A guest post by commenter Mira:
John Christopher Depp II (1963-), or just Johnny Depp, is an American actor and musician, best known for his collaboration with director Tim Burton and for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. On this blog he was voted the third most gorgeous man in the world.
Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, but grew up in Miramar, Florida, near Miami. When he was 15, his parents divorced, and a year later he dropped out of high school to become a rock musician. He played guitar in several bands, but acting became his major occupation after he landed a role in the film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984).
Depp said in interviews that he is of Irish, German and Cherokee descent. But it is unclear how much Cherokee blood he actually has: some sources claim he has Cherokee ancestry on both sides of his family (but mostly from his mother’s), while others say it is only assumed. He also seems to have some African ancestry. On the other hand, in terms of both his image and the types of roles he gets he is seen as simply white.
He is known for his portrayals of eccentric characters, such as Edward Scissorhands, Ichabod Crane and Sweeney Todd. He got initial praise for his acting in the early 1990s, and soon established a long association with director Tim Burton. He seemed to enjoy playing dark, offbeat characters, which matched Burton’s style perfectly. But Depp’s true commercial success came in 2003, when he starred in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”, as the now-iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.
The success of “The Pirates of the Caribbean” series made Depp one of the most popular actors in the world. He appeared on several most attractive men lists: he was People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2009, and he was also on many most popular actors lists in the early 2000s. On the other hand, he was still praised for his acting: he won several major awards and was nominated for three Oscars.
He was married once, to makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, and engaged four times, to Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. But the love of his life is French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, whom he met while filming “The Ninth Gate” (1999). They have two children, Lily-Rose, born in 1999, and Jack John, born in 2002.
He says Vanessa and their children made him a better man:
I pretty much fell in love with Vanessa the moment I set eyes on her. As a person, I was pretty much a lost cause at that time in my life. She turned all that around for me with her incredible tenderness and understanding.
Anything I’ve done up till 27 May, 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. My daughter, the birth of my daughter, gave me life.
When he is not filming he lives in France with Vanessa and their children.

Johnny Depp is SO fine!! lol. Not just physically, but his personality and everything about him makes him very attractive for me.
Regarding his heritage, Johnny Depp’s grandparents on both sides of his family are Native American. Unlike most white actors who claim to have Native blond from some obscure generation (to seem more exotic) Johnny has more immediate Native blood, and is very active/supports NA organizations. You can tell he’s proud of it too; when he was a teenager he got a tattoo of an Indian chief on his arm. Also, like someone said, Johnny Depp actually looks Native.
Re: mochasister
Funny you should bring that up in regards to Holly Robinson Peete, in an old Vanity Fair interview from the mid 1990s, an interviewer asks why he seems to only date white women.
“All the women you’ve been serious about — Jennifer Grey, Sherilyn Fenn, Winona Ryder, now Kate — are quite white,” I tell Depp, who was married for less than a year, when he was 20 to a make-up artist, Lori Allison. “You pride yourself on being in touch not only with the ethnicity inside you but also with the ethnicity that enriches our culture. How do you explain this fixation on white women?”
“The ones that have been highly publicized are white, yeah. That just says more about the press than my tastes. I ain’t fucking ‘white,’ that’s for sure. Kate’s definitely not. She’s about the furthest thing from ‘white’ there is. She’s got that high water booty,” he brags. “A high-water booty is important…And feet. Feet are very important.”

Johnny said Kate has a high water booty? Interesting. I remember some of Kate’s Calvin Klein ads in the early 90’s when she posed nude and high water is not what I’d call her derriere.

I too think Depp is gorgeous, but it’s not just his bone structure, etc., it’s how he allows pain, vulnerability, and anger to show through in his acting and as a person. I guess he just seems “authentic.” As to his racial heritage, I think that’s also a strength of his. He can play pretty much anything. I would argue he doesn’t always “play white.” In “The Man Who Cried” (incredible movie with Christina Ricca) he plays a Roma (Gypsy) man. I would say the character of Jack Sparrow is not white either — probably Creole.

