman. As a black female, I am somewhat disturbed by this, because I see it as desperate; as if black women are searching for/in need of validation from white men. In other words, we need to believe that white men desire us to feel good about ourselves. This is not true.

“But if its just aimed at men; then why do it in shows/movies that are specifically aimed at women?

Because the shows want a diverse audience, not just white women. In this case these characters are supposed to attract POC women and being multiracial, racially ambiguous makes people of different ethnicities see the characters as their “kind”. That’s obviously better than a black character reaching only black women. Colorism amongst POCs can be a factor too, but I have no idea how strong its influence is – it can be insignificant.
On the other hand, most white female viewers don’t mind the POC characters. When some white women don’t like that fact that the characters are in relationships with white men they whine about it on the internet, but usually they don’t stop watching the show.
So, including POC female characters can get the show a POC female audience and at the same time the risk of losing a significant amount of white female viewers is low. That’s how I see it.

Whites and other non-blacks think they can impose themselves upon our race, therefore, becoming black by default. That’s what all this nonsense is about. The post-racial crowd lacks the courage to admit this truth. It makes no sense for black people to destroy themselves just to make those who are not black happy. Other races need to be happy with who they are, and black people need to do the same. Mik, i don’t care about being liked by others…Don’t Care!
Black Father + Black Mother = Black
Black Parent + Half-Black Parent = Black
Half-Black Father + Half-Black Mother = Black

Whites and others can’t continue to exploit black female beauty and sexuality in media and entertainment, and still spit on the psyche of blackwomen at the same time…this is the crux of the issue. It’s not about whether or not sistas are beautiful, sistas shouldn’t waste time with that nonsense. The status-quo can’t continue in it’s current form. Parading Sofia Vergara, Eva Mendez, Eva Longoria, and other mixed whitewomen all over media is not fooling anybody. Whitemen think they can continue to fool us with this nonsense? @tyrone: how have characters like Uhura in Star Trek (Zoe Saldana) and Alisha in Misfits (Antonia Thomas) ‘spat on the psyche of black women’? If anything, they’ve given me more confidence to feel proud of being myself, and that I don’t need to conform to any stereotype to be be accepted, and loved. it’s partially why this article really pisses me off, because it assumes that other ‘black’ people don’t watch these shows/movies and relate to these characters, viewing them in a positive way. and neither characters I mentioned were really treated like dirt. to suggest Uhura was treated like dirt is simply laughable, and Alisha was mainly significant for being in the iconic Alisha/Simon relationship that most Misfits fans adored. tbh, Alisha started out a bit stereotypical, but then the character became more complex over time, which I really liked. sure I’d like to see more dark-skinned people like myself on TV, but at the same time, it’s not like I can’t relate to people who are a different skin color than me, or from different cultures. at the core, humans really aren’t too different from each other

This is the real deal with half-black women like Zoe Saldana. Whites in hollywood can’t continue to spoonfeed us watered-down versions of the real thing. Blackwomen can love Zoe and Halle as much as they want to on their own accord, that’s not the issue. Blackwomen want to see real examples of themselves in media, black and white. We love to say that black is beautiful, but, how can we claim that mantle with any shred of credibility as african people? I want to see sistas with kinky hair and chocolate-fudge skin staring back at me on the “Idiot Box.” Blackmen gotta come clean on this issue, Dee. I completely agree with Tyrone’s comments. I think he’s being honest in regards to mixed-race people and their identification.
As a Black British woman I do not see mixed race people as being black -they are part black but that’s it but if some of them want to identify themselves as black – This is up to them. I also noticed that in the UK they are using biracial women in these shows to replace black women because they are not comfortable with seeing Black women in a variety of different roles
Black actresses in the UK have noted this trend for the last 10 years and I think it is a way for the White British public to show they are accepting of black beauty but only if it is white-washed. It was become rare to see a dark –skinned black woman portrayed as desirable on British TV. Sad but true!

