How to tell if a White American is racist against blacks:
First, the definition. According to the Oxford Dictionary a racist is someone who believes:
each race or ethnic group possesses specific characterisitics, abilities, or qualities that distinguish it as inferior or superior to another such group.
Notice that it is a belief not a feeling. Advanced stages can lead to open hatred, even violence. More common are these symptoms:
- They believe that whites are naturally better than blacks – more intelligent, more moral, more trustworthy, more beautiful, more hard-working and so on. Like if they think whites are Basically Good while blacks are not. You know these people are racist because this is pretty much a restatement of the definition.
- They believe stereotypes about blacks. The bad stereotypes, at least, fit the definition of racism.
- They use the n-word, racist slurs or tell racist jokes – meaning they feel the need to disrespect blacks. Why is that? If they do it against Asians or Latinos, then most likely they are racist against blacks too.
- They play down slavery like it is no big deal. Because to them the suffering of black people is no big deal. Because blacks do not count as, like, Real People. Unlike, say, the Jews whose Holocaust we must never forget (and rightly so). Key expressions:
- Get over it!
- It was the times!
- Africans sold their own people as slaves!
- Arab traders sold slaves too!
- Slavery is universal!
- My family never owned slaves!
- They think racism is no longer a big deal. Only a racist could look at American society and think there is nothing seriously wrong.
- They think blacks are imagining racism, which is racist in and of itself since it assumes that blacks have extremely poor judgement.
- They think blacks are their own worst enemy. Black pathologies, blaming the victim and all that. Which in practice is just another way of saying racism is no big deal.
- They are against reparations, affirmative action, etc – against any serious, concrete policy to undo the damage done and provide equal opportunity. Why is that?
- They think blacks are unreasonably angry, have a chip on their shoulders, complain, whine, etc. After the history blacks have gone through and are still going through, they have every right to be angry!
- They use the tone argument where they say they would listen to you if you said it nicer. This puts white feelings above black feelings. Why?
- They think racism is natural. Which, of course, means it seems natural to them. Why is that?
One or two symptoms might not mean much. Three or more indicate illness.
Some quick-and-dirty tests:
- Ask them about reparations. Less important than whether they agree is how important they think the lives of black people are in comparison to whites.
- Ask them what percentage of white people they think are racist. Subtract that from 100 to get a rough measure of their own racism (a score of 100 means they are completely racist).

Number 5 can often be due to ignorance instead of racism.
But you don’t have to display all these signs to be racist.
Also, not wanting to mix with other races is a common sign.
One thing I’ve noticed among friends of mine that’s kind of an indicator is their taste in black music. Most LOVE rap and HATE R&B; the grimier the rap the more they love it. I’ve suggested some great R&B but they simply can’t be bothered. A friend who plays the piano couldn’t get past one song on D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar album, which I thought he’d love for the instrumentals alone. They can’t quite articulate why when I ask, either. But I suspect the exaggerated stereotypical images of rap music support what they already carry in their heads, while expressions of black love are harder for them to accept. It seems to me they’re more comfortable seeing us as fighters than lovers, though I don’t think my friends would ever admit that. The most I’ve been able to do is turn a few hipster friends on to Bill Withers. I’m a die-hard hip hop fan…but I find it suspicious when my white friends reject a whole genre of great black music because it doesn’t compute.

The above definition is but one example of how white supremacy/racism is refined and maintained. It’s subtle shifts in how racism is practiced/altered, over time, rendering it normative and thus otherwise invisible. It uses language and false definitions to camouflage/hide/obfuscate the fact that racists are (and can ONLY be) those people who belong to that group who wields the power and identifies themselves as white people. Whiteness’ subtleties are often unseen like air, much in the same way water is unseen to fish. It’s invisible, everywhere and inescapable.
Is the writer/owner/publisher of the Oxford Dictionary a white person?
If yes, where do you imagine this white person’s loyalty/self-interest lies? With the TRUTH, or with their membership/identification with the White Club?

I agree with Matari that the dictionary definition is self-serving to whites. However, I think Abagond does a good job in this post of connecting the symptoms of racism to the “racial supremacy” extremist definition most people use. The many ways whites put down blacks or disregard what we say in ways they don’t with other whites is white supremacy.
Excellent post. #2, 5 – 7, and 9 – 11 describe the so-called HR consultant that is retained by the company I work for. I wanted to discuss the facts around why I feel I work in a toxic / hostile environment, and she immediately dismissed me by claiming that I was “playing the race card”. What’s really amusing is that fact that I had said nothing about what my ‘race’ or skin tone is – the negativity projected by some is palpable, and there are any number of my co-workers who can independently confirm some of the hostility directed at me by my so-called administrative ‘team’ members. It isn’t my imagination; anyone can generally tell when another person seems to have an issue with them, but my concerns are ignored, while the outright lies of others are believed and validated.
It’s pathetic.

black people cannot achieve anything, black people are all colorblind, black people are all sane, yes, the USA is a “too white” country, but the relevance of that in an attack on a book printed in the UK, about the words of a languague used in dozens of countries rather escapes me.
As, certainly in the English language, the meanings of race can vary, some crimes which you would classify as intra-racial can beseen as motivated by racism, because those racists or the historians, judges or whatever do not use the same definition of race you do.
In this case, I guess that the author of the dictionary chose the best description of the true meaning of the word in English, rather than in the dialect you seem to be using.