Sorry for being late here…
I had fun writing this (not to mention searching the photos 😉 .
As for African ancestry, it’s uncertain- but many claim he has some African ancestry. Here’s what most of the websites say:
“If you go back 9 generations on this family tree it will lead to a woman named Martha, born in 1612, who was an African American woman.
An interesting piece of trivia is that Martha’s daughter, Elizabeth Key was the first woman of African American ancestry to successfully take legal action to free herself from slavery. This happened in 1656.”
I didn’t include this in the article because it’s uncertain. Some say this info is not correct- that Martha mentioned here was, in fact, white (and legitimate wife of Key’s father). Others, however, say the article is correct (about Depp’s African ancestry), but that the ancestor’s name is wrong.
To be honest, I was surprised to learn Depp, of all people, is considered white in America. I know judging someone’s ethnic background based on physical appearance is never a smart thing to do, but he doesn’t look like a white man to me- and many Caucasians look completely white to me (Greeks, Italians, Spanish, many Middle Eastern people, Turkish, etc). So I always assumed Depp was mixed. He never denied that.
On the other hand, I don’t think he’s recognized by Cherokee community as one of their own. (To be honest, I don’t know how it goes- the administrative process I mean), and I do know some people who dislike the fact Depp is sometimes seen by audience as the “perfect” Native- while he’s certainly not fully, or even 1/2 Native American.
Still, I do believe he has Native ancestry more significant than your average white American who likes to claim “my great great great grandmother was an Indian princess”. He is more than 1/16 Native and judging by available info, he has more than one Native American ancestor.
As for playing “white” roles: I didn’t mean all of his characters were white people. What I meant is that Hollywood obviously treats him like a white actor: he is NOT restricted to playing “ethnic” roles- he can play all of variety of roles without anybody questioning whether to cast him would mean that movie becomes “ethnic”.
I don’t know about his choice of women, but I do believe he was honest about dating: I think I remember him dating a black girl. But media was more interested in his relationship with Winona and Kate Moss, I guess.
Still, what is true is that he’s obviously into skinny women and he never denied having a foot fetish.
On a more personal side, I am a fan. The first time I learned about him, I was 11 and it was an instant crush, I think. He’s one of the most gorgeous celebrities I’ve seen. And yes, his cheekbones are perfect (PERFECT!!!), but so are his eyes. And not to mention his hands.

As an actor, Depp is good (maybe even above average), but not perfect.
He is talented and versatile enough, but his acting is becoming more repetitive. It’s like he’s not trying that hard anymore. I understand he’s sick of publicity and the whole madness after “Pirates of the Caribbean”, but I’d love to see him in more serious roles. I’d love to see him inspired, working hard, giving his best.
He’s more than a pretty face, and he know it- he usually avoids roles of handsome men and womanizers. But as much as I love to watch his crazy, eccentric characters, I think he needs to take a role of a normal character. (Normal in a way that allows all of his talent to shine).
Honestly, I think he should take a break from collaborations with Burton. It’s getting a bit old and less and less inspiring. Burton should find a new muse, and Johnny should work with other directors.
His best movies (in my opinion):
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
Ed Wood
Dead Man
And a very special mention: Arizona Dream
Also, his directorial debut, “The Brave” is not that bad at all. I have no idea why everybody hated it.

Mira,
Cherokee is not the only Native American Nation.
There are many combinations of groups whose Native American, African, Spanish, Portuguese, Anglo and Irish Ancestry is hard to determine. These mixtures occurred during the very early settlement of this country. Some stayed isolated, especially in the Ozark and Appalachian mountains. Sometimes these people just melded into whichever phenotype they fit. The Melungeons are one example.

I know that. What I don’t know is whether Johnny’s other Native ancestor(s) were (eastern) Cherokee or not. That’s why I kept mentioning Cherokee (since we know he’s at least 1/16 Cherokee)- and most likely, when it comes to Native ancestry, he’s more Cherokee than anything else.
PS-Thanks for the info and the link!

I’m not sure what to say. Whenever there’s a talk about Johnny, people talk about him being mixed (and sexy because of it!) I did hear women claim he’s so attractive because he’s a perfect mix and because of his Cherokee ancestry. So I do think people (at least female people) think about it (about him being mixed).
But then again, culturally, he is white. He might support Native organizations and he might be interested in those issues, but he grew up as a white American. His image (“bad boy”, rock musician etc) type also helped.
All of it made producers see him as an “all American” guy and to treat him as a white actor- to give him universal (non-ethnic) roles. And “universal” here means: white. In fact, I believe he played Native American character only once in his career (and interestingly, some people were not happy about it). But the bottom line is, Depp is seen as white enough to play universal roles.
On the other hand, I don’t think it would be the case if he looked like Denzel Washington or Jackie Chan.

