Here are the top songs on the R&B charts now, 10 years ago today , 20 years ago, etc. Through the wonder that still is YouTube, you can hear them all (Can you believe it has already been ten years since “No Scrubs”?):
2009: Jamie Foxx and T-Pain: Blame It
1999: TLC: No Scrubs
1989: Jody Watley: Real Love
1979: Peaches & Herb: Reunited
1969: The Isley Brothers: It’s Your Thing
1959: Brook Benton: It’s Just a Matter of Time
1949: Big Jay McNeeley’s Blue Jays: The Deacon’s Hop
Curiously, the hardest year was not 1949 but 1989! The top song on May 3rd 1989 was Karyn White’s “Love Saw It”. I could not even find a bad audio of a live performance for that one, so I went for Jody Watley’s “Real Love” which did not become number one till May 6th. But even with that one there was no embeddable music video for the radio version of the song.

The evolution of chart R&B! From “The Deacon’s Hop” to “Blame It On The Alcohol”.
Yes, time does go by very fast. Too fast for me, sometimes. I remember when “No Scrubs” first came out, before it was even on the charts. That that was 10 years ago is insane.
I wonder, am I out of touch if I can admit that I’m much more into R&B from the 1970s and 1980s than the 2000s?

Maybe that is because the older stuff is better….

Coincidentally, I saw No Scrubs on the TV just a few days ago and I was like, ’10 years already!’. I remember buying it as soon as, back in ’99.
I prefer RnB from the ’70s and ’80s also, but I wouldn’t really call todays music RnB, it’s more pop meets RnB, basically it’s terrible.

I can’t believe it’s been ten whole years since No Scrubs either. I can remember singing loudly and pointing at all the boys at the fourth grade dance. Where has the time gone?
mynameismyname, if you’re out of touch so am I. Last month I had to come to terms with the fact that I’m not an R&B fan anymore. Rather, I’m not a fan of what’s called R&B these days. I retreat into my neo-soul and 70’s-90’s R&B corner.
I cringe when I think that my peers will be telling their kids “Oh! Blame It On The Alcohol was my jam back in the day!”

And on a another note, why in creation is Ron “Opie” Howard in that video? The little wisps of hair he has left on top of his head flailing in the wind when he gets out of the car make me laugh til I cry.

I know. And why make it like it is some kind of Hollywood film when it is only a song about getting a girl drunk to take advantage of her!? Do Ron Howard, Forest Whitaker and Quncy Jones all approve of that sort of thing?

It makes me feel better to know I am not the only one who thinks the last ten years went by so quick!

NO Scrubs: I HATED that song with an unbridled passion that burned deeply within my soul…but after hearing blame it on the alcohol. I think I hate that song even more than that.