I agree with this. Especially if they live and work around plenty of racialised people, yet never seem to make friends with any of them. They probably won’t say it out loud, but choosing only to have White friends says something. Also, if the person has few friends of colour and treats them completely differently from their White friends.
I know my in-laws hold some racist beliefs and I think it would be suicidal of me ever to mention that to them. I had wanted to say something, but could not guess the reaction. So I did a test with one of the more open-minded family members.
We were watching an American film and, naturally, the evil character had a British accent. This is definitely not the same as portraying certain races as having certain qualities, but it’s an amusing thing I notice and thought it would work as part of my test. So I said jokingly, `Of course: the bad guy always has a British accent.’ (I’m British, in-laws are not.)
The family member in question immediately seemed to get irritated, said it is not always that way and pointed out the other bad guys don’t have British accents, they have American accents, so what I said is not true at all. They conveniently failed to notice that the one with the British accent is the ultimate bad guy and gets more than twice as much screen time as everyone else.
Judging by that reaction, I knew I could not mention how nearly all the good main characters were White even though they were supposed to come from one of the most diverse countries in the world, all the other bad guys were Black and that the two Black characters on the good side were walking stereotypes.
Ask them what percentage of white people they think are racist. Subtract that from 100 to get a rough measure of their own racism (a score of 100 means they are completely racist).
To clarify; if they say 10% of whites are racist, according to this formula it is actually 90%? Most of the clueless ones I have come across do-not even think calling a black person a racist name or telling a racist joke is racist. The person was ‘angry’ or cracks jokes about ‘every group’. To them, and this has been iterated before, the only racists left are the fringe lunatics like the Klan or some other equally extreme group. When you insist to the contrary, a whole litany of reactions occurr from silence to vituperations to the extreme, violence. My personal favourite are the ones who try to flip the script.
This reminded me of an acquaintance (she was a friend of a friend) I dropped from my Facebook. She suggested we go out for drinks. We met up and I don’t think it was the alcohol, but for some reason, she thought she was comfortable enough to make a stupid jokes about people of color particularly using the n-word. I honestly don’t know why my friend was friends with someone like that. She seemed like a nice person at the time.
Anyway, I immediately told her to stop and I didn’t want her to continue using the n-word. She said to me, “Why should I? You’re not even black. Why does it bother you so much? You’re making a big deal out of nothing.” I responded, “I have black relatives through marriage and half-black cousins. Stop being a vile, racist bitch.” I walked away and my friend (now ex-friend) told me the acquaintance thought I was being too sensitive. I don’t need friends like that. I dropped both like a hot potato.

The way some people use the word “racist” nowadays is like it’s interchangeable with words like bigot, prejudice, discriminatory, superior, hateful, biased, preference, reactive, retaliatory and so forth. IT IS NOT. The word has been watered down and diluted to the extent that it hardly has any real meaning at all.
So Teddy – please tell me this: If black people (who are PLACED BY WHITE PEOPLE at the BOTTOM of the RACIAL hierarchy) can be racist, what does that make the white people who created/invented/continue/enjoy the system/hierarchy that benefits them at the expense of everyone else???

So by the test, the only way a white person can not be racist is to say 100% of white people of are racist there by condemning themselves. I wonder if Abagond would be willing to take the same test about antisemitism?

According to my formula, if a white person says 10% of whites are racist, then I give him a racism score of 90 out 100. To think so few whites are racist you have to be pretty racist yourself.
On the other hand, if a white person says that 80% of whites are racist, then I would put him at 20. Someone like that is probably still somewhat racist but it is no longer the air he breathes, no longer a set of unquestioned assumptions.
But please note this is only a ROUGH measure as I said in the post. It is based on my observation that people who are more racist tend to be more blind to it.

Racism is not an either-or thing, like being an axe murderer. There are different degrees of it, like being a bad singer. In the post I look at it like it is a disease – meaning that recovery or at least improvement of one’s condition is possible.

Your incident reminds me of an incident that occurred during a graduate school course I took. I had to do a practicum teaching assignment in a high school class. The teacher’s class in who I was teaching decided to make some comment about Mexican people to me. I’m not Latina, but I was still offended. This man was a teacher who had students of different backgrounds in his class. I guess he saw the look on my face because he tried to backpedal but it was too late. I remember thinking what does he say about Black people to Mexican people. I wish more people of color would realize that if they’re talking crap about one group of people to you they probably say worse about your group when you’re not around.

I don’t believe that the language, or rather the word “racist” was a word that was originally defined as it is used today. But even if it were, it still wouldn’t make a lot of sense.
I’m somewhat encouraged that I’m SEEING an ever growing body of black people and other PoC that’s not accepting/buying into the common/current dictionary definition. We have seen the peculiar shift/change the word “RACIST” has undergone since “racism” has gone from de jure to whatever “many” white people choose to call it now – mainly: whining, complaining, playing the RACE card, making excuses, being over-sensitive, etc…

By reacting as many have done to being called a racist, they are implicitly admitting to being one. It is the same as being called an obscene name(I’ve been called many!). I had a clown make the very argument to me; blacks were fortunate to be brought here as slaves. According to this fool, they were being chased by opposing tribes who were cannibals, afflicted by the local flora and fauna and were lazy and shiftless, as they laid around all day doing squat. I informed him that they were in hinsight smarter than Westerners if you looked at it, as Westerners pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to go somewhere and be lazy and shiftless for a week or so. What does that make them? Dumb I’d say. Needless to say, he did not like this response. Why he felt comfortable telling me these things was beyond me. They seem to like doing that, asking stupid questions and expecting a serious answer.