I don’t deny my other lineages but I feel more comfortable being African.
I agree that mixed race women make whites more ‘ comfortable’ than all-black women due to the fear factor.
I also agree with Tyrone.
This happens all over the world, using lighter whitewashed versions of the ‘real thing’ due to discomfort. In India, the caste system is still very much alive.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s very important that we as black people bring some form of sanity to this issue, so, it doesn’t swallow us up as a race. Black people have varying degrees of like or dislike when it comes to the biracial offspring of black/non-black unions. When i was a youngblood, i didn’t care about the issue all that much. As i got deeper into my teens, i started to notice that a lot of black male actors and athletes were not in relationships with blackwomen. This is the point in my life that i changed in a profound way. As i stated earlier, inter-racial didn’t mean jack to me, but at the same time, not loving blackwomen was unacceptable to me as well. Seeing how whitemen stayed loyal to their women, made me question myself and us as blackmen in general. I want mixed-race individuals to understand this fundamental point, my beef is not with them. I have conflict with blackmen who use whitewomen and other non-black women as a weapon to hurt blackwomen…Real Talk! I’ve never fallen into the colorblind trap. If whitewomen and other women were so much better than blackwomen, there would be no divorce, separation, arguing, violence, etc. I’ve interacted with and seen too many blackmen treat other women like dirt to believe their bs. A lot of us are jacked-up right now, jumping into bed with “other” women is not gonna solve all of our problems. If other races of men want to mix and mingle, more power to them. What other men do has no relation to us…Bottomline! As men of african descent, we can’t afford to play that game…Seriously! The stakes are much greater for us than it us for them. Loving blackwomen is not a choice. In order for our race to continue to grow and advance into the future, we must work as a team to make the dream of our ancestors a reality. Other women can birth half-black children, but, they can’t make us in god’s image. Not trying to offend other women, just stating the facts. It’s sad that biracial children are stuck in the middle, we can’t choose our parents. As far as black identity is concerned, it should not be forced upon half-black people. Being mixed, and choosing to live your life as a black woman or man is up to you. That aspect of the issue doesn’t bother me that much if the parties involved are sincere about their love for blackness and black people. Black people are blessed, i can understand why so many people want membership in our race. Flattery is cool and all, but it can’t drown out common sense. If we want the planet to be “Black Again” as it was in the beginning, hating our blackness is not gonna make “it” a reality. The more black people love themselves and each other, the greater benefit to humanity as a whole. “Black Eros” is the advancement and upliftment of the black race via love, sex, and marriage. As a blackman, loving blackwomen has always been a political statement in and of itself. Being sexually attracted to the women of our race is just as important as other aspects of black culture…No Doubt!

Thanks for the feedback. Biracial children are not the problem, their parents are the problem. The black parent to be specific. All of us know that mixed is mixed, it is what it is. Just because a half-black child may look more african in terms of phenotype, doesn’t negate the fact that they’re mixed-race. This is where the fun starts. Mirrors don’t lie. If you look in the mirror and see a blackwoman or blackman staring back at you, you’re going to identify with the image in the mirror. A lot of half-black folk don’t care if one of their parents is non-black, they want to be black. Being half is not good enuf for them. This is especially true for those such as Truthbetold, who are darker in color. Even if he told others he was mixed, they would still see him as a real blackman. The lighter the complexion, the more complicated it is to be half-black. Not that they can’t identify, but it’s harder. “The Swirl” is an issue that black folk have to deal with, because, all human beings want to be what they were in the beginning…BLACK! That doesn’t disqualify other races, but, being black is what it’s all about whether we want to admit it or not. I say (Blackness Is The Ultimate Aim & Objective) as much as i do because it’s the truth. Others may disagree, but i can only go by what i see in the streets on a daily basis. @ Thank you Tyrone for your reply. unfortunately, in the UK more than half of the black men of Afro-Caribbean descent are with WW which means our community is slowing being erased in Britain. This one of the consequences of interracial relationships. Please note, racism is still rife in the UK despite the high number of BM/WW pairings. I also like to add that many BM in the UK openly and proudly proclaim that they do not want to date BW and prefer WW because they feel ‘they can relate to them better’ or they find ‘BW to be aggressive’ or ‘not attractive’ which is very sad.

