Remarks:
I know this is not a particularly deep song, not one for the ages, but I like it all the same.
At first I thought this was one of those songs that seem to be about a car but is in fact about a woman through its double meanings. Then I thought, no, it is just about his car. But just to make sure I looked it up in the Urban Dictionary and found out that I was right the first time.
You can see Paul Wall towards the end of the video. He appeared in this space with his own song of cars and women, “Break ‘Em Off” (2007). He is from Houston while Dorrough is from Dallas.

Wow, you like this song? LOL.
I admit, it’s slight catchy.
The problem with modern mainstream rap music is that it’s so disposable. What was hot just four months ago is passe now. In a couple months, this song will be old news.
In 2005, Houston boy Mike Jones was all the rage. Where is he now? What about other H-Towners like the (actually talented and intelligent) Chamillionaire? Paul Wall? Slim Thug? They all fell out the pop audience’s favor soon after their ascendance.

You thought Chamillionaire was talented? I’m all for conscious rap, but he was off base when considering reputable music.
I am a part of hip hop’s target audience, but Cham didn’t thrive for a reason.

What is hip hop’s target audience?

Hip hop to me is the greatest genre of music ever.
But today’s hip hop is rubbish.
It’s all about Golden Age Hip hop (1985-1997.)
Abagond, you should write a blog about it.
Give me Brand Nubian or D.I.T.C over Paul Wall and Slim Thug anytime.

Since we are streaming to this topic, I am in constant debate as to what album is the greatest of all time.
I have it down to two:
1. Nas – Illmatic
2. Wu Tang Clan – Enter the 36 Chambers
Both are insane from front to back. I think the Nas Album gets the nudge.
Any sayers?

Nas, but I am no hip hop fan.

Nas – Illmatic = Just pure genius.
I feel kinda of sorry for Nas. All his post-Illmatic albums get compared to Illmatic.

I have been thinking about that Illmatic album and how amazing that such a work came from one man inside a project building in Queens. Just that moment in time, when Hip Hop was not yet the mainstream cash prize it is now.
Also, the fact that Premier produced it and laid down such unreal tracks.
He tried some new directions after Illmatic and didn’t hit all, but his Stillmatic is pretty nice.
His get back at Jay Z is classic.
My call is that KRS-One is the greatest Hip Hop Artist of all time, but the Illmatic is the greatest album of all time.

I am so surprised to see Ice Cream Paint Job featured on your site. I would have never taken you for a southern rap fan 😉
mynameismyname: Mike Jones is still making music and respected in the game. He has a new song out now and another one ft. Ashanti that’s good too.

I am not a fan of southern rap or even rap, but every now and then there is a song that I like. The same goes for rock.

CS2M,
Mike Jones, Slim, Paul Wall and Cham still actively record and release music. It’s just that they’re no longer “the flavor of the month”. That’s all due to the disposability of mainstream rap. I mean 50 Cent was “Godzilla”-like in terms of sales and popularity a mere 6 years ago. Now, he can’t even give an album away (hence way it keeps getting pushed back).
Aba,
How come rap music doesn’t appeal to you? Do you prefer more musciality in your stuff? The lyrics too harsh? Or is it because hip hop turned to pure crap after the ’90s?

hip hop these days are mostly the same and haven’t changed for the better. every rapper is trying to be every other rapper instead of being themselves. but i will say there are some good rappers that’s holding it down but don’t get the recognition that they deserve. to me the only rapper i listen to is kanye west because i think he’s one of the best rappers that’s out there and doesn’t have or need a thug image to be popular. as cocky and arrogant he is, he has talent unlike other rappers who “think” they have talent but sound like garbage. as for 50 cent, the man sucks!! the fact he tried to go off against kanye was a bad move because kanye destroyed his ass when it came to the “graduation” album and the only reason why 50 cent was so huge because he basically came off as a bully and had that thug image. now people hardly care for his wack ass.

From my point of view rap went downhill with the rise of gangsta rap in the middle 1990s. But then that is just when I got married and I have noticed that other people’s musical tastes tend not to change much once they get married, so it is fair to assume the same applies to me.
Some rap artists I like: Kanye West, Common, the Fugees, Lauryn Hill (big time), Salt-n-Pepa, Public Enemy, Black Sheep, the Real Roxanne, Doug E Fresh, 2 Live Crew (yes, I know), Boogie Boys, LL Cool J, Oaktown 3.5.7, Biz Markie, Whodini, KRS-One, MC Lyte, Eve.
Rap artists who sometimes have good stuff: Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg (grudgingly), Twista, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Nas, Lil’ Kim, Fabolous, Trina, A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Leaders of the New School, TLC, Biggie Smalls, Yo Yo, Foxy Brown.
Some rap artists I do not like: Lil Wayne (big time), 50 Cent, Eminem, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Ice T, Vanilla Ice, Soulja Boy, Hurricane Chris, Queen Latifah, Da Brat.
There are tons I am forgetting, but that should give you an idea.

LOL, your taste in rap is pretty “old school”. But I don’t blame ya, that stuff is classic.
I tend to favor rap music from the years of 1992-1998.
Kanye West is garbage. I always thought he was a terrible producer since he first emerged on the scene back in 1999. I notice that when people praise a mainstream pop artist, they always point to THEIR PUBLIC IMAGE, not their MUSIC. (See the Alicia Keys and Beyonce posts; same phenonmeon).
I don’t care what an artist looks like, what they’re like as people, when I play your music, I should only be hypnotized by the groove. No?

Agreed – about the music being more important than the public image. Not about Kanye West being garbage: I liked “Jesus Walks”, “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” and “Gold Digger”, but nothing since 2005.

…Maybe you like older music because it’s much, much better?
Not too much good stuff in hip hop, in either the underground or mainstream. There’s some decent stuff from vets (Ghostface/Raekwon, UGK) or midstream guys (think the Slaughterhouse supergroup) but it’s just that…decent.