Wow! Thats amazing. I am a black woman who experiences racism, covert and overt, every single minute of the day and I am with an amazing white man.
Just reading this bit just made me love him more as it shows just how special he is. I kept ticking each point off as something he definitely does not do until it came to the percentage one.
He did say in the early stages of our relationship that 99% of white people are racist. So that proves he’s only 1% racist….

Listen carefully to what they say and what they do. They will say one thing and do the complete opposite, very contradictory behaviour.
Also, just because you are married to someone of a different colour, it does not mean that you are NOT racist. Some people like the person they are with, but not other people of the same race because of their colour.
I often wonder about Abagond’s real motives for writing this blog when I read some articles.
This blog in itself is full of racial profiling, anyway, I continue to observe the circus because that’s what it is.
Dave for example is a police officer working for sky, has been in my house and planted a covert camera or a number of covert cameras…..When he reads this, he can comment on it…..I don’t trust Dave either, NOT a good person.

Actually, there are many accomplished swimmers among black people. Unfortunately, not many black people are involved in swimming at a competitive level.
100 metre running, sometimes black people win, sometimes white people win it…..Running is more about endurance than body characteristics such as a smaller nose and lung capacity.
Obviously, pygmies are short people, Massai are historically tall….What does that have to do with anything.
There are slight variations, but as I said in a previous post, we are first and foremost, HUMAN.
We all come in different shapes, sizes, height, colours and so on, but we are human first and foremost.

I’ve been there, people I know have been there, and I know how much it sucked when I was dealing with that type of mess.
I laugh when I read blogs and opinions that make white racism the target because there is so much racism and it comes from all directions…black racism is rampant against whites, east indians,and orientals too. I see it all the time, I have lived it. There is so much racism going all the way back to the Egyptians enslaving the Hebrews. There was racism among primitive clans and tribes who had different eyes and hair colors. Whites did not start or finish racism and I don’t know if it will ever be done, but the more we stress it by pointing fingers, the more painful it becomes. Eight percent of the population has blue eyes, yet those “empty blue eyes” are a racist target for the majority with brown eyes. Wicked mean children. You just love to hate.
Whenever one points the finger there will always be 3 pointing back at the person doing the pointing. I will not apologize for being white, blue eyed, short, or female. I have lived with prejudice my entire life. I am what I was born and I did not pair up the genes that created me. I will also not apologize because some people kill people, some people abuse people or whatever. I can care but I cannot control what anyone else does or what makes them do it.
Both I and YOU- all of YOU- can only control yourselves and speak for yourselves. It would make more sense to do something for yourself rather than focus on perpetuating racism with pointed comments about white people with blue eyes, blonde hair, and large breasts. It is gross and ridiculous – no less so than people saying all blacks have bubble butts or people who call themselves “niggah” then getting mad at racism. It is obscene. Change starts from within. You can’t change someone from the outside in.
Travel to China or Africa or India , or anywhere in the middle east where anything but white is predominant. Everyone has experienced prejudice so do not kid yourselves. There are many racist people in every culture. Whites did not invent racism. It has existed since time began. The white vs black battle only distracts us from the manipulation used to keep us at each others throats and prevents us from making real changes. I love seeing so many more blacks get into politics because it is already evident that they are just as messed up as white politicians. Well..actually,it is sad to see that there is no difference in the color of greed and manipulation. I had hoped …. Look at what Chinese Communists did to the beautiful culture of China. And yet they had a horrible prejudice against females. It is everywhere in some form or another!
The argument will go on as long as anyone will debate it. I had to look this up for a college class but I am not impressed by all the anti-white Racism masquerading as unanimous Peace and Love by all for all. HA! And I am part of a multi racial family…not bi racial….multi racial. We live three cultures in our family and do not like racism at all but we know it is part of everyday life from EVERY DIRECTION…You can’t please anyone much less everyone so hey…please yourself and stop caring what anyone thinks about your color, culture, or preferences. Work on making YOUR life better. Everyone has opinions but who cares? So what! Do what you can to live YOUR life. Everybody has issues.
Bottom line – The question is, what are each of us doing to change ourselves and how is this racism helping??? It all just sounds like anger to me and anger is incurable with anger as the antidote. I am smart because I read, and I travel when I can to different places so I can experience something different — NOT because I am white. There is one race…the human race. It does not matter what color we are unless we feel a need to make a point of it. We don’t HAVE to LIKE each other…. but it wouldn’t hurt! Be proud of yourself no matter what and don’t wait for anyone to approve of you and that is my take on the entire subject.

I’m going to look for a study that compares black to white racism – I doubt one has been done recently – that would be a little too much reality. Tribalism, of which “racism” is one particular variety, appears to have existed in all times and in all cultures. This is sounds good on paper until you remember that blacks of the older generations had all these traits in abundance, but yet, had little to show for it. Not to mention that if this bootstrapping method really was the case to success, then all working class whites in America today would be in a much better position than they are in now. But despite them having the things you’re inadvertantly attributing to them (by using present day blacks as a contrast, despite your claims) even they aren’t overwhelmingly successful. Now, compared to other groups they are, but that’s a completely different issue. One that isn’t related to simply “being responsible” and “working hard”.

