NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

Who are the most gorgeous white men in the world? This thread is open to nominations till Thursday February 16th 2012 at 12:00 GMT (7:00 am New York time). That will be followed by a poll and then a post on the top ten winners.

You can nominate as many men as you like in the comments below.

He must be famous enough to have an article in the Wikipedia.
He can be alive or dead or well past his prime.

“White” means anyone Americans would regard as white. Doubtful cases will be settled by DNA testing. Kidding. It will be settled by consensus in the comments. I hope.

The 30 men with the most nominations and seconds will make the poll. In case of ties, the one listed earlier in the thread will be favoured.

Pictures: If you provide a link to a picture, put it on its own line. That way people will be able click on it and see.

Johnny Depp has “known non-white ancestry” (Native American) which is quite evident in his features . . . though he does seem to be regarded as “white” by Americans in general.

I should clarify…most of the men on my list had specific periods when they were smoking hot. For example, to me, Redford was gorgeous in Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (whew), The Sting, and The Way We Were. Other times? Meh. Cary Grant seemed to be as handsome later in his life as he was when he was younger.

Slaps forehead! How could I forget about Michael Caine and Ewan McGregor? And if you want to go really old school, Clark Gable. Also, Marlon Brando in the 1950s.

@Parfum Bleu, Depp once did a Vanity Fair interview in the early 1990s claiming he wasn’t “effing white. I think he has changed his mind and considers himself white now.

It’s interesting looking at some of the links provided above. Most of these men could go either way — sometimes appearing handsome, sometimes more like WTF. Maybe it’s their personas, the characters they’ve played on screen (including athletes, who also have performance personas) that are sexy and attractive, rather than the actual men?

It started with a list of mine of the most beautiful women. Then I wanted one of just black women. From there all the other possible combinations of race and sex have been filling in, mostly due to commenter request (“Hey, where’s your list of x? Why do you have y and not x?”)

For women I pick them myself. For men I run a process of nomination, polling and then posting of the top ten. So next week will be the poll and the week after that the top ten.

The threads featuring gorgeous black and East Asian men were over long before I (or you?) even knew blog Abagond existed.

Many of the men I think are ‘gorgeous’ are not white, and neither could they be considered black or East Asian in the US. For example, I don’t think of the young Omar Sharif (Dr Zhivago) as white, or someone like Syrian actor, Ghassan Massoud is ‘white’. I know Abagond has said that Lebanese can be allowed in the white category, but I’m not sure.

Indians certainly aren’t white although many are so-called ‘caucasian’, but, I wouldn’t know which category Naveen Andrews would fit under, for example:

You’re welcome. The younger Vincent Perez is cruelly overlooked. But most of the men outside the American/Canadian/UK/Irish/Australian/NZ axis often are.

There are many other names I didn’t nominate, simply because I didn’t find the visuals (which is essential). There were a few, IMO, who need another year or 2 to ‘grow into’ their looks more.

Then, there were others who don’t have the Wiki article that Abagond stipulates, and this is why I have not nominated more Turks and Kurds, Greeks, and Berbers for instance.

I would have also wished to add more people from the ‘Slavonic’ countries that I recollect from back in the day. However, I can’t remember their names properly (especially ones written in the Cyrillic script).

I’ve seen some outdoor Bollywood filming. It’s amazing how the actors are light skinned and the throngs of spectators all various shades of dark. There are so many TV ads in India for skin lightening concoctions, including those for armpits….
In the sixties there was a skin lightening phase in Africa which didn’t do the health of it’s practitioners any good

Being light-skinned in India is where it’s at. Dark is bad, dusky is poor.
Skin lightening products and treatments is big business over there.

The extreme lengths people (men AND women) will go to to be light-skinned is mind-boggling – and would certainly disturb many in the US, and elsewhere.

But I also wonder about what the Indians think of all the hair harvested from the heads of India women to be sold as weaves and wigs, and purchased by black women in US and elsewhere?

The thing about money is that it has no color. They’d love all the $$$ that harvested hair brings in!!!

Back to the issue of skin color, you may have heard of the slang word “coconuts” – for people who are brown on the outside but white on the inside?
