Maybe a black first lady will help to change, if just a little bit, the ignorant ideas some people have about black women.

For many Americans the president and the first lady stand for the whole country, like it was still in the days of kings and queens. I guess it is just natural. The day they are black in America is the day when white people will never be able to think about black people quite the same way again.

But beware, no doubt some will try to make the Obamas into “exceptions”, like how they think about Oprah and Tiger Woods as exceptions. Like that scene in “Do the Right Thing”.

The black American middle class is largely invisible to white America – it never makes the news and has a different zip code. That means the Obamas will seem more like an exception than they are.
