Here are the world’s most beautiful East Asian women that I know of. As you will soon be able to tell, I live in America and know next to nothing about film or music in East Asia. I count only women who are famous enough to have an article in the Wikipedia and who are at least part East Asian by blood (but not part black). I count South East Asia as part of East Asia.
1. Patricia Ford (1969- ) was an American swimsuit model from Hawaii. Back in 1995 her pictures were on the Internet like free dollar bills. The pictures from her calendar back then were amazing: I could look at them forever. She is a mix of German, Irish, Portuguese, Chinese and Hawaiian. More.
2. Nicole Scherzinger (1978- ) is an American singer, also from Hawaii. She is best known as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Her father is Filipino, her mother is part Hawaiian and part Russian. Whatever she is, she is beautiful!
3. Pia Reyes (1964- ) is a model from Manila in the Philippines. She was the Playboy Playmate of the Month for November 1988.
4. Tia Carrere (1967- ) is an American actress, also from Hawaii. She was Cassandra in the Wayne’s World films of the 1990s. She is full Filipino by blood.
5. Sung-Hi Lee (1970- ) is an American model, best known for appearing in Playboy. She was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to America when she was eight.
6. Ann Curry (1956- ) is an American news presenter. I used to see her on the morning news on NBC and hear only half of what she said because she was so beautiful. She was born in Guam to a white father (who is part Cherokee) and a Japanese mother. I thought she was ten years younger than she is.
7. Faye Wong (1969- ) is a singer from Hong Kong. She has sold over 97 million records, making her the best-selling female singer of Cantonese pop music. In Japan she is called the Diva of Asia. I am not a fan but I keep running across her pictures on the Internet being struck by her beauty.
8. Nancy Kwan (1939- ) is an American actress from the 1960s. I know her from the Hollywood film, “The World of Suzy Wong” (1960). She was born in Hong Kong. She is half Cantonese and half Scottish.
9. Vanessa Mae (1978- ) is a British violin player. She was born in Singapore to a Thai father and a Chinese mother.
10. Sonia Couling (1974- ) is a Thai model and actress from Bangkok. Her father is English, her mother Thai. I only know about her from seeing her on someone else’s list of beautiful women!
Honourable mentions: Lisa Ling, Vanessa Hudgens.
No, I did not forget Lucy Liu. She looks kind of mean or something.
I love black hair and high cheekbones and East Asian eyes are often pretty, but I do not go for paleness and thinness in women.
Women from the Philippines, Thailand and southern China are better looking to me than women farther north.

Nicole Scherizinger (sp.) isn’t pretty at to me. But otherwise, these are some nice looking women. Yet, I think the presence of so many Eurasian women kinda contradicts what you’ve said in the past. You’ve taken white publications to task for not picking enough “real black women” and for only liking the “whitness” in women of color who have Euro ancestry. Are you doing anything different with this list?
Also, why do women have to be in categories and “flavors”, why can’t pretty women just be pretty women?

A lot of actresses and models that crossover into the west are often Eurasian. They are popular of course in Asia and they are familiar enough physically for White Europeans. You really have to pay attention to Asian cinema to see a better cross section of diversity. Side note Thailand is considered part of Southeast Asians groups i.e., Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand are usually separated from East Asians that include China, Korea, and Japan.
Some East Asians who are considered quite attractive in parts of Asia include
Gongi Li http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gong_Li she is considered the Meryl Streep of China
Tang Wei http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gong_Li
Shu Qi http://www.shu-qi.com/popup.htm
Those are just a couple.
It’s not hard to find a list of East Asian women since they are the easiest group to eroticize and fetish.

Why have an East Asian list? I started out with a list of just beautiful women – of any race. Then I wanted one of black women. And then in fairness I made one of white women. And then people asked me what about Asian women, etc.

Why so many Eurasians: Half of the women on this list are part white, what is that about? I think that is because I live in America. I have little doubt there are tons of pure Asian women who are better looking than these but I do not know who they are.

I’m biased towards the full Filipino or part-Filipino actresses as I’m also Filipino…hehe. Regarding Lucy Liu, I’m always puzzled as to why she’s even considered pretty. It’s as if she’s considered pretty by default since she’s one of the few Asian-American actresses who’s fairly known in the US. However, if you talk to people in many parts of Asia, they will strongly disagree with you. The East Asian beauties that are very popular right now are Song Hye Gyo, Lee Hyori (S.Korea), and Liu Yi Fei (China).
Song Hye Gyo

As mayhue mentioned earlier, Thailand and the rest of the Southeast Asians are separated from East Asians. Btw, there is also some sort of hierarchy among Asians as well…the East Asians on top while the Southeast Asians are lower.

i think abagond ha made it pretty clear that he likes dark skin, meaty women. So it makes sense that he would think southeast Asians are more attractive than east Asians.
i don’t like to put one group as being more attractive than the other because that kind of attitude i stupid. beauty is beauty and women are women. Also, I’m not looking at these women in a sexual way, as perhaps a straight male would, but if I were looking at them in that way I would go for the thicker, darker women as well. To me thicker=more voluptuous=more womanly. and I just think dark skin is beautiful, probably because i have dark skin myself.
Really though, beauty is so incredibly subjective that these things don’t even matter.