The bigger question is what has stopped them from succeeding all the way up to this day, despite having everything I previously mentioned, and increasingly having it in high numbers all throughout American history? Wow, you too? The person who tried to stuff money in my pants ended up without the $25, got a face full of hot coffee, and the coffee cup bounced off of their forehead! Then they were bounced out of the pub, while I got three comped drinks – one from the bouncer, one from the bartender, and one from the manager!
For the most part, these tests are probably solid ways of getting an estimate of a person’s mindset. Though, as a white man, I resent one of the other comments saying that ‘white people’ don’t care about ‘black people’. That’s nonsense. Sure, a very large majority of whites in the United States are subtly racists, often unbeknownst to themselves – but not all of them are. I count myself as one of them. Politically I rail any citizen or politician who supports or tries to implement policy that either openly or indirectly harms or affects poorer communities that are predominantly African American. I am quite aware of the fact that American history is responsible for the poor conditions of those communities, and it is vitally important that legislation tries to correct that, and give opportunities to amend the wrongs. Not just legislation – white Americans need to use human resource to fix this too. Civil volunteering, social gospel work, education opportunities, – simply going and helping however you can with your bare hands. To say that all white people don’t care about black people is incorrect and it certainly does not help facilitate the understanding that needs to spread among white people and the dailogue that needs to happen as FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS. I live in a very diverse city – Philadelphia. One of the most diverse in the world, not just the country. Unfortunately, there are communities in this city that still have very noticeable remnants of the injustices that were done by whites to blacks. My father spent his life as a teacher for the city in those communities, and taught me how to spot subtle racism in fellow white people – and just how wrong it was. Since I was a child ive see with my own eyes the modern-day effect of so many years of those injustices. I vote to correct them. I work to correct them. I speak to correct them. I volunteer to correct them. I understand how insulting it is for white people to say to adjust your tone, or present the message nicer – after all the years of wrong and injustice who’s effects linger to this day. But at the same token, you have to understand human nature. Many white people aren’t aware they are subtly racist – feel as though since they did not themselves personally own slaves, or ever discriminate against African Americans, that they are not responsible for any of the effects those things had. The result is a stalemate that gets us nowhere. Dialogue ceases – neither group understands the other’s. What we need is individuals on each side who is able to sympathize extraordinarily. Those who understand their own group’s mindset – and the others. It is those individual’s responsibilities to re-open the dialogue. To show and convince those of their same race the things they’re doing that worsen the problem. White people who understand have a MUCH lager responsibility to do this. But that doesn’t mean that African Americans should not try to understand and spread the understanding that – human nature is human nature – speaking on the offense immediately causes the other person to become defense. They close up, the white american then immediately refuses to understand the other but tries to defend themselves. It’s up to all of us. The tradition of Henry David Thoreau was taken up by Dr. King was then taken up by Mahatma Gandhi – it is a tradition of nonviolence and that includes nonviolence in speech. Understanding breeds understanding, kindness breeds kindness. It is up to each individual in all races who get this simple concept to spread understanding among our human family.

I am not American, and never lived there, but there are certain experiences that many PoC in the UK/Europe can count in common with racialized Americans. The following lists situations are not necessarily racist situations at all, and some of them are not objectionable as such.
However, these things can remind a person of the racial landscape around them. They are small reminders, usually popping up without warning and often catch me by surprise:
- When I go shopping and be followed or harassed.
- to be told about “civilization,” and see nothing of my Asian/African origins.
- to be made acutely aware that my feminine shape, bearing, or personal style will be taken as a reflection on my race.
- to worry about racism if I wish, without being seen as self-interested or self-seeking.
- to visit a hairdresser and see the look of dismay as the hairdressers momentarily wonders if my hair will need to be “tackled” in some unusual and challenging way. The remark after they’ve finished is “it’s easier than it looks”.
- to be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race.
- to choose public accommodation without fearing that people of my race cannot get in or will be mistreated.
- to be asked to speak for all of the people of my racial group.
- that, if I ask to talk with the “person in charge” I already know I will not be facing a person of my race.
- If I am stopped at airport security, can I be sure I haven’t been singled out, AGAIN, because of my race?
- can I easily buy posters, postcards, greeting cards, dolls, toys, and children’s magazines featuring people of my race?
- can I choose blemish cover or bandages in “flesh” color and have them more or less match my skin?
– to always be ‘memorable’ for the way I look, or be remembered by people I have not met properly, or do not know.
- to watch, with incomprehension, the culture of The Healthy Tan, whether in the form oils, creams, tablets, sprays and salons devoted to such, etc.

