I am shocked, simply shocked that in these post-racial United States where 44% of the white people voted for a black man that blacks with university degrees would still be almost twice as likely to be out of work than whites with the same education. How ever can this be!!?
More at the Economic Policy Institute (I found out about it at The Root at the Washington Post).
Yes, my shock is sarcastic shock.

Wow, all college educated non-whites are more likely to be unemployed than college-educated whites. Yet, sadly and unsurprisingly, blacks fare the worst.

It’s more evidence of a kind of affirmative action that white folks never seem to be against. That is, the continuation of 400+ years of (de facto) Affirmative Action for Whites.

Abagond,
Here’s information from the source:
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/forbrn.t03.htm
On average for 2008 (I didn’t find the date for 2009 yet..) the labor participation rate for blacks with college degrees both foreign born 86.0 and native born 80.4 was higher than for whites (foreign 73.7) (native 77.3). Granted the white population is on average older. I’d like to see figures for age groups 25 to 65.
The labor participation rate for (native born..)(35.4) blacks and (36.9) whites without high school diplomas was almost identical. The labor participation rate for foreign born workers without high school diplomas for (55.6) blacks was dramatically higher than for foreign born (34.1) whites.

And when you disaggregate the statistics by sex, you find that the unemployment rate for white men is 50% higher than for white women! And the unemployment rate for black men is 50% higher than for black women!
There is rampant anti-male discrimination in the workplace!
THERE IS NO OTHER POSSIBLE EXPLANATION!!!!!!

Actually, there are some studies that suggest that black and East Asian women, on average, make more money than white women.
Strangely enough, the mainstream media didn’t rush to report or analyze those stats. Wonder why? 😉

Statistics are always fun…
“There is rampant anti-male discrimination in the workplace!”
It’s because of the types of jobs women versus men do. And because more women than men are college graduates (in the younger generation). The unemployment rate for men that do “traditional female jobs” such as teaching, nursing, etc. is the same as for women. It’s the high rate of men in careers in construction, industrial production, farming, etc., that drives up the statistics.
“Actually, there are some studies that suggest that black and East Asian women, on average, make more money than white women.” We benefit doubly from affirmative action (as a two-for-one special, LOL!) and we’re less likely to take a baby-break in our career. We also work longer hours (overtime pay), on average.
I haven’t found a non-racial reason why black men fare so badly. Although they are less likely to be married, which depresses their incomes (yes, having a wife makes you much wealthier). It would be interesting to parse those statistics for marital status. But there certainly is bias against blacks(it’s been proven in many peer-reviewed studies), especially those with black-sounding names like Terrence, Jamal, Princess, or Tasha who get weeded out before the interview process even starts.
I’ve read some of the studies and, if I remember correctly, once you get to the interview stage blacks fare almost equally well, which I find fascinating. I wonder what the reason for that is? Is it that employers only discriminate against blacks (and other minorities) as a group, but not individually? Maybe they react like Joe Biden and are so pleased to find a “articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking” one that they hire them on the spot. LOL!

That is interesting but depressing. I AM slightly surprised by black unemployment being significantly higher than employment among other PoC.

Hmmm…
1. The banking industry is very male-dominated, and has seen a lot of layoffs recently.
2. Ditto the construction industry.
3. Ditto car manufacturing.
4. In a 2002 study, two sociology professors at Wichita State University, Charles S. Koeber and David W. Wright, found that women who were laid off and went on to look for another job were re-employed less often than men in the same position.

What?
As far as I know, there is no education board that mandates universal final exams for all university students.
Are you suggesting that the final exams at Princeton are the same, or even equivalent to the final exams for University of Phoenix Online? Do you think that a University of Michigan Sociology major takes the same finals as a University of Michigan Electrical Engineering major?
All of these students receive “a college degree”, but they absolutely do not “all have to take the same final exams”. And their education is absolutely not equally valuable in the modern workforce.

So are you accusing Asians of receiving unearned racial favoritism? Even though they have higher education attainment than all groups, they still have higher unemployment rates than whites according to the chart abagond posted.

…so, what about the blacks that attend Ivy Leagues? Do you think we got in there with C’s and no Advanced placement courses? It’s been proven that white legacy students have lower high school G.P.A.’s and SAT scores than so-called “affirmative-action” students?

Show me a study that compares Ivy-league AA students and Ivy-league white legacy students and I’ll be glad to discuss the issue. Of course I would still expect the legacy students to have better salaries because their legacy status implies that they will have elite connections to secure a good-paying job even if they wasted their college years studying unproductive liberal arts nonsense.

Apparently no:
The data from the study represent admissions disadvantage and advantage in terms of SAT points (on the old 1600-point scale):
* Blacks: +250
* Hispanics: +185
* Asians: –50
* Recruited athletes: +200
* Legacies (children of alumni): +160
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legacy_preferences
Regardless I don’t think two (or three including lowering standards for athletes..) wrongs make a right. And to the best of my knowledge legacy admissions are much more prevalent among private colleges. (I am wondering even if any public college still has legacy admissions..)