The situation in the UK is slightly different from the States. BW in US is at least portrayed as being attractive and desirable on their media for example singers, actresses, presenters etc. Whereas BW in Britain (unless you are bi-racial female) are rarely seen in this light which does affect BM sub-consciously into believing White female beauty is more desirable . If you excluded women from your race due to internalised self -hatred (White Supremacy) then it is a problem – this is the truth! If you constantly see all the time Black Footballers, actors, politicians etc marrying WW in the public sphere then this will make you think this is normal not questioning why a high number of them don’t want to marry or date a BW.
In comparison to Chinese or South Asian community in UK, most marry within their culture, plus I do not see Chinese males saying openly on radio, Newspaper articles and television shows how they find their own women unattractive unlike a lot of BM in the UK do.
In regards to Afro-Caribbean community, I stand by what I say. It was become increasing hard for BW of Afro-Caribbean descent to marry a male of this background due to the high numbers of BM dating out or with WW partners -This is a fact.
Therefore, as result our numbers are decreasing. I’m not talking about the African Community who generally marries within their own culture but specifically the people of Afro-Caribbean descent. Also many people of bi-racial background end up marrying White people and procreating White offspring – so how is the black community benefiting or increasing their numbers in UK as result of all these interracial relationships?
Sorry if you don’t like my opinion but there consequences to dating out and it’s become a taboo in the UK to talk about it but I stick by what I say. You can agree to disagree which is fine by me.

There problems are they desire whiteness and not there own skin color. Plus all the models and actors are porclien WHITE. I don’t care if blackmen get offended, the truth is gonna come out anyway. Afrobrit, what’s crazy about this mindset, is that, a lot of naive sistas are boosters for the same group of so-called brothas who stab them in the back with impunity. This is a global problem, it’s not just the UK, US, Brazil, etc. We have to remember that whitemen have no shame using the women of their race to destroy blackmen, and whitewomen have no problem using their sexuality to get back at blackwomen. Remember, whitewomen have never forgiven whitemen for what took place during slavery, we can’t forget that. Whitewomen have an axe to grind as well. Blackwomen represent what they can never be, which is black. It’s obvious what they’re doing. If it was about colorblindness, they wouldn’t have a sexual fetish for one group of men alone. Blackwomen are aware of this, but, there is no such thing as freedom of speech in the UK. I don’t know why so many blacks live in the UK anyway? If blackwomen and concerned blackmen can’t speak honestly about the colorblind racism of black male/white female relationships, what can they talk about with vigor? Afrobrit, you mentioned the fact that a lot of these men are from the caribbean. @Mik,
One thing you don’t know about is Asia. While it’s true that Western beauty standards have influenced Asia, the trend to seek taller, paler and larger-eyed women has been going on for hundreds of years. In fact, a strong case can be made that the recent emphasis on preternatural thinness in Western models is a starkly Asian influence on Western ideals of beauty.
By and large, Asian women conform to the ideal White-Western model of beauty far more readily than even White women do. it’s one of the reasons you see so many Asian models: Their bodies naturally fit the ideal far better than white women generally do.
Note the trend. A lot of white women are getting pretty resentful of Asian women generally.
Asia has, in many ways, effectively absorbed Western culture in an anti-colonial sense, and possibly dodged it. What we see as a Western-inspired worship of beauty is, in fact, at least in Japan, Korea and China, relatively ancient.
The ideal: Thin, tall, graceful, pale as possible and with proportional breasts and ass. And large, wide eyes. This has been part of the Asian idea of female beauty for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
As much as the West is colonizing Asia (which you claim you see in media), Asia may in fact be doing the reverse.

Then your statement goes into the whole realm of how black women are supposed to act vs. how their not supposed to act. People only emulate what they’ve learned in the culture they were exposed to, ethnicity doesn’t defy how one is supposed to act.
And yes over the years white men have lusted after black women in secret, however, thats a stereotype as well. Some white men might look at black women as their preference. Some don’t. Since society shames the idea of black women being percieved as beautiful, classic, and angelic, its almost as if no one’s proud to admit there are white men who find black women sexually attractive.

