Some Brazilian songs that I like, listed in no particular order. If you see a picture above the title, you can click on it and hear the song on YouTube (subject to link rot: I last refreshed the links in February 2016).
Daniela Mercury – “Nobre vagabundo” – when the world has got me down, I listen to this song and it puts a joy in my heart and a spring in my step. I stop caring about all the little things that eat away at life.
Daniela Mercury – “A primeira vista” – I heard this song on the radio, but here she sings it much better live.
Daniela Mercury – “Santa Helena”
Daniela Mercury – “Topo do Mundo”
Daniela Mercury – “O Canto da Cidade”
Oz Bambaz – “Balaganda”
Jorge Ben Jor, Mariana Baltar – “Zumbi” – this is a beautiful song. Once you know what the words are, it is more beautiful still. She sings it better than Jorge Ben Jor himself, who wrote it.
Jorge Ben Jor, Caetano Veloso – “Charles Anjo 45”
Tom Jobim, Paula Lima – “Só tinha de ser com você”
Marisa Monte – “Bem Que Se Quis”
Skank – “Garota Nacional”
Maria Rita – “Tá Perdoado”
Samantha Schmutz – “Toxic” – yes, the Britney Spears song, but Schmutz does it better even though she is mouthing the words.
Pitty – Deja Vu – I used to play this to death.
Pitty – Umbrella
Vanessa da Mata – Ainda bem