Also, I believe he’s not well-received in Native American communities.
He might be of a significant Native ancestry and proud of it, but he never openly talked about it. He never denied it, but he talked about it in a form of “interesting fact”, not something that defines him. He does have a few native-inspired tattoos, but so do many white men. He might support Native American associations and the movie he directed was about Natives, but I don’t think he ever declared himself a Native American (be it Cherokee or any other nation).
That’s why I don’t think Native Americans (Cherokee or any other) see him as “one of their own”. I believe they see him as white- so white, in fact, that some were offended by the fact he played a Native character in movie “The Brave”. They also seem to dislike the fact Depp is seen by many as a “model” for a Native American man. It’s not like I don’t understand them: Depp is no more than 1/16-1/8 Native, and culturally, he is white.

By the time Johnny started dating Kate Moss it was in the mid 1990s, so she gained a little bit of weight since the Calvin Klein ads. Obviously not by much, lol. But she did have some curves for someone her size.

Due to his features he can play several different ethnicities convincingly. He’s played Cuban (Before Night Falls) Italian
American (Donnie Brasco) Spaniard (Don Juan DeMarco) as well as Gypsy, Irish, British, so on and so forth.
Mira
Like you said, Johnny is from the south and was a musician. So he can be in films like Cry-Baby (campy Grease parody of redneck down south, confederate flags, etc) and The Brave (poor Native American Indian living in a trailer park with his wife and children) and still make sense in each one.
My favorite Johnny Depp movie is Arizona Dream, Edward Scissorhands, Secret Window, The Ninth Gate and Blow. I love the first two Pirates movies, but I consider Pirates of the Caribbean more of an ensemble cast instead of just a ‘Johnny Depp movie’, if that makes any sense. Donnie Brasco is another good film. Really there isn’t a film he’s been in I didn’t like, except Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

You have to keep in mind though that a large proportion, perhaps the majority, of Americans who are enrolled in tribes are about as white or whiter than Johnny Depp due to intermarriage over the years. You have to travel to Mexico or further south to find large numbers of people who are anywhere close to 100% Indian.

If his grandparent(s) are full blooded Cherokee than he is more than 1/16-1/8 Native, is he not? Also, white men who have Indian inspired tattoos obviously are getting them for the same reasons (which are most likely superficial) than someone like Johnny Depp, who wants to honor his roots. He once described his tattoos as a journal of his life (the name of his mother ‘Betty Sue’ in a heart on his arm, ‘Winona Forever’ when he was engaged to Winona Ryder, the name of his daughter Lily Rose on his heart, the name of his son Jack on his arm, etc).
Dean Cain, who’s father was half Japanese, has his birth last name Tanaka tattooed on his leg (his mother remarried) despite the fact that his dad left his family when he was young. Again, this is different from all tons of white people who get random Chinese or Japanese phrases on their body because it looks ‘cool’ lol. Also like Depp, Cain played Japanese American in a movie based on a real person/event. The name of the film escapes me now though, but it was around the mid 2000s.
You’re right, its not fair to have a person who’s probably no more than a quarter Native to represent ‘Native American’ people in the media. However in this case I think Johnny Depp is much more respectful about the box he is being put in. Like I said before, how many white actors like to chime in about their Amerindian roots but don’t even associate themselves with Amerindian people?

True. My mistake. He is AT LEAST 1/8 Native American (he is 1/8 Cherokee and he most likely has another Native American ancestor- who might not be Cherokee).
You’re right, its not fair to have a person who’s probably no more than a quarter Native to represent ‘Native American’ people in the media.
Well, I think Native nations should decide who is the right person to represent them. But for all I know, nobody really complained about his physical appearance- I think it’s more because he is seen as white and not fully recognized as “one of their own”. On the other hand, I did hear some complaints about Depp’s physical appearance, along the lines of “we don’t look like that”. While members of the Cherokee nation know best what they look like, I must admit I can’t see Johnny as simply white- he does look part Native American to me. I can’t help it. True, I never met a Native American, but I know many white (Caucasian) ethnicities, even those “dark” ones (Spanish, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern) and Johnny doesn’t look like any of those.

I get that. But the thing is, he is not enrolled (as far as I know). As far as I understand, he has the required blood quantum. I don’t know if there are any further requirements needed.
Still, I don’t know if he’s not seen as a Native by Natives because a) his physical appearance b) the fact he’s not enrolled or c) his culture.
But honestly, from what I can tell, it’s not that Native Americans deny he’s part Native. Their anger is more directed to the fact there are MORE Native American actors- some of which are fully Native or close to that, and everybody talks about Johnny Depp only.