Whitemen are sexually attracted to blackwomen, that’s not in doubt. As the guilty party, pursuing blackwomen is a problem. Whitemen have to deal with blackmen such as myself, who will never make it easy for them to achieve their goal. Whitewomen, and their uneasy feelings about them and their “Chocolate Cravings.” Not knowing for sure if blackwomen would even want them anyway. Measuring up to blackmen in the bedroom. Having a spine, and not being a stereotypical wishy-washy white guy, etc. A lot of ish goes into a white male chasing after various flavors of chocolate, Indeed! The BW/WM issue doesn’t get under my skin the same way as BM/WW, because the greater problem is self-hating blackmen creating turmoil within our race. I’ve always believed that it’s more important for blackmen to love blackwomen, Always! If we don’t love the women that birthed us, we’re dissing ourselves, spitting in our faces, shooting ourselves in the foot, and so forth. I love and respect womanhood in general, but, it’s not the job of blackmen to take care of other mens’ women…Bottomline!

Afrobit says,
The situation in the UK is slightly different from the States. If you constantly see all the time Black Footballers, actors, politicians etc marrying WW in the public sphere then this will make you think this is normal not questioning why a high number of them don’t want to marry or date a BW.
laromana says,
Afrobit,
Although mixed race BW/mixed race looking BW are portrayed as being attractive/desirable in American media, BW who are darker skinned/typical looking BW are NOT commonly featured as attractive/desirable in American media.
Also many ANTI-BW HATER American BM routinely engage in the PUBLIC trashing of the humanity, dignity, and femininity of BW (and encourage OTHERS to do the same).
This is a MAJOR reason why BW are the LEAST respected women in American media/culture.

Although I appreciate the fact that you are a PRO-BW supporter who is commited to challenging BM to learn to love/respect BW, I think you need to steer clear of creating the impression that BM decide with whom BW do/don’t CHOOSE to have relationships or from making generalizations about how BW may/may not view NON-BM when it comes to relationships.
BW are UNIQUE, INDIVIDUAL, HUMAN BEINGS and we’re FREE to CHOOSE WHOMEVER we WANT to love/date/marry, REGARDLESS of what ANYONE thinks.

I love blackwomen first and foremost. If i and other blackmen don’t love blackwomen, there won’t be any black folk to fuss about anyway. This is what you and other non-black men fail to comprehend about us as blackmen. We have more to lose by mixing too much with other women, that fact can’t be disputed. Black folk who get caught up in the madness, end up regretting their actions after the fact. We see this indecisiveness with puerto-ricans and other spanish blacks who mixed way too much and now they’re not black anymore. They know they effed up big time, but expect other blacks to embrace them as authentically black at the same time. It’s bulls**t Mik, blackness doesn’t work like that. If the vast majority of blacks on this planet had the mindset of spanish blacks, our race would be extinct right now. I love my spanish sistas and brothas, but they’re not right in the dome right now, and they know it as well. Mik, black people can’t view the inter-racial issue in the same way as other races, We Can’t! I want you and others to know this about us. We have just as much right to maintain the viability of our race as anybody else. As i’ve said before, everybody can’t be black Mik. If i could make that a reality, i would. On the other hand, if everybody was black, that would be boring as well. Folk need to be happy in their own skin, especially men. I can’t be white, and you can’t be black…Logic 101 Mik, whitewomen can’t take the place of blackwomen, Not Possible!

Tyrone that fact can be disputed since so many black man marry white woman and tell there kids your black first taking away the whiteness of there children. First of all we are all black. Second of all if we were not of one race we couldnt kids together well it seems your not happy in your own skin since you only want to date black people.

@Milk, I don’t agree with your statement in regards to Tyrone. Black men might tell their kids they are black but they are not. They are bi-racial, you’re then denying that child their White parent. How do you feel about this?
In relation to Tyrone showing his love for BW, I think this is a good thing. Many White men openly say they love their women only and no one says nothing, it’s acceptable. No one says it’s racist but if a BM says he loves BW only, it’s a problem for people. It’s okay to you for BM to say they hate BW? It’s seems this is fine but showing love towards BW is wrong and racist even if it’s from BM – Oh dear!!
Keep doing your thing Tyrone!!