I agree that there is a hierarchy from what I can see as an outsider. I live around a very large Cambodian population with Vietnamese and Laotians sprinkled throughout and East Asians in that area(they were often highly educated, somtimes very well off)do look down on some Southeast Asians. Blackbodians were used as a slur against Cambodians even though they were not mixed with Black. In addition, Southeast Asians contend with problems of lower educational attainment, gang violence, and poverty that are supposed to be the sole province of Blacks and which may darken the Model Minority image that some East Asians see as that protects them from being seen in the same light as Blacks.
Zhang Ziyi is way overrated. She cannot act worth a damn and there are a lot of Actresses that outpace her by miles working in Asian cinema. I also agree about Lucy Liu—she is not pretty at all and she got where she was by exploiting the Dragon lady and Asian sex kitten stereotypes.

There is alot of pressure on all races to look more white, as the mixed ones tend to get the majority of media attention.
There was an unbelievable article in the DAILY MAIL (UK) a few days ago where a Black single mother going to university with children went to Panama to get an unsafe surgical procedure to turn her brown eyes permanently blue. She wasted thousands of pounds only to almost go blind in the process.
All of the comments posted mainly spoke about how reckless, vain and irresponsible she was( she also had a long black weave, breast implants, etc)
It’s obvious to me that she obviously felt that pressure to look more white. So while she was obviously low income( being a single mother in uni) she was willing to spend the money not on her kids/charity but on herself to conform to societies ideal. Very sad Asian girls go through this as well

@leigh204 – I think it is so fitting to see your picture for the first time on a post titled “The most beautiful East Asian women”
@Abagond – I was about to suggest that you could look up Asian beauty pageants – god knows there are way too many of those – but then I thought, they do tend to try to fit to a “white” ideal and a slim supermodel type one at that so I don’t think you’ll find beauty pageant type women to be to your “dark + thick” women preference.
However, I do have to add that your list seems to consist of mostly Eurasians who really are beautiful but there are also Asian women of no European ancestry who are just as gorgeous with or without dark skin + curviness. I believe this is partially due to the lack of Asian representation in Western media. Western cultures are only fed the pale+slim+androgynous shaped Asian female (and male for that matter) when East Asians come in ALL shades (ok, maybe not palest pale and darkest dark, but most shades in between lol) and sizes.
You should check out Racialicious – there’s been a few discussions on East Asian topics lately.

That makes sense, unfortunately – unfortunately for those of us in the West who are fed just one kind of whitened Asian beauty.

Being Filipino, I know all too well about many, though not all, East Asians looking down on Southeast Asians. One time, in elementary school, I was invited by a Chinese friend to play at her house. She was one of the few Asians around in a predominantly white neighborhood. Well, her parents took one look at me, and yelled at my friend, and kicked me out of their house!
And then the next day, my Chinese friend’s father forbade her to play with me. I was so sad. I didn’t know what I did wrong until I realized I wasn’t the “right” person according to their culture.
Where I come from, I’ve heard time and time again that Filipinos as well as Cambodians and Thais are thought of as the black people of Asia. We’re looked down upon as dirty, dark, and inferior. That’s really effed up!

That is a horrible experience! But unfortunately it jibes with some of the things that I see and the slurs—the strong demarcation of East Asian and Southeast Asian. I am sure it’s different on the West Coast since stats tend to show more intra-marriages among Asians groups—especially Pinays and Pinoys, but on the East coast it’s a lot different. It would help if Blacks could see similarities with South East Asians, but the Model Minroity meme tends to block that area.
I will say that form a personal perspective the warmest Asians that I have ever met have usually been Filipinas. I don’t know whether it’s because Pilipino culture tends to be more matriarchal but I have never felt less than or seen as dirty and inferior as a Black women when I dealt with Filipinas compared to East Asians. Very eye opening.

I admit to being very ambivalent to East Asians due to personal experiences and some histories, even though I follow Asian cinema and read some Asian history and sociological writings, but some groups are easier to approach and relate as a POC than others and that usually includes Filipinos and Pacific Islanders like the Samoans, the Tongas, etc. The Asian/Black dialogue is not there simply because our histories and experiences with the dominant culture are different; however it is always a positive to meet someone like yourself who is very understanding and receptive to dialogue. I truly value your input and appreciate your perspective. Take Care.