It’s tribe by tribe, Mira, and the Cherokee are notoriously loose in this respect. If Johnny is 1/16th Cherokee and isn’t an enrolled tribal member, it’s because it’s not a big feal for him.

I don’t know if she is still considered Cherokee, because the ones in Oklahoma, disowned all the Black people who had been considered Cherokee last year. These were Blacks whose ancestors had married into the Cherokee nation or were descendants of slaves the Cherokee had owned.

But when I first discovered Depp he was relatively unknown. He was famous, but he wasn’t that popular and he wasn’t on every teenager’s “hottest guy to lose your virginity with” list.
He is charismatic, but there’s more. There’s something about his face (including, but not limited to cheekbones) that is simply captivating. Most probably, his eyes. When unsure about what makes a guy attractive, it’s always the eyes.
As an actor, Johnny is good, but not THAT good. He was better in his early days. Now he’s getting a bit tired. He should definitely take some time to rediscover acting again and stay away from blockbusters AND Tim Burton.

And he looks too much like Tom Cruise here (who I think is a gremlin :-P). I actually prefer men with some facial hair to clean-shaven, but JD is just not it for me. (Lol, do Natasha and I get kicked out of the club now?)

Also, your husband resembles Johnny Depp in some pictures? Where’d you find him??? LOL.
In a local library. No kiddin’!
Same. I like tall men, but the “dark and handsome” part is not really something I look for.
I think I go for dark first, tall second. I noticed I usually don’t like “conventionally handsome” men.

LOL Natasha, Jasmin.
A lot of people have said that about me whenever I become a fan of someone, or something. Its funny because I didn’t find JD all that attractive at first either. I forget what picture it was that changed my mind, but I think it was an old photo from the 1980s.
It may have been this one. I remember thinking…I’ve never seen cheekbones like that before.
Some pictures of JD with short hair and/or no facial hair that I like. I have no preference either way though.
Mira,
I think I may have to start hanging out at the library again. So I presume your husband is white/mixed?

Isn’t Johnny “conventionally handsome”?

I never considered him to be. In my opinion, conventionally handsome is someone like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise. Unconventionally handsome would be Johnny Depp or Christian Bale.

Isn’t Johnny “conventionally handsome”?
Yes, but he’s an exception to the rule. (Along with Blair Underwood).
I was very young when I first saw Johnny (I was 11 and he was in Belgrade promoting “Arizona Dream”). I think my puberty started that very moment. I mean, that was the first time I looked at a man and realized I liked him… in that way.
Ah, those days.
(Sorry for TMI)

Hey, I think Christian Bale is good-looking (most of the time)–I can’t put him in the same category as JD. 🙂
Tom Cruise is conventionally attractive? Really? I thought he and Brad were considered Hollywood “It” guys, but the hotties were supposed to be older and distinguished, like George Clooney. I’m never really sure who’s supposed to be hot–I find lots of not-as-famous actors attractive (like my new celebrity boo Chad Connell! :-)).

Wow, I just realized Johnny is almost 50! He doesn’t look that old at all. Well, that’s one good thing about him.

i dnt think johnny depp is attractive,……………the only time he looks almost handsome is in films, when he’s wearing make up…………or should i say fake up… his eyes are the only part of him that shines for me.

Johnny Depp is cute, but since 21 jump street was canceled and he adopted grungy styling, I always think he would look so much better if you gave him a good scrubbing. his wife, Vanessa seems like she could use one too. As does Kate Moss. Surely with all that money they could afford soap. I never thought about Depps lineage before, i would have guessed hungarian (whitish???) or a several generations ago dose of African or Native American.

Johnny Depp always had a ‘grungy’ style. Did you see the way he dressed in the 80s? lol.
LikeLike
on 21 jump street days, he may have been casually dressed, but his white shirts were actually white, not dingy. And in those days, he was more presentable. His real grunge style came about after that show.
There was another dark haired white actor on that show that if i remember right, was hotter, but i can’t remember his name anymore… and the guy who played the captain was hotter as well, as was the Asian guy, IMO Depp was the fourth hottest even on that show. He is just average if you ask me. Not BAD looking or ugly, just regular.

Sounds like you’re thinking of Richard Grieco, who came in the third season. The Asian guy was Dustin Nguyen. The captain, (I presume you mean the second one) was Steven Williams.
I have a little thing for Peter DeLuise (Penhall, the one with the heavy Italian accent lol) and Dustin Nguyen was hot when he grew his hair longer in the third season, but Depp was always the best looking one in my opinion. Greico was awful, he had a fake looking nose and perfect eyeliner eyebrows that drove me nuts lol. His character wasn’t like-able either.