Mik, blackmen can’t love every race of woman on the planet…Not Possible! There aren’t enuf blackmen on the planet to make that possible anyway. We’re not the only men on the planet, are men of other races that bad Mik? Yes, women love chocolate and all, but other men have the same ish that we have…What Gives? I love blackwomen, i don’t want whitewomen, asian women, and so forth. No blackman should be afraid to state his love for his black sistas out in the open for all to see, because other men do the same. Just because blackmen have access to non-black women, doesn’t mean it’s in the best interest of our race to throw blackwomen under the bus just to make other men upset and jealous. This is the game that a lot of blackmen play. They have no sincere love for many of the whitewomen they chase. The women are turned into sexual pinatas, which is dead wrong. If blackmen have beef with other races of men, don’t exploit their women to get back at them. Mik, i understand what you’re trying to get across to me, but, we as blackmen can’t get caught up in “Utopia.” I think you’re a sincere person at heart. I assume you have a fondness for black culture and blackwomen as well, otherwise, you wouldn’t be on this blog. I’m still upset with what was done to our foreparents by whitemen. My angst is real, i don’t say the things that i say as a joke. I keep it 100 at all times, so, it’s not personal with me. Appreciate black people and culture, but realize that you’re not in our shoes. It’s not about what’s best for non-blacks, it’s about what’s best for us as african people…Bottomline!
Laromana, i agree with all that was said. Blackwomen can sleep with whomever they please, but, that doesn’t mean i’m gonna ignore it either. Men are not wired that way Laromana. We fight over women, and always will. Men want to keep their women to themselves, and co-opt women from other men as a bonus, this is how the game is played. Is it sexist to view women in this light, of course. At the same time, it’s reality. I don’t want you and other sistas to be in the dark when it comes to the issue of blackwomen and non-black men. Blackmen have a double-standard because they want other cake, but don’t want other men to have access to “Chocolate Cake.” I’m selfish just like every other blackman, but i’m upfront about it. Stay sweet Laromana.
Afrobrit, appreciate the love sista. Blackwomen are the heart and soul of our race, and always will be. Blackmen can’t turn their backs on you and other sistas, because it’s not in our best interests to do so. Our fate as blackmen is in your hands sista, we can’t stop loving you regardless of whomever and whatever. I don’t need everybody to love and respect me. As long as blackwomen respect and love me, I’m Good! Tyrone will never stab you in the back sistas. I don’t see that ever taking place in my lifetime. Blackwomen are a blessing to blackmen, and we will appreciate what we have in you and other blackwomen, Afrobrit! Stay Black…Stay Sweet…Stay Strong!!!

Racial equality is about mutual respect first and foremost. Yes, the various races on the planet should be able to coexist in like fashion. All of us can agree on that point. As to the issue of intermarriage, it’s a “Hornet’s Nest” for black people. Black people can mix with other races, but it comes with a price. The children that are born from biracial unions have dual racial identities, but their parents want to label them as black only, which is insane to me. We’re told that it’s about colorblindness, but is that really the case? Why would a black person downplay their blackness via their non-black partner, yet, want their child to be seen as black? I’m trying to understand the mindset of blacks who support IR relationships, because their logic is not making sense to me. The hypocrisy is what gets under the skin of black people. Black folk have no loyalty to the race, but they want their mixed children to enjoy all the benefits of being black…Not So Fast! I’ve seen this movie before, and it doesn’t end well. Mik, i don’t see the benefit in applying your mindset to this issue. Spanish blacks are proof enuf that african-americans don’t need to go down this road. They’ve been brainwashed to see themselves as spaniards, not black people. The result…a bunch of mullatos, mixed-whites, and indians/mestizos who spend an inordinate amount of time obsessing over black people and culture. That may be cute in the eyes of others, but, where are the black people? So, it’s okay to dilute and destroy blackness, and obsess over it at the same time. This is what we have come to know as so-called “Latin Culture.” White and chicano spaniards have co-opted african culture for their own benefit, meanwhile, spanish blacks are still brainwashed to disown their black roots, WTF! Instead of seeing Christina Milian and Gina Torres all over spanish and american media, we’re spoonfed tweeners such as Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Lopez, and Eva Mendez. They’re considered safe for white male consumption, threading the needle more or less. They’re whitewomen who look like blackwomen. They satisfy white male lust for blackwomen without openly offending whitewomen at the same time…Genius! This is the game that’s played by whitemen today. Parade the “White Black Girl” all over the place with the intention of making consumers of media think that they’re pure-blooded whitewomen, which is not the case. They can kill two birds with one stone, they can have a blackwoman cloaked in whiteness…Very Clever! If this is the bs that comes with race-mixing, i don’t want any part of it. Black folk are better off staying black. “The Swirl” is a ponzi scheme that doesn’t accomplish it’s stated goal, which is blackness. Wannabes and brown-nosers are the only group of people that benefit from the insecurity of black people…Ditto! Whites and others who are not black need to let go of the impossible. Imposing their racial insecurities on black folk is lame…They Need To Get Ova It. Mik, stay true my friend!!!

