As we found out this past weekend in the New York Times Magazine, there are still whites-only proms in many small towns in the American South. Yes, in 2009, the year a black man became president.
Near the end of the school year most high schools in America hold a formal dance called the prom. It is a big night. But in some towns of the South the white parents hold a separate whites-only prom. No blacks allowed.
Here is what one white student in Mount Vernon, Georgia said about it:

Harley Boone:
There’s always been two separate proms. It don’t seem like a big deal around here, it’s just what we know and what our parents have done for so many years. In our school system it’s not really about being racist or having all white friends or all black friends. We all hang out together, we’re all in the same classes, we all eat lunch together at the same table. It’s not about what colour you are…
It is no big deal, it is not about colour.
Now hear what a black student at the same school says:

Kera Nobles:
My high school has been a great one, except for one night that I only share with people that’s my same race, and that would be prom night. Yes, it is hurtful, because you just think about how, I go to school with you every day, I sit beside you in class… but I can’t go to prom with you one night?
The “white-folks prom” at this school was on Friday night, the “black-folks prom” was on Saturday night. The black prom was open to everyone, but nearly all the whites went to the white prom instead! Either the white students did not understand that a whites-only prom is racist (hard to believe) or they did not care. One of them said, without missing a beat, that some of his best friends are black. What the word “friend” could possibly mean under such circumstances and how it could excuse a racist act is unclear.
Gillian Laub, who is used to taking pictures of Arabs and Jews in a divided Palestine, took the pictures for this piece: the smiles of joy on the white faces and the empty look on the black faces, even on the black prom queen herself, says it all. They did not let Laub in to the white prom. It seems she asked too many questions about racism to be a white in good standing.
The piece did not feature the pictures or words of any black person except for the students.
Note to white people: Small-town and working class whites often come off seeming racist and backward in the press, but that is only because they do not have the money to move away from blacks. I mean, why have a whites-only prom if you live in a place that is less than 1% black, like nearly all suburban whites do?

Thanks to Macon D for bringing this article to my attention through his blog, Stuff White People Do.

Thanks for the nod, Abagond, and for the further points you make in this (great) post. I especially appreciate your note to suburban white people, who are, yes, all too ready to pat themselves on the back, when hearing such stories, for their supposed racial enlightenment.
Great post. And: what Macon D said.
P.S. and O.T. – I like this blog concept a lot: “500 words a day on whatever I want.”
holy freaking crap!!! living in california I forget that crap like this still happens – seriously! my HS prom queen was asian and the queen was black…not that it makes me more enlightened i had nothing to do with who one…just living in a city in california…you forget how bad it still is…i just…why…what the hell…i dont understand why…
make that King was black…of course in cali we would have had to prom queens…
This is terrible… It’s 2009!!
Ms. Laub’s photos are excellent. I do photo assignments on the side as well to accentuate some written works. I gotta say that she did a great job of capturing these ‘seperate’ proms.
This is unrelated to race, but did anyone think that Harley Boone’s dress was a wee bit inappropriate for a high school prom?!
dis happen in the north 2 i live in illinois and in a big city and they still have segraded dances n its sad in dis day of age
Let’s hear it for the new Post-Racial America and the New South! Isn’t it fabulous?
The first time I read about this I was a teenager. I was so shocked then much less now. I wonder how those kids feel about obama?
I’d read the article before and couldn’t believe this nonsense was still happening. The sad this is that everyone is hurt by this, not just the black students, but the white ones too.
Wow just wow. Post-racial they say!
beautyinbaltimore:
What they think about Obama: probably not much:
Montgomery County, Georgia:
In 2000:
69.7% white
27.2% black
3.1% other
The vote in 2008:
70.0% McCain
29.0% Obama
1.0% other
Wow. Way worse than I thought it would be.
Gillian Laub, who is used to taking pictures of Arabs and Jews in a divided Palestine, took the pictures for this piece: the smiles of joy on the white faces and the empty look on the black faces, even on the black prom queen herself, says it all.
I tend to believe Ms. Laub was selective with her published photos. I understand why but I find it a little hard to believe that all of black people were having a bad time and all of the white people were having a good time.
Some of the black girls did smile, particularly at the black prom itself. Of the hundreds of pictures that I imagine Laub took only the most interesting ones would get printed. It is a news story, not an objective, sociological study.
That said, for a girl to have such a look on her face on the day of her prom is striking. And when Kera Nobles said it was hurtful, I doubt very much she was lying and I doubt very much she was alone in feeling that way.
I imagine Laub took only the most interesting ones would get printed. It is a news story, not an objective, sociological study.
Well news stories and sociological studies can both be biased. As I said I understand why she is portraying the black people as angst ridden and the white people but I tend to believe more the statement below by a black student:
“They cracked jokes about the white people’s prom (“I feel bad for them! Their prom is lame!”)”
Regardless it just retarded to have a seperate prom in 2009.

Regardless it just retarded to have a separate prom in 2009.
We are in agreement..
Check out http://detentionslip.org for an AWESOME video trying to end segregated proms!
Sometimes I think you confuse racism with classism and generational poverty (based on your comments about the impoverished — not poor — whites living out in the sticks), otherwise good article.
What Macon D said.
And I was tempted to believe you’re just making this up!
“This is unrelated to race, but did anyone think that Harley Boone’s dress was a wee bit inappropriate for a high school prom?!”
Umm… yes. She looked skanky.
I think in 20 years these kids are going to be embarrassed about this. It’ll be like my parents’ generation talking about segregated bathrooms.
It’s stuff like this that makes me grateful I’m an Army brat.
I think there are a number of schools in the deep south that still do this. I remember a quote from a white parent that supported segregated proms saying “I don’t want no black boys grinding on my daughter” or something to that effect.
When you scratch the surface, I think it amounts to white male paranoia about black male sexuality. As has often been the case.
Another contributor is that blacks and whites that live in segregation tend to like entirely different music. It’s hard to reconcile half your school wanting to hear Taylor Swift and the other half wanting 50 Cent.
I know the article said the black prom was open to anyone, but how could it even be lawful for the white prom at public school to shut out anyone that isn’t white? I figure that it’s got to be more of a de-facto thing.
This is totally about race. They are scared of a mixed Kings and Queens, they dont want black and white dancing together.
I know at my high school(class of 08 baby!) the homecoming and prom king and queen were mixed, a black male and white female both times. Those people deep down south do not want to see their white children dancing(usually provocatively) with blacks at the prom. its really that simple.
@ Y
It is so sad at how segregated a lot of the Southern states still are.
Its very sad. Texas (well major cities and surrounding suburbs) arent that bad. Most folks are chill, the ones that are racist/have a problem can be spotted by there actions/looks so you know to avoid them. It really depends I think. Mississippi, nobody could pay me to go down there. Southern Louisiana, New Orleans in particular, is fantastic! Everyone is very nice, but New Orleans is a chocolate city…
Did you see For One Night? It’s a Life Time movie with Raven Saymone. The proms are privately funded and off of school property -that is how it is legal.
Makes my heart cry