I’m coming very late to this thread, but one thing that stared me straight in the face (and what some other commenters have hinted at) is how you have in many ways embraced a Eurocentric standard of beauty here.
Given how you have previously championed the beauty of the kind of black women who don’t fit the typical Western standard of beauty, I found it strange that your list of beautiful East Asian women was almost completely Eurasian.
I’m not going to argue against the beauty of Eurasians, given that I am one myself. And I can’t say these women aren’t beautiful. But your list seems to reflect the sort of Westernised lens that I suspect you would rail against if it were about black women.
I’m not trying to having a pot shot at you, because you admit that you have a US-centred perspective on this, and I respect that you always strive to be intellectually honest.
But this is the second post I’ve noticed where your take on East Asian beauty seemed a little, well, ignorant. (The other was about black and Asian women on TV.) I think that is perhaps something you should think about.
(That said, I dig your appreciation for SE Asian women. In Asia, their darker skin and facial features are seen as undesirable, but that’s crazy.)

I guess what I was trying to get at was that a post titled “The most beautiful East Asian women” that includes mostly those who are half-Western, is a bit odd.
I guess a parallel would be a post called “The most beautiful African women” that included mostly people like Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Rashida Jones and the like; it would in once sense be implying that to be truly beautiful they have to have some white in them.
Obviously then we are getting into a murky question of how you define an Asian and whatever. And of course, the women you listed are East Asian. But yeah, if you look at it from a certain perspective it sends a mixed message about Asian beauty.

Personally, I have found darker skin more attractive. It looks healthier to me. I always thought it was so cool how my skin darkened in the summer and I get this nice tan. I love it!

Sheesh, those Asians are utterly insane (no offense). There is absolutely nothing wrong with the darker skin of some SE Asians. Re: pale skin preference…
This is found all over Asia, especially in South Asia, where it has links to caste and ethnicity.
In East and SE Asia, it is primarily linked to social class. A dark-skinned person is seen as low-class, because they must have to work out in the sun. Someone of a more noble class can stay inside and preserve their light complexion.
There is a secondary element to it, in that people in the richer East Asian countries do tend to see themselves as better than the SE Asians, who they consider less refined and more primitive. So similarly to in the West, darker skin can be associated with “wildness” and a less civilised nature.

Hmm. Good question. I have heard of images applied to Thai people generally the women as working in prostitution/sex trade, and becoming mail-order brides. I also have heard the same thing said of Filipino women. Mind you, these women are almost always from the rural parts of the country and have no education. What else are they supposed to do?

Stereotypes I find the most harming are those who are 2% true. Those who are completely made up are harmless. But if you take something that is true in some low percentage of the cases, and made it look like 100% true (in all of the cases)- those are the harmful ones. So, if there are some poor women in SE Asia or anywhere in the world who choose to become mail order brides, there are so many others who don’t. But people (westerners) don’t pay any attention on those “others” who are majority!
In case of America: everybody out there is a redneck. Those people have sex with their cousins, can’t read properly, are smelly, ugly and uneducated.

I mean, I don’t think all Americans are like that. I was just trying to give an example of a harmful stereotype of this kind.

I agree with Mira. These stereotypes are harmful and are only true for a few not the majority. It is disgusting, unfair, and wrong to assume a woman is a prostitute or willing to be a mail order bride just because she is of a certain ethnicity. My boyfriends mother who is Thai is a classy very diginified lady. She told me when she first came to America she believe because her English was not that great she was discriminated against and looked down on by Americans. She said she related more to blacks because they treated her better and shes had to deal with racism too. She later became a US citizen, owned a downtown restarant in which was shut down by the white building owners to be turned into a parking lot. She then became a RN nurse now retired. She do not look like any of the Asian women on TV. I’ve seen younger pics of her in her twenties she was gorgeous and had an hourglass shape too.

I also concur with you and Mira that the stereotypes are only true for a few. For example, I’ve mentioned several times on Abagond’s blog that I’m a Canadian of Filipino descent. However, I’ve lost count the times I’ve been asked if I’m a domestic helper. And not to mention, there have been men who’ve approached me and done the whole “Me rove rong time” routine thinking I’m some easy piece of tail. It’s creepy and disgusting.

