Remarks:
Thank God for “Soul Train”! Not only did they have all these great acts perform, they are still embeddable from YouTube.
The first number one hit of the Jackson 5 and still good 40 years later!
You might know the beginning of this song from another artist who sampled it. His name escapes me right now.
Lyrics:
When I had you to myself
I didnt want you around
Those pretty faces always made you
Stand out in a crowd
Then someone picked you from the bunch
One glance was all it took
Now its much too late for me
To take second look
(chorus)
Oh baby give me one more chance
To show you that I love you
Wont you please send me back in your heart
Oh darlin I was blind to let you go
But now since I see you in his arms
I want you back
Yes I do now
I want you back
Oo oo baby
Yeah yeah….naw….
Trying to live without your love
Is one long sleepless night
Let me show you girl
That I know wrong from right
Every street you walk on
I leave tear stains on the ground
Following the girl
I didnt even want around
(chorus)
Abuh buh buh buh
All I want!
Abuh buh buh buh
All I need!
Abuh buh buh buh…..
True that we all want you back, Mike!

“I Want You Back” has been sampled quite a few times so you’d have to be specific. Lil’ Romeo, perhaps?
This song is a classic, of course, but like the rest of the early J5 hits (“ABC”, “The Love You Save”, “I’ll Be There”, “Goin’ Back To Indiana”, etc.) and MJ’s star-making solo cuts (“Rock With You”, all of the singles from “Thriller”, etc.), it’s been played to the ground so much over the decades that I can’t stand to listen to it. Does that make sense?
My favorite J5/Jacksons songs are the ones that are less well known: “To Know”, “My Little Baby”, “Maybe Tomorrow”, “Looking Through The Windows”, “I Am Love”, “Hum Along and Dance”, “All I Do Is Think Of You”, “Show You The Way To Go”, “Blues Away”, “Different Kind of Lady”, “That’s What You Get For Being Polite”, “Bless His Soul”, the entire Triumph album, etc.
solo MJ: all four of his solo albums for Motown; “I Can’t Help It”, “Working Day and Night”, “The Lady In My Life”, the first half of his Dangerous album, “Stranger in Moscow”, “Break of Dawn”, etc.
Also can’t sleep on his background performances on Kenny Loggins’ “Who’s Right Who’s Wrong”, Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do” and Quincy Jones’ “The Dude”.
So much classic music!!!