Before I put my opinion in this, let me make you all aware that I am a Caucasian male age 19. My girlfriend of two years is African American, and I do believe she is the purest, most beautiful, smartest, and just overall most amazing person in the world. And I have dated Caucasian girls before.
Now for the opinion:
First of all, I find that when you talk about “white people” you imply that all of us are racist. Do you believe on a personal level that all white people are racist?
Secondly, we are not our ancestors. Slavery was an awful thing, and to be totally honest with you, I teared up when they showed a violent movie in class about what a slave in those times went through. It was heartbreaking. Although my family was not in America in the time of Slavery, I still was disgusted with the fact that I was relate able to those horrible slave owners. But you must also be aware that technically there is no “American” ethnicity. Therefore, most of the Caucasian people came from places like Europe. And I assume that you’ve had a very plentiful education but the facts you use to back up your theories and thoughts. You must also remember that there was a holocaust. Every ethnicity suffered under that event. And although “white people” ran the whole thing, my Caucasian family in Poland suffered. All my ancestors from that time were in concentration camps. My Great-Grandma was the only one to survive, and that was only because several officers favored her, and they raped her repeatedly. And she let them without struggle, because she wanted to survive. When she was liberated in 1945, she was 15 years old. She had my blonde haired- blue eyed Grandmother 4 months later. Later, they met a woman who would take them to America. Let me tell you: I look in the mirror every morning and see those blue eyes. And although I have that reminder, what happened cannot be changed. I hate those who hurt my ancestors, but I do not hate their descendants. So, tell me, if my ancestors had enslaved your ancestors, would you hate me too? Would you hate me simply because I was born in to that family? Even though I didn’t do anything?
What I don’t understand is how you can call “white people” racist (which is a stereotype) yet, you do not consider yourself to be racist against white people? You obviously dislike the white people of the world, but isn’t that racist? Because from what I inferred in your writings, I have concluded that you believe that African Americans/”blacks” are superior to “white people”. And that, is the very definition of racism.
I don’t want to come across as cruel, and I’m sorry if I did. It’s just, I felt like you were insulting ME as an individual, almost like you were accusing me of being racist. I hate that I used the word “race” and “ethnicity” in this comment. Because I believe that to truly say that there is no “racism” in the world is to truly not know what “races” are. We all have hearts, and we are all breathing. We are all equals.
I’d like to know your personal opinion of interracial couples.
Please do NOT answer these questions with facts, I’d just like your opinion.

How could you so easily use the word hate or imagine us doing the same thing. By doing so, you belie your own personal story as you should know by now what is hatred, and at the very least wouldn’t use that word so casually.
Beside that, racism is not that kind of force that conveniently spring out as a logical consequence from some kind of event, like slavery. Racism exists as a rationalizing mechanism, it doesn’t force you but it could soothe you and reassert your normality when you are caught in an aberrant act.
Racism and hatred are two entirely different thing , albeit sometimes complementary.
Per instance, you don’t hang a man and slowly roast him because you are racist, neither do you rape a young girl because of some kind of ideology. Those things, they would have done them anyway, whether these ideologies existed or not.
So, why is it important to tell if a white person is racist ? because racism main and sole purpose has always been to shepherd the thoughts of the beneficiaries of white supremacy, also known as white people, not to be confused with white skinned human beings or caucasians as they like to be dignified with.
As I hinted before, racism doesn’t force one’s behaviour to be aberrant, it’s rather the other way around. That person’s behavior was aberrant to begin with. Racism only enters into the picture because it provides a frame of plausible normality to what would otherwise be considered abnormal.
That’s why the recognition of racist thought patterns are an important telltale of the encroachment magnitude on someone’s thought process.
Rape, theft, slavery, sadistic murders, torture, domination,all those existed way before racism was artificially created. So racism could not be the cause, there are probably darker base instincts at work here.
In a way, you’re right when you say racism doesn’t exist, but you’re wrong if you believe that should racism never had existed, none of those acts would have been happened , although the victims might have been different.

My answer is I believe that there have been increasing poverty rates. The reason why is related to education which in turn is affected by illegitimacy. Single parent homes generally lack the same amount of resources to invest in their children as 2 parent homes.
In addition to official classifications of “poverty” we can see many other similar indications of this phenomena: average wealth of under 35s decreasing 68% in 35 years, stagnant median incomes over the past generation, high levels of unemployment for those without bachelor degrees, and a well-publicized shrinking of the middle class to name a few.
The inexorable advance of globalism will further reward those with high-end technical skills while eroding the earning potential of those without. Liberal arts degrees are worth less and less as increasing number of backoffice-type jobs are being outsourced.
A mediocre student of today can’t expect the same earnings / wealth / pension as his mediocre parents could. Engineers, skilled medical workers, and others with technical educations can still make a great living.

I don’t agree it is a “quandary” as much as it is a commitment. It has been my experience and observation, white people are dedicated to the pleasurable activity of perpetuating racism. I was so sure, at the graduate level, things would be different. I was in (and I’m still in) a “professional” program, 4 years. I was excited about it bc I was well on my way to doing what I want to do in life!
…..I kept encountering this same mess. The program I am in is very diverse roughly 41% black 43% white 12% hispanic 4% Asian.
One of my white classmates told me, I made her feel “inferior” when I was, like most other students, helping my classmates go over some things they were not very clear on. She said she didn’t get it until I explained to her and her group–she could have just left it at that, but she didn’t. Of all the words, she chose to say….”inferior”.
What I just laugh at now, is when someone, who is white ask me what I am doing “school, working etc” and i tell them, it’s almost a look of pure shock—their face turns paler than it was previously, mouth open, eyes wide, like someone knocked the wind out of them—some of them even go into asking me “do you mean, a tech?”…and I contrast this to a random black person I just met asking me the same thing….completely different reaction.
I have a heap of stories that surrounds this issue.
In large, from what I have seen, most white people think black people are stupid and incompetent, just bc they are black, while white incompetency and lack of intelligence goes under the radar just bc they are white.