4 out of 10 of these women are East Asian. The majority are Eurasians/Amerasians. They do not belong to one race, but are a hybrid of two. They are as much white as they are Asian and therefore you simply cannot deem them East Asian.
I find it quite sad that the women you’ve picked to represent the women of East Asia are mostly part white. Young East Asian women already have enough of a hard time with the influence of mixed Asians in their media; it’s almost as if their media industry refuses to use their own people.
As an Eurasian woman myself, I also find the ignorance slightly offensive. This kind of attitude only further instils in impressionable, young Asian girls that they have to be part white to be considered beautiful. If the title of this post had been ‘the most beautiful Eurasian/Amerasian women’, we’d have a slightly different story. But grouping these women under ‘East Asian’ and then deeming them the most beautiful whilst they are actually as white as they are Asian doesn’t really give a great boost to REAL Asian women’s self-esteem and identity.
There is already an on-going problem with Westernisation in Asian media, hence why there is such a massive plastic surgery business out there. I visited a forum just the other day and the question that was asked was literally: “Would you rather look Eurasian or Asian?”. The majority (70%) of users said they wanted to look half white, instead of appreciating their own beauty. Posts and attitudes like these do not help.
Eurasians should not and do not represent East Asia. They are not East Asian women and should not be considered as such.
One thing I do agree with is that South East Asia is no different from East Asia. Why the need for people to separate them, I have no idea!

@Joe Clyde:
With all due respect, her looks are dime a dozen if she were in Asia. Anyway, she is American of Chinese descent. Hollywood wouldn’t know about really pretty Asian girls if they were bit on the butt. Sure, looks are subjective. However, I’m not convinced that Lucy Liu is gorgeous compared to this Asian woman.

I think “sexy, but not pretty/special” is accurate. At least that’s how I see her. Now, I can’t really judge what men find sexy in women, but I’d say she’s reasonably attractive. But that’s all. Still, I don’t think she should be praised as the most beautiful Asian woman.

I think it’s all about (silly) whites not being exposed to more non-white people, I think. And white ideals of beauty. (That work more on Halle than Lucy, I think… I don’t think Lucy is particularly “European” looking). I think she was just lucky to be chosen for the roles in mainstream movies and TV shows (she played tokens, right?) Nothing horribly wrong about it, and like I said, the girl is not ugly, but there are many better looking Asian women, and better actresses (not that she’s untalented, but I still have to watch her in a serious movie to see about her acting talent).
And, if I may to add, Asian men- especially good looking ones- have less chance of appearing in mainstream movies and shows for some reason.
LikeLike
I guess the attention Lucy Liu gets is because prior to her, there were very few Asian women featured in a prominent role on mainstream TV. And I doubt there were any who played the confident vixen-type role that Liu became known for. So perhaps she lingers in people’s minds because she was a trailblazer of sorts for Asian female sex appeal in mainstream entertainment.

Actually, I don’t buy the “quite sexy language” narrative. I mean, maybe, but it’s all subjective. Personally, I don’t find French or Portuguese sexy at all. Spanish is ok to me, and so is Italian. HALF OF THE PEOPLE ON YOUR LIST ARE NOT EVEN ASIAN! THEY ARE EURASIANS, HALF WHITE, HALF ASIAN AND THEREFORE TO CALL THEM ‘ASIAN’ IS TO CALL THEM ‘WHITE’! I cannot believe you have actually added more, though I do agree on the Lucy Liu comment … she does look kinda mean.
In any case, it is disparaging and insulting to Asian women, and only proves one thing in their minds: that they can only be attractive with European heritage, something that their media constantly shoves in their faces already. Asian women do not have direct European heritage. Asian women do not have a White parent. That completely disqualifies a person from being Asian. Ask any Asian person in ASIA and nobody considers an Eurasian Asian. They consider them what they are – mixed individuals of dual heritage. If you want to pick beautiful women to represent East Asia, you have mostly failed in doing so.
Calling Nicole Scherzinger ‘Asian’ is like calling her ‘Black’ or ‘White’. She is none of those things alone, but all three. Calling Vanessa Hudgens ‘Asian’ is like calling her ‘White’. It would be exactly the same as me listing VH on my list of ‘Beautiful White Women’!
Why don’t you do everyone a favour, actually immerse yourself into the Asian media and find ASIANS for your list, instead of people who are just as European as they are Asian!

“East Asian” includes people who are of Southeast Asian origin, or part Caucasian, but not part black (which I assume, according to Abagond, should be classified as black.)
I guess this is consistent with an American definition of East Asian people.
But, it may indeed make Southeast Asians or Eurasians uncomfortable to be labelled as representing East Asians, and not the other things that they are.

To a degree, I think light-skinned Asians are quite attractive. But that does not mean that Asians with a healthy, beautiful tan aren’t attractive, either. To me, I just don’t find how extremely pale that some Japanese folks’ skin tones as being attractive at all. Some of them are so pale that they either look like albinos and/or dressed up in full make-up as a geisha, which to me looks no different than the same make-up that are worn by circus clowns. As for those with medium-light to even a slightly darker, olive complexion that are often found among Thais, Vietnamese and some Filipinos (not the Filipinos that are way too dark who look like Samoans), I find them to be the most attractive among East and Southeast Asians.