What a fascinating read. I can’t believe how long I’ve been here seeing I started looking for a few facts about the wonderful Angel Coulby.
I was mostly wanting to make one point and was interested that it’s barely been touched on. Biology. In several centuries the true dark skinned black will be rare. So will the true pale skined blond. We will continue to mix because we are hard wired to do so and the dominent genes will move on down the future generations.
Why? Because we try find a partner that is as distantly related to us as possible. Many of us have a personal preference for what attracts us, but if instint does takes over, then white will be attracted to black just because the subcouscious thinks “well, I’m definitely not related to her so our children will be healthier.”
We know marrying your actual brother or sister can often cause biological problems – people have known that for centuries and it’s why there are laws against it. Therefore it makes sense that mixing your genes will make healthier children.
Mixed race children are an even more attractive prospect biologically. Why? Because their parents mixed their genes to produce that child. Now your children are going to have all of your partner’s healthy genes mixed in with yours which are also pretty distantly related and, if you’re from a different race to either of your partners’ parents then even better. A child of a black/white parent and a oriental/asian parent is a bioligical Superman.
Many of us will over-ride this urge and decide from an early age that we prefer those of our own colour, which is fine but, give us long enough as a species and the lines drawn between our ethniticity will be even more blurred.
Of course most of us will do something even more shocking when choosing our partner. Something which I honestly CAN’T believe has only been mentioned by one other person here.
They will fall in love with the person in front of them with absolutely no thought about what their ethnic background is. It’s even possible that some of these film and TV people might be doing that too. Has no-one else thought that they may have simply cast the best person for the job? No? Or is it not possible that the black or mixed raced actress could actually have been better suited to the role and had more talent than her white rivals? Is it not possible to entertain that hope – might there not be some white producer out there who has genuinely just seen a woman who can act well?
Or perhaps they should turn away the talented mix raced girl and give the job to the darker woman who’s quite a weak actress – just as they’ve been doing for decades with all those blonde girls? What good would that do the cause?
We are going in the right direction guys. As a child I hardly ever saw anyone on my TV that wasn’t white. Now I see a rapidly growing assortment from all sorts of interesting backgrounds. Ten years down the line there will be more, especially if you encourage your children to go to drama classes. Jump in a time machine and I think you’ll see that they’ll almost ALL be brown – including the producers themselves.

That’s ridiculous. The races evolved in isolation so it is NORMAL for a person to prefer someone who looks like him or herself. Most white people prefer white people and most black people prefer black people. Stop this nonsense about most people naturally preferring people who look nothing like themselves.
Humans are tribal and people of the same tribe look alike. It makes no sense that a person would instinctively want to form a close relationship with someone that looks nothing like him or herself. Instinctively, humans FEAR people who are very different, even if they are curious about those people. We as humans have to learn to trust and tolerate people who are very different; that is why racism and ethnocentrism are problems all over the world.
One does not need to mate with someone who is completely unrelated in order to have healthy children. If people did not mate with close relatives (cousins) our species would have died out a long time ago. Many scientists believe that the world outside of Africa was populated by a small group of people who left Africa. Clearly there had to be a lot of mixing with relatives in order for a small group of people to populate a few continents.
Stop finding excuses to justify interracial unions. I am for interracial relationships, but why do we have to pretend that there is something wrong with people preferring to mate with and marry someone of the same race?