Yes, whites will be threatened by you and it will get more intense as you venture out into the world with your new career.
I had a choice to go to regular school or take the online program. I took the online program. I’ve had so many bad experiences with white teachers who look at my work with a fine tooth comb, searching for any minute mistake to mark my grade down, that it became almost overwhelming.
White people are afraid of intelligent blacks. This is from the days of slavery when we were not allowed to read, write or even know basic knowledge of survival outside the masters farm. Things in this country have not changed much, it’s just more covert.
Keep your head up. Don’t be offended by the oppressor. Let all those snarky comments push you further. I did. And you will too.

It’s just irritating at times. A black lady, who is very good at what she does, one of the best, I worked for over the summer, some time back told me the same thing. She owns her business and has a high client volume, and mostly white people work under her. Some of them would just blatantly “attempt” to tell her how to do her job. Mind you, she owns this company–almost 25 years. I was so taken back by that, the nerve.
The word “racist” has become in practice “anyone who disagrees with me or doesn’t give me what I want” so racism isn’t going away. Since majority Black areas are hellholes of crime, poverty, hopelessness and illegitimacy that suck down taxpayer money white people won’t live there.

Remember the McCain campaign saga on TV with all those angry whites shouting and carrying on like banshees? We have come a long way in a short amount of time; president Obama has proven that.
That fear is that one day, soon, we will rise up and do to them what they have done to us. That’s why the conspiracy against us continues. That’s why in this economy, our unemployment numbers doubles that of whites, even though we are mostly middle class and more educated than ever before.

The being stages of this “turn around” is what is happening with our foriegn policy. All the terrorism that America (White America) has committed against nations of color is being repaid with interest. The sad part about it is that people of color in this country will suffer from these effects (i.e. Black and Brown people who died on 9/11 and in Iraq and Afghanistan).

First of all it was only the Latin speaking and Germanic speaking languages (which includes England) or countries (western europe) that enslaved black people. Central europe and the Balkans and Eastern europe had no time to bother with slavery of Africans, reason being is because those countries were fighting to keep from being slaves of the Muslims and also most of those countries had their own internal problems and really reasons to go enslave other people. As for Latino people complaining Latins were the biggest slave traders of all yes and i do mean Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, and all the rest of south America, not just the european Latins.
Central europe and the Balkans and Eastern europe had no time to bother with slavery of Africans, reason being is because those countries were fighting to keep from being slaves of the Muslims and also most of those countries had their own internal problems and really reasons to go enslave other people.
So I guess they don’t pick up the attitudes of the home gown whites after immigrating eh? History show this with the Italians and Irish. The Irish were oppressed as well. It didn’t stop them from taking on the ‘white’ racist mentality after a few generations. Poles, Ukrainians and other Eastern Europeans are no different once they get here. In fact, there is an upsurge of racism and anti-Islam in Europe if I am not mistaken, based upon European news sources(I’m not referring to those British rags such as the Daily Mail or the Sunday Mirror). So don’t be quick to give yourself a pat on the back. Oh, and as for being racist? If the shoe fits wear it! One of the most obvious clues is when the white person is the first to bring up racism.

Gerald Massey, looked him up and noticed a generalized wiki that mentioned Eqyptologist who didn’t agree white his “Jesus/Horus” comparison. Interestingly enough they were not Eqyptologist based in Africa but predominately European countries. There is a lot of distortion and mis-interpretation surrounding the Dogon and their accounts of our Cosmological Heritage. Most (I assume not sure) would have to come out of pocket for service that can be sub par because of inadequate supplies to the health facilities and low medical staffs. I can not speak for everyone but personally, I won’t hesitate to choose to come back in another life as black because I cannot imagine my skin being different from how it is, I’m proud of my race and I can’t betray it. I feel the truth of the matter is most white people wouldn’t come back as black. They know deep down black people have been through so much crap, but they sure as hell won’t admit it. When you are in a class with them and anyone points out a characteristic that is positive about POC (i.e. Hispanics have staunch family values, black girls can have a positive experiences in k-12 with bonding with other black girls (not that Mean Girls crap), black men who attend HBCs make higher salaries, some Asian women of particular ethnic groups are great Tiger Moms),they (whites), especially white women, say “everyone is like that. . .i don’t see how that is special”.

I have a problem as per the second quick andd dirty test. I believe that 100 percent of white people are racist, that’s 100 percent subtracted by 100, which leaves my individual self without a racist bone in my body. There is more I expect from a white person, than simply uttering those words, speak up, when you see injustices against a black person or other people of color. Don’t just sit idle, when you see a white person, discriminating against a minority or laugh at a racist joke or don’t say anything if someone says something racist. I see so many instances of white people looking the other way, when they see a black person, getting discriminated against.
Go on YouTube and type ” wwyd black racism” and watch 99.9% of white people, do nothing as a black woman is being racially descriminated against, because of her race in the staged show that the white people think is real and they do nothing to speak up, when they see a racist security guard and racist store clerk, treat her like a criminal for no reason, other than the color of her skin.