The other interesting issue, especially for the elite schools, is that a fairly high percentage of the black students are African or Caribbean immigrants:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/05/AR2007030501296.html
Whether or not one agrees with affirmative action, it is easy to understand the original logic behind it, basically it gives a boost to certain groups who were historically disenfranchised (such as Native Americans or native black Americans..) I think that logic is stretched when you apply it to Hispanics in college (many of whom are basically white or whose families came to the US after the civil rights movement..) and to African or Caribbean immigrants.

Well-to-do black Americans also benefit from affirmative action more than the poor. Both middle-class black Americans and West Indians are, in most cases, coming from much better high schools than those in black ghettos.

My point was that however one got in, whether through legacy or racial quotas, you still have to take the same final exams as everyone else. They do not give one test to blacks and another to whites.
Affirmative action affects who gets in, but not who graduates.
And yet if you are black your degree from Princeton or wherever is not worth as much as that of white graduates from the very same school.

Is that true on a degree by degree (and GPA by GPA) comparison..?
I can believe that social contacts play an important role if you have a degree from Princeton and especially if you are connected or can get connected to the money crowd. In that case I would believe the advantage would be to a white person.
But how about a state school. (where many more people graduate than an Ivy league school…)
Do you think a black man with a 3.5 gpa with an Engineering, Math, or Physics degree have less of a chance than a white with the same sort of degree..?
Or say a good state Law or Medical school and a 3.5 GPA..?
FWIW, I know a (white) guy working in a grocery store who has a Master’s degree in anthropology from Berkeley.

Yes, I do think that.
Even if you account for education, it is still harder to find work if you are black and you do not get paid as much as a white man. And, as the post itself points out, you are more likely to get thrown out of work too.
Having a white skin is worth about two years of schooling. So when whites complain about affirmative action or reverse racism, I want to throw up.

I’d like to see an analysis on the types of degrees awarded and school versus performance. (pay rate etc..)
Does it even exist..?
I imagine some schools may have conducted surveys.
complain about affirmative action..
AA or diversity has become much more complicated these days.
I’ll give you an example of diversity in action. The San Francisco for a while had a mission (number one sought after recruits..) to recruit an under represented minority … for the SF fire department: Asian women. Generally a high percentage of Asian women could pass the written but a very high percentage couldn’t pass the physical test.
Personally I would prefer Jesse Washington 6’2″ and weighing 220lbs who had grown up in Hunter’s Point (poor mostly black neighborhood..) over Jessica Chang who grew up in Cupertino (Upper middle class heavily Asian city south of SF..) to haul me out of burning building.
Even though I got a Bachelor’s degree in Biology (useless basically except for getting into Grad or Medical school..) I opted to try my hand at several blue collar jobs.
I took that SF Firefighter test twice scored in the top 2% each time. The cut off was 25%. It was my understanding that for some groups (from several insiders..) they would go down to the 25th percentile. I was never contacted.
Same thing basically happened to me when I tried to become an electrician’s apprentice. The guys (all of them white..) came out and told me.. well.. we have to give you the test but we are actively recruiting for Black or Latino people or (white) women.
I basically decided to go into the computer industry, which at this point in my area is heavily Asian. Diversity in Silicon Valley seems to be two guys from Mumbai, One from Bangalore, and one from Chennai.

Thanks, yeah I gave up after the second test. The whole process was highly politicized. Apparently people of Portuguese descent (gee like Portugal didn’t have anything to do with the slave trade or colonization..?) were granted affirmative action status!?
For a while I was advocating to various women I knew to take the test. Most weren’t interested but a high percentage of the guys who overheard me (even goth types..) were. It’s basically the one job left where you play hero.

Black people are lazy and addicted to drugs or they are so promiscuous that the black women have 12 different babies by 15 different men. I just watched “The Blind Side” and it took a white family to save that black boy. If not for the white people being so nice and generous and not racist that big black boy would have been drinkin’ 40s and smokin’ crack just like his mom. All you black people should be thankful the white man set y’all free and gave you something to be proud of. Now you just need to take advantage of the same opportunities as everyone else in America has. No one is going to give you anything for free you need to earn it or stay a democrate slave to welfare and government programs. The democrates have y’all all under their control and you just willingly give them power. I don’t understand this.

The statistics above do not surprise me in the least. From what I’ve seen, white women have gotten more benefits from affirmative action than any ‘minority’ has. For example, if I had the same track record as ‘Bambi’ Bembenek (just Google her if you’re not sure who she is), do you think that I, as a black woman, would have been able to break into law enforcement? Not hardly…

Whites have suffered long enough. We need to end this unfair treatment of our people along with the theft of our culture. Look at basketball. It was started by a white person. A Canadian white person at that. So he must have been really white. Now the sport is dominated by black men. This so unfair. Now all the blacks think that whites are racist so they discriminate against us and treat us poorly. We can’t go to their clubs or attend their schools unless we are black. If this isn’t wrong I don’t know what is. Whites need to put an end to this unfair treatment. As a matter of fact I think affirmative action should be eliminated and only hire blacks from now on. Whites have had to work and support blacks for long enough. It is time to let the blacks get all the jobs and let the white people mooch from them. I want my 40 acres and a mule too.