LOL, Its like Deja vu.. I swear i had this exact discussion twentyfive yrs ago in school, on a fairly regular basis. I have to ask, are you peeling these names from your memory or google? Impressive if it is memory. Yeah it was Grieco… I think he was hot, but now that i googled, I see he did NOT age well. The eyeliner look was 90% genetic on him though, typical Irish skin hair contrast. I did not like Peter Deluise, with his mullet and stockiness he was the absolute physical epitome of a mean white frat boy to me. I got the vibe off him that as soon as the cameras turned off he would hop into his car with the no fat chicks bumper sticker and head off to date rape a random girl at the bar or slam a nerd boy’s face into a pool table . And then say ‘they were asking for it’ Like you, probably… NONE of my friends agreed with me on that.
Nguyen with his long hair was completely dreamy, And Williams’ eyes… There are not words. Depp was definately not the shining star of that show IMO.

I recently rewatched the 21 Jump Street series so their names are fresh in my mind lol. I didn’t even know the show existed until recently.
Your description of DeLuise/Penhall sounds like the first season. I didn’t like him in the beginning either. He becomes much more likeable and funnier later on. I love the McQuaid brothers, he had great chemistry with Johnny. And the mullet goes away eventually, lol. Its something you have to accept.
Did you ever notice that Holly Robinson wore green contacts in the first season?

She did? No i had not noticed that… Back the days of yore, before the invention of dust…when that was filmed, the idiot box had not really evolved to the huge, perfectly clear vision it is now. We had a 12 inch screen with a knob to turn the channel in those days. Eye color on actors was something you just imagined, But If i remember right, colored contacts had just come out… Baush and lomb probably paid her big money to wear them. Hopefully that is what it isanyway, i pray it was not some crazy producer idea to ‘caucasian her up’ I can imagine they looked pretty jarring on her though, they looked really fake for the first few yrs.
I just looked at the Depp photos on your blog, I noticed that pic of him in the homeland security T shirt a year or so ago and tbh, noticed the T right away, and embarrassingly, it did not even connect to me EVEN THEN that he was NA, I just thought it was a political statement (a good one i think, either way) seeing him in MANY different native political T shirts, it is pretty clear to me now he identifies in some manner with native culture. I guess that states pretty clearly who he is hereditarilly.
My memory is not super clear on the quality of the show, but It would be interesting to watch all those episodes again and see them from an adult perspective. I might have to pick up the Dvds myself.

They looked good on her in some scenes, but in others it just looked weird. Seems like she wore them in only a few episodes though. Colored eye contacts may have been popular for actresses to wear (regardless of race) since it was a new thing.
The show is very good. It can be cheesy at first, especially in its first season, but it becomes progressively better in quality after the first season. Johnny Depp even than, is extremely good (both comedic and dramatic).
You can watch the series on Hulu.

I don’t see anything bad about grungy styling. In fact, I prefer it to “clean, suit & tie” one. Vanessa looks ok to me, too skinny perhaps, but she’s ok. I am no Kate Moss fan and I don’t udnerstand why she’s considered to be one of the hottest women in the world (or at least, why she was considered as such).
PS-I never watched 21 Jump Street…

White people hate to admit that there is a possiblity that they might have some Black blood in them. I guess that explain why most do not want to take a DNA test and track their roots. It is a possiblity that Johnn Depp might have some black roots though. I bet if he did a DNA test, I bet he might have African blood in him more then you think. If he’s Cherokee, then it is a possiblity he may have black blood in him. After all, all Native American mixed with black slaves. They even had them as slaves too.

I followed the link on floacist (cool blog, btw) and saw the picture of Johnny Depp’s father on it, he pretty clearly has some black roots. and if I do say so myself, Papa Depp is FAR better looking than his progeny (sorry Mira… but at least i have taken myself outa the running…all the more for you) . I read a long time ago, that most Irish people in Ireland, when given genetic tests have clear african ancestry, and Ireland has remained homogenous for centuries, since the vikings and brits did thier damage… long enough to not show physical characteristics any longer, save for a good number of very coarse haired people, I can only imagine how many American whites would have even more modern links. A very healthy majority of the descendents of european immigrant groups who arrived between 1 and 3 hundred yrs ago would have a good deal of shared DNA, i would bet. It would be funny if they were informed of this. 🙂