I dunno if you read it, but I wrote a comment in the post “White Proverbs” where I ran into a white woman in a chat room who made all kinds of comments you would hear in the broken record department. Basically, she portrayed white people as better than black people like Jared Taylor and the “race realist” gang that would spring up like weeds in blogs like this. Their whole position is that white people are better than black people, and none of them would understand why black people would be offended by such thinking.
Anyway, I was treated lower than dirt. Even though it was just a chat room and not real life, the things I’ve read from her and her like-minded friend was predictable, yet painful nonetheless. I told her how I was offended, and she claims she doesn’t know why. This makes me believe that some whites think they are better than Jesus and can not possibly do anything wrong.

i’ve seen that show called what would you do. i saw that episode where they did a scenario where a group of white kids were spray painting a car and the people were just walking by.There was even one guy who was joking with them and saying its fine just don’t paint my car.Then they did the same thing this time they used black actors spray painting a car and all the people were stopping and calling 911.One person even called 911 on some black boys sleeping in a car that had nothing to do with the ones spray painting the car.Whites won’t see that as racist and the comments on that vid was that its because the blacks were dressed more thuggish than the whites.Then there was an episode where a white woman was stealing a bike and all the people were trying to help her.Then when they did it with a black guy stealing the bike people were calling 911 and trying to confront him,only 1 person tried to help him thinkin it was his bike.Those same people were just saying well i would have acted the same way regardless of race.

This is why i never engage in a conversation about racism, with most white people, they never come with the mindset, wanting to learn from my experiences as a black man. They stay in their, “white mindset” and won’t allow me to, teleport them into my world.
I’ll know within minutes, what type of white person i am dealing with, when they answer a couple, key questions:
Do you think, racism against blacks, still exists today and effects black people’s lives?
Do you think, affirmative action is reverse racism, against whites?
Do you think, America’s Criminal Justice System Discriminates Against Blacks and other Minorities?
The answers of just these three questions, will tell me all i need to know about how a white person, thinks.
I will only talk to certain white folks, that actually want to open a intellectual, dialog about racism in America. They should question me but not challenge me to a “duel” of sorts and its about me telling them about my experience as a black man and not them, telling me about my experiences and how to interpret them.
I won’t be nice about it, i won’t sugar coat anything, i won’t leave them with a feel good, kumbaya speech at the end. I will make sure that they are uncomfortable as i am, when i experience racism.
I DON’T want them to forget, such a conversation, i want it to be burned into their, conscious and unconscious mind.
When you baby white people about the reality of racism in your life as a black person, you’re doing yourself and them a disservice. ( smiling or saying things in a humorous way as to put them at ease ) Whites always want to end, discussions of race one a “happy note”, i say don’t give it to them.
Being nice to white people as a way to change their hearts have been tried over and over again, its proven to not have an effect on how they think of and treat, black people. why should we present discussions of race in a nice way, when they present, acts of racism in disrespectful,rude, and degrading ways?
Racism is a serious matter and we as black people and other people of color, need to be serious, when talking to white people about it, ( this doesn’t mean yelling or cussing or being intimidating ) just being firm and having a conviction about what you’re saying ) otherwise they will walk away with a half-baked, lukewarm version of your experience and say to themselves and you, “things will work themselves out, eventually.”

This woman and her “friend” struck the first blow by talking about how black people feel they are entitled to special treatment. That was a microaggression that started with me, and I felt I had to say something even though I could’ve just logged off. From there, it was like 9-11 in slow motion.

I hear ya, sometimes its difficult to hold back, when whites say the most racist, things.
To white people, treating black people equal, means “special treatment’, so their saying, we shouldn’t be treated equally, to begin with, so when and if we are ever, getting equal treatment, we are getting, “special treatment”. we can never win in America.
Lets take, affirmative action for instance ( which is a joke and isn’t enforced and benefits, white women more than black people and other people of color ) To them, this law that was passed to, “even the playing field” so to speak, is special treatment.
Like i said…i don’t waste my breath, the only time they want to talk about racism with a black person or other person of color is over a blog or chat room, never in person. So i don’t take them seriously.
Holy isht. This is the dumbest post I’ve read in a while. There is a difference in supremecy and racism. Also reparations? That’s your test? My Japanese family received it like it was hush money so I think it’s completely morally unethical to take them. Secondly, being proud of your heritage doesn’t make you a racist. This post is so infuriating. I hate that the Internet has allowed rampant ignorance and hatred. Especially since I found this post looking up information about Rosa Parks.
I will reiterate; When their lips, mouths or cake holes are moving. Even the ones who emphasize with you, slip up now and then under the guise of joking more often than not. A non racist white is an oxymoron! The need to feel like a decent human being supercedes any introspection which, ironically would aid them in being more ‘decent’ and humane. They don’t realize this for the most part. Like an alcoholic or dope fiend, they have to admit to their racism in order to diminish its’ effect. I am not into this ‘New Age’ healing bulls**t, but one must admit to an being an alcoholic/racist in order to become better. They for the most part don’t. They will always remain an alcoholic but they will be in recovery because they have gained some insight into the underlying causes. So it goes for the racist also.

I have had this White wigger in my class think that I am an angry Black woman because I hate the way he acts and because he is so annoying. This guy acts like he knows everything about our Black culture and I feel like this guy is mocking my culture and it deeply upsets me. He acts Black and listen to the current Rap CRap music on the radio. Is he racist or just ignorant? Or both.
Worst of all, I have to sit by him in class.

Not all Whites are racist but in the small town that I live in, most of them are very racist or feel Whites are better than Blacks.
There are some very nice, non racist Whites too.
I feel like my town, NOcala(nickname for Ocala) is backwards with people who think like they are still in the Civil War. I want to move out of that town this summer because it isn’t good for a young, Black woman to be in a town like NOcala. I am turning 18 this year. Seems like a good idea, right? I am originally from New York too and I saw racism in New York too but not on the scale that I have seen in NOcala.

They are so self absorbed and conceited, thinking everything is about them, when you, ( specially a black person ) ignores them, they get upset.
They can’t stand the fact, that you as a black person, don’t need or want their approval.
The wigger, is doing this on purpose, he actually wants your, “Negro seal approval” so he can put the finishing touches on his, wigger routine and come off as a white boy, that not only acts black but has been, accepted into black culture by associating with a black girl in his class.
I won’t put it past him, that he might even have a “negro girl crush” on you and is “curious” what it would be like to, “do it” with a black girl. That may explain why, he’s “acting black”, trying to get your attention.
This is also common among white people, they hate us but when it comes to sex, they want us so damn bad. Sick people….

Well said. I am glad that you realize because I am still young and I am still trying to understand how people interact.
I didn’t know any of this at all.
I just want to do be and become an author/journalist. I want to help the Black community especially young, Black males. Sad to say but I don’t see many Black men in my age group or generation like you.
Many of them are weak minded, don’t want to get an education and self hating and say that they don’t want to date Black girls. This Black guy that I USED TO like rejected me because he said that he doesn’t like Black girls and prefers White girls. Right now he is going out with a Hispanic girl in my English class.
As I look back, I am so glad that I am not going out with a weak minded self hating guy like that guy!
I hope I don’t offend you because I love my Black men but I hate behaviors of coonery and buffoonery from Black men and Black women.

I’m not offended by your statement, you need to understand, that all black people have been conditioned to hate ourselves. I have come to understand this, therefore i don’t take it personal, when black people hate on each other.
Black people, hating themselves and other blacks, is a behavior that can be unlearned by simply, educating yourself or coming across someone that educates you.
I say this, don’t hate those black people, feel sorry for them and if possible, pass on as much you learned to them, so they feel some self worth.
Black people have been in a disposition for so long, we survive the only way we know how, by all means necessary, even if that means the betrayal of a brother or a sister.
This is what white people had in mind, when they sought out to break us as a people and its worked for the most part.
We have to start from humble beginnings, with ourselves and not others that we find to be, broken. Once we unlearn all the self hate in ourselves, then we can begin to attempt to save our brothers and sisters.
@Adeen: In addition to what Sondis said. I can’t stress enough how important an education is. Learn everything about your culture and your people on your own. You can’t depend on the school system to educate you about African American culture and African history. I myself am learning myself. But read as many books as you can about black history. We have to educate ourselves. There is alot of information to digest. But you will be the better for it.

You guys are right. I would love to know where my ancestors came from and the history and my culture.
I have been learning Caribbean history lately because my family is from Jamaica and both of my parents were born in Jamaica. However I was born in New York.I am one of the few American born people in my family that has been ”Americanized”.
The African American history is just as important to me though.

I always say that some white people can not seem to love themselves without putting down nonwhites. It’s a shame really that they are no different than the run-of-the-mill bully.
Many whites can not stand to self-reflect. Many think they are as good as, or better than, Jesus and anyone who disagrees with them is beneath them. It’s racial snobbery at its worst.
As for the black people hating themselves, it’s honestly frustrating to see it happening before your eyes. Yes, there are reasons behind it that point directly to white racism, but sometimes I feel that there is a crisis where some of us wish to be white to escape the discrimination and hatred that comes from having black skin in a white racist world.
Those black people are either programmed or mentally exhausted of having barrier after barrier handed to them. They think that being white is almost like being in heaven. That is sad to have to think and feel that way. Their hatred of themselves and black people is so strong you can see it even when they don’t exhibit any symptoms.
It’s hard as hell to love yourself in a world that tells you that you are no good and worthless at every turn especially in an integrated yet segregated society such as the U.S. People need as much support as possible to break free from this. I personally think it has to start at an early age if you want to good start.

Yes I do believe that most White Americans are racist about 55-60% and I do agree with most of the information on this site. But there are some Whites who aren’t racist though and are good.

In fact, I am concerned for my little brother. All of his friends are White and they said that they don’t see the point of Black history month at all and that Whites need a White history month. Sad enough my little brother agreed with them.We have achieved so much in this country yet get so little credit! I felt so mad and upset because that is a big insult to the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle of Blacks in this country.
My little brother really needs to get in touch with his heritage and culture and realize the fight and struggle our race had to endure in this country and in this world. He needs to realize that he is not lesser than a White boy because of the color of his skin.

Another one: they use the race or perceived-race of a person as part of their NAME or their usual description of the person. Here’s an example of things New Yorkers say on a regular basis and they insist it’s not racist: “He’s my Jewish friend.” Or “the (—insert race here—-) teacher.”

How do you know if a black person is racist? Black people are a bunch of fucking hypocrites acting as if their racism is justified and white racism isn’t. I thought black people fought for equality not to be treated extra special.

Because that’s what black people having been fighting for since the civil rights movement and still haven’t achieved.
Also, just because we as black people, speak out against racism, doesn’t mean we are racist. You and other white people, are quick to call black people racist, simply for speaking out against racism.
